There are holidays throughout the year, secular and Jewish, that evoke feelings of joy and celebration, such as Independence Day, Thanksgiving and Hanukkah; and there are days that evoke feelings of sadness and reflection,

including Memorial Day, the anniversary of 9/11, Yom HaShoah, and a loved one’s yartzheit.

Our calendars, both Jewish and secular, are filled with moments of joy and moments of sorrow. The Jewish calendar, however, features two entire months, one of which is filled with sorrow and the other with joy.

The Talmud teaches that once the month of Av [when the First and Second Temples were destroyed] begins, joy decreases. However, when the month of Adar [during which we celebrate Purim] begins, joy increases. (B.T. Ta’anit 29a)

If we were to apply Marie Kondo’s KonMari Method to Jewish holidays and observances, we would discard Tisha b’Av and other fast days, while keeping festive celebrations like Hanukkah and Purim. Purim gives us joy; Tisha B’av does not. However, Jewish life doesn’t work that way. Sorrow and simcha coexist and we often make quick transitions from one to the other.

During the month of Adar, whose catch phrase adapted from the Talmudic teaching is, “Be happy, it’s Adar,” traditional Jews observe a fast the day before Purim. Ta’anit Esther—the Fast of Esther, is one of our tradition’s four minor fast days. This dawn to dusk fast connects to the three-day fast described in the Scroll of Esther. As Esther prepared to appeal to King Ahashverosh to cancel the decree that, if enacted, would allow for the murder of all the Jews of Shushan, she and the Jews of Shushan fasted for three days. She readied herself to approach the king, without being summoned, which was rarely done. She knew she might die for that courageous act; however, she eventually came to understand that she had to take a risk in order to save her fellow Jews (and herself, too). Today, this fast is marked by a manageable dawn to dusk fast, for those who observe it.

Once the fast ends, however, we quickly transition into a time of great joy and frivolity. We celebrate Purim by following customs described towards the end of the Scroll of Esther. We give gifts baskets of food called (mishloach manot)—filled with hamentashen and other treats-- to our friends. We give gifts to the poor (matanot le’evyonim). We put on costumes and enjoy much merry-making with our friends. We read Megillat Esther (the Scroll of Esther), create parodies of the Purim story, and some are known to enjoy a drink or two. When the Talmud declares, “When Adar begins, joy increases,” we begin the countdown to Purim.

I am looking forward to celebrating my first Purim with my Shir Ami family in a couple of weeks, as well as continuing the celebrations through the month of Adar (which coincides with March) as our community comes to gather

for our Clergy Installation weekend at the end of the month.

We will celebrate Purim with our religious school students and families as our Purim Teen Band regales us with great music and original Purim related lyrics set to familiar pop and rock songs. Yours truly has been cast as Haman in the brilliant Purim take on Les Misérables called, “Les Mordechai” written and produced by the talented team of Alan Rosenberg, Emily Elkin and Nicole Muc, and featuring many of your Shir Ami friends. I have heard legendary stories about the adult Purim spiel and can’t wait to experience it myself. And of course, our Purim carnival featuring games, prizes, food, a bounce house and more will be part of the celebrations. Details are on page 6.

We will barely catch our breath before coming together once again for a celebratory weekend, Shir Ami style. Cantor Kohlbrenner and I feel very privileged to be installed together as Shir Ami’s newest clergy. We are looking forward to welcoming family and friends from near and far to participate in the festivities on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. We are grateful to the team managers, Becky Markowitz and Emily Elkin and their captains who are working tirelessly to create an extraordinary weekend for all of us.

In this time of joy, it is vitally important to remember as well those who are less fortunate. That is why throughout Purim we will collect matanot le’evyonim, voluntary donations that we will give to the neediest in our community. Throughout Installation Weekend we will continue collecting food for our food pantry as we continue to shine a light on issues of food insecurity in our community.

I am very happy that it’s Adar. I am grateful for a month filled with many opportunities to celebrate as well as opportunities to give back. I look forward to being together all throughout the month.

