The Annual Report for 2018 is provided to the community of Hoxton Park High as an account of the school's operationsand achievements throughout the year.

It provides a detailed account of the progress the school has made to provide high quality educational opportunities forall students, as set out in the school plan. It outlines the findings from self–assessment that reflect the impact of keyschool strategies for improved learning and the benefit to all students from the expenditure of resources, including equityfunding.

School background

School vision statement

Our vision is to build the school community as a learning organisation in which on–going teacher learning iscomplimentary to student learning. Where students, through modelling, develop a love of learning and the independenceand strength to achieve their dreams and realise their personal best.

School context

Hoxton Park High School is a comprehensive, co–educational high school that welcomes and accommodates studentsfrom different backgrounds and with different learning needs.

The school has adopted the four core values of care, respect, participation and excellence. The school population isdiverse, with more than 85% of students coming from non–English speaking backgrounds. There are more than 10different cultures represented in the school population. The school is proud of its strong multicultural tradition and thevalues students learn about tolerance of diversity and inclusivity.

The curriculum caters for all students through a broad range of subjects including academic courses, vocationaleducation (VET) in Hospitality, Retail, Information Technology, Primary Industries and Metal and Engineering, schoolbased apprenticeships and traineeships (SBAT) and TAFE courses. Gifted and talented students are catered for withinthe Self Select class program and the provision of a differentiated curriculum, catering for all learners.

The school is part of the Australian Business and Community Network (ABCN) with strong links with AMEX andUniversity of Western Sydney as business partners. The school has a comprehensive student leadership and welfareprogram which includes strong links with partner primary schools. The school is part of the Positive Behaviour forSuccess (PBL) program and the Australian Government Quality Teaching Program (AGQTP). Students excelacademically, in the arts, citizenship and sporting arenas.

Hoxton Park High School is an outstanding school with a fabulous reputation. We have great programs, teachers,students and families, all of which contribute to making Hoxton Park High School a quality school.

Self-assessment using the School Excellence Framework

This section of the Annual Report outlines the findings from self–assessment using the School Excellence Framework,school achievements and the next steps to be pursued.

This year, our school undertook self–assessment using the School Excellence Framework. The framework supportspublic schools throughout NSW in the pursuit of excellence by providing a clear description of high–quality practiceacross the three domains of Learning, Teaching and Leading.

The results of this process indicated in the domain of Learning, the school is operating at the Sustaining and Growingstage in the elements of Learning Culture, Wellbeing, Curriculum, Assessment, Reporting and Student PerformanceMeasures. Our school culture is focused on continuous improvement through high expectations and a school–wideunderstanding of the links between student wellbeing and engagement.

In the domain of Teaching, the school is operating at the Sustaining and Growing stage in the elements of EffectiveClassroom Practice, Professional Standards and Learning and Development. A range of evidence–based practices andexplicit teaching techniques supports the school–wide approach to improving teacher practice. The school will continueto focus on developing staff in analysing Data Skills and its effective use to inform teaching and learning.

In the domain of Leading, the school is operating at the Sustaining and Growing stage in the elements of EducationalLeadership, School Planning, Implementation and Reporting and Management Practices and Processes. Our executiveand teacher leadership program formed the basis of the Action Learning projects and evaluation of our policies,procedures and school systems to improve teaching and school practices. The school will continue to focus on the use oftechnology and school resources across key learning areas to support student learning and engagement and teacherprofessional learning.

Our self–assessment process will assist the school to refine our school plan, leading to further improvements in thedelivery of education to our students.

Strategic Direction 1

HIGH EXPECTATIONS FOR LEADERS

Purpose

Leaders who are strong, strategic, effective and committed to fostering a school–wide culture of high expectations and ashared sense of responsibility for student engagement, learning, development and success.

Overall summary of progress

Our executive team have successfully initiated the first phase of their Action Learning Projects (ALPs), utilisingevidence–based practices to improve student learning outcomes and engagement. The first year of the ALPs focused ontrialling processes and practices to develop a series to teaching strategies and focuses to be implemented in 2019across targeted year groups. This was underpinned by the leadership training the executive team undertook in 2017, withthe skills developed through the training utilised to lead the implementation of the ALPs within their faculty's and teams.

The executive team also finalised and implemented the Executive Code, utilising the communication and meetingprotocols in their interactions with one another and during the executive meetings throughout the year.

The Executive team collaboratively developed thepolicies for the relaunch of PBL, focusing on thedevelopment of a common language forexpectations across the school, to be implementedin 2019.

Executives leading and staffconfident in high level school /faculty administrative processesto support school compliance. 

$5000 was provided to allKLAs to support theimplementation ofcompliance processeswithin their faculties.

Executives evaluated the compliance processeswithin their faculty, through a mock audit in term 3.From this, they have identified areas forimprovement and have developed a plan toaddress these for 2019.

Next Steps

The process used to develop the Executive Code will be utilised to establish a school wide Staff Code, aimed at buildinga shared vision and culture across the school.

The ALPs will enter their second year, with a focus on the collection of evidence to evaluate the impact the projects arehaving on student learning and achievement, over a 12 month period.

Purpose

Teachers with high levels of professionalism and commitment who work individually and collaboratively in evaluating theeffectiveness of their teaching practices to create a high performing , dynamic, evidence based learning environment.

