Service Learning is a teaching and learning strategy that integrates meaningful communityservice with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience, teach civicresponsibility, and strengthen communities. Faculty choose a limited number of meaningfulpartnerships with the goal of providing students with different, but consistent off-campuslearning experiences. Through service learning, students-from kindergartners to collegestudents-usewhattheylearnintheclassroomtosolvereal-lifeproblems.Theynotonlylearnthepracticalapplicationsoftheirstudies,theybecomeactivelycontributingcitizensandcommunitymembersthroughtheservicetheyperform.

IntroductiontoServiceLearningWhatisServiceLearning?

Therearemanydefinitionsofservicelearningintheliterature,eachonewithcommonelementsthat define how service is conducted in conjunction with course content. Coursecontent/concepts, service learningprojects, and student reflection. TheOfficeof CommunityEngagementatCaliforniaStateUniversity,Northridgeadoptedthebelowdefinitionin2012.Service Learning is a teaching and learning strategy that integrates meaningful communityservice with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience, teach civicresponsibility, and strengthen communities. WHATISTHEGOALOFTHESTUDENTSCHOLARSPROGRAM?Scholars in the SL Student Scholars Program contribute to CSUN’s mission to cultivate civicresponsibility amongst students by assisting service-learning professors and leading service-learningstudents.Whileeachstudentscholarexperienceisdifferent,thegoaloftheprogramisto ensure that Student Scholars are able to enhance their professional development andleadership potentialwhile gaining community-based research and project coordination skills.StudentScholarsareselectedbyfacultyandOCEdirectorsandstaff.

WHOARESTUDENTSCHOLARS?StudentScholarsareselectedbyprofessorstoserveasthestudentleadersofaservice-learningclassandreceiveascholarshipgrantfortheirleadershipduties.StudentScholarsarechosenbytheirprofessorsforshowingleadershippotential,aninterestincivicengagement,andstrongresearchandorganizationalskills.

• MakesureyouareREGISTEREDasastudentinatleast1creditduringthesemesteryouwillbeworkingasaStudentScholar.

• Email the Director of Student Service Learning ([email protected]) the followinginformation:yourCSUNemail,studentID,semesterandclasstitle,yourprofessor’snameandemail.Wewill need this information toprovide your access to S4Database yourfacultyandstudentswillbeusingextensively.

• LogintoS4databaseusingyourCSUNemailandpasswordathttps://app.calstates4.com/csun

• Asastudentscholaryoumaybeassignedadifferentlogininformationlatertogiveyouadministrativeaccesstotheclass,butinorderforustoseeyouinthesystem,youneedtoenterS4atleastoncewithyourregularCSUNcredentials.

PossibleAdditionalOrganizationalRequirementsBackgroundChecks(NotRequiredbyAllOrganizations)Background checks (whichmay include fingerprinting) areoften required for service learningstudentswhocomeintocontactwithprotectedclassesofpeople,suchaschildren,personswithdisabilities,andpersonslivinginassistedlivingfacilities.Thedecisionofalearningsitetorequireabackgroundcheckdependsonthelearningsite’sinterpretationofthelawsorregulationsthatgovernit.Assuch,thedecisiontorequestabackgroundchecksfromservicelearningstudentsfallundertheorganization’sresponsibilities.Theuniversityplaysnoroleinthisdecision.Federalandstatelawsandregulationsgoverningbackgroundchecksareverystrictregardingtheprivacyofthepersonbeingreviewed.Mostlawsallowonlytheentityrequestingthebackgroundchecktohaveaccesstotheresults.Consequently,becausetheuniversityisnotresponsibleforrequesting thebackgroundcheck,no facultyor staffmemberwilleverbegiven thespecificresultsofastudent’sbackgroundcheck.All learningsitesareunderstrictguidelinestokeepbackgroundcheck informationprivateandcanhavetheir licenses revoked if theyviolate thisrightofprivacy.Thismeansthatifastudenttakestwoseparateservicelearningcourses,eachrequiringabackgroundcheck,theywillneedtosubmittotwobackgroundcheckssothattheresults canbesent separately toboth locations.Thisholds trueeven ifboth service learningcoursesaretakeninthesamesemester.Although it is the sole responsibilityof the learning site todeterminewhether abackgroundcheckisnecessary,thatdoesnotmeanthatthelearningsiteisalwaysresponsibleforpayingforthe process. If the learning site cannot cover the cost of the background check, then thisresponsibilityfallstothestudent,nottheuniversity.

• TheStudentServiceLearningPlan isamandatoryagreementthatservesasacontractbetweentheuniversityandtheservice learningstudent. It isadocumentof informedconsent that demonstrates student’s awareness of the potential risks and behaviorexpectationsatthelearningsite.

