MILWAUKEE URBAN LEAGUE 2019 ANNUAL REPORT 1

n 1919, the Milwaukee Urban League registered with the State of Wisconsin, making official the work the League was engaging in welcoming and supporting African Americans leaving the

South as part of the Great Migration. They hoped for a better life and Milwaukee Urban League helped make the dream a reality for many families.

Milwaukee Urban League was then, and remains today, a place of hope and support, opportunity and encouragement, and success and achievement.

The first 100 years of Milwaukee Urban League saw doors opened to occupations previously closed to African Americans and other underrepresented communities. Our work for the next 100 years focuses on building economic vibrancy and equity through education and workforce development programs and advocating for efforts that positively impact our community.

The strength of our organization today is in the ties that bind us to those who came before us – board members, executive directors and presidents, staff, volunteers, supporters, and our auxiliary organizations. We stand on the shoulders of giants as we work together to build a stronger Milwaukee for all.

THERE IS SOMETHING about Maleak Taylor and you notice it the first time you meet him. A strong handshake and steady gaze tell you this is a young man who has plans for his future.

Adjusting to life as a freshman at North Division High School wasn’t easy for Maleak. He was distracted and losing his way. But then he found Milwaukee Urban League’s Project Ready program. Project Ready prepares 6th – 12th grade students to make sound academic and social decisions while developing the important skills, attitude and aptitude for successful transitions from middle school to high school and to college or career.

For Maleak, participating in Project Ready has been life changing. “The community

experiences and guest speakers have been eye opening,” Maleak explains. “There is so much to learn and Project Ready has made me aware of programs and efforts that can impact my future. It’s helped me put together a plan for my future.”

Now, Maleak is focusing his attention on academics and his many extracurricular activities, including being captain of the North Division High School drumline and a North Division student ambassador. He’s focused on his goal of becoming a Marine and establishing a career as an entrepreneur.

“Honestly, Project Ready has done so much for me,” Maleak says. “Now, I’m ready to take the skills I’ve learned to do something for myself and my community.”

Creating Opportunities and HopeREBECCA UM is a proud graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. She found a job after graduation but didn’t feel she was using the skills she learned in her business administration and finance classes. Other efforts to find the right job were not successful. Work felt like work. She wasn’t challenged, and she was frustrated.

“My mom told me about the Milwaukee Urban League and how it helps people find jobs,“ Rebecca recalls. “I contacted the Urban League and found out a job fair was coming up. I decided to go and see what happened.”

As Rebecca talked to employers at the job fair, sponsored by MUL’s Employment Services program, one

was especially interested in her. When Rebecca explained she was looking for an administrative job, the employer indicated she had the perfect job for Rebecca. Within a few days, Rebecca was hired by EQ by Equiniti. EQ provides administrative support for shareholders or others who invest in or hold stock in companies. The work is challenging and fulfilling and provides a more stable financial footing than other jobs Rebecca has held.

“I’m learning and asking questions everyday,” says Rebecca. “I feel so fulfilled and more accountable, responsible and organized. It’s a very professional job with a very reputable company. I love going to work and it makes me want to work even harder.”
