Ski season is just around the corner! The league race schedule is posted on the first page of this newsletter. Our first races (GS/GS) are Jan. 11-12, 2020 at Alpine Meadows. Let’s hope for great snow and a great start to the season.

The season race pass fee remains the same at $125 for 6 races. Note: $20 is refundable when you serve as a gatekeeper, race starter, or scoreboard recorder. The daily drop-in fee remains at $30 per race for racers not purchasing the season pass.

The 2019/2020 league registration form & waiver are posted on the League website (www.sierraleague.com) and the following pages of this newsletter. Send your SIGNED form, waiver, and your check (payable to Sierra League) for the season race pass to me (Nan Carnal) at 13081 Ski View Loop, Truckee, CA, 96161. You may also pay online via PayPal. You MUST, however, mail the completed & signed forms to me at the address provided or scan and email to me at [email protected].

To race, you must be a member of a ski club affiliated with the Sierra League or be a Direct League member. Many of you may know that Cabernet and Bota Baggers ski clubs have disbanded. If you raced for one of these clubs, you may elect to join another League ski club or sign up to be a Sierra Direct Member (season fee is $10). You can include the Direct Member fee in the check for the season race pass if you wish.

Editor’s note: The Sierra League Direct Member Application is included later in this newsletter

We are very proud to announce that the 2019/2020 recipient of the Frank App Award is AGAIN (YEAH!) Amelia Jane Hurt (“ A J “).

A J has been a prior recipient of this award. A J is a Sierra local and Squaw Valley Alumni. She is currently on the USSA Alpine B Ski Team and starting her third season on the world cup circuit.

Further information about A J is found later in this newsletter and will be in the December Newsletter.

“How to Prep Your Gear for Ski Season: 6 Pro Tips

by Blane Bachelor; San Francisco, CA; February 18, 2016;

https://rootsrated.com/stories/ski-season-2014-quick-guide-prepping-gear

As ski season approaches, you may be more than ready to hit the slopes—but is your gear?

For some pro tips on prepping your equipment, RootsRated spoke with Zach Yates, gear guru and repair shop manager at Footloose Sports, a popular ski shop in Mammoth, California. The bottom line, Yates says: “You want everything as predictable as possible,” in order to prevent injury and set your-self up for a kick-ass season on the slopes. Here, Yates' tips on how to make that happen.

1. START WITH YOUR SKIS.

First things first: Make like the Karate Kid and start waxing. You’ll be waxing off first—as in, removing that grubby layer of wax you (hopefully) rubbed on at the end of last season to prevent oxidation and damage to the base of the ski. Then, grab some new wax—it’s designated for various temperatures, depending on where you’ll be skiing—and don’t skimp on applying it.

“You can never overwax a ski—the more wax the better,” Yates says. “For World Cup racers, their skis are prepped 20-30 times before they hit the snow. And beginners will some-times say, 'I don’t want a lot of wax, because I don’t want to go too fast,' but wax really helps to just make the ski glide better. Whenever a ski glides very well, you won’t have any resistance, and it will make everything easier.”

2. DROP THE CASH ON DETUNING .

A few words on detuning (which basically means removing burrs and blunting the edges of tips and tails to prevent them from hooking into the snow): You can do it at home, but Yates points out that you can never get back the material you wear off. Detuning generally costs around $50, and as Yates says, “it’s worth spending the money to get it done right, just like with anything."

We tend to agree. But if you must attempt it yourself, check out YouTube for videos that show the process step-by-step.

3. G IVE YOUR BOOTS PLENTY OF LOVE .. .

Your boots are your most important piece of equipment, so be sure they’re in tip-top shape before the season starts. Start by removing the liners and foot beds, making sure no creepy-crawlies made them their summer home. After airing everything out, put it all back in and buckle the boots, to help maintain the shape.

SAFETY: Getting Your Gear in “Gear!”