• Studentsmustsubmitaseparateagreementforeachleaningsitetheyplantoworkwith.

• StudentswhoparticipateinaservicelearningassignmentwithoutsubmittingaStudentServiceLearningPlan&AgreementarenotcoveredundertheSAFECLIPcampusinsuranceprogramandcanbeheldliableforanydamagesincurredatthelearningsite.

• Minorsmustalsofilloutahardcopyofthisform,whichcanbeobtainedfromtheOfficeofCommunityEngagement.Thisphysicalcopymustbefilledoutandsignedbyboththestudentandtheirparent/guardian.

1. Youneedtohavealreadycreatedaplacement,soifyouhaven’tyoumustdothatfirst.LogontoyourS4dashboard.A“PendingTasks”notificationshouldappearonyourhomescreenaskingyoutoupdateyourTimelog.Clickonthelink.

2. Click“addtimeentry”3. Editthetimeentriesaccordingly.Thehoursfieldwillbeautomaticallyfilledbasedoffof

thedate/time.4. Completetherequiredfields(HoursandWhatdidyoudo?)5. Choosetheactionyouwanttocomplete.YoucanSaveEntryforlaterifyouarenotyet

readytosubmit,Saveandaddananotherentry,Saveandsubmit,orReturnwithoutsavinganything.

6. Onceyouchooseanaction,youwillberedirectedtothehomescreen.

Requesting Approval 1. Onceyouhavesubmittedhours,youcansendarequesttohavethemapprovedbyyour

instructororsitesupervisor.Fromthetimeloghomescreen,clickontheRequestApprovalofHoursbutton.

2. Entertherequiredinformation.Thenameandemailfieldwillbeautofilledbasedonwhoyouselectedasyoursitesupervisorduringplacement.Youcanenterdifferentinformationifneeded.Youcanaddanadditionalmessagetobeincludedintheemailnotification.Reviewtheinformation,thenclick“sendemail”whenyouarereadytosubmit.

Pre-ServiceLearningEvaluation&Post-ServiceLearningEvaluationThe Pre-Service Learning Evaluations and Post-Service Learning Evaluations are designed tomeasurestudents'inclinationandparticipationinservicelearningclassesandthelikelinessofstudentstoparticipateasactivemembersintheircommunity.Theseevaluationsalsoimproveand enhance the service learning experience for future CSUN students. Both evaluations arerequiredatthediscretionoftheprofessor.Pre-Surveysareavailableacrossthefirst8weeksofthesemester.Post-Surveysareavailableacrossthelast8weeksofthesemester.

• Theseevaluationsaremeanttomeasureexperiencesbeforeandaftervolunteering.

• Studentsmay be given an evaluation form by their professor or the communityorganization.

• CompletedevaluationsshouldbeturnedinusingtheServiceLearningDatabase.

• PleasenotestudentsmustlogintothedatabaseusingtheirCSUNcredentialsbeforeviewingorsubmittingtheseforms.

TipsforaSuccessfulServiceLearningExperience

• Trytoattendthesite,atleastforthefirstfewtimes,withaclasspartner;usethebuddysystemwhenpossible.

• Keepyourautomobileanon-attraction.Donot leaveitemsvisible inthecar's interior.Placevaluablearticlesinthetrunkpriortoarrivalatthelearningsite.

• Ifyoutakethebus,besuretoknowtherouteandcostofbusfare.

• In case of a breakdown or amix upwith transportation, carry enoughmoney for analternateridehome.

• Developacommunitysafetynetofresourcesinyourlearningsitearea.

• Gettoknowyourlearningsitesupervisoratthelearningsite.

• Familiarizeyourselfwithpeople,placesandthingsintheareathatcanbeofassistanceintimesof emergency (e.g. know the locationof phones, 24-hour stores, police station,etc.).

• Givethephonenumberoftheagencywhereyou'llbeservingtoaroommate,friend,orrelativebeforeleavingforyourlearningsite.

• Usecommonsenseandconductyourselfinaprofessionalmanneratalltimes.

• Everylearningsitehasitsownrules,policies,procedures,protocolandexpectationsforwhichyouareresponsible.Familiarizeyourselfwiththeworkingsofthelearningsite.Thiswillcontributetobothyoursuccessandyoursafety.

• Reporttoyourlearningsiteundertheinfluenceofdrugsoralcohol.• Giveorloanaclientmoneyorotherpersonalbelongings.• Makepromisesorcommitmentstoaclientthatyoucannotkeep.• Giveaclientorcommunityorganizationrepresentativearideinapersonalvehicle.• Useyourpersonalvehicletoprovideservicesforyourorganization.• Tolerateverbalexchangeofasexualnatureorengageinbehaviorthatmightbeperceived

assexualwithaclientorcommunityorganizationrepresentative.• Tolerateverbalexchangeorengageinbehaviorthatmightbeperceivedasdiscriminating

againstanindividualonthebasisofher/hisage,race,gender,sexualorientation,abilityorethnicity.