Among the many kid-oriented things that Shir ami offers, did you know that we have a basketball team made up of 6th to 8th graders? They play in the Bucks county inter-synagogue league at Abrams Academy on Sunday afternoons throughout the winter. Our team has made it to the championship game for the last few years! Several current members are now in their third (and final) year of playing. The team was previously coached by congregant Ed Hirsh, and this year is coached by congregant Mike Green. Go Shir Ami basketball!

Many of you don’t know that Shir Ami hosts a local food pantry on site. A specific room dedicated to stocking and storing much needed food items for those in need of them is behind Shalom Hall, near our main kitchen. All food collections are carefully monitored by Shir Ami volunteers throughout the year.

This March, we are doubling down on our efforts to address food insecurity in our local community and beyond. Please take some time to collect and bring in food items to Shir Ami during our special Clergy Installation Weekend, March 29, 30 and 31.

A list of requested items can be found a the bottom of PAGE 7. Thank you for your continued support of this important cause.

AIPAC POLICY CONFERENCE

March 24-26, 2019 | Washington, DCYou still have time to register for the AIPAC General Policy Conference in Washington D.C. March 24th to 26th. If you attend, you will hear interesting facts and lectures and presentations about Iran, Saudi Arabia, the rest of Middle East, relations with Russia, China, and Africa. You will also hear advances in Israel’s technological industry, and hear from leading members of congress and heads of state; however, the most important part of the meeting is that you will get to personally meet and lobby your congressional representatives to support Israel. It is not a given that members of the congress will automatically support Israel, and these lobbying efforts help members of congress vote for programs that will help support Israel financially, militarily, culturally, technologically, and diplomatically. You can make a difference. Anyone who would like to attend:

Hooray – the groundhog says spring is on its way! Our Kindergarten children were lucky enough to watch Punxsutawney Phil come out of his hole on the Smart Board.

The weather has been quite frigid. At least it’s warm and toasty in our ELC. Our children have been so busy making snowmen, snowflakes, mittens and so much more. I love the songs they are singing about winter and snow.

The children did such a great job reaching our goal of reading 613 books. We actually read 681 books as a school! The ice cream party was sooo yummy. Thanks to the DiMedio family for donating the delicious toppings! Also, a big thank you to all our Pre-K Mystery Readers!

February was Dental Health Month.

We had a wonderful visit from the hygienists of Newtown Dentistry who taught us the proper way

of brushing and keeping our teeth healthy. We also saw a great puppet show by Tooth Buddy Tales that taught us about good and bad food for our teeth. Our 3’s have been learning all about different Community Helpers. They had a visit from Miss Brittany, a veterinarian with two real animals (Bailey, the dog, and Rose, the cat), as well as a visit from a real police officer.

Our Family Fun Event on February 24 was so much fun! Children and parents enjoyed a “Dr. Seuss-themed” magician and snack. A great time was had by all! If you weren’t able to attend, save the date for our next event on Saturday, May 11.

The winter months haven’t stopped SHAFTY from enjoying all of our planned recreational and social action activities.

Several members of our senior youth group spent MLK weekend on the Main

Line. There, they listened and learned from speakers on various social justice topics, helped at a homeless shelter, sat with residents in a nursing home, cooked (from scratch) 50 quart-size containers of chili for those in need, and on top of all that, devoted more than four hours packaging 14,256 meals for the organization Rise Against Hunger. It was a great weekend of mitzvot!

We’ve also spent a couple months on the “sports” kick – 76ers /Chinese dinner and hanging out at Speed Raceway were among the highlights for Sr. Shafty. Also this winter, our Jr. Shafty teens “escaped the room” and our elementary school kids went bowling and snow tubing. So much great stuff happening in Shafty - and we welcome new faces all the time to our fun activities.

Thank you for your continued support with our recycled shoe collection and participating in our annual pop tab contest. This year’s winner will be posted in the April Shiron. Right now, it’s a close contest for the ice cream party!

