2019 /2020Season Planning

Alignment FIRST / Leagues & Regions Overview

During the coming season, FIRST Tech Challenge NJ will continue to more closely align with the FIRST League Model.

Note: This will likely be the last year for the dual-path opportunities to the State Championship (i.e., no Qualifiers next season).

1. New Jersey is now divided into four Regions – Northern, County League, Central and Southern

• Each Region contains two “Leagues”

• Northern Region Northeast League Northwest League

• County League Region Essex County League Bergen County League

• Central Region Central East League Central West League

• Southern Region Upper South League Deep South League

2. Each region contains approximately 30 teams (based on 2018/2019 season and anticipated growth)

• See the next page for League / County correlation.

• Also, throughout the season you can visit the New Jersey website, and knowing your county, you can find your League.

3. For the 2019/2020 Season, NJ will continue its “dual advancement path” approach … through League Tournaments and Regional Qualifiers

• Each League will have a League Tournament at season’s end for all eligible teams.

• All teams are eligible to compete in their League Tournament unless already advancing via an earlier Regional Qualifier.

4. Teams have two Regional Qualifiers from which to choose – one on a Saturday, one on a Sunday

• There will be 4 advancements from each Qualifier (32 advancements)

• The remaining 24 slots are allocated to the 8 League Tournaments in proportion to the teams competing at them

Note #1: Two counties, Bergen and Essex, have nearly 30 teams and are Leagues in themselves! Actually, if FTC NJ grows at the expected rate, it may be that those counties will

overflow. If that is the case, the later registering teams will be assigned into the North West or North East Leagues (even though they may be in Bergen or Essex).

How to Register for FTC NJ Events:

• Register on the FTCNJ website for your season’s competitions.

• Registration for all Meets and Qualifiers will open on Monday, September 9th

at 12:00 noon.

• Sample screens shown on the following pages.

• Note – Only the Coach should be registering for events, not students. And, not multiple coaches, please. Let’s avoid any confusion. Thanks



• Once you identify your Region/League via the appropriate radio button, the system will lead your through your event choices.

• Per usual, bonus choices are available. Acceptance is based on empty slots, date stamp, and the # of events to which your team has been accepted.



• In each Region, there is a Saturday and Sunday Qualifier planned.

• In each Region, there is a Saturday and Sunday Large Meet planned.

• Note – Make sure that you apply early if you have a strong need for one weekend day versus the other. Date stamp is one of the acceptance factors is use.
