  • Valley Youth House’s (VYH) responsive, effective programming serves as a strong foundation for youth and their families, offering far more than a bed to sleep on or a specific type of service. Rather, VYH offers individualized options for young people and their families that empower them to build healthy futures.

The COVID-19 pandemic has dramatically affected VYH, and as an essential life-sustaining business, our team continues to work with young people and families in need every day to ensure that services continue in these uncertain times. Such commitment is life changing for those in need and inspiring for all of us who get to work alongside our heroes on the front lines of service delivery.

With economic uncertainty and an increasing demand for philanthropic dollars present, assessing our effectiveness is more important than ever. The ultimate goal is for Valley Youth House to continue providing support to those in need while best positioning ourselves for long term success to meet the needs of the next generation to come through our doors, which will always remain open.

Your generous and continued support allows us to remain flexible, address shifting needs within the communities we serve, and grow and flourish.

Thank you, sincerely, for your help.

  • 2019-2020 ACCOMPLISHMENTS

Y Working in partnership with Homeward Initiative and the VYH Pride Task Force to establish a Host Homes Program in Philadelphia for LGBTQ+ youth experiencing homelessness or housing insecurity.

Y Participated with PointSource Youth on national evaluation of Host Homes model.

Y The Synergy Project of Allentown and Bucks County provided technical assistance and training to the Western Pennsylvania Continuum of Care in preparation for its first-ever youth count.

Y VYH expansion of Bridge2Home Host Homes Programs, into Fayette and Greene Counties.

Y School-based trauma-informed services established in Allentown and Bethlehem School Districts through funding from the United Way of the Greater Lehigh Valley. A Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency grant received by Northampton Area School District provided Cognitive Behavioral Interventions for Trauma in Schools.

Y Expanded Transitional Housing/Rapid Re-Housing Programs in Montgomery and Lackawanna Counties to work with youth ages 18-24 who are experiencing homelessness.

Y Michelle Wilson, Zander Douglas, and David Acevedo from Project Silk Lehigh Valley represented VYH as Advocates for Youth for National Youth HIV & AIDS Awareness Day (NYHAAD.) The Youth Ambassador program is comprised of young leaders and activists who come together to promote a message of prevention, treatment, care, and youth empowerment.

Y Project Silk Lehigh Valley located in the Bradbury-Sullivan LGBT Community Center in Allentown expanded to provide sexual health care, HIV/STI testing, and to create a community among black, indigenous, people of color and queer identifying older adults ages 21+, in the Haus of Shadez Program.

Y Opened GLO, an LGBTQ+ drop-in center in Harrisburg, made possible by the collaboration of Hamilton Health Center, the LGBT Center of Central PA, UPMC Pinnacle REACCH Program and Valley Youth House with funding through the University of Pittsburgh.

Y Expanded the Rapid Re-Housing Program in Scranton, which helps individuals living on the streets or in emergency shelters solve the practical and immediate challenges to obtaining permanent housing while reducing the amount of time they experience homelessness, avoiding a return to homelessness, and linking to community resources that enable them to achieve housing stability in the long term.

Y Hosted 79 student interns from 41 universities.

Y Selected by FFT LLC to be a host site of the Functional Family Therapy Externship Program. Ten Functional Family Therapists from sites around the world attended this training program at Valley Youth House’s Program and Administrative Center in Bethlehem. Therapists were in attendance from Australia, England, New York, Arizona, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania. There are currently only two other FFT externship sites in the United States.

FFT LLC is very selective in choosing host sites, so it is a great honor to have been chosen to host these important trainings. Since the FFT Externship Program provides supervision and live training that helps therapists take their

services to the next level, the FFT families participating in the program are the ones who ultimately benefit. – Michael Ramsey, MS, LPC, Program Supervisor, Family Intervention Program & Functional Family Therapy Program

Desiree Rattigan and her family attended the Strengthening Families Program 10-14, held in Fountain Hill. Seven weekly sessions focus on reducing family related risk factors in young adolescent children and their parents/caregivers.

Last year, this program was held at 10 schools in Lehigh County with specific activities and lessons designed to:

Y Help parents/caregivers learn nurturing skills that support their children.

Y Teach parents/caregivers how to effectively discipline and guide their youth.

Y Give youth a healthy future orientation and appreciation of their parents/caregivers.