This year, Purim falls on Wednesday March 20 (it is always the 14th of Adar on the Jewish calendar). I certainly hope that you will join us for our annual Family Purim Celebration in the Sanctuary. Family members and friends of all ages are welcome, and we look forward to a night of fun, celebration and being happy (more on that later). As in years past, our celebration will include music, a creative retelling and chanting of Megillat Esther, food, and, of course, groggers! ‘Todah Rabbah’ in advance to our amazing teens, adults and Religious School committee who will make everything come together just perfectly on this special night.

As noted, Purim falls in the month of Adar, and it is during this month that we are commanded (yes, commanded) to ‘be happy!’ How do we fulfill this commandment? After all, how can anyone be commanded to feel a certain way?

Our rabbis offer many answers to this question. As they say, two Jews, three opinions. In the Talmud, we learn that a happy person is one ‘who is able to subdue his/her impulse to do evil’ (Avodah Zarah 19a). In Genesis Rabbah we learn a similar idea, namely that a happy person ‘rises above his/her desire to sin and whose desire to sin does not rise above him/her’ (22:6). In a different section of the Talmud, Rabbi Hiyya teaches that if a person ‘fears God’ he/she will be happy. In Pirke Avot, we learn that a happy person is defined as ‘one who is happy with what he/she has’ (4:1). In that same text, Rabbis Meir teaches that a happy person is one who ‘involves himself/herself in Torah’ (Pirke Avot 6:1).

There are literally hundreds of teachings in Judaism on how to be happy, what defines a happy person and why people are happy when they engage in certain actions and/or have a certain mindset!

In my opinion, these teachings teach us a few important things: 1) Judaism is a religion that asks us, commands us, to seek out happiness; 2) Judaism understands that each of us does not find happiness in the same way or by doing the same things; 3) Judaism teaches that there are many paths to happiness.

It is this last point that I wish to remind us of as we head into March. In this month (Adar on the Jewish calendar) we are commanded to be happy. Jewish tradition also commands us to do so in our own way — the way that has greatest meaning to us. You see, each and every one of the texts cited above is considered equal in holiness, so there is no one ‘best’ way to be happy according to Jewish law or teaching.

I hope that during the month of Adar you and your family will embrace this idea. Find what makes each of you happy. Whether it’s watching a movie together on a rainy afternoon, hiking a mountain as the weather turns from cold to the first touch of spring, catching your first baseball game of the season, or making a meal together — do it!

And while we are commanded to ‘be happy’ during this month of Adar, it’s okay to carry this philosophy into the rest of the year as well. Our lives are busy and our time limited. Judaism teaches us something so important this month: take time to do what makes you happy. It is important that every once in a while you march to the beat of your own happy drum.

I look forward to hearing about all the music you and your family make, which includes making music with us on Wednesday, March 20 as we

celebrate Purim together. See you then and throughout this special month!

L’Shalom- Eric

This year, members of the Shir Ami clergy will be teaching a variety of courses that speak to “The Torah of our Lives.” Each has been asked to teach a subject that they find meaningful or relevant in their lives and that they would like to teach. Enjoy the classes scheduled to date, and look to the Shiron and the weekly email blast for additional courses in the year ahead.

CLASSES INCLUDE:

Conversations in Genesis - Sunday Morning, 9:15-10:45amMarch 24

Rabbi Paula Goldberg, Instructor

Where can we find temptation, murder, dysfunctional family relationships, love, hatred, belief and disbelief? You might be thinking of the popular Game of Thrones, but I am thinking of the first book of the Torah, Genesis. In the stories, we know from our childhood, there emerge concepts, actions, and ideas that can speak to us today.

You are invited- whether you know the stories or not, whether you love them, hate them, or dismiss them as just “fairy tales” – to join me in open, non-judgemental Conversations in Genesis. In each session we will read, then explore the many layers of meaning found in the text, each of us adding our own unique perspective._____________________ _______________________________

The Wisdom of Our Mothers A special opportunity for you to share• Monday, March 4 at 9am• Sunday, March 10 at 9:15am (during religious school)• Wednesday, March 13 at 4:45pm (during religious school)

Through the ages, Jewish Women have been the harborers of Jewish culture and tradition, sharing that amazing, universal, yet uniquely Jewish wisdom and outlook on life with their children.