Overall summary of progress

Staff have engaged in the development and implementation of the ALPs throughout 2018. This has included collectingand evaluating student data, developing programs and resources and undertaking professional learning with their facultyduring School Development Days and Twilight sessions, to further research and develop strategies and processes torefine and enhance their faculty ALPs.

Staff consolidate literacy andnumeracy platform around criticaland creative intelligences forStage 4 students.

Both Numeracy and Literacy Projects havedemonstrated an increase in student abilities overtime. This data is being used to refine theprocesses for next year – including thedevelopment of extension booklets for theacademically stronger students and modelledresponses to help reinforce ideas when they arerevisited throughout the year.

Staff usage of evidence basedpractices will see an increase instudents achieving the top 2bands in Literacy and Numeracyin NAPLAN.

The implementation of the Hoxton Hub in Stage 4and 5, Literacy and Numeracy classes in Stage 4and the implementation of ALPs across the schoolhas led to a strong growth in student scores fromyear 7 to year 9 NAPLAN results for 2018. This isindicated through a value added score of 47.73,which is 7 points above the average state growth.

Next Steps

For 2019, staff will continue to work in KLA and and whole school teams to ensure their classrooms are dynamic learningenvironments. They will also contribute to the development of a whole school set of expectations for professionalism andcommitment to education, through the development of the Staff Code.

HIGH EXPECTATIONS FOR STUDENTS

Purpose

Students who are high performing, independent and reflective learners who successfully transition to future learning andemployment, with the skills to make informed contributions as citizens and leaders.

Overall summary of progress

Students were given a variety of opportunities aimed at enhancing their understanding of and ability to develop,leadership and workplace skills. Students worked with external agencies, such as 'Salesforce' and "$20 Boss" todevelop business pitches, marketing strategies and higher order leadership skills. Partnerships with universities such asWestern Sydney University continued to provide mentoring opportunities to students, while new partnerships, such asUTS' "Engineers without Boarders" gave our students opportunities to enhance their critical and creative thinking andproblem solving skills through STEM activities. Students also undertook new leadership pathways within the school,undertaking a refined application and interview process for positions within the student leadership team.

Higher student participation inwhole school initiatives andunderstanding to the skillsneeded to transition from schoolto work.

Feedback from the enterprise projects trialled thisyear indicate that the $20 Boss project hasdelivered positive results for the students, so will becontinued in 2019, along with 'GenerationEntrepreneur'. Both projects are to be expanded toallow for more students in stage 5 to participate inthe initiatives.

The Leadership booklets and Prefect Package alsoyielded positive results and will be againimplemented in 2019.

Student self–efficacy will improvemotivation, learning andachievement which is crucial tostudent success.

Evaluation of the STEM data collected over theyear indicates that students are now achieving at orabove their particular stage level for the outcomesassessed on the Critical and Creative skillscontinuum. These outcomes specifically trackedstudent's ability to self monitor, reflect on learning,work in teams and strategically plan for theirlearning.

The STEM team is growing for 2019 to now include2 new staff members, allowing for greateropportunities to embed STEM principles into otherKLAs across the school.

Increased usage of PBL, combined with andincrease of intervention programs and activities sawgreater student engagement across the board.

Next Steps

The programs trialled in 2018 will continue in 2019, with the focus now on making these leadership and enterpriseopportunities a part of the whole school system for all students. 2019 will also see a relaunch of the PBL framework, witha focus on all students utilising the values and ethics of the Hoxton Honour Code as the basis to good citizenship.

Key Initiatives Resources (annual) Impact achieved this year

Aboriginal background loading $31,451 Through our partnership with Pathways toDreaming, students participated in manycultural enriching workshops and learnt aboutlanguage, medicinal purposes of the land,dance, jewellery making and the art ofboomerang throwing. Mentors also visited theschool on a monthly basis and two majorprojects were completed throughout the year,a personalised HPHS NRL ball and anexcursion to a significant Aboriginal landmarkin the Blue Mountains.

Our partnership with AIME allowed studentsthe opportunity to experience theatricaleducation. Through this they exploredfilmmaking and photography, goal setting,coping strategies such as assertiveness,resilience and maintaining a positive focus.This partnership contributed towards thestudents at HPHS accepting their own identityas well as identifying with other students andcommunity members both within the schooland the wider community. The fortnightlyvisits from our tutor squad aimed at increasedclass engagement and assessmentcompletion of our stage 4 students. Two tothree mentors assisted students with theirassessments and guided them with onlinemathematics programs to increase theirNumeracy skills.

NRL School to Work mentors worked closelywith our stage 6 students preparing them fortheir transition to post–school pathways. Thehighlight being their attendance to the YouthLeadership Summit which occurs in year 11and sets their mindset and determination

Working with the year 6 transition officer wasa great experience and ensured that bothstudents and parents were familiar with theAboriginal coordinator within the school. TheKari transition backpacks ensured thatfamilies felt welcomed and supported.

English language proficiency $31,451 • All Stage 4 students completed the LexileLit–Pro test each term to identify their growthin reading comprehension skills andachievement of the grade benchmark. • NAPLAN analysis and lexile scores wereused to create student target goals to monitorstudents' achievement of grade benchmarksfor Year 7 and 8. • Teaching strategies, lesson plans andresources were evaluated and amendedthrough the ongoing fortnightly HH facultymeetings. • Successful development of teachingprogram and lesson resources for Stage 4and 5 – Writing, which was informed by thefindings from the RAP Data and Facultyanalyses. • Learning and Support staff were allocatedas specific stage coordinators for thecontinuous evaluation and development of

English language proficiency $31,451 the teaching programs and resources for2019. • Modes of support for 2019 for all KLAs toinclude the explicit implementation of the HHreading and writing strategies through ateam–teaching capacity.

