LASALLIAN SCHOOLS EDUCATE OVER

Brother Adjutor of Mary founded De La Salle Institute in 1889. The school was named for St. John Baptist de La Salle (born in Rheims, France 1651; declared a Saint 1900). St. John Baptist de La Salle is the founder of the Brothers of the Christian Schools (also known as the Christian Brothers) and was a pioneer in education, while inspiring others in how to teach and care for young people. The Lasallian Mission is alive and well, as it thrives in educational and spiritual ministries all over the world.
The Christian Brothers have guided De La Salle students in their academic studies and in their spiritual development, welcoming students of all faiths. This philosophy of inclusion has continued to guide De La Salle into three centuries. In Lasallian communities, educators touch hearts, stimulate minds and cultivate leadership to prepare students for life, work, and service to society and the Church.
De La Salle made history at the beginning of the 2017-18 school year as it became fully co-educational after having been co-institutional since 2002-03. There are now approximately 820 young women and men who call our campus at 3434 S. Michigan home.
Over the years, the school has evolved to where it is today: a four-year college preparatory school that attracts students who represent all ethnic, racial, economic and religious groups from throughout Chicago and approximately 20 surrounding suburbs.
What is a Lasallian Education? » Centers on Catholic values and personal
relationships
» Emphasizes academic excellence, faith formation, and respect for the individual
» Commitment to service and social justice
» Inclusive community
» Enrichment of each student’s cultural, intellectual, physical, social and spiritual development
HISTORY OF DE LA SALLE
{ }"I fervently believe that
De La Salle is indeed the place where great futures begin for all our students and that our young
women and men are undoubtedly well prepared for all of life’s
challenges." – FR. PAUL NOVAK, DE LA SALLE PRESIDENT
Live Jesus in our Hearts Forever.
TECHNOLOGYEntering the fourteenth year of computers in the classrooms at De La Salle, all students are empowered with a Lenovo convertible computer with dual-functionality. Students can use their computer in the conventional way of typing or convert their computer to a laptop with touch-screen, handwriting capabilities to meet all of their educational needs. Teachers, students, and parents have access to Schoology for school updates, grades, and submitting electronic assignments.
In addition to student computers, De La Salle offers a wide variety of educational technology. Students have the opportunity to take online courses created and taught by teachers at De La Salle. The “Project Lead the Way” curriculum is supported with a fully-equipped maker's lab with a 3-D printer, robotics and underwater robotics equipment and a drone.
COMPREHENSIVE CURRICULUMDe La Salle offers three programs of study including Honors, College Prep and LaSalle College Prep. Each program allows students to flourish and sets them up for the demands of college and continuing education. The Honors program challenges the most gifted students. The College Prep program is for students who aspire to attend one of the nation’s top universities. The LaSalle College Prep program is for students who require assistance to achieve their maximum potential.
ACCREDITATION De La Salle is accredited by AdvancEd, a global leader in advancing excellence in education. The school holds the highest rating of Highly Functional. Accreditation is a method of quality assurance designed to distinguish schools that clearly demonstrate continuous improvement and high academic standards. The process assures parents that a child’s school is of the highest quality. De La Salle has been accredited since the onset of Illinois accreditation in 1923.
Our vision regarding the education of children is recognized as progressive. This inspiration surrounds De La Salle’s approach to learning.Technology has been an integral part of the De La Salle education over the last decade. All students use a portable Tablet PC as a computer, notebook and resource for all of their classes. Each computer is equipped with interactive programs including Microsoft Office and electronic textbooks. Empowering students with technology increases collaboration in the classroom and allows students access to a wealth of academic resources and information. Students use their Tablet PC to access e-books, take notes, organize their work and schedules, submit homework and connect to the Internet. Students have access to their computers 24/7, over the weekend and during holidays. Our faculty has undergone extensive training to facilitate the use of technology in the classroom. The learning process does not end at the conclusion of the school day.
INNOVATIVE LEARNING EXPERIENCE
DIVERSE ACADEMICSAs a Catholic and Lasallian school, our curriculum has a special focus on STREAM: Science, Technology, Religion, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics. With an ever-changing world that places an emphasis on careers in the STREAM-related fields, our students are more than prepared to pursue those paths as a result of our incorporation of “Project Lead the Way” that will expand and strengthen our curriculum. Classes in engineering and robotics top the list of what is offered to our Meteors. Students taking the engineering class have an opportunity to earn college credit. By becoming members of our Robotics Club, Coding Club and 3-D Printing Club, students are able to put engineering, scientific and technological concepts into practice through extracurricular activities.
In an era of globalization, appreciation of language is also a necessity. De La Salle makes the study of language available by offering French, Spanish and Spanish for Native Speakers. In addition, students gain knowledge of the cultures and the countries where the language is spoken and develop a deeper appreciation for the diversity of people around the globe.
Our Honors students are required to participate in a capstone thesis under the direction of a faculty advisor that they must complete prior to graduation. Students then defend their research in front of faculty members. This is yet another way in which De La Salle best prepares our students for college and their great futures.