Y Teach youth skills for dealing with stress and peer pressure.

Our family absolutely has been able to

    effectively communicate much bet ter.

Jessica Rodriguez-Colon, VYH Case Manager for the Truancy Intervention Program (TIP), wanted to provide

a unique experience for Daisy Dutan, a 9-year-old girl with autism from Allentown. Daisy is nonverbal and rarely has

opportunities to do things outside of home and school.

Jessica approached her friend, Tera Burnett, owner of Camp Cake in Nazareth to ask if Daisy and her parents, Jose and

Diana Dutan, could participate in a cake workshop. At Camp Cake, Daisy had the opportunity to design her own cake, and blew kisses at Jessica as a sign of her appreciation.

TIP provides outreach and counseling services for elementary students who have missed 10+ days of school.

In-home services provide intensive interventions blending case management and therapeutic services, educational services, and out-client services to children,

    EMERGENCY SERVICES / SHELTER

STABLE HOUSING IS VITAL TO IMPROVING THE HEALTH OF HOMELESS YOUTH.Homelessness has a direct impact on the adverse physical, emotional, psychological, cognitive, and social development of young people. The frontal cortex, the area of the brain that controls reasoning, is still developing in teens. Therefore, while living on the streets, youth are more likely to engage in risky behaviors and have increased likelihood of exposure to violence. As a result of these stressful events, rates of serious mental illness among homeless youth range from 19-50%.

The Synergy Project walked, kayaked, and biked

to reach 2,521 homeless youth through street outreach programs in Allentown, Bucks

    County, Dauphin County, and Philadelphia.

youth were served at the Lehigh Valley Shelter in Bethlehem & the Bucks Shelter in Warminster, both

INDEPENDENT LIVING, HOUSING & PERMANENCY SERVICES

Dauphin County caseworker Jamie Lester remembers meeting Rolando Cruz Castro for the first time in October 2015 during a Family Group Conference. He was quiet and seemed very sad. Jamie got to know

Rolando while he attended Independent Living classes and served on the Youth Advisory Board. During this time, Rolando and VYH Life Skills

Coordinator David Banks developed a close relationship, too.

In Spring 2019, Rolando joined the Navy. Jamie and David connected Rolando to a recruiter and helped him through the process of interviewing, taking the Armed

Services Vocational Aptitude Battery, and beginning the Delayed Entry Program. On December 12, 2019, David and Jamie drove Rolando to the Military Entrance Processing

Station (MEPS) for departure to boot camp in Illinois. Rolando used his one phone call to inform Jamie he had made it there safely.

Rolando’s graduation took place on February 7, 2020. He could invite three people to the ceremony and sent two of those invitations to Jamie and David. They committed to attend via letters and began making travel arrangements, sometimes with their own money. David said, “We told him we were coming but he had trouble finding us in the audience. I found him after it was over, walked up behind him and tapped him on the shoulder. His face lit up when he saw me and he turned around and gave me a hug. I then pointed Jamie out in the audience as she made her way down. That was my favorite moment of the day: the look on his face when he realized we really were there to support him.”

Jamie shared a graduation photo of Rolando in which, she said, “he doesn’t have that look of worry, of contemplation” she had seen on his face many times before. Rolando shared his gratitude, saying, “It was very nice having them come out and be part of my graduation especially with my mom not being able to come.” He added that Jamie and David gave him “one of the biggest pushes I ever had in my life... They will always be a part of my life. They’ve helped me get so far, make something of myself and become a better person.”

Since I met Jamie and David, they’ve been very supportive of everything I’ve been doing. They constantly pushed me to do bet ter, and I couldn’t be more grateful for that.

    9ANNUAL REPORT 2019-2020

  • It’s 4:00 PM at the Achieving Independence Center (AIC) and dozens of young people fill the hallways preparing to attend their daily life skills classes. Juliana, an instructor with Planned Parenthood, is filled with nostalgia as she walks down the halls to meet her students. Today is a full circle moment for Juliana on her journey to independence.

In 2013, a 17-year-old Juliana was referred to Valley Youth House and the AIC. As a young person in foster care and a struggling senior in high school Juliana was filled with fears not having stable housing. Her caseworker encouraged her to take advantage of the life skill classes offered at AIC in order to prepare for a transition to independent living.

