2018 HAMILTON COMPETITIONS

Welcome to the 2018 Hamilton Competitions. This syllabus provides an outline of the classes available in a

particular discipline. As well as this discipline, there will be competitions available for other performing arts.

Please check our website or contact a convenor for information about other competitions. You are very welcome

to come to classes in any discipline and watch, listen and enjoy.

In July 2018, our 76th festival will host the following art forms: dance, piano, vocal, speech & drama, strings

& orchestral instruments and special needs. The competitions are held over 10 days at a range of venues in

Hamilton and Cambridge. Performers will come from a range of communities throughout the upper North Island and from diverse ethnic

and cultural backgrounds. They will range in age from little pre-schoolers to adults completing tertiary study

and vying for the big prizes in the Vocal and Piano competitions. The main prize money from the Norah Howell

Awards will be used to fund further study and launch performance careers. You can enjoy the Norah Howell

Awards at the University of Waikato, Gallagher Academy of Performing Arts over the weekend of: 14th & 15th

July 2018. In selected disciplines, young people will compete for the opportunity to represent the Waikato at the National

Young Performer of the Year Awards (PACANZ). These awards will be held from 19th – 21st October in

Palmerston North and will bring together the finest young talents to compete for prize money and the

recognition associated with being the best in their discipline. The 2018 PACANZ disciplines are: Ballet, Tap,

Vocal and Pianoforte for Soloists and the Troupe/Group Dance Award

Another special part of the competitions is the morning event, held just before the end of Term 2 for Children

& Young Adults with Special Needs. This is a delightful event and we would love you to come and enjoy their

special time on Thursday, 5th July at The Link, St Andrew’s Church, River Road, Hamilton.

Your involvement and support of the Hamilton Competitions is a key to our success. Please come along, bring

your friends and family. We trust you will enjoy the experience and provide gracious support for those

participating. Standing up to perform is a challenge, and everyone who has the courage to do so is entitled to

our respect and applause. If you have the opportunity to thank the Convenors and their helpers, please do. They are all volunteers and

perform a great role organising and running the events for you. Best wishes to all competitors. John Drummond President PS – If you are interested in helping either beforehand or on the day, please contact any of our committee

members to offer your assistance. Thank you.

Introduction to the Performing Arts Competitions Association of New Zealand Inc.

Since 1966 the Performing Arts Competitions Association of New Zealand Inc. (PACANZ) has acted as the national body for New Zealand’s Performing Arts Competition Societies.

The PACANZ objectives are:

• To be the representative national organisation for performing arts competition societies in New Zealand

• To encourage, foster and promote the practice and appreciation of the performing arts in New Zealand

Our 52 Member Societies operate competition festivals throughout New Zealand, with children and young people participating in one or sometimes several of the art forms offered (Ballet, Modern Dance, Tap Dancing, Highland Dance, Speech and Drama, Pianoforte, Orchestral Instrument, and Singing).

In 1977 PACANZ initiated the National Young Performer Awards. This multi-discipline award, represents 8 of the art forms traditionally covered in the competitions movement, and is the pinnacle of achievement for many of our competitors giving them a unique opportunity to perform at national level.

Since the inaugural Awards in 1977, more than 100 Awards have been decided at competitions that have hosted hundreds of aspiring performing artists. Through Prize monies and Tuition grants, more than $300,000 has been invested back into the performing arts movement.

Pacanz is a Registered Charity CC 20183

The 2018 National Young Performer Awards will be held in Palmerston North, at the Regent on Broadway Theatre, the Speirs Centre and the Globe Theatre, hosted in conjunction with the Palmerston North Dance Assn and the Manawatu Performing Arts Competitions Society, on the weekend 19-21 October 2018.

SOCIETY NOMINATION Each Society, which is a financial member of PACANZ, may nominate ONE Troupe/Group**, who shall be selected by the adjudicator, based on a performance at the Member Society Competition. The adjudicator will determine that the Troupe/Group has displayed a sufficient standard of performance to competently represent that society at the National Troupe/Group Finals. The standard required will be at the absolute discretion of the adjudicator but will include: • A demonstration of adequate preparation • An authority of performance • A performance with a level of expertise commensurate with a national final competition. If the adjudicator considers that sufficient standard has NOT been reached by any Troupe/Group, then NO nomination will be made. The nominated Troupe/Group is responsible for paying the entry fee to the National Young Performer Awards, which is $250.00 incl gst. * A professional is someone whose primary employment is being paid to perform or work in the performing arts. For the present purposes, being a student constitutes “primary employment” and therefore is not seen as a Professional. For the Student who receives payment for participation, either teaching or performing, this should not impose professional status on a person if it is by way only of an occasional bonus or benefit rather than their principal means of earning a livelihood. The exception to this is a participating teacher who may perform. ** As some Societies split their dance genres and run large Competitions with different Judges and/or at different times of the year, they will be able to nominate more than one group to represent their Society. ** If a Society has 30 or more entries in the Troupe/Group Nomination section, then they are entitled to offer a second Nomination.

Vocal and Piano Awards

Each year the Hamilton Competitions Society receives a significant sum of money from the Norah

Howell Trust. This money is used for the Norah Howell Awards which are granted to outstanding

performances in special classes in the Vocal and Piano competitions.

Norah Howell was born in Hamilton in 1906 and died in 1989. She had a lifelong interest in music

and gardening and a strong social conscience. Norah grew up in the Waikato and Auckland and

attended the Sydney Conservatorium where she studied violin and piano.

Norah’s husband, Cedric, was killed during WWII and Norah then used her musical gifts to support

herself and her two sons. She performed as a soloist and employed her superb accompanying skills

to support vocalists and instrumentalists.

In her later years she established the Norah Howell Trust which has provided financial support to a

number of tertiary students at different Universities and to the Hamilton Competitions Society. We

greatly appreciate the trustees’ on-going support of our young performers. Thank you, Norah

Howell.

The 2018 Norah Howell Piano and Vocal Awards will be held in the Concert Chamber of the

Gallagher Academy of Performing Arts, University of Waikato on the evenings of Saturday, 14th July

[Piano] and Sunday, 15th July [Vocal]. We encourage you to support these outstanding young people

in fine evenings of concert.