I truly believe that Jewish women possess certain wisdom that has guided our people, brought up our children, sometimes during phenomenally difficult circumstances, and yet helped Jewish people not only to survive the hardships, but also learn from them, and go on and thrive despite them.

We would like to start a project called The Wisdom of Our Mothers. We are looking for your stories and memories. For those amazing, uniquely Jewish, and yet completely universal, lessons/ sayings/ advice that has had the power and wisdom to change your life, to propel you in the new direction, to help you make a difficult decision,

Those words of hope uttered with a cup of tea, and a slice of Bubbie’s cake, followed by a hug that made you feel whole again. We are looking for those words of encouragement and advice that became your motto in life; your “life rules.” The Wisdom of Our Mothers that has made you into who you are today. Those same words of advice, that you tell your children and your children’s children, or maybe a friend who needs a bit of a helping hand.

We would like to start gathering this wisdom - people’s memories, the advice given to them, maybe by a mother, or a Bubbie… a friend, or an aunt! (I know, for me, personally, it would be my great-grandmother and an elderly neighbor I “coincidentally” met while living in New York City as a graduate student.)

Please write, please share! Don’t let that world disappear. We are, in so many ways, where we come from. Our history stands behind us. Don’t let it be forgotten.

Please join me in the Shir Ami conference room by the main entrance of the building on the dates listed above.

– Marsha Neyman

YAHRZEIT LIGHT CEREMONIALThe family gathers at dusk, before the evening meal, on the eve of the anniversary of the death of the departed. The head of the family speaks: At this moment which bears the memory of our beloved (name), let us join hands in a token of God’s grace. A link has been broken in the chain of affection which has long bound us together, yet the blessed bonds of home and love remain. With prayerful heart, we receive this divine gift of life which holds us together in family unison.

Eternal God, we thank You that, in this time of sadness and loss, You have helped to keep us strong. Though the pain of our loss is still present for us, we know that love will always be stronger than death. And so, to You, we lift our hearts, because we know that our loved one continues to be a living presence in our lives. We acknowledge your mercy, O God, who strengthens us with faith and peace. As our loved one lives for us in these words and memories, we kindle this yahrzeit light and sanctify it in the remembrance of the Divine Word: The spirit of humanity is the light of the Lord. (Kindle the Memorial Light.) ZECHER TZADIK LIV-RACHA. May the memory of the righteous be an eternal blessing.

On the anniversaries of remembering, a Jew remembers not only by feeling, but by

doing. Kindling a yahrzeit candle the evening before is one thing we do; the Kaddish

spoken at a gathering of our people is another. All names will be read on the Friday

evening before the yahrzeit. One way to honor your loved one is with a living memorial

such as a contribution to one of our Temple funds in their memory.

INSIDE THIS ISSUE:You’re An Important Part of “Team Shir Ami”As co-captains of the Installation Celebration Team we feel the responsibility and blessing of being part of “team Shir Ami.” Our “team” theme reflects the belief that each individual is important at Shir Ami – and that together we make a great team.

This is also an incredible opportunity for our community to formally celebrate our new clergy team with a formal installation service and a weekend of celebration. We have an amazing planning team and are so grateful to everyone for their hard work, efforts and enthusiasm.

We want each of you to realize that you’re an important part of “team Shir Ami” and we hope that each of you will join us to celebrate as a community. It is every person on the team bringing each of your special qualities that makes Team Shir Ami so special.

Our new clergy team is looking forward to celebrating with you, most especially at our team party on Saturday evening, March 30. There will be dinner, dancing, cocktails and lots of fun. Please join us!

L’Shalom,

Becky Markowitz & Emily ElkinTeam Shir Ami Co-Captains