Low level adjustment for disability $167,870.01 • Funding was utilised to provide in–classsupport and withdrawal support programs foridentified students needing additional support.Support was regularly evaluated and adjustedthrough the PLASP meetings with parentsand students.

Socio–economic background $381,220 • Funding was utilised to establish 4additional Head Teacher positions which haveprovided extra support to whole schoolprojects including finance, professionallearning and Student Wellbeing. As a result ofthis, new student leadership processes havebeen implemented, all faculties haveundertaken projects to enhance studentlearning and engagement and the PBLframework has been relaunched. Communityengagement projects have also led to studentenrolments in year 7 reaching a 6 year highfor 2019. • Continued participation in the Star Hubnetwork has provided additional professionallearning opportunities for a range of staff, aswell as additional support for school initiativesprovided by business partnerships developedthrough the program. • The STEM course in 7 – 10 has beenevaluated, with student data from the 7, 9 &10 assessments demonstrating that 90% ofstudents achieved at or above their stagelevel when assessed against the GeneralCapability Continuums.. • Chromebook usage has increased studentengagement across the school with allfaculties now purchasing a set oflaptops/iPads or Chromebooks to betterfacilitate student learning in the classroom.

Support for beginning teachers $61, 842 All Beginning and Early Career Teachersundertaking the Accreditation Folio forProficient participated in a new model ofsupport for 2018, comprising of fortnightlymentoring sessions with the Head TeacherProfessional Practice throughout the year.Survey data from the staff participating in thementoring program indicated that they preferthe new mentor model implemented for theyear, as it allowed for more personalisedsupport to be delivered. The BeginningTeacher funding for 2019 will be utilised toimplement a similar model.

in place to support the needs of the Refugeestudents Including: • Unity roll call has helped facilitate theadministrative and orientation supportprovided by the Refugee Coordinator. Eachmorning the coordinator is able tocommunicate whole–school information andensure that students are well informed of theprocesses and procedures required. • Culture Club has provided a regularmeeting time that has been used to deliverclasswork/homework/assessment support aswell as addressing the Welfare supportprovided to the students. • STaRTTS delivered an intensive swimmingprogram to all our refugee students thatprovided them with essential swimming skillsand an enjoyable environment for them torelax and make new friends. • The Book project was a very successfulproject. The students were able to discusstheir journey in a SAFE and creative space.The final product will be shared with thestudents and the wider community. • Students were teamed up with mentorsfrom the Migrant Resource Center to assistthem with pathway options. The mentorsreport back to the Coordinator week 3 eachterm. • STaRTTs presented to all staff about thejourney that refugee students experience andthe trauma that may be associated with thisprocess. Collaboration with The RefugeeStudent Counselling Support Team (RSCST)was essential in ensuring that refugeestudents can also access Counsellingsupport. • Scholarship applications provided studentswith the financial ability to ensure they reachtheir best educational outcome.

Management of non-attendance

All staff has a responsibility to monitor theattendance of students at Hoxton Park High School.

The Education Act 1990 requires that all studentsbetween the ages of 6 and 17 years of age must beenrolled in school or meet the New School Leaving Agelegislation requirements. Students who attend schoolachieve better educational outcomes and experiencegreater success in further education and training. It isthe policy of this school that students must attend alltimetabled lessons unless there is an official variation tothe normal curriculum. Students over 17, known aspost–compulsory students, must attend and activelyengage in the learning process – a minimum of 85%attendance is a good guide. It is the goal of HoxtonPark High School to consistently improve attendanceoutcomes for all students.

Daily roll marking occurs in Morning Routine and it isessential this is an accurate roll. All attendance andattendance issues are based around this record.

Classroom teachers need to include roll marking as apriority for their classroom routine. Rolls should bemarked within the first 10 minutes of each lesson.Faculty concern letters should be sent home to informparents of any chronic absenteeism that may mean astudent is not meeting course requirements.

Year Advisers monitor the attendance of each studentin their year group. When a pattern of non–attendanceoccurs Year Advisers will conduct student interviews,call home and make record of these interventions. YearAdvisers meet regularly with the Deputy Principalsregarding attendance and will update staff at ourmeetings.

The Home School Liaison Officer (HSLO) monitorsstudents, who have fallen below, or are at risk of fallingbelow, 85% attendance. The HSLO conducts interviewswith at risk students and facilitates the formalattendance processes to return students to school.

Procedures for managing absence

Any student who is absent from school for part of or awhole day is required, by law, to bring a signed letter ormedical certificate to justify their absence. Studentsabsent for 2–3 days will be contacted by their Roll Callteacher. Students who are absent beyond this will bereferred to their Year Adviser who will contact home todiscuss any issues that may be preventing a studentfrom participating in their education.Students with lessthan 85% attendance will require a medical certificateto explain their absences. Students who arepersistently absent from school will be referred by theDeputy Principal to the Home School Liaison Officer.

