In her first season at the helm, Pruitt led the Lady Braves to the second round of the SWAC tournament for the first time since the 2011-12 season and put her team in a prime

A former head coach in the SWAC, Andre Payne has been added to the Alcorn State University women’s basketball staff as assistant coach in July 2019. Payne will transition over to the women’s game after spending the previous five seasons as the men’s head coach at Mississippi Valley State. “I am excited and looking forward to being apart of Coach Pruitt’s staff and the Alcorn family,” said Payne. “The talent that we have returning along with the new recruits, I believe it will be a special season for us.” At MVSU, he coached two all-SWAC performers, made four trips to the SWAC Tournament including a semifinals appearance in 2016 and was named Mississippi Valley State University’s Coach of the Year last season.

“Coach Payne brings so much experience to this program because he’s been a head coach before and knows how it feels to be in the first chair,” Pruitt said. “He’s a first-class guy and even better family man. We are delighted to have him on The

Reservation.” Prior to MVSU, Payne served as both the director of athletics and head men’s basketball coach at Wiley College.

As a coach at Wiley, he turned in an overall record of 146-104 (89-69 in conference) while leading the Wildcats to the NAIA Tournament in his first campaign (2006-07), ending a 34-year tournament drought. Payne guided his teams to three 20-win seasons, two Red River Athletic Conference Tournament Championships and accumulated a .500 or better record in six of his eight seasons. Payne was listed among the NAIA’s Top-25 Active Wins Leaders at the conclusion of the 2012 season.

Payne began his coaching career as an assistant at Texas College for three seasons before being promoted to the head position prior to the 2001-02 season. He accumulated a 62-60 overall mark while going 50-34 during five seasons at the helm. He guided the program to seven trips to the Red River Athletic Conference Tournament and led the squad to its first-ever appearance in the Conference Championship Game during his tenure.

Payne was born in Auburn, Alabama and graduated from Alabama A&M with a Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering. He went on to earn his Master’s degree in human performance and sports from New Mexico Highlands University.

In Alcorn’s Last Outing...

LORMAN, Miss. – The Alcorn State University women's basketball program surrendered only 53 points to the Lady Jaguars as it held the visitors to its lowest scoring night in over a month during a hard-fought 58-53 victory.

The Lady Braves (12-16, 8-8 SWAC) improved to 8-3 inside the friendly confines of the Davey L. Whitney Complex this season and have gone 5-2 during conference play in Lorman including four straight home wins.

Sophomore Diamond Hall went 6-of-8 (.750) from the floor while swiping a career-high five steals and scoring a tied for game-high 13 points. She also grabbed nine boards to come up shy of a double-double by one.

Freshman Cayla Obillo also poured in 13 points with nine of those coming via the deep three-pointer.

Junior Jamaysha Bernard added to her team-best block total, giving her nine on the campaign with her rejection against the Lady Jaguars.

Southern (13-14, 11-5 SWAC) outrebounded the Lady Braves by a margin of 46 to 36, becoming the fourth SWAC opponent to log a ten-plus rebounding margin on the squad this year.

Raven White accumulated 12 points and 12 boards to lead the Lady Jaguars in both categories as she put together a double-double on the evening.

Alyric Scott and Brittany Rose both fell painfully short of double-doubles as well with Scott posting 11 points with nine rebounds while Rose pulled down ten boards to go along with nine points.

The Columbia blue and gold began the contest by contributing nine of the first 14 points to take a 9-5 lead. Alcorn would go on a run from there with an 11-2 surge to end the frame including 11 unanswered to claim a 16-11 advantage at the end of the first.

SU closed the gap to one at 17-16 with 8:33 in the second but that was the last bucket they would

get over the next eight minutes as the Lady Braves went up 24-16 with a free throw by freshman Nia McCalphia at the 1:36 mark. Southern would break its long cold spell with a triple by Alyric Scott with 33 seconds left to set the halftime score at 24-19, Alcorn.

