From the perspective of gender equality how does theenvironment which you work in now compare to the one youbegan your career in?Times have changed and now for sure it is easier being a woman in theM&A practice, and easier to achieve the position of partner. But atMachado Meyer it was never that difficult as the founding partnerstrusted in women as much as men and, wherever possible, gaveopportunities for both lawyers of both gender to become partner.

In general, do you feel the legal profession in Brazil treats womenand men equally? Unfortunately, not yet. In Brazil, particularly in the lower social classesand in less skilled jobs, men’s earnings are materially higher thanwomen.

Are there any initiatives to promote gender equality in the legalprofession in Brazil?Yes, both in law firms and legal entities there has been a movementtoward greater gender equality and to increase the number of womenin senior positions – partners in law firms, general counsel, CFOs andCEOs in companies, and at board level.

Do you feel women are well represented at partner level and inmanagement positions in firms in Brazil? There has been significant growth in the number of women at partnerlevel and in management positions at the biggest law firms, mainly inSão Paulo, however there are still some difficulties with unconsciousbias that may limit the retention of female talent or restrict thedevelopment of women’s careers at firms. Women still carry theresponsibility for the major part of childcare and are underestimatedin their courage and strength.

What initiatives do you have in place atyour firm to promote gender equality?Machado Meyer has many programmes topromote gender equality, for example Womenin Machado Meyer. This programme wascreated in 2011 with the purpose to offer amore gender balanced working environmentfor women, enabling a fair career progressionfor female lawyers. Our other initiatives for female lawyersinclude a mentoring programme to motivateand engage our top-talent. It facilitates sharingknowledge, expertise, skills, insights, andexperiences through dialogue andcollaborative learning. Because our mentoringprogram is goal-oriented and promotesprofessional and personal growth amongparticipants, it helps us attract, motivate, develop, and retain profitable talent whileincreasing productivity. 48% of female seniorassociates already participated in thementoring program, 23% were promoted toa higher level and 55% were retained. In2015, for the first time, the program openedpositions to men mentors. In 2018, ourmentoring program expanded beyond femalelawyers to part of our administrative team. Fora first phase we considered femalecoordinators and managers, but the plan is toexpand to other positions in 2019.We also offer flexible working hours. Allparents (including men) are eligible for thenew flexible hours scheme until their child isone year old, including parents of adoptedchildren. The extension to fathers puts ourinitiative in line with the HeForShe campaigncreated by the United Nations about genderequality that strongly encourages men to getinvolved in their families’ responsibilities.Another relevant accomplishment – in 2015– was the creation of a lactation room. This isa quiet, private and comfortable, equippedspace to enable mothers to breastfeed theirbabies or to pump expressed milk for later use.We are not just focussed on creating gender

equality within the firm. We have aDiversity Committee which is currentlyfocussed on two initiatives. One of theschemes is called #Equality (#1gualdade).Launched in 2017, the initiative representsour commitment to supporting diversityand promoting an open, inclusive andwelcoming environment for LGBTemployees. We also created a guidebookwith clarifications on the correct LGBTterms that we should use in our speech. Thematerial is distributed to all employees at thetime of admission. Within this programmewe have created an internal forum to sharecontent and to discuss LGBT themes atregular face-to-face meetings and events. The second initiative is: Afro Identity(ID.AFRO). Launched in 2018, it representsthe office’s commitment to ethnic / racialequality by promoting an open andwelcoming environment, discussing andreflecting on ways to overcome racism, andcreating actions to promote racial equality. Wealso have an internal booklet withclarifications on terms, especially of the widelyused expressions that are considered racist andthat should not be used.

Do you think your firm compares well toothers in your market when consideringgender equality? Our company is very well positioned whencompared to others in our market. MachadoMeyer is committed and does its best toshare and reinforce the theme of equality.Because of such commitment, we have beenrecognised many times as best firm at theIFLR Americas Women in Business LawAwards. Our recent awards include: BestNational Firm for Women in Business Law(2013, 2015), The Best Gender DiversityFirm in Brazil (2013), Best firm for diversityin Brazil (2014, 2016), Best gender diversityinitiative by national firm in Latin America(2014, 2018), Best gender diversity

initiative by national firm (2015, 2016), andBest national firm for talent management(2015, 2016).