• Engage in any type of business with clients during the term of your service learningassignment.

CreatingClosureattheLearningSiteHow can you best prepare yourself and individuals you have been working with for yourdeparture? Through Community Engagement, students experience the frustrations anddifficultiesaswellasthesuccessesandhopesofworkingwithdifferentpopulationsonashort-term(semester-long)basis.Closuresignifiestheendingofanexperienceandwillinvolveaperiodoftimemeanttoeffectivelyprepareparticipantsfortheconclusionofacommunityengagementpartnership.

• GiveanAdvancedNoticeofTwotoThreeWeeksBeforeyourServiceEndsIn anticipation of final visits to the learning site, you should inform the learning sitesupervisorand thosewithwhomyouhaveworked, thenumberofweeks leftof yourcommitment.Thisway,thelearningsitesupervisorwillbealertedtothelossofassistanceandthepersonsbeingservedwillhavetheopportunitytoemotionallyprepareforandexpress"Goodbyes."

• Plana“Ceremony”foryourFinalSessionPlanagatheringwithdrinksandsnacks.Thismaybeatimeforacknowledgment,sharingaccomplishments,providingcertificatesandawards,takingandsharingphotographsorcreatingabulletinboard,photoalbum,oranothermementotoreflectontheexperience.

• WriteLettersWrite a letter to the learning site and/or the person you served sharing how theexperiencechangedyou,whatyoulearned,andthelastingimpacttheservicehashadonyou. If you would like to continue communication after the semester, invite theindividual(s)youworkedwithtowriteback.

• GiveSmallGiftsasRemembrancesMakeaDVDofmusicpartylike,takeacameratothelastservicelearningvisitandtakepicturesofeachothertoexchange,giveabook(onethatyouhavereadtogetheroronethatyouthinkthepersonmightenjoy).Pleasedon’tspendlargeamountsofmoneyongifts.

• BehaviorstoAvoidWhenSaying"Goodbye"Emotionsmaysurfaceforyouandthepeopleyouhavebeenworkingwith.Itislikelythatthe people with whom you have worked have experienced losses and it is never anenjoyablepartofapartnership.However,leavingapartnershipwithoutsayinggoodbyewillleavebothyouandtheotherpersonfeelingunsettledandabandoned.Beawarethatyoumaybecome"romanticized"andmaybeinspiredtomakepromisestoperpetuatethatfeelingofgoodwill.However,youmustBEHONESTaboutendingtheexperience.Yourtimecommitmentisfinished,anditisappropriateforyoutosaygoodbye.Donotmakepromisesthatcannotbekept.

CSUSexualHarassmentPoliciesTheCaliforniaStateUniversityChancellor'sExecutiveOrderNo.345requireseachcampusofTheCalifornia StateUniversity tomaintain aworking and learning environment free from sexualharassmentforitsstudents,employees,andthosewhoapplyforstudentoremployeestatus.The following federal and state statutes prohibit sexual harassment as a form of sexdiscrimination:TitleVIIoftheCivilRightsActof1964(asamended)–TitleIXoftheEducationAmendmentsActof1972;GovernmentCodeSection12940;andtheCaliforniaEducationCode,Section200etseq.Responsibility–Allmembersoftheuniversitycommunityareresponsibleforensuringthattheirconductdoesnot sexuallyharass anyothermemberof theuniversity community. This sameresponsibilityextendstoemployeesofthirdpartiesdoingbusinesswiththeUniversityandtocampus visitors. • Verbalorphysicalcontactwiththeintentionofsexualrelationsmaybequidproquo(i.e.,"inexchange"forfavorssuchaspromotions,employmentperks,bettergradesetc.).Thepowerofthepersoninauthority(employer,supervisor,professor,etc.)tosexuallyharassincreasesindirectCorrelationtolackoforganizationofthepotentialvictimgroup–i.e.,women laborers in the informal sector, temporary workers, students, women ininstitutionsforthementally/physicallyhandicappedetc.aremostvulnerable.

• Sexualharassmentbycolleagues• Sexualharassmentbyclients–particularlyinprofessionswherewomen'sroleis"sexually

packaged"–suchasairhostesses,workersinbeerbars,etc.• Sexualobjectificationofanindividualthoughsexualrelationnotintended(harassment

ontheroadetc.).Thiscanalsoincludenegativecommentslike"you’refat/ugly"etc.• Hostile,anti-womanenvironment(pornographyinpublicplaces,foullanguageetc.).This
