Dear Friends of the CNM Foundation,

Welcome to this year’s CNM Foundation Annual Report. As the new president of CNM, I am so proud and grateful that the Foundation enjoys broad support in our community and so many warm-hearted souls believe in CNM’s Vision of “Changing Lives, Building Community.”

In my new role, I am very much looking forward to being the best advocate I can be for the CNM Foundation and its generous supporters in the community. In some ways, it’s an easy responsibility to bear. That’s because the Foundation, the Foundation Board members, our Foundation supporters and CNM are all unified in a common cause to help more students in need persevere and graduate. Each time a student graduates, it not only improves the lives of the student and their family, it also strengthens our community and economy.

Like our friend and my mentor, CNM’s immediate past president Kathie Winograd, I will do my best to continue her legacy as a champion for the Foundation, our students, our community and our economy.

I hope you enjoy browsing through this Annual Report that highlights our efforts over the past year. And I look forward to working with the Foundation and its supporters in the year ahead and the campaigns ahead to help increase CNM’s positive impacts on the future of our community and state.

Thanks again for your heart-warming generosity and your appreciation for the crucial role CNM serves for students, our economy and our community.

Sincerely,

Tracy HartzlerCNM President

Dear Members of the CNM Foundation Giving Community,

In my professional role, I am a member of the construction industry where building relationships is crucial to getting the job done.

Building relationships is exactly the role the CNM Foundation performs on a daily basis. Educating a CNM student cannot happen without the relationships between its students, faculty, staff, members of the governing board, the CNM Foundation, business partners and donors like you.

The journey of each CNM student is unique, but one element remains constant… a student’s success is highly dependent on the strength of the community that surrounds them. For over 25 years, the CNM Foundation has strengthened CNM students’ community by providing scholarships, outreach programs, and emergency assistance when our students need it most.

This Annual Report recognizes the members of the CNM Foundation giving community. There are no words to appropriately express my gratitude for your generosity and for the integral role you play in CNM students’ successes.

With gratitude,

Shad JamesCNM Foundation Board President

Johnny’s studies at CNM are motivated by his childhood fascination. As a deaf child, Johnny loved animation but wished he could enjoy it fully. Johnny now studies Digital Media at CNM, and upon graduation he plans to be employed in this field.

His ultimate goal is to help deaf children enjoy animation by including American Sign Language in his cartoons.

Johnny’s studies at CNM are made easier through scholarships. He is a recipient of the Follett Bookstore Student Success Scholarship.

Established by Jack and Donna Rust in 2003, this scholarship helps students meet unforeseen personal difficulties that impose financial problems, such as helping to pay for childcare or vehicle repair to prevent a student from dropping out of school. With this type of non-traditional scholarship assistance, our students are more likely to achieve their educational goals.

I am a single parent to three girls. We live below the poverty line. During my childhood, I assisted my mother with her day-to-day needs because of her medical issues. When she passed away when I was 14, I knew my goal was to become a physical therapy assistant so that I may help others become more mobile. Unfortunately, I lost my baby-sitting job and I needed help in paying bills. Without electricity, I would not have been able to continue with my online courses at CNM. Receiving the Rust Opportunity Scholarship helped me keep on top of my bills and stay in school.

Thank you,Tyler

MILESTONE FUND

MILESTONE FUND

“I was able to complete my degree within 2 years, debt-free with a 4.0 cumulative GPA.” - Ryan

This may sound too good to be true, but this is exactly what a recent CNM Scholar said about his Suncat Scholarship experience.

The Milestone Fund (which funds CNM Suncat Scholars) was created specifically to help first-time, full-time students receive their Associates degree in 2 years.

• $400 scholarship for books and fees/term• An assigned academic coach for entire CNM experience guides students through course selection and provides a strong advocate for each student• Regular seminars teach students to learn how to use library resources, time management and more• $300 incentive/term when students attend all seminars and achieve a 2.5 GPA or better

TOBY & ELISA SIMONTHE JUDITH ADINA SIMON SCHOLARSHIP ENDOWMENT

Toby and Elisa Simon lost their daughter, Judith, at the age of 16-years-old in 1993. Though she died at a very young age, Judith was a natural born leader, volunteering for women’s issues and at Jewish Family Services.

After Judith died, Toby and Elisa knew that they wanted to memorialize her in some way, but they didn’t know how. In 2011, the Simon’s established an endowment in Judith’s name to support CNM students who are victims of domestic violence or homelessness. Toby credits the generosity of his employer, CSL Plasma, for matching their United Way gifts.

Though they still grieve the loss of their daughter, they have found peace knowing the Judith Adina Simon Scholarship Endowment serves women Judith would have helped.

I was on my own by the age of 16. I finished high school but could not go to college. I had to find work instead. I took a few classes at a community college out of state, but when I met my husband at 19, he wanted me to quit school altogether.

I was in a controlling, abusive marriage for 28 years. I finally got a restraining order and pulled my kids and myself out of that horrible situation. We were homeless and living in a travel trailer for 3 months. I am now free and the first thing I decided to do with my freedom was to go back to school. My goal is to serve the social system to help kids that need the help that I once did.

My 15-year-old son began saying that he was not going to go to college. Instead of arguing with him, I began showing him through example how exciting it is to learn. My daughter is now a student at CNM as well. We spend our weekends with text books all over the living room. All three of us are students. I couldn’t be more proud and happy that we all now have the opportunity to learn.

REYES PADILLA CNM DISTINGUISHED ALUMNI

This prestigious award recognizes CNM alumni who have attained distinction in their professional field or life that reflects the mission and values of CNM.

“During my CNM education, I started to realize that after graduating, I would have the tools necessary to build a career for myself, and I wouldn’t have to go into serious debt with student loans.

I am not just an artist, I am a business. The business side does not make me any less of a pure artist. It enables me to dive deeper into my process. Just like any other business, this life is about discipline, care and growth.”