If you could introduce one policy relatedto gender equality in the legal professionwhat would it be?Besides the ones we already have in our firm,I would introduce more policies related tonetwork and cross-selling with moreparticipation from women and marketingactions that praise all team members, but thatvalue women who participate in relevant work.

What do you feel are the biggest obstaclesfor women in your country joining thelegal profession now?Even with all evolution we have had, theobstacles are still the same: balance family andwork, and to be recognised as at least equal tomen and – for some work – better suited to itthan them.

What advice would you give to women injunior positions seeking promotion?I would say that they do not need to beaggressive to be assertive; they do not have tospend energy in copying the characteristics ofmen. They have to find their own way to feelsecure and to be brave. They have to trust intheir differences. Being different from menmakes women essential to a firm or whateverorganisation they work for. The partnershipformed between women’s capacity andsensitivity and men’s practicality andobjectivity brings a more complete analysis ofsituations and the ability to take betterdecisions, or at least to have a broader view.

What do you consider to be the greatestachievements of your career?I believe it is to become a partner of one ofthe top five firms in Brazil and to be in aposition to teach, mentor and coach younglawyers.

From the perspective of gender equality how does theenvironment which you work in now compare to the one youbegan your career in? My work environment has had few changes since my first career begansome 25 years ago. Although women did not have many decision-making positions then, I can only mention a handful of times when myemployer and peers presented gender concerns or expected malecounterparties to take on high profile roles. In a country where the firstLatin American woman was elected president, I am fortunate to say Ihave not felt inequity in my work environment or community in general.

In general, do you feel the legal profession in Nicaragua treatswomen and men equally? Yes, I do. Approximately half of authorised attorneys in Nicaragua arefemale, with many women having been appointed to the judiciary andthe chief justice position is currently occupied by a woman.Nonetheless, there are still opportunities to be had in private practice, where in-house counsel positions are generally occupied by men.

Are there any initiatives to promote gender equality in the legalprofession in Nicaragua? Some initiatives have taken place in the last few years, particularlyefforts to create a local chapter of The Vance Center´s ‘Women in theProfession’ programme, with the purpose of promoting, increasing andextending women´s representation and leadership in the legalprofession throughout Nicaragua. I participated as a founding memberwith female peers from other law firms in the organisation of thisentity, which unfortunately did not go through the requiredauthorisation process. Similar work has not been recently undertaken.

Do you feel women are well represented at partner level and inmanagement positions in firms in Nicaragua? Yes, I do. In Arias´ case, 48% of our regional partners are women (50%in the case of our Nicaragua office), 55% of our associates are women

and 65% of our management team arewomen. Local law firms, generally, also havea strong female presence.

What initiatives do you have in place atyour firm to promote gender equality? Though we do not have specific programs,Arias is agender blind employer, whichpromotes and has consistently demonstratedgender equality at all levels.

Do you think your firm compares well toothers in your market when consideringgender equality? Yes, I do. Arias has a strong female presenceat all levels as I already outlined.

If you could introduce one policy relatedto gender equality in the legal professionwhat would it be? I would propose policies for retaining andadvancing women in the profession, includingflexible and remote working, job sharing, andproviding opportunities for personal andprofessional growth.

What do you feel are the biggest obstaclesfor women in Nicaragua joining the legalprofession now? The biggest obstacle from my experience isbalancing your personal and work life. Weneed to replicate successful practices fromother countries that allow women to reachtheir full potential without having to sacrificepersonal goals.

What advice would you give to femalelawyers in junior positions seekingpromotion? Success is based on hard work, determinationand consistency, not merely on intelligence.Likewise, while encouraging youngprofessionals to accede to senior and partnerpositions, personal and family goals must beconsidered, as greater responsibility andrecognition requires – at least when firstassuming those positions – considerablesacrifices.

What do you consider to be the greatestachievement of your career?Transitioning from the public sector into privatepractice was particularly challenging, having tochange my mindset and work culture.