Page 9: 2019 2020 Race Schedule - SIERRA LEAGUE & COUNCIL · website () and the following pages of this newsletter. Send your SIGNED form, waiver, and your check (payable to Sierra League)

PAGE 9

(Boots, cont. )

Considering buying new boots? Start shopping now, when selection is still good, and keep in mind that boots should be snug. “Everyone has a misconception that, if my boots are too tight, it’s going to hurt,” Yates says. “But it’s actually the opposite. If there’s too much movement, you’ll get a hot spot.”

But expect your new boots to be uncomfortable for the first few days. And, if you notice any trou-ble spots, a professional fitter can use a technique called punching out, which involves heating and stretching the plastic shell where necessary. (Don’t even think about trying it at home).

4. ... AND YOUR BINDINGS, TOO.

Two words here: function test. This is a critical run-through that gear specialists perform using a torque wrench on the binding to make sure it’s releasing properly. It’s crucial to get a function test on a regular basis—at least once a season, or between 15-30 days of skiing—as the factors that influence the binding setting (more on that below), including body weight, fluctuate (like that weeklong après feast of fondue and beer, for example).

“The most common injury in skiing is a knee injury from a slow, twisting backward fall, and if your bindings are set too high – say you lost weight over the summer—then you can blow out your ACL,” Yates says. “A function test costs about 20 bucks, and ACL surgery is at least $5,000.”

5. KNOW YOUR NUMBER.

If you’re renting gear, be sure to ask the rental shop what your DIN setting is, if you don’t know already. Generally, the DIN setting refers to a calibrated standard that indicates the force neces-sary to release your bindings and reflects several factors, including your age, weight, skill level and type of skier. It will be displayed on your paperwork as well as the binding itself.

Why is it so important to know your DIN number? Because it’s a good point of reference if you need your bindings adjusted. And, as Yates points out, “At a shop that’s doing everything by the book, legally they have to tell you your DIN setting, and if they don’t, a red flag should go up.”

6. GET THE SKINNY ON YOUR SKINS.

Don't overlook prepping your skins for the season, too (no judgements if you just tossed them in-to the closet after your last backcountry excursion). To remove old glue and all of the gunk that sticks to it, Yates recommends cutting or tearing a paper bag in pieces, placing them along the length of your skins and running a hot iron over them. Slowly remove the bag pieces, which will also pick up the old glue and grime.

Follow all these steps, and your gear will be as ready as you are for ski season. See you on the slopes.”

Recent Articles from the “Sierra Sun” about Tahoe Area

Alpine Skier Racers

The following two articles are from recent issue(s) of the SierraSun (Sports section) focusing on Tahoe area alpine skiers. The first article (November 22) focuses on Tahoe area skiers on the 2019-2020 U.S. Alpine Ski Team. The second article (November 20) focuses on Tahoe area skiers who participated in the Nor-Am races held at Copper Mountain November 19-22. Both articles were written by Justin Sacco who is a report for the Sierra Sun. Justin may be contacted at [email protected].

U.S. Alpine Ski Team kicks off 2019-20 season, several Truckee-Tahoe athletes on roster

The U.S. Alpine Ski Team has gotten its season underway, and a number of Truckee-Tahoe skiers are among those slated to compete for the program this year. From veterans like Travis Ganong and Bryce Bennett to the next generation of alpine skiers such as A J Hurt and Keely Cashman, the area is well represented by several of its top winter athletes. “We have experienced athletes who are leading this team, combined with young hard-charging athletes, and proven talents returning from injury,” said Alpine Director Jesse Hunt, in a post by U.S. Ski & Snowboard. “The team worked hard on the fundamentals this preparation period with the goal to re-emerge as a team bound for the top … the Sölden World Cup was a great start to the journey.” In alpine racing, Ganong, 31, and Squaw Valley’s Bryce Bennett, 27, will again be center stage for the men’s squad, having both been named to the A Team. Last year, Bennett finished in seventh place in the downhill standings, while Ganong finished 16th in the super-G standings. On the women’s B Team, Squaw Valley Ski Team’s Nina O’Brien, 21, is coming off winning the overall title on the North American Cup tour. O’Brien, of Edwards, Colorado, was also first in slalom, giant slalom, and super-G last season. Most recently, she competed in the World Cup opener, racing to 21st place in giant slalom on October 26, in Soelden, Austria.