Professional learning and teacher accreditation

In 2018 Professional Learning again played a key focusin the strategic planning of the school. RAM fundingwas utilised to continue the position of Head TeacherProfessional Practice, who oversaw the professionallearning needs of the school, as well as oversaw theaccreditation process for those staff attainingAccreditation at Proficient.

The central focus for professional learning in 2018 werethe Action Learning Projects (ALPs) undertaken by all

Key Learning Areas (KLAs) and whole school teams.Funding was provided to all KLAs to support theprojects, as well as time during School DevelopmentDays. The projects developed drew on evidence–basedpractices aimed at improving student results andengagement. Projects varied across all faculties,however, common themes include best practice forfeedback in assessments, explicit teaching for literacy,best practice to extend student capabilities whenundertaking more complex and abstract learning, thedevelopment of critical and creative thinking skills andhow to move students from surface to deep learning. AllHead Teachers and Project leaders met regularly withthe Head Teacher Professional Practice to discuss theprogression of the projects, evaluate project data andplan for the professional learning needs of staff to bestundertake the projects. In 2019, the Projects willcontinue, with a strong focus on the collection andevaluation of data to evaluate the effectiveness of thestrategies and processes developed in 2018.

2018 also saw an increase in funding allocated to thosepermanent and full time temporary staff membersneeding to undertake Accreditation at the Proficientlevel. This increase in funding led to a new supportmodel that supplemented the reduction of timetabledallocation of those teachers undertaking theAccreditation process. Once a fortnight, staffundertaking the folio process to attain Accreditation atProficient would meet with the Head TeacherProfessional Practice to discuss the progress of theirfolio, as well as identified targets and goals shaped bytheir classroom experiences, such as classroommanagement strategies, Departmental policy andteaching strategies for different student learning needsand abilities. These meetings proved successful, basedon the end of year evaluation survey results and havecontinued in 2019 for new staff needing to complete theAccreditation process.

The school's finance committee, consisting of thePrincipal, Deputy Principals, Head Teacher BusinessAdministration and SAM, meet once a term to manageand oversee the school's finances.

Funding initiatives include: • The additional Head Teacher positions have

provided extra support to whole school projectsincluding finance, professional learning andStudent Wellbeing. As a result of this, newstudent leadership processes have beenimplemented, all faculties have undertakenprojects to enhance student learning andengagement and the PBL framework has beenrelaunched. Community engagement projectshave also led to student enrolments in year 7reaching a 6 year high for 2019.

School performance

NAPLAN

In the National Assessment Program, the results acrossthe Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 literacy andnumeracy assessments are reported on a scale fromBand 1 to Band 10. The achievement scalerepresents increasing levels of skillsand understandings demonstrated in theseassessments.

From 2018 to 2020 NAPLAN is moving from a papertest to an online test. Individual schools are migrating tothe online test, with some schools attempting NAPLANon paper and others online.

Results for both online and paper formats are reportedon the same NAPLAN assessment scale. Anycomparison of NAPLAN results – such as comparisonsto previous NAPLAN results or to results for studentswho did the assessment in a different format – shouldtake into consideration the different test formats andare discouraged during these transition years.

Overall student results have improved in in both thelower and middle range compared to previous years.Our targeted Literacy programs are clearly 'addingvalue' to student results.

For our results in 2018, our year 9 reading resultsdemonstrated a 3.3% growth in students reaching thetop two NAPLAN bands, compared to the schoolaverage. Parent/caregiver, student, teachersatisfaction

Throughout 2018 Hoxton Park High School soughtfeedback from students, teachers and parents tomeasure how we were meeting the expectations of ourstakeholders and to look for new ways to ensure wecontinue to cater for all needs.

In Term 1 of 2018 a Parent focus group was formed todetermine how Hoxton Park High School was meetingparent's expectations. Many different aspects of schoollife were discussed with very pleasing feedback beingheard. A vast majority of parent respondents stated thatthey were supportive of the teachers at Hoxton ParkHigh School. They described them as dedicated andapproachable. "The teachers are a big strength of theschool and should be promoted accordingly in futurecommunication efforts." Further, most of the HoxtonPark High School parents feel that they have a goodrelationship with the school and feel comfortableapproaching the school if there is a problem. "We getphone calls if there is a problem. If a teacher thinks itreally needs to be talked about they will ring us." "Theyare definitely on the front foot! The school is pleasedwith the feedback and look forward to furtherstrengthening the relationship between parents andteachers.

Teachers also participated in the 'Tell Them From Me'survey which covered many areas of their work lifeincluding leadership, learning culture, goals andaspirations, communication and technology. Majority ofrespondents stated that at Hoxton Park High Schoolthey feel supported by their leaders, have ampleopportunities to pursue their interests and goalsthrough Professional Learning and are part of a staffgroup that has high morale and collaboration. They alsobelieve that it is because of this that our students arecontinually receiving engaging lessons which enhanceall learning of every student.

Students of Hoxton Park High School also participatedin the 'Tell Them From Me' survey which explored allareas of their school life, including emotional, social,cultural, learning environment and styles. Studentsurveys were anonymous and gave students theopportunity to give authentic feedback about their ideasand experiences at Hoxton Park High School. Resultsindicated that 75% of students valued school outcomesand feel that there are opportunities offered to manydifferent students – sport, extra–curricular activities,university partnerships and the self–select program.The most overwhelming response was the positiveattitude from the students towards the teachers. Moststudents stated that the teachers at Hoxton Park HighSchool are "nice and friendly" who have positiveapproaches to teaching and are willing to help students.Many also stated that they have improved overall as astudent due to the high expectations of learningenforced by their teachers with a strong focus onexplicit feedback, literacy and writing.

