A consent number is required for enrollment and may be obtained from the Band Office in person, over the phone (573-882-3438), or by emailing [email protected]. Consent numbers are available all summer and for all new members they were either emailed to you prior to your Summer Welcome orientation date or given to you at the completion of your successful audition into Marching Mizzou. If you misplaced your permission number simply contact us and we will assist you. Per the University of Missouri and School of Music policy, all Marching Mizzou members must provide proof of insurance; otherwise, you will not be allowed to participate in any Marching Mizzou activity. Please provide the requested information on the Marching Mizzou Registration Google Form as we will keep it on file in the Band Office in the event you require medical attention. If you do not have health insurance, student insurance is available through the Student Health Center. Log on to http://www.studenthealth.missouri.edu or call 573-882-7481 for more information. For all members of Marching Mizzou - If you choose to enroll for credit, you will receive a $250 scholarship that is intended to help offset the cost of the one-hour course credit. If you are enrolled in two music ensembles in a semester, you will receive a total scholarship of $500. If you are enrolled in three music ensembles in a semester, you will receive a total scholarship of $650. It is important to note that if you enroll for zero-credit, then you will NOT receive a scholarship. It is strongly encouraged that out-of-state members enroll in the zero-credit option, as the out-of-state credit hour cost is considerably higher than $250. In addition to these scholarship opportunities at the end of this newsletter are applications for the Joan Dalzell Savage Memorial Scholarship and the Don Flora Scholarship. Other merit-based scholarships are available and will be awarded at the close of the season and in the spring semester.