Alpine Skier Racers (cont.)

Carnelian Bay’s A J Hurt, 18, is coming off her best season on the snow, having finished second in the North American Cup overall standings. Hurt, who is a member of the Squaw Valley Ski Team, finished first place in the downhill standings and first in the alpine combined standings. Hurt also made a World Cup start in October in Austria, but wasn’t among the top 30 times that qualified for the second round of giant slalom racing. Last season, Keely Cashman, 20, of Strawberry, claimed a pair of National Junior Championships, winning slalom and super-G. She also took first place at the National Championships in giant slalom. Cashman, who represents the Squaw Valley Ski Team, competed in the World Cup opener in Austria last month, but didn’t qualify for the second round of giant slalom racing. On the men’s B Team, Sugar Bowl Academy’s Luke Winters, 22, of Gresham, Oregon, picked up a win in slalom at the National Championships this past season, and finished the North American Cup in fifth overall. Two other skiers with local ties have also been named to the women’s developmental team. Sugar Bowl’s Ainsley Proffit, 18, of St. Louis, Missouri, and Squaw Valley Ski Team’s Alix Wilkinson, 19, of Mammoth Lakes, will both be part of the U.S. Alpine Ski Team. Athletes competing on the U.S. Ski Alpine A, B, and C team will be fully travel funded for the 2019-20 season, according to U.S. Ski & Snowboard. “The organization has also made significant headway in our efforts to decrease travel costs at the development team level, where members will be responsible for no more than $10,000 in travel and training costs with their team,” said Hunt in a May post from U.S. Ski & Snowboard.

Tahoe’s Lapanja skis to slalom sweep of first two Nor-Am races

The first two days of racing on the North American Cup circuit are complete, and local skier, Lila Lapanja, has a pair of first-place finishes to show for it.

Lapanja, 24, and several other Truckee-Tahoe skiers raced in two slalom events Tuesday and Wednesday at Copper Mountain, Colorado.

Alpine Ski Racers(cont.)

After posting the fourth fastest time in the opening round of Tuesday’s race, Lapanja threw down the top time on her final run to claim victory in the season’s first race, finishing with a total time of 1 minute, 37.65 seconds to edge another skier with ties to Squaw Valley, Foreste Peterson, 26, by 0.24.

Lapanja returned to the slopes at Copper Mountain Wednesday, and picked up a second win, topping the field by more than a second with a total time of 1:35.91.

Squaw Valley Ski Team’s Keely Cashman, 20, posted a third-place finish in Tuesday’s race, with a total time of 1:37.79. Cashman then took second in Wednesday’s race with a total time of 1:37.07.

Another Tahoe local, A J Hurt, 18, of Squaw Valley Ski Team, was competing as well, but was unable to finish her second runs during each day of competition. Hurt posted the fastest first-round time on Tuesday, and the sixth fastest first-round time Wednesday.

Skiing out of Sugar Bowl, Ainsley Proffit, 18, bounced back after not finishing her second run on Tuesday to claim a ninth-place finish Wednesday with a total time of 1:38.63.

The women’s North American Cup will next head to Lake Louise, Canada, for three days of racing, beginning on December 11.” Nina O’Brien and Luke Winters participated in the recent World Cup Slalom Races held November 23-24 in Levin, Finland. Nina just missed the flip (top 30 race times) and thus not able to have a second run. Luke, starting with bib # 40 was skiing with amazing speed and skill (opinion commentators covering the race) on his first run having split times that would have placed him at a mimimum in the top 10 until in the final gates he was not able to complete the course. Note: Both A J Hurt and Lila Lapanja are recipients of the Frank App Scholarship Award. A J, as noted in this newsletter, is our returning recipient of this award. Be sure to catch Tahoe area alpine racers who will be participating in the upcoming World Cup races at Killington, VT (November 30-December 1), Lake Louise, Alberta, CA (November 27-December 1, MEN) and beyond. Check the FIS website (www.fis-ski.com) full the calendar of World Cup, FIS, and Nor-AM upcoming races and results. Also follow the racers on the Ski Racing website: www.skiracing.com.