Aboriginal education

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Students'Coordinator 2018

In 2018, the Hoxton Park High School AboriginalCoordinator and the Wellbeing Head Teacher reflectedand reviewed the existing support that Aboriginal andTorres Strait Islander students were provided to ensurethat they line up with the Priority Areas stated in theAboriginal and Torres Strait Islander EducationStrategy.

The Aboriginal Coordinator participated in numerousprofessional training opportunities. In collaboration withseveral Aboriginal Education and Wellbeing advisors,the Personalised Learning Plan (PLP) process wasrefined and also streamlined with the school KeyInitiatives. Each student completed a PLP with theAboriginal coordinator discussing their aspirations,strengths as well as areas they identified they wouldlike to improve in. Two SMART goals were set,ensuring that strategies and key staff were identified.Parents were invited to attend an interview to beinformed and to contribute to the PLP of their child. Thisdata was used to tailor the partnership and programsrun at Hoxton park high school.

The Western Sydney University– Pathways toDreaming

This program ensured that our Stage 5 and 6 studentswere able to attend cultural enriching workshops thatwere set on several of their campuses. They were:addressed by Elders in language; informed about thenatural medicine that the Indigenous people have longused; participated in dance, jewellery making; learnedabout the art of boomerang throwing and much more.The Pathways to Dreaming mentor joined them at allthe events and also on a monthly basis visited ourschool to discuss significant issues, such asstereotypes and limitation faced by Aboriginal andTorres Strait Islander people. Two major projectscompleted with Pathways to Dreaming mentors. Thefirst being a "Living Country, Living Culture" excursionto explore the heart of a very significant landmark forthe Aboriginal people in the Blue Mountains. Theyvisited the land and discussed the history of the areaand had the opportunity to look at the tools andweapons that can be made from Country. The secondMajor project was the creation of HPHS branded NRLball. Many of the students share the love of NRL so thestudents were very excited to create the branding oftheir very own Steddon NRL ball. Their illustrationswere sent to the Visual Design students at the WesternSydney University who then turned in into a digitalimage that was sent to the Steddon Factory to print theNRL balls which each student received.

The University of Wollongong– AIME program

AIME offered both Theatrical Education Workshops aswell as Academic Tutoring services. Students fromYear 8–12 attended theatrical workshops at the

University of Wollongong, Western Sydney Campus.These workshops were broken down to 3 parts. Thefirst being the Exploration of the students AboriginalIdentity the second was Inspirational and Goal settingand the third was known as failure time. So muchgrowth was witnessed by all students and teachersinvolved. These workshops ran per fortnight per stageover a month which ensured the communityconnections between students/mentors/teachers fromother schools had the chance to flourish and have alasting effect. Tutor squads ran at school for 2 hours afortnight and targeted our Stage 4 students. Thisprovided them with the opportunity to receive academicsupport within the school setting by Aboriginal andTorres Strait Islander mentors. This was a verywelcomed addition to our existing support structure as itaddresses the Literacy and Numeracy needs that wereidentified through the completion of the student PLP's.

NRL– School to work and Mirri Mirri YouthLeadership Summit

Nioka and Shaun from School to Work continued tosupport our Stage 6 students. S2W ensures that ourYear 12 students make all the necessary connectionsand are equipped with all the required skills to transitionto their post–school endeavours. This includes resumesupport, seeking work experience opportunities toprepare them for the workforce as well as scholarshipapplications and assistance with tertiary enquiry andcourse application. Our year 11 student participated inthe Mirri Mirri Leadership youth summit which reallygrounded his desire to complete his HSC. In term 4 ouryear 10 students joined the programs an were alsosuccessful applicants and will participate in the SummitJanuary 2019.

Kari– Transition Backpack

The Aboriginal Coordinator was heavily involved in theTransition and Orientation of the year 6 studentsstarting in 2018 at Hoxton Park High. This includedproviding students with all the necessary equipment toensure the success of their transition to HPHS.Students were nominated to receive a KARI backpackwhich was distributed personally to the student onOrientation day. The Aboriginal Coordinator personallymet with the families of these students, establishingconnections and giving parents the opportunity todiscuss any issues or hesitations they may be facing.

In collaboration with AIME mentors, an artwork wascreated and hung in the library in celebration ofReconciliation Week 2018.

In a lead up to 2018 NAIDOC Week, students attendedregular workshops to complete a traditional painting. AMorning tea took place to provide an opportunity forAboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students andparents to interact with organisational partnerships,Department office representative Jayson Neill, Kari,AIME and Pathways to dreaming members.

Multicultural and anti-racism education

Hoxton Park High school continues to strive to meet thespecific needs of our LBOTE students includingstudents learning English as an additional Languageand Dialect (EAL/D), new arrivals and Refugees. TheEAL/D annual survey data was used to inform planningand service delivery within the school to ensure thatspecialist staff is available to support in the delivery ofhigh quality multicultural, anti–racism, EAL/D andrefugee education provisions.

