OUR STRATEGY FOR GROWTH

Friends of Genesee County, we are pleased to share with you our 2019 Annual Report to the Community as we embark on a year of renewed shovel-ready site development and continued growth in our communities.

On behalf of our board members and staff, we thank you for making 2019 such a success. Our projections for capital investment and job creation were surpassed by large margins because of the work performed across Genesee County’s businesses, municipalities, schools, and utility providers.

Companies have pledged to invest $60 million and to create 200 new jobs in Genesee County across 23 projects tracked this year. This results in a $165 million economic impact, but more importantly, it adds to the vitality of our micropolitan.

Additional 2019 highlights include filling our Gateway Corporate Parks in Batavia and adding even more large-scale construction at Apple Tree Acres in Bergen. Our food and beverage hub has pushed over $500 million and 700 jobs in Batavia. WNY STAMP continues its progress, along with the Le Roy Food and Tech Park, which will add to the current economic impact of over $800 million at our shovel-ready sites.

In 2020, our focus continues on generating growth, talent, and infrastructure across our business-friendly community.

The Genesee County Economic Development Center provides direct support that companies need to succeed in the global economy through the support of Genesee County and our municipalities, and Gov. Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Government. Genesee County is truly open for business, and it’s never been a better time to invest in our community.

Sincerely,

Paul Battaglia, Board Chairman

Steven G. Hyde, President and CEO

CONSISTENT LEADER FOR MICROPOLITAN GROWTH

“Genesee County and Batavia are considered one of the highest performing micropolitans in the U.S. in terms of economic development performance.

While many rural micropolitans are facing population and employment declines, Genesee

County has managed to maintain (and grow) economic opportunities for its residents.”

Site Selection Magazine’s annual research has once again cited the Batavia-Genesee County micropolitan among the top three in the nation, with our county ranked third in 2018 and 2019 and in the top five for six consecutive years.

With an average of 13 qualifying projects selected for consideration annually since 2017, the national profile recognizes the success of Genesee County’s investments, and proclaims the Western New York Science and Technology Advanced Manufacturing Park (STAMP) as, “One of the most ambitious development projects”.

Site Selection Magazine credited Genesee County for delivering the collaborative efforts to take advantage of one of our strongest assets—the highly competitive low-cost hydropower available at STAMP.

SHOVEL-READY SITES

SHOVEL-READY INFRASTRUCTURE ASSETS GROW AT STAMP SOUTH

WNY STAMP is New York’s largest greenfield for high-tech developments, with more than 850 acres on the North Campus. The parks’ site and infrastructure capacities enable NY State’s largest high-tech project pipeline to succeed.

In 2019, progress on design and engineering phases reached significant milestones in the path to final construction. An on-site substation will deliver up to 485 megawatts of low-cost hydropower to companies. Network enhancements will deliver 11 million gallons per day of water to their operations.

More than 6 million square feet of facilities can be added to the low-cost hydropower zone, which offers power to large-scale users at $0.035 per kilowatt.

The GCEDC, our partners in Genesee County, and our partners in the town of Alabama have already delivered the first major phase of utility enhancements to the site, with water service reaching the new STAMP Drive at Route 77. The shared vision and support drives our robust project attraction and development, and incoming investments in 2020 will deliver even more shovel-ready infrastructure.

At over 400 acres, the STAMP South Campus is larger than any of the previous shovel-ready sites developed in Genesee County. With strong electric lines already in place, and incoming projects to enhance water deliver and on-site wastewater treatment, more than 1.2 million square feet of facilities can be supported at the STAMP South Campus in 2020.

The STAMP South Campus is capable of expanding Genesee County and the greater region’s key industries, including food and beverage, while supporting the additional growth of industries at STAMP North.

2020 GCEDC PARTNER OF THE YEAR

Genesee County’s agricultural community has long been the base of our economy. In the past decade, our core community has become an even stronger hub for food and beverage manufacturing at the Genesee Valley Agri-Business Park. Surrounding producers, workers, and supply chains all continue to grow through investments into world-class operations.

This year we recognize a company that has rapidly achieved its own goals and the initial pledges made in 2017 for investment and job creation. HP Hood, LLC has invested more than $200 million into expanding, renovating and operating its world-class 448,000 square foot facility at the Genesee Valley Agri-Business Park. More than 250 workers at HP Hood’s 82-acre campus are part of a growing Batavia operation that continues to invest in talent, innovation and expansion.

The success of HP Hood and our food and beverage hub partners are a shining example of the real growth that occurs when Genesee County’s shovel-ready sites, regional resources, and our talented workforce are combined with the strong commitment of our business community.

HP HOOD, LLCSHOVEL-READY SITES GENERATE GROWTH

Upstate NiagaraThe Genesee Valley Agri-Business Park in Batavia received another round of investment in 2019, with the Upstate Niagara Cooperative purchasing a 42,000 square foot facility and surrounding acreage for future expansions. The Ag-Park offers immediate availability for additional projects, including a 30-acre site with direct rail access and a retail parcel at the Route 5 entrance.

Gallina Gateway GSThe Gateway I and II Corporate Parks are fully sold out of acreage, however business opportunities at Interstate 90’s Exit 48 are expanding with the Gateway GS campus. Gallina Development’s first of five planned flex buildings welcomed tenants in 2019, and offers immediate lease opportunities for flex office, manufacturing, and distribution projects needing 4,500 to 27,000 square feet.

Apple Tree AcresThe continued growth of Liberty Pumps at the entrance to Apple Tree Acres has centered a growing cluster of companies finding success along Interstate 490 in Bergen. In 2019, construction moved forward as J-Rental and Coach Tony’s added over 60,000 square feet of new facilities at the park, which offers 17- and 40-acre sites for immediate development.

“(Shovel-ready) sites allow for a community to coordinate and plan for expansion … the result is positioning of business in locations that make the most sense for the community as a whole. These sites are also an important signal that a region is invested in attracting new

business and will be an active and supportive partner.”

“The diversity in educational attainment levels within Genesee County makes it an ideal location for employers looking

for employees in all skill levels.”

– SUNY Rockefeller Institute of Government

When the first of several dozen buses filled with students began arriving on the morning of GLOW With Your Hands, I knew it was the start of a life changing experience for a generation that will power the growth of our region.

More than 800 students from Genesee County and surrounding counties were fortunate to test out over 50 careers selected from the advanced manufacturing, agribusiness, clean energy and skilled trades that are in high demand for their talent and passion.

As a region, we are able to pull from New York’s second-and-third largest metros. Buffalo and Rochester are university and research & development hubs, and we generate skilled workers

from Genesee Community College and our Genesee Valley Educational Partnership. Attracting the talent from our backyard is a micropolitan’s best source for workforce and hiring solutions – and we’re doing it in Genesee County!

At GLOW With Your Hands, the connections between employers and students that are entering the workforce this summer and in coming years were created. Activities like a welding simulator at Graham Corporation’s booth instantly hooked kids that could easily have missed out on a successful career in manufacturing. Career decisions moved closer to reality in every conversation at the booths of Lapp Insulators, Liberty Pumps and O-AT-KA Milk Products among many others.

With our partners in Genesee County we are enabling our talent base to discover, learn and land the great jobs that our employers are adding across Genesee County.
