From Our House to AnotherBY BARBARA WAGNER

Moving to Panorama from Virginia three years ago, an artistic lady felt her second bedroom, otherwise known as the “Guest Room,” needed an update, a change of décor. This meant a new home was needed for her Comfort Sleeper® by American Leather®. Purchased three years ago for $3,000, both the manufacturer and users describe it as simply the most comfortable and versatile sleeper sofa available.

Thanks to suggestions from volunteer friends at the Benevolent Fund, our new resident decided to donate the sleeper to Encore Furniture and Books, the Fund’s furniture and book resale shop. She simply called the Panorama switchboard and the white truck emblazoned with its bright new logo picked it up as arranged on a pick-up day of Monday, Wednesday or Friday morning.

Shortly after Encore received the donation, Jennifer Cahill, an Encore regular with an eye for fine pieces as well as a furniture refinisher and owner

The truth is that Marie Kondo does not work for the Benevolent Fund, but maybe she should. Who is she? Marie Kondo is the critically acclaimed author of The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up which explores and explains the KonMari method of decluttering your home and taking control of your life.

The central question Marie Kondo teaches followers of the KonMari method to ask is “Does it spark joy?” Meaning, does the object bring you joy? If it doesn’t you don’t need it in your life or home. With this simple but revolutionary breakthrough, Marie Kondo became a household name not just in Japan but across the globe. In 2015 Time Magazine named her among the year’s 100 most influential people.

Kondo is not an advocate for throwing away all of your most prized possessions in an attempt at minimalist design. Rather, the KonMari method is designed around “fvringing" your favorite objects to the fire in your home. This method necessitates getting rid of those things that don’t spark joy so you can focus on what does. Do you have furniture or clothing that is too big for your current living space? If you do, it’s most likely not bringing you joy at the moment. Rather, it’s probably just bringing you headaches.

The Marie Kondo techniques for decluttering using the KonMari organization system shouldn’t generate much waste. You can donate many of your items to the Benevolent Fund and they can bring joy to a new owner.

Yes, that’s where we come in. The Benevolent Fund truck can be scheduled through the switchboard to pick up items at your home on Monday Wednesday or Friday morning, or you can drop off small items at the Stiles-Beach Barn on those same mornings.

Remember that item you don’t use that is taking up space in the back of your cupboard or closet could bring joy to someone else. So get going, clean up, clean out and deliver joy to yourself and others. ✦

Can you help? Do you have a few days a year to help the Benevolent Fund?

We are looking for a specific volunteer to work with our Acquisition Team. This group is responsible for the organizing and packing of items that we acquire when homes at Panorama are vacated.

BUT WAIT! We are not asking you to wrap, pack or lift. WE NEED YOU to be one of two volunteers who do the organizing of the team. The tasks entail picking up the house keys from Panorama, making a visit to the vacated home, estimating the number and kinds of boxes needed to do the job, arranging for them to be delivered, and, finally, calling a member of the Acquisition Team who will contact and schedule the packers.

We have a willing trainer who can show you the ropes and get you started. We estimate that you would be volunteering about 12-20 times in a year for a few hours each time you are contacted.

If you are interested or think you might be able to help with this important volunteer job or if you would like to know more details before you commit, please call our office at 7556. We’d love to hear from you✦

A–Team Lead

of Trillium Park Designs in Olympia, dropped by and was thrilled to see the sleeper. She had owned one for 14 years, loved it and was happy to find a newer model featuring updated enhancements. Priced by Encore at $1,000, Cahill didn’t hesitate and wrote out a check. Since she was purchasing for her own use, she willingly paid the required state sales tax. Encore stored the sleeper for one week until Cahill could arrange for pickup and delivery.

New Panorama residents generally are downsizing. As their furniture is placed in a new home on our campus, they may feel, although it fits, that a beloved piece overwhelms the room. Encore is happy to accept donations of gently used furniture. And, before you rush to buy something new, be sure to visit us on Monday, Wednesday or Friday mornings from 9:00 to 11:30 a.m. You just may find a perfect treasure that will “make your day.” ✦