Guided by the STARS and Wellbeing framework, adedicated staff member has been assigned to overseethe enrolment of refugee and humanitarian entrants.They provide additional resources documents inlanguages other than English and initiated programs toassist in the transition and establishment of thesestudents. In 2018, such initiatives included CultureClub, Unity Roll call, The Literacy and NumeracyFoundation book project and The Migrant ResourceCentre– Mentoring program. Establishing cross–agencypartnerships with STARRTs, Refugee counselingservices, and the local Refugee Support Liason hashelped strengthen the welfare and counseling servicesprovided by the school. Training has been delivered toall staff to ensure they are up to date with issuesassociated with the trauma that is often experienced bythe students during their journey and to inform staff onhow this impacts their participation of these students intheir classroom. An addition multilingual SLSO memberwas added to the Learning and Support staff,Interpreting services were used for conference callsand translator were invited to all whole school events inorder to promote positive community relations througheffective communication with parents and communitymembers from diverse cultural, linguistic and religiousbackgrounds. A number of successful applicantsreceived financial assistance which enabled them tofully participate in their schooling and achieve equitableeducational outcomes. Opportunities were sought forRefugee students, to enrol in bridging and enrichmentcourses at UTS and Sydney University, which helpedattend to the disruption of education experienced bysenior refugee students in a hope to support furthereducation. In addition, EAL/D programs are provided ina range of context and delivered in a variety of modesby specialised EAL/D trained staff in the areas ofpedagogy, curriculum, and teacher delivery.

Our Wellbeing team also coordinates a variety ofeducational programs and awareness eventsthroughout the year. These aim to provide students withopportunities to develop skills and understandingaround topics such as resilience, positivecommunication, negotiation and conflict resolution andcultural sensitivity. Activities have included the NationalDay of Action against Bullying and Violence, wherestage 4 and 5 students addressed the modern–day

relevance of such issues, 'Smashed', Year 7 Boysprogram, Year 8 girls program, Girl Talk and the Year 9Chaplain program.

Creative Arts & Performing Arts and Languagesother than English

With the faculty focus directed at developing 21stcentury learners, the faculty has embraced the 4C's aswe teach students the essential skills ofCommunication, Creativity, Critical thinking andCollaboration. These vital skills are at the forefront ofwhat, how and why we teach.

Perspectives Exhibition

On Thursday 15th November, the Creative &Performing Arts (CAPA) and Languages other thanEnglish (LOTE) faculty held its annual exhibition'Perspectives' at the Margot Hardy Gallery at WesternSydney University, Bankstown Campus. The exhibitioncelebrated student achievement in Visual Arts,Photographic and Digital Media, Music and Dance. Aspart of the exhibition, the opening night featuredcurated artworks which displayed a variety of mediumsincluding relief prints, drawings, paintings, ceramicsand digital photography. There were live musicalperformances by our Stage 5 Music students Chris T.and Joshua N. who performed 'River Flows in you'.Kaliyah B., a stage 6 Music elective student performeda solo rendition of 'You are the reason'. Our Stage 5Music student, Trinity V. composed and performed anoriginal emotive piece on guitar as an accompanimentto a digital media presentation. The Stage 5 Japaneseelective student's film, part of the JapaneseFoundations Matsuri film competition also premiered toour audience. Our final act featured the Hoxton DanceEnsemble, a collection of students from years 7 to 10who performed a professionally choreographedhip–hop routine.

Next:2019 Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre

The Casula Powerhouse Arts Centre is holding itsannual exhibition of Visual Arts works from HSCstudents. The exhibition 'Next:2019' recognises theachievements and talents of local students fromschools in the Liverpool community. We are proud toannounce that this year two of our students Jorja M.and Anna V. of Year 12 Visual Arts (2018) wereselected to showcase their body of works as part of thisexhibition.

DEC Arts Initiative: Art Smart Program

Two talented Year 10 Visual Arts students, Sureena C.and Vy N. were selected to participate in the 2018 ArtSmart program. Art Smart is a 4 day series of intensiveartmaking workshops. This year, students headed off tothe infamous Cockatoo Island as an excursion to findinspiration and subject matter for future artmakingprojects. For the remainder of the Art Smart programstudents participated in a series of painting, drawing

and ceramics workshops at the Campbelltown ArtsCentre followed by an exhibition of students' artwork atits gallery.

DEC Arts Initiative: Arts in Action Gifted and TalentedArt Camp

Talented Visual Arts students Arianne S. and Erica B.of Year 10 participated in a three–day residential campdesigned to develop their knowledge, understandingand skills in the making of artworks, focusing on theexploration of a variety of media, techniques and toolsin the areas of painting, drawing/mixed media,sculpture and printmaking. This camp was an excellentopportunity for these promising students to learn fromprofessional artists and extend their skills in asupportive environment of like–minded peers and staff.

Art Enrichment

Students from Year 8 were nominated by their VisualArts teachers to participate in an innovative workshopto extend their creative abilities. Students participatedin an interactive materials workshop run by DavidSolomans from Eckersley's art supplies. Studentscontinued to engage with workshops which focused onwatercolour, mixed media and photographic and digitalmanipulations. The students work produced from thisworkshop was featured in the "Perspectives" exhibitionat Western Sydney University.