Alcorn kept the momentum going to a degree, upping its advantage to eight at 30-22. The purple and gold would see its edge drop down to two at the end of the period with the Lady Braves clinging to a 38-36 upper-hand.

Southern would force the first tie of the game since the 4:15 mark of the first quarter just over a minute into the fourth as the score read 40-40 and took its first lead in nearly three full quarters when the Lady Jaguars went ahead 48-46 on an Alyric Scott layup with 4:01 left in regulation. SU held a 51-49 lead with 3:18 remaining but the Lady Braves' offense got the job down the stretch, outscoring the Lady Jaguars by a count of 9-2 to secure a confidence building 58-53 victory.

ABOUT ALCORN STATE UNIVERSITYAlcorn is the oldest public historically black land-grant institu-tion in the United States and the second-oldest state-supported institution of higher learning in Mississippi. Alcorn University was founded in 1871 as a result of the people of Mississippi’s efforts to educate the descendants of formerly enslaved Africans. It was named in honor of the sitting governor of Mississippi, James L. Alcorn.

Alcorn is situated in Claiborne County, seven miles west of Lorman, 80 miles south of the capital city of Jackson, 45 miles south of Vicksburg, and 40 miles north of Natchez. The site was originally occupied by Oakland College, a school established by Presby-terians in 1828; the state of Mississippi purchased the Oakland campus for $40,000 and named it Alcorn University. Hiram R. Revels resigned his seat as a United States senator to become the University’s first president. The state legislature provided $50,000 cash annually for the University’s first 10 years to support its estab-lishment and overall operation. Additionally, 30 acres of land were sold for $188,928; Alcorn received three-fifths of the proceeds, or $113,400. This funding was used for Alcorn’s agricultural and mechanical components.

Initially, the institution’s three major study components were the four-year college track, the two-year college track, and the three-year graded track. Students spent the morning, from seven o’clock until noon, in classes. In the afternoon, they worked in various University shops for eight cents per hour. Room and board, includ-ing laundry, cost about $5 a month.

In 1878, Alcorn University became Alcorn Agricultural and Me-chanical College. The college was exclusively for males at first, but eventually women were admitted. A dormitory for women was built in 1902. Over time, facilities increased from three historic buildings to more than 80 structures. The original purchase of 225 acres of land grew to a campus of more than 1,700 acres.

In 1974, Alcorn Agricultural and Mechanical College became Alcorn State University. Governor William L. Waller signed House Bill 298, granting this status. Alcorn has thrived by continuously accomplishing dynamic goals and objectives despite limited resource allocations from the state. By the early 1990s, Alcorn’s

physical plant and academic programs evolved into a more diversified Univer-sity. The student population is now representative of more than 65 coun-ties, more than 30 states, and at least 18 foreign countries. The University pro-vides an undergrad-uate education that enables students to successfully pursue work in graduate and professional schools, engage in teaching, and enter other professions.

As Mississippi recognized the importance of educating all citizens, Alcorn has gained status and importance. From the original eight faculty members in 1871, the University has grown to more than 800 faculty and staff. The student body has increased from 179 students to more than 4,000 students with varied ethnic back-grounds. Although early graduates of Alcorn had limited horizons, today’s graduates are successful in their chosen professions, and many are outstanding entrepreneurs. Throughout Alcorn’s history, the leadership and faculty remained committed to enhancing the institution’s image and to attracting young people whose interest is the pursuit and receipt of a quality education. Over the decades, “the college that excelled against great odds” has become one of the leading universities in the nation. Alcorn State University oper-ates divisions with degree programs in more than 50 areas, includ-ing the bachelor’s, master’s, and educational specialist degrees.

The collaborative strength and contributions of Alcorn’s past 18 presidents during its more than 140 years of existence have enabled the institution to excel. On March 4, 2014, the Mississippi Board of Trustees of State Institutions of Higher Learning voted unanimously to appoint Dr. Alfred Rankins Jr. as Alcorn State Uni-versity’s 19th president. President Rankins' background and vision are strategically aligned with Alcorn’s history and tradition. He is poised to expeditiously move Alcorn State University to the next level of excellence.
