Tax Information Required for Verification

Follow These Steps to Utilize the IRS Data Retrieval Tool (DRT) to Transfer IRS Tax Data into the FAFSA 1. Log in to your current FAFSA form at fafsa.gov. 2. In the finances section of the online form, you will see a “Link to IRS” button if you are eligible to use the IRS DRT. 3. Click the “Link to IRS” button and log in with your FSA ID to be transferred to the IRS to retrieve your info. 4. Once at the IRS site, enter your information exactly as it appears on your federal income tax return and click the “Submit” button. 5. Check the “Transfer My Tax Information into the FAFSA form” box, and click the “Transfer Now” button. 6. You will know that your federal tax return information has been successfully transferred because the words “Transferred from the IRS” will

display in place of the IRS information in your FAFSA form. For your protection, your tax information will not be displayed on either the IRS site or fafsa.gov.

7. Once updates are complete, click the “Sign & Submit” section to sign and submit your corrected FAFSA.If you have any issues, contact the Federal Student Aid Information Center at 1-800-433-3243.

Can’t Utilize IRS DRT through FAFSA?If you are unable to successfully utilize the IRS DRT through the initial FAFSA filing or through the FAFSA Web Correction process, you MUST submit a SIGNED copy of your 2017 federal income taxes, including all schedules, or an IRS Tax Return Transcript. This option will slow down the verification process.For detailed information on obtaining the following documents from the IRS: • Tax Return Transcripts • Verification of Nonfiling • Wage and Income TranscriptsPlease refer to: jccc.edu/admissions/financial-aid/obtain-tax.html.

Individuals Who Filed an Amended IRS Income Tax ReturnAn individual who filed an amended IRS income tax return for tax year 2017 must provide:

A signed copy of the 2017 IRS Form 1040X, “Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return,” that was filed with the IRS or documentation from the IRS that include the change(s) made by the IRS (you may be required to have this document stamped by the IRS); AND one of the following: • IRS DRT information on FAFSA record with all tax information from the original tax return; OR • A signed copy of the 2017 federal taxes that were filed with the IRS; OR • A 2017 IRS Tax Return Transcript (that will only include information from the original tax return and does not have to be signed), or any other

IRS tax transcript(s) that includes all of the income and tax information required to be verified.

Individuals Granted a Filing Extension by the IRSAn individual who is required to file a 2017 IRS income tax return and has been granted a filing extension by the IRS beyond the automatic six-month extension for tax year 2017, must provide: • A copy of IRS Form 4868, ‘‘Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return,’’ that was filed with the IRS

for tax year 2017. • A copy of the IRS’s approval of an extension beyond the automatic six-month extension for tax year 2017. • Verification of Nonfiling Letter (confirmation that the tax return has not yet been filed) from the IRS or other relevant tax authority dated on or

after October 1, 2018. • A copy of IRS Form W–2 for each source of employment income received or an equivalent document for tax year 2017 and, • If self-employed, a signed statement certifying the amount of the individual’s Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) and the U.S. income tax paid for tax

year 2017. • When your taxes are filed, you must then provide copies of your original IRS Tax Return Transcript.

Individuals Who Were Victims of IRS Identify TheftAn individual who was the victim of IRS tax-related identity theft must provide: • A Tax Return DataBase View (TRDBV) transcript obtained from the IRS, or any other IRS tax transcript(s) that includes all of the income and tax

information required to be verified; and • A statement signed and dated by the tax filer indicating that he or she was a victim of IRS tax-related identity theft and that the IRS is aware of

the tax-related identity theft.Contact the IRS at 1-800-908-4490 for specialized assistance with IRS tax-related identity theft.