Art Club

During 2018, the Visual Arts teachers collaborativelyran an after–school Art Club with students from Year7–12. The Visual Arts faculty delivered a series of1–hour workshops designed to up–skill the students.The workshops focused on the creative forms ofwatercolours, drawing and oil painting. The workshopswere a great success and provided a sound foundationfor students to expand their creative artmaking as theylearned to develop their own self–directed projects.

Showcase 2018

This year our annual Performing Arts evening'Showcase' featured a plethora of acts which allowedstudents to artfully express themselves through Music,Dance and Drama. Our annual Showcase nightcelebrated its 15th year! The night showcased thestudent musical talent from all grades across theschool. Showcase 2018 raised the standard in bothproduction and performance, highlighting theimmensely talented students we have here at HoxtonPark High. There were many outstanding musicalperformances, and this year there were Dramaperformances proving to be very entertaining! OurStage 5 elective Performing Arts class performed theirdance routine to a captivated audience. Studentinvolvement included performance, stage setup, stagechanges, hosting, running the lighting and sound.

HSC exhibition and recital evening

We had the pleasure of inviting parents and friends ofYear 12 Music to attend an intimate performance of

their HSC pieces in the final preparations for theirexternal performance assessment for their HSC. Asusual, the students performed their best, highlightingthe hard work, achievement and dedication of thesetalented students. This year we combined thisgathering with an exhibition of the Year 12 Visual Artsstudents' bodies of works. The evening celebrated thecreative undertakings of these talented students.

In concert

A group of enthusiastic elective students attended the'In Concert – Secondary Choral festival '. In concert' adazzling choral and instrumental music showcasefeature Australia's premier Public Schools MusicEnsembles and the Combined Secondary SchoolsChoir at the beautiful Sydney Town Hall. Students hadthe opportunity to learn from industry professionals andsing with famous recording artists and musicians.

DEC Arts Initiative: the NSW Public Schools StateDrama Camp and the NSW Public Schools StateDrama Ensemble

The NSW Public Schools State Drama Camp is open toYear 11 Drama students and their teachers. This yearMrs Winnall attended the camp with students fromacross the state as they developed their skills tocollaborate, communicate and create performances.Our Year 11 student, Joseph Y. also attended anddeveloped his skills in performance, creativity andcollaboration.

The NSW Public Schools State Drama Ensembleprovides students from Years 9–11 with the opportunityto develop a work for a performance at the State DramaFestival. Joseph Y. of Year 11 wrote and performed hisown monologue as part of his audition and was offereda place in this Ensemble, recognising his talent inDrama and performance.

DEC Arts Initiative: the NSW Public Schools StateDrama Festival

Elective Drama and Performing Arts students attendedthe 2018 NSW Public Schools State Drama Festival.The festival showcased more than 800 students fromover 100 public schools including Hoxton Park! Ourvery own Joseph Y. was featured in the NSW PublicSchools State Drama Ensemble performance "AndThey All Come Tumbling Down". Each performanceexemplified the collaborative nature of drama and putforward engaging and thought–provoking ideas.

Performances at Middleton Grange's Spring Fair

Our talented performers from our stage 5 and stage 6Music electives were invited to entertain the public atlocal primary school, Middleton Grange's Spring Fair.Also part of the presentations was the performance bythe Hoxton Dance Ensemble. A group of dedicated and talented students formed theHoxton Dance Ensemble and participated in a series ofhip–hop dance workshops with industry professionalJet Valencia. The routine was specificallychoreographed to extend the dance skills and abilitiesof our students. Students demonstrated their flair fordance at a variety of presentation opportunitiesincluding assemblies, exhibition openings andcommunity events.

Year 7 Performing Arts Dance Battle

This year we expanded our Year 7 curriculum and allyear 7 students participated in dance lessonschoreographed and delivered by international Hip Hopdancer Jet Valencia. All 5 classes learnt a differentroutine and we held our first ever 'Dance–offcompetition'. All classes performed their routine beforethe judges as the performances were hotly contested.Students enjoyed the opportunity to collaborate andexpress themselves through dance in a supportive andencouraging environment.

Excursions

Expanding upon the experiences provided in theclassroom, the Creative & Performing Arts Faculty hasprovided numerous experiences for our students,outside the four corners of the classroom. Theseincluded: • 11 & 12 Visual Arts to the Art Gallery of NSW to

view Art Express – 2017 HSC Body of Work. • Year 10 Photography and Visual Arts Excursion

to the Art Gallery of NSW. • Elective Drama and Performing Arts students

attended the 2018 NSW Public Schools StateDrama Festival.

LOTE: Japanese

Kosuge Junior High School Visit

During May, our school hosted another successful 3day cultural exchange visit from Kosuge Junior HighSchool which included a study tour program forJapanese students and teachers. Our school waschosen again this year as one of the places for theirstudy tours in Australia. The experience offeredstudents an opportunity to participate in across–cultural exchange in our school setting.

Japan Foundation: Video Matsuri film competition

Our Year 10 Japanese elective students entered theannual Video Matsuri film competition from the JapanFoundation. Each year a 'signature item' needs to befeatured and this year it was a 'mug cup'. Our creativeand talented students wrote, acted, directed andproduced their own Japanese film: 'Ugly Mugly'. Whilethere could only be one winner per category, our schoolreceived a 'special mention' and acknowledgement bythe judges. This opportunity not only allowed them toshowcase their Japanese communication skills, butalso offered them a valuable opportunity to furtherdevelop 21st century super skills: critical thinking,communication and collaboration.