Juliana excelled through the curriculum at the AIC as she continued her senior year in Philadelphia and soon found herself living independently in her own apartment with an internship at Planned Parenthood.

Upon graduation Juliana enrolled at the Community College of Philadelphia before transferring to Temple University to receive her Bachelor’s degree in Public Health. During her time in college Juliana frequently returned to the AIC to assist as a tutor and a counselor for the Summer College Bound program. Always one to give back, Juliana, sees the importance of the AIC for young people, “The beauty of the AIC is the ability to be around people who have a shared experience. At the AIC nobody questions things that everybody already understands. That’s so helpful to youth who are struggling with not being connected to their families.”

After her time at Temple University, Juliana returned to the AIC as a full-time instructor with Planned Parenthood, a role in which she provides daily instruction on healthy relationships and safe sex choices for young people. Juliana considers Valley Youth House and the AIC to be the catalyst that helped support her personal and professional growth. “It’s so cool that I now get to work with the same people who positively impacted my life. I think that’s pretty awesome.” For Juliana walking the halls of the AIC is truly a full circle moment.

What is so amazing about the AIC is the ability to have all of these really important resources in one space. I mean, it’s really a one-stop-shop.

  • “ The youth we serve are smart, talented, resilient and beautiful. I came to Valley Youth House because I wanted to be a part of them realizing those things for themselves. I have stayed almost 18 years not only for them, but my brilliant, impassioned and talented co-workers. They are now my friends and family.” – Elizabeth R. Allen, MA, Supervisor, Staff Development

“ I began my time with Valley Youth House 18 years ago as a graduate intern and have spent my career working with the Family Intervention Program (assisting families with the impact of substance abuse) and Functional Family Therapy Program (working with families where a youth is at risk of juvenile justice involvement). Valley Youth House’s commitment to working with families whose struggles are often underserved and marginalized is inspiring to me. The agency’s mission aligns with my belief that bringing hope to families that are in need creates the opportunity for positive change.” – Michael Ramsey, MS, LPC, Program Supervisor,

Family Intervention Program & Functional Family Therapy Program

“ I work at Valley Youth House because I believe housing is a human right. I believe in advocating for change so that marginally and institutionally oppressed young people are able to thrive. My colleagues and myself are fierce advocates for inclusive, accessible services for our LGBTQ+ community, and I’m proud of the work we do to make our offices safer spaces for all people to feel comfortable in being their full selves.” – Reek Bell, Office Manager and Assistant to VP of Philadelphia

“ I am passionate about serving youth and families with Project Silk Lehigh Valley because just one supportive and accepting adult can make a difference in young LGBTQ+ lives. Growing up, having a supportive and respectful adult to talk to about relationships, gender and sexuality or the struggle to be respected was vitally important to me. I am honored to be able to make that difference in the life of even one young person.” – Kylin Camburn, B.A., Case Manager and GSA Coordinator, Project Silk

(VYH), James Eck, President of Quadratus Construction Management, Inc., Eric Scheler, VP & District Manager, Commerce Construction & Majestic Realty Co., Rick Koze, President of Kay Builders, Inc., Jason Engelhardt, Principal/VP of Langan Engineering & Environmental Services, and Tom Harrington (R).

With the help of Kay Builders, Inc., Majestic Realty Co., Commerce Construction, Brooks Development Group and many more construction companies and contributors, Valley Youth House has embarked on a $1.8 million project to rebuild Camp Fowler’s seven cabins that house the youth and staff attending overnight camps. The current cabins are 80-years-old and despite best efforts, these outdated cabins have finally exceeded their usable lifespan. The new cabins will have improved amenities including heating, air conditioning, indoor plumbing, fire protection and sprinklers, which will expand possibilities for year-round programming at Camp Fowler.

Phase 1 of the project includes the demolition and construction of the first three youth cabins, completed in June 2020 (pictured below). Phase 2 of the project will begin this summer and include the demolition and construction of the final three youth cabins and a 2-story staff cabin.

THANK YOUWe remain grateful to the following generous

supporters for ensuring that Camp Fowler continues to serve young people for many years to come.

    Special thanks to

    their first annual fundraising campaign.

They raised $2,019 through cheer performance activities and a happy

    seasons, the Lehigh Valley

    favorite, the Teddy Bear Toss.