Students not enrolled in Marching Mizzou will not be allowed to participate in any Marching Mizzou related activity so please take care of your enrollment as soon as possible. Fall semester rehearsals take place every Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday from 4:15 – 6:00PM. (Drumline 4:00 – 6:00PM.). Additionally, every section of the band may have 1-2 required sectionals each week from 3:30 – 4:00PM, or as otherwise arranged, as determined by the section leaders. Each section will determine its own sectional day(s). Finally, the posting of all music, important documents, announcements, and grades will all be done on Canvas this year, so you must enroll PRIOR to the start of band camp to be able to access these materials. Band Camp Arrival & Schedule A tentative 2018 Band Camp schedule is located starting on page 5 of this newsletter, but note the following assigned dates of arrival for the start of Band Camp. *Friday, August 10—Marching Mizzou Leadership Team Sunday, August 12—Drumline, Color Guard, Feature Twirlers, and New Members Monday, August 13—Returning Members *You will need to arrange your own housing on Friday and Saturday as the residence halls do not open until Sunday, August 12. Band Camp is REQUIRED for participation in Marching Mizzou so please read the Band Camp schedule carefully and prepare yourself accordingly for all scheduled events that week. Please notify Dr. Knopps at [email protected] if you are marching with a Drum Corps this summer so we can note that and plan for your late arrival once finals conclude in Indianapolis, Indiana. All drum corps members are expected to be in attendance as soon as possible following the completion of DCI Finals on Saturday, August 11. If you are participating in Sorority Rush, which runs concurrently with our Band Camp, be aware there is an alternative rush schedule for Marching Mizzou members. The Band Office and the Office of Greek Life jointly prepared this special schedule to maximize your participation in both events in the week prior to the start of classes. Please indicate on your Marching Mizzou Registration Google Form if you are participating in Sorority Rush. If you have any questions regarding the schedule do not hesitate to contact the Band Office at (573) 882-3438 or via email at [email protected]. Finally, prepare yourself for another hot and humid mid-Missouri summer. If you have been working indoors all summer, you need to begin acclimating yourself to the Missouri heat and humidity so please begin to spend some time outdoors in the weeks leading up to Band Camp. To ensure your comfort during Band Camp BRING THE FOLLOWING ITEMS: sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher), hat/visor, sunglasses, water bottle, loose comfortable clothing, athletic shoes, etc. Midriffs or sports bras without a tank top overlay are not allowed during rehearsal. Athletic shoes or jazz shoes are our required footwear during all outdoor rehearsals. Band Camp Schedule The following is our anticipated Band Camp schedule. Monday, August 20 Classes begin Tuesday, August 21 Regular class rehearsals from 4:15PM-6:00PM begin and run Tuesday-Friday each week. Approved Rush Schedule The following schedule is the approved rush schedule for all women in Marching Mizzou who are participants of Sorority Rush or are returning members of a sorority. This represents what we believe to be a very generous compromise that should allow women to participate in both activities. Keep in mind that Marching Mizzou is an academic class that requires certain considerations over non-academic activities; however, we feel involvement in Greek Life is important and adds to the overall college experience. It must be understood from the outset that anyone following this schedule may be assigned as an alternate until such time when a spot becomes available or the person earns back their spot in the Pre-Game block. This decision has been made, not to penalize anyone for being an active and contributing member of campus life, but rather to ensure the integrity of the discipline required for Marching Mizzou to reach the highest standards of performance. Residence Hall Move-In Process If you have signed a residence hall contract for the fall, you need to provide the requested information on the Marching Mizzou Registration Google Form so the Band Office can communicate to the Residence Hall Staff that you will be moving into your residence early because of your required attendance at Band Camp. Note that University Bands will pay the $18.25 charge per night for your room until the residence halls officially open for the fall. All New Members, Drumline, Color Guard, and Feature Twirlers members may begin the residence hall check in process beginning at 9:00AM on Sunday, August 12. New this year is a centralized location for this process. Please proceed to the Hearnes Center Fieldhouse, located at 600 E. Stadium Blvd, to check-in and obtain your residence hall key. From there you will proceed to your assigned residence hall to complete your move-in process. Your first rehearsal begins at 1:30PM at Loeb Hall. As we receive further details regarding this process we will update this newsletter online as well as email those students registered for the course. All Returning Members may begin the residence hall check in process beginning at 9:00AM on Monday, August 13. For returning members, your check-in process will NOT be centralized as previously described with our New Members, Drumline, Color Guard, and Feature Twirlers. You may proceed directly to your assigned residence hall for your check-in and move-in process. Note your Marching Mizzou Registration and Instrument Check Out begins in Jesse Hall at 1PM prior to the first General Meeting for all members at 2PM. Again, as we receive further details regarding this process we will update this newsletter online as well as email those students registered for the course. As a reminder, if you do not complete your Marching Mizzou Registration Google Form we CANNOT reserve and pay for your residence hall room and YOU will incur the total cost of your room during Band Camp. Your Marching Mizzou Registration Google Form must be submitted NO LATER than Friday, July 13 with this information. New Members & University-Owned Instruments New Members will report to Jesse Auditorium at 7:00PM on Sunday, August 12 for your New Member Marching Mizzou Registration and Instrument Check-Out as well as an introductory meeting where you will be formally introduced to Associate Director of Bands and Director of Athletic Bands, Dr. Amy M. Knopps, Assistant Director of Athletic Bands, Dr. Pete Zambito, our Graduate Students, and the Marching Mizzou Leadership Team. Prior to the General Meeting for all New Members, Dr. Knopps and Dr. Zambito will host an optional Band Family Meeting at 6:00PM in Jesse Auditorium. Note this is optional for you and your Band Family, but highly encouraged for you and your band families to attend so they can receive information about Band Camp, the upcoming season, and have the opportunity to ask any questions about your participation in Marching Mizzou this fall. The purpose of the General Meeting for New Members is to welcome you to campus and Marching Mizzou, go over information regarding Band Camp and the upcoming season, and to explain what is expected of you as a member of Marching Mizzou. No instruments or equipment are needed at this meeting; however, those students using university-owned instruments or equipment will pick up their instruments at this meeting. To reserve an instrument please indicate what you need on the Marching Mizzou Registration Google Form. Every instrumentalist of Marching Mizzou will be provided with a university-owned instrument, flip folder, lyre (as needed), and two pairs of white practice gloves that woodwind and brass members are required to wear at all rehearsals. After exhausting your two provided pairs, students must purchase replacement white gloves on their own from the Band Office or at the Practice Field from one of our Graduate Students for $3.00. In addition, Marching Mizzou does NOT furnish nor sell reeds, valve oil, or grease, so please come prepared with those items as needed for your instrument.

10

Part Assignment Auditions Part assignment auditions will take place on Monday, August 13. You will be asked to play “Every True Son” and “Fight Tiger” from memory. You have the option of playing 1st, 2nd, or 3rd part, as applicable, for your audition. Our Traditional Music, that includes these selections, can be found online at the following link:

