A N E N T R E P R E N E U R I A L M O N A R C H Ju l iane Mar ie was the w idow of K ing Freder ik V and

c ame to power in Denmark and Nor way when her

la te husband ’s son f rom h i s f i r s t mar r iage bec ame

menta l l y i l l and was unable to govern. Ju l iane

Mar ie was a s t rong woman w i th a good grasp of the

need s of the t ime. V ia her European contac t s , she

had under s tood that a combinat ion of k nowledge

and the use of loc a l raw mater ia l s would improve

loc a l l i v ing condi t ions . L ike many other European

monarchs , she suppor ted research in natura l

sc ience. I t was no longer theolog y but sc ience that

would improve l i fe on ear th, hence her in teres t

in minera log y and the raw mater ia l s fo r porce la in

produc t ion.

unk nown to Ju l iane Mar ie. Her brother, Char les

I o f Brunswick- Wol fenbüt te l had a l so founded

a porce la in fac tor y in Für s tenberg, Germany. In

add i t ion, the i r s i s te r was mar r ied to Freder ik I I

o f Prus s ia , one of Europe’s abso lu te monarchs

who in 1763 founded a porce la in fac tor y in Ber l in .

A l though the s ib l ing s cor responded, the sec ret fo r

porce la in manufac tur ing was not shared bet ween

them and i t was on ly in 1774 that porce la in was

f i r s t p roduced in Copenhagen. F ina l l y, Ju l iane

Mar ie and the Danish roya l f ami l y had the i r own

va luable porce la in produc t ion, l i ke other European

monarch ies .

T H E R O Y A L C R O W N A N D T H E T H R E E W A V E S Ju l iane Mar ie was adamant f rom the s ta r t that each

p iece of Roya l Copenhagen porce la in would be

s tamped wi th i t s un ique fac tor y mark : the three

hand - painted waves that symbol i se Denmark ’s

water ways , the ‘Oresund ’ or Sound, the Great

Be l t and the L i t t le Be l t . The queen a l so in t roduced

the roya l c rown s tamp to h igh l ight the fac tor y ’s

roya l as soc ia t ion. The c rown has changed over

t ime and c an be used to date each p iece of Roya l

Copenhagen. On the Roya l Copenhagen webs i te,

there i s a l i s t of the c rowns and the cor responding

t ime per iod s .

The very f irst Flower Tale, Blue Fluted Plain, marks the beg inning of the centuries-old

Royal Copenhagen story. Inspired by Chinese porcelain art of the t ime, the f loral pattern was

pared-down and refined into a more European interpretation to become the signature pattern,

sometimes called “Musselmalet” or mussel painted. A closer look reveals the stylised rose,

centered in the middle, the long branches with leaves, the chrysanthemums, nut f lowers

and grass shooting up. Creating this g raceful and timeless decoration requires immense

discipline; every element is precisely painted but the painter also exercises their own artist ic

interpretation in the t iny details . These rare decorative skil ls emphasise

the delicate shape and craftsmanship of every piece

Developed by young design student Karen Kjædgård-Larsen in 2000, the

introduction of Blue Fluted Mega signalled the beg inning of a new adventure for the classic

Royal Copenhagen chrysanthemum flower from the orig inal Pattern No.1. Sti l l

carefully hand-painted, selected f loral details from the pattern are provocatively enlarged,

taking up more space on the white porcelain. A modern classic , the decoration may appear

to be simple, but i ts s implicity requires absolute precision in the execution of every painted

detail . This reinterpretation was and sti l l is both comfortingly familiar in i ts nod to the past

and surprisingly refreshing in i ts innovative thinking. A new flower tale was told and has

become part of Royal Copenhagen’s history.
