2018 It seems that the holidays are here, if you plan to be gone for any length of time, please let the office know, and leave your number with us. We also like to keep an eye on your home. For our new neighbors, we do not allow trick or treat in the community….but our little 4 legged children do have a little parade down yardarm, and treats are really welcome, they do dress up for us. You bring a chair and set, and they come to you, with tails wagging. If you go out of the community please watch for children, they are out and about. Community survey will come out soon and we ask all of you to please fill it out and send in…it is the only way that we know what peeks your interest, good or bad. Some of you feel, you don’t have any complaints so you don’t fill it out. Please let us know what does make you content and happy. The Steiner offices like to hear the good along with the bad. The offices DO NOT get names, unless you feel you’d like your name on it. Remember the survey company put all names they receive, in a hat and they draw out the winner. Winward lakes activities would like you to join them, anytime you can. There are several activities, and would love some ideas for more. Remember the monthly dinners, grow larger every month, and all have a great time. Remember the sea wall program, for those of you around the lakes. Halloween is the season for little ghosts and goblins to take to the

streets, asking for candy and scaring one another silly. Spooky stories are told around fires, scary movies appear in theaters and pumpkins are expertly (and not-so-expertly) carved into jack-o'-

lanterns. Amid the silly and scary antics, Halloween is much more than just costumes and candy; in fact, the holiday has a rich and interesting history. Halloween, also known as All Hallows' Eve, can be traced back about 2,000 years to a pre-Christian Celtic festival held around Nov. 1 called Samhain, which means "summer's end", a time to gather resources for the winter months and bring animals back from the pastures. The tradition of dressing in costumes and trick-or-treating may go back to the practice of "mumming" and "guising," in which people would disguise themselves and go door-to-door, asking for food. Early costumes were usually disguises, often woven out of straw, and sometimes people wore costumes to perform in plays or skits. Halloween provides a safe way to play with the concept of death. People dress up as the living dead, and fake gravestones adorn front lawns — activities that wouldn't be tolerated at other times of the year.

OCTOBER 27, 2018

Guavaween is an annual Latin-flavored Halloween celebration which takes place on the last Saturday of October in the historic neighborhood of Ybor City on Tampa, Florida. It is named after Tampa's nickname, "The Big Guava". Since its inception more than 20 years ago, Guavaween has become one of the largest festivals in Ybor. The daylight hours are family-oriented and in the past have included such activities as a costume contest, scavenger hunt, safe trick-or-treat at Centro Ybor, food and amusement rides. Around dusk the Mama Guava Stumble Parade, Guavaween's most popular attraction, makes its way down Seventh Avenue, the main street in Ybor. The parade, led by Mama Guava, features floats and costumed individuals who throw candy and beads to the spectators.

COLUMBUS DAY 2018

Columbus Day 2018 occurs on the second Monday in October. What exactly do we celebrate on Columbus Day? Here’s a brief history of the holiday. In Christopher Columbus’s day, scholars knew that the world was round; the fact dated from the ancient Greeks. People assumed that a ship traveling west from Europe would sail clear through to Asia. However, many believed that such a westward journey was impossible. On October 12, 1492, Columbus landed on a small island in the Bahamas, convinced that he had reached his destination of Asia. his journey sparked enthusiasm for European exploration of the hemisphere. The first celebration of Columbus’s landing in the New World took place in 1792. In 1937, the occasion was declared a national holiday by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Columbus Day has been observed on the second Monday of October since 1971. The observance of Columbus Day is not without controversy. European exploration brought disease and devastation to the lives of the indigenous people of the Americas. Some areas of the United States choose to honor Native American culture on this day instead. Since 1992, this state and city holiday has been referred to as Indigenous Peoples’ Day. __________________________________________________________

Fun Facts about the Month of October

• The name of the month of October comes from the Latin “octō”, meaning “eight”, because in the Roman calendar October was the eight month of the year. With the adding of January and February at the beginning of the calendar after the Julian calendar reform, October became the tenth month of the year, as we know it today.

• The Anglo-Saxons called October “Wintirfyllith”, meaning “fullness of winter” because it had the first full moon of the winter season.

• Another fun fact about October is that, according to folklore, if the deer have a gray coat in this month you should expect a hard winter.

• The holiday of Halloween, celebrated in October, comes from “All Hallows’ Eve” or the night before “All Hallows” day (“All Saints” day) as in old English “hallow” means “to sanctify”.

• The zodiac signs for October are Libra (September 23 – October 22) and Scorpio (October 23 – November 21).