https://music.missouri.edu/ensemble/marching-mizzou-sheet-music Please come to camp ready to audition with your music memorized. We also encourage you to work ahead and completely memorize ALL of our Traditional Music as it will make for a much easier transition as we begin to learn our Pre-Game Show at Band Camp. With your Marching Mizzou Traditional Music under your fingers, you can then put your attention on our first halftime show music, which must also be memorized in preparation for the first game on Saturday, September 1, and our stands tunes, which do not require memorization. Returning Members, you are welcome to audition on the part you played last year, but note you may be moved to a different part to appropriately balance the section. If you have any questions regarding these auditions, please call the Band Office at (573) 882-3438 or via email at [email protected] or contact your section leader. Best of luck! Marching Mizzou Cost Coverage & Flip Folders Marching Mizzou covers the cost of your instruments/equipment, two pairs of practice gloves, one pair of black performance gloves, flip folder, lyre, music, access to drill charts, game day meals, uniform cleaning costs, official travel, and our annual end of season Band Banquet. All members, however, must purchase their own marching shoes ($35.00) (Winds and Drumline; Color Guard and Feature Twirler priced separately) and any replacement clothing and equipment items that may be needed. Students are, however, financially responsible for any damage or lost instruments, uniforms, and/or equipment. Marching Mizzou uses flip folders in rehearsal and in the stands at games for music. All wind players will be issued a flip folder at the beginning of Band Camp. It is expected that each player maintains an organized folder all season to help keep the music in good shape so that playing music in our rehearsals and in the stands, is more efficient. Marching Mizzou Shirts, Ball Caps, Sunglasses, and Water Bottles All NEW Marching Mizzou members will receive a Marching Mizzou polo, dry fit t-shirt (to wear underneath the uniform), ball cap, sunglasses, and water bottles at NO CHARGE. These items are yours to keep for the duration of your time in Marching Mizzou. Returning Members will receive a Marching Mizzou polo and ball cap at NO CHARGE as we are updating the designs of these items and both will be new to you. The Marching Mizzou dry-fit t-shirt, sunglasses, and water bottle designs have remained the same, therefore, you will not receive these new items. You may, however, purchase these items if any of yours need to be replaced. Polo shirts are available in both feminine and masculine cuts. Please indicate your needs on the Marching Mizzou Registration Google Form and forward payment for these items to the Band Office. Ball caps will be used in the stands during games and used as an official uniform piece, therefore, all ball caps must be treated as part of your uniform and with you during all performances. In the event of cold weather an official Marching Mizzou winter hat will be issued and utilized in the stands as an official uniform piece. For Color Guard and Feature Twirlers you will be issued a headband. It is required that all members (except Color Guard and Feature Twirlers) wear their Marching Mizzou official dry fit t-shirt under their uniform at every performance in order to present a uniform appearance when uniform coats are removed.

11

Currently our “Casual Uniform” for Marching Mizzou consists of the Marching Mizzou polo, ball cap, a pair of LONG khaki colored shorts, or a pair of khaki colored pants (shorts or pants will be determined by the Directors prior to the performance, but note you must purchase BOTH on your own), and athletic shoes. As discussed, this is to create a sharp, uniform look across the ensemble during performances, travel, etc. Our first performance in this uniform will be on Sunday, August 19, at our annual “Concert on the Quad.” Alternatively, throughout the rest of the season in the event of extreme temperatures for the comfort and safety of our students we utilize this uniform as an alternative to the formal Marching Mizzou uniform. Uniform Fitting, Check Out, and Shoes Uniform fitting and checkout will take place during Band Camp by our Tau Beta Sigma Uniform Chairs and a specific schedule for this process will be discussed at the beginning of Band Camp. In addition to your assigned uniform all woodwind and brass players must wear black gloves (clarinets may cut out the fingertips as needed). Note that you will not be issued your uniform until all fees have been paid. In preparation for new uniforms this fall we are moving away from the previously utilized “Dinkle” formal patent leather style band shoe to the black “Super Drillmasters” in order to match our new uniforms and provide extended comfort to our members. In order to match the clean and sharp appearance of our uniforms, both old and new, and for uniformity across the ensemble, all wind and drumline members of Marching Mizzou must wear these new shoes. The $35.00 price has been made available exclusively to Marching Mizzou through Stanbury Uniforms (the manufacturer of our uniforms). Sizing for these shoes will take place alongside uniform checkout during Band Camp. Note that all wind and drumline members must wear long black athletic socks (absolutely NO ankle socks) with their band shoes. Seniors in your last year of Marching Mizzou, because you will only utilize this shoe for one season, Marching Mizzou will cover this cost of your marching shoes. All other students must purchase on their own. Mini Mizzou Mini Mizzou represents the absolute best from Marching Mizzou. It is the athletic pep band that performs at selected away football games, all home men’s and women’s basketball games as well as all home volleyball matches, in addition to post season travel at the SEC and NCAA levels for all three teams, and various other athletic and campus events as requested and approved by Dr. Amy M. Knopps, Associate Director of Bands and Director of Athletic Bands. All travel is paid for by the University of Missouri or NCAA. In the fall, Mini Mizzou is split evenly to form the Mini Mizzou Black Band and the Mini Mizzou Gold Band that rotates performance responsibilities throughout the fall semester and over breaks until the start of the spring semester.