Placing second was Dinah Ortiz ’20 (right), whose bridge held 255 pounds and garnering third place was Mateo Strainis ’20 (left), whose bridge withstood 220 pounds. In all, 22 Meteors created bridges that held 150 pounds or better.

I enjoyed the Honors geometry class bridge design competition so much
that led me to pursue a degree in Civil Engineering at the University of Illinois
at Urbana-Champaign."

De La Salle’s resources are
extensive and include:
Navigating the maze of choices for future career and educational opportunities is an incredibly important part of the high school experience. De La Salle guides our students and their families every step of the way.
Our support and counseling resources ensure that students make decisions in an informed and less pressure-filled way as they work to identify their dreams and goals, along with their unique strengths, interests, talents and values.
Leadership and teamwork, innovation and vision, and creativity and imagination are not always measured by grades; we ensure students identify these talents within themselves. All these pieces together help to narrow down their choices for the future and present themselves in the best possible light as they make choices about higher education and career paths.
COLLEGE PARTNERSHIPSDe La Salle Institute maintains educational partnerships with several colleges and universities to provide academic services and enrichment to our high school students. Adjacent is a list of some of the colleges with which we partner:

EARN COLLEGE CREDIT
DE LA SALLE'S CLASS OF 2019 WILL BE ATTENDING:
De La Salle offers several ways to earn college credit. We offer our students 10 Advanced Placement (AP) classes. These standardized classes are sponsored by the College Board, and are generally recognized to be equivalent to undergraduate courses in college. Participating colleges may grant college credit to students who obtain high enough scores on the AP exam.
De La Salle allows students to earn college credit through the Program for Advanced College Credit (PACC), a curriculum through St. Mary’s University of Minnesota. This program enables students to take university-level classes at De La Salle. The teachers and credits for these courses are certified at the university level. De La Salle offers six classes that allow students to receive college credit as long as they earn a grade of a “B” or higher. Unlike other advanced credit programs, PACC does not rely on a single test. PACC courses take into account the work and effort put into the entire course on various tests and projects.

ATHLETICS AT DE LA SALLE
At De La Salle, we believe working together as a team, developing discipline, and a strong work ethic all play critical roles in the growth of the student.
De La Salle students are known as the Meteors. All student-athletes must maintain a 2.0 grade-point average (GPA) in order to participate. The Meteors are members of the Illinois High School Association (IHSA). The Meteors are often recognized as members of all academic sports teams – cumulatively, the team holds a GPA of 3.0 or better. These high-achieving students showcase the top level of academic and athletic excellence.
We offer 18 different sports for our young men, who compete in the Chicago Catholic League (CCL), while 17 sports are offered to our young women, who compete in the Girls Catholic Athletic Conference (GCAC).
The De La Salle campus houses state-of-the-art athletic facilities. The campus has a 52,000-square-foot competition gymnasium, three full-size basketball courts, three volleyball courts, an indoor track, fitness center, two batting cages, a wrestling room, a training room with access to a fulltime trainer, six locker rooms and outdoor playing fields for football, soccer, lacrosse, baseball and softball.
De La Salle’s athletic department fosters an atmosphere that enables the student-athlete not only to be coached in the intricacies of his or her individual sport, but to learn the values and lessons of life that are closely associated with the Lasallian experience.

De La Salle offers students much more than outstanding academics....we also offer a wide range of extracurricular activities. With more than 40 clubs and organizations spanning a wide range of interests, students are able to develop skills such as leadership, teamwork, responsibility and self-discipline. Students are strongly encouraged to participate in activities that will broaden their social, academic and cultural interests.
The De La Salle philosophy is that student involvement in organizations outside of the classroom is an important component of the learning process and supplements traditional academics. As high school is an ideal time for students to explore and experience different activities, we encourage all students to become involved in at least one extracurricular activity, and many of our students participate in several.
Extracurricular activities range from leadership and membership roles with the school newspaper and yearbook, to participating in clubs that focus on fine arts, performing arts, and music. We offer groups that center around community service and volunteer opportunities, groups that focus on different educational and scholastic topics, and groups that are language and culture based.

STUDENT AND FAMILY EXPERIENCE
De La Salle provides opportunities to develop each student to the best of their abilities with emphasis on academic innovation, an ability to nurture students’ appreciation for the arts, positive athletic development, and the structure of a co-educational model all contributing to the student experience and exemplifying the true meaning of a Lasallian education. Best of all, De La Salle students make lifelong friendships with their peers from all over Chicago and its surrounding suburbs.
De La Salle isn’t just a building in which our students spend each weekday from 8 am-2:45 pm. It is a place where our young women and men receive the best in Lasallian secondary education from a staff that is very professional in its approach, is committed to seeing each student succeed to the best of their abilities and genuinely cares about educating the hearts and minds of our Meteors.
When our students graduate from De La Salle, they know that they are more than ready to accept all of life’s challenges awaiting them and that they are indeed prepared for their great futures. Our Meteors spend four years as students in our school and everything they learn at De La Salle during that timeframe will remain with them for the rest of their lives.
{ }"Outside the classroom, I’ve
become friends with students who are from different
neighborhoods and backgrounds, but what we all have in common
is that we want to build our futures upon the solid foundation that our De La Salle education provides."
