Mathematics

Pre-Algebra Instructor: Delfi Seeger Tuition: $400 Middle/Highschool Course Description: The Pre- Algebra (Saxon) course is an extension of the concepts taught in previous math courses. This course will emphasize the application of pre-algebraic concepts to concepts to prepare for advanced high school math courses. Pre-Algebra is designed to facilitate students’ transition from the concrete concepts of arithmetic to the abstract concepts of algebra and later math courses. Topics include variables, expressions, integers, solving equations, multi-step equations and inequalities, factors, fractions, exponents, rational numbers, equations, ratio, proportion, probability, percents, linear functions, real numbers, right triangles, measurement, area, volume, data analysis, probability, polynomials, nonlinear functions, angle relationships, transformations, as well as additional topics from geometry and general mathematics. This class will be interactive with multiple opportunities to incorporate learned skills in real life applications. Quizzes and tests will be used to assess the students’ progress in this course. Pre-requisite: Middle Math or proficiency demonstrated on the placement test. The Diagnostic test must be taken and submitted before your placement in the course will be confirmed. Required Materials: Saxon ½ Textbook, Student 3rd Edition, Grade 8, 2004 ISBN-13: 978-1565771499 ISBN-10: 1565771494 Student Tests & Answers 1½” binder, notebook paper, 4-5 dividers, pencils, dry erase markers Algebra 1 (Saxon Track) Instructor: Robin Parker ([email protected]) Tuition: $400 Grades 9-10 Course Description: Students will continue deepening their understanding of algebraic processes in this Algebra 1 course. Units include: Expressions and Equations, Linear Functions, Polynomials and Nonlinear Functions, Radical and Rational Functions and Data Analysis. The conceptualization of the skills will be emphasized to enhance student’s understanding of math. Group activities, problem solving and application to real life will be incorporated throughout using drawing/models and hands-on where

necessary. Class time will be interactive with strong student participation encouraged. Assignments will include practice problems, reviews, quizzes, tests, standardized test prep. Internet links or interactive online activities may also be assigned for further reinforcement.

what life was like for children during pivotal periods in history (from ancient times to modern times). Class discussions of these moving stories will include examination of how the main characters' faith in God and moral character affected their lives and impacted their world. The teacher will provide Progeny Press study guides which deeply explore each work's themes and literary devices, as well as provide students related grammar, vocabulary, and writing lessons. After completing this course, students will earn one full English credit. This summer, students will have a vote in which novels are selected from the teachers' list of classics highly recommended, by the Christian Coalition. I believe my students and I will be challenged by the heroes in these pages to become better readers, writers and representatives of God’s grace. Required Materials: Students must arrive to class with a sharpened pencil and eraser, wide-rule notebook paper, and a notebook or duo tang folder with pockets. Please reserve a minimum of 1 hour for homework each weekday. Books to purchase in time for your child's first day of class: 1. 8th Grade English Instructor: Mary Kinney ([email protected]) Tuition: $400 Class Description: Eighth graders will earn one full English credit exploring their favorite American literature, both fiction and biographical material, as well as select American classics (chosen by the instructor). One major component of this course will be the critique and analysis of literature, both fiction and non-fiction, through the prism of a Christian world view. Equally important, will be weekly composition in class and at home-- from informal journaling to MLA and APA formatted essays. From our literary analysis and composition will flow weekly opportunities to improve grammar, expand vocabulary and hone research skills. This course will encourage students to appreciate the great American literary classics and to take their writing to a new level in both sophistication and creativity! The teacher will be providing weekly handouts of grammar worksheets from "The Language Mechanic" and weekly packets of writing instructions, tips and samples--therefore, parents will not need to purchase writing or grammar curriculum. Required materials: Students must arrive to class with a sharpened pencil and eraser, wide-rule notebook paper, and a notebook or duo tang folder with pockets.

A diagnostic writing sample will be required for this course. This will be sent to parents after registration. Course Description: This course is designed to help students improve their written and oral communication skills and become more confident with different forms of writing. Beginning with the four types of writing (Descriptive, Persuasive, Expository, and Narrative), students will learn how to write in a variety of formats to express a range of meaning. Initially, the students will begin with the elements of a well-structured paragraph and the development of clear solid thesis statements. They will then quickly progress towards the mastery of a multi paragraph essay writing. Basic grammar and punctuation will be needed. High school students who are eager to learn how become better wordsmiths and practice public speaking, will benefit from this class. Students will also be working on the skill of impromptu writing, notetaking, creative writing, peer writing and peer editing. By the end of the year, students should be able to command the use of evidence in their writing, break down a writing prompt, write a multiple paragraph essay, while improving overall sentence structure. Students will be memorizing 7-9 writing outlines that will help them tackle most high school/collegiate writing assignments. Although the focus of this class will primarily be on composition writing, we will be reading short stories and incorporating those themes in various essay formats. This course will require about 2 -3 hours of coursework a week. Class time will be fast paced, high energy, and very interactive.

The first textbook (pre common core) is what I used in my classroom years ago. It has colorful illustrations, easy to understand concepts, built in experiments and lots of opportunity for review within its rich and thorough content. This book has over 800 pages (big book). The second textbook is a supplemental text incorporating Bible plus science-based proof to contradict some secular theories of evolution and radiometric dating of the rocks/fossils. Students will be required to create a science project for a science fair in the Spring. They may work alone or in teams of two. Textbook: McDougal Littell Science Grade 7 (this text covers almost the same content as in grade 8 textbook) ISBN-10: 0618571280 ISBN-13: 978-0618571284 https://www.amazon.com/McDougal-Littell-Science-Florida-Student/dp/0618571280 Textbook: It Couldn’t Just Happen by Lawrence O. Biology – Lecture and Lab (Honors Option) Instructor: Cara Abbott ([email protected]) Tuition: $400 + $75 lab fee Course Description: This high school course presents a comprehensive overview of the Science of Life. Starting with the amazing balance of physical conditions for life on earth, students learn about the organization of life from the basic unit, the cell, to the interaction of species within ecosystems, giving emphasis to the vocabulary and physiology of biology. Using a young-earth Creation-based approach, the course begins with a general survey of the chemistry of life, basic physical properties in life processes, and the essentials of cell biology. The students learn about the cell by looking at various organisms in the Kingdoms Monera and Protista. An introduction to the fundamentals of genetics allows students to grasp the Creator’s amazing variation and biodiversity in His creation. Functional tissues and organ systems as well as reproductive cycles will be studied in depth in fungi, plants, and animals lead to the classification of organismal groups. These concepts will be reinforced at BCEP through a variety of dissections, models and microscope labs. Interactions between species, populations, and communities of organisms will be explored in the topic of ecology. With the foundational knowledge of classification by systems and ecological interactions, students will examine the controversy of the interpretation of scientific evidence leading to theories in macro- and microevolution.

Students may complete Biology with Lab for regular credit or for honors credit. Honors credit will require additional, slightly more difficult assignments and a higher level of examination.