Japanese Language Workshop Tanken Centre

Selected students of Year 8, and elective classes ofYear 9 and Year 10 were given an opportunity to attendthe language workshop. The workshop providedstudents with a stimulating and authentic Japaneseenvironment, with tatami mats, shoji, and Zen garden topromote their interest of learning and further developtheir Japanese language skills.

Sushi Workshop

Year 8 and Japanese elective students participated inthis workshop with Chef Dekura. In this sushiworkshop, students were immersed in Japaneselanguage and culture through making 'koala rolls'. Thestudents who participated in the workshops madeJapanese sweets and sushi rolls. The program ofactivities introduces students to Japanese cuisine,eating etiquette, and making a variety of sushi.

Career 2018 Annual Report

In 2018, Careers was able to further strengthen anddevelop programs that provide opportunities for ourstudents to successfully fulfil their post–schooltransition plans. These programs have been designedto cater to our wide variety of students and would havenot been possible without the input of our localcommunity. • TAFE delivered Vocational Education and

Training (TVET) and School BasedApprenticeship and Traineeship (SBAT) had 3students successfully complete their certificate inHuman Services or have commenced their 2ndyear in their Light Vehicle apprenticeship course.These courses will be readily available for ourstudents to further develop their enterprise skills.

• Our Transition to Work Programs has become anintegral component to our students succeeding intheir post–school transition plans. In collaborationwith Workskill and Your Town, we have been ableto successfully transition over 10 students fromYears 9 to 11 into Work Readiness programs thatlead to seeking a full–timeapprenticeship/traineeship. All of our studentsparticipating in these programs have been able tofind employment or have continued with tertiaryeducation.

• Entrepreneurship programs such as GenerationEntrepreneur and $20 Boss Challenge withFoundations of Young Australians havestrengthened our students' abilities to utilise theirenterprise skills such as problem–solving andcritical thinking. With these projects, our studentshave been able to work alongside industryleaders to develop their school–based businessideas and run the business during their own time.As a result, nine of our Year 10 students havecreated a business called 'Mulchiculture' that sellsmulch. The proceeds will be reinvested back intothe school and with the continual support ofindustry leaders such as Salesforce andKiddsbay, they are continuing their journey into2019 with the hope of making greater returns.

• Partnerships with our local businesses haveenabled our students to participate in regular workexperience. Organisations such as Mainfreight,Mastercom, Police NSW, local primary schools,Tata Consultancy, The Academy of InteractiveEntertainment, Diior10 and Danrae Waterproofinghave volunteered their time and expertise toensure our students are well informed about theirfuture career pathways. We thank these partnersfor their continued support and guidance for ourstudents and look forward to greater partnershipopportunities in 2019.

• Our collaborations with Universities such as theUniversity of Wollongong, University of NewSouth Wales and Western Sydney Universityhave encouraged our ATAR students to strive fortheir best. These university based programs haveallowed our students to have a greater insight intothe expectations and commitment required to besuccessful at a tertiary level. Furthermore, ourYear 7 – 9 Self–Select classes encourage ourstudents to explore a variety of careeropportunities offered through tertiary education.Each class is given a personalised tour ofuniversity facilities such as Science, Law andHealth and has assisted with the shaped theirunderstanding in the value of further education.

• Our graduating class of 2018 had a prosperousyear with 85% of our ATAR students awardedwith an early offer in their desired universitycourse before receiving their HSC and ATARresults. Furthermore, four of our studentsreceived scholarships from Public EducationFoundation and Macquarie University to assistwith their education.

Hoxton Science Initiative

This program is a tailor–made gifted Science programwith Hoxton Park, Hinchinbrook and Middleton GrangePrimary Schools'. The emphasis of the program is toallow primary school students to participate inhands–on experiments with our highly qualified sciencestaff. Prior to entering the program, students areintroduced to the program by our HSI teachers andshown an informative clip about the program, completea written application form, seek a teacher'sendorsement and sit for a formal science examination.20 students (each term) from each primary school areselected to participate in the program and studentsstudy exciting modules including robotics and rockets.A closing celebration is held for students whoparticipate in the program including their parents,Primary School Principals and staff. The event is ahuge success and very well attended. The positivefeedback about the program from community membersis overwhelming and reflects the success of theinitiative.

Swimming, Cross Country and Athletics student helpers

Students were selected from elective classes includingPASS and VET Sport Coaching to assist duringcarnival organisation and develop strong relationshipswith primary school students, staff and members of the

Zone Swimming Carnivals, Athletics Carnivals andCross–Country Carnivals for 2 partnership schools,Hinchinbrook PS and Hoxton Park PS.

Hosting of Athletics Carnival at HPHS

In 2018 Hoxton Park HS hosted Middleton GrangePrimary School's Athletics Carnival. As we have ampleoutdoor fields and long jumps pit our school is theperfect location for primary schools to run their AthleticsCarnival. This event also provided an opportunity formembers of the local community to see our school inaction and meet students and staff in an organised, funevent.

Self Select/Scholarships

Self Select is a class which runs in Years 7–10 wherestudents choose to enrol based on their ability,enthusiasm and motivation for learning. Students areable to address key components of the formalcurriculum in a much shorter time frame, allowing themto revisit various topics to increase their depth,knowledge and understanding. Students are continuallyin an environment with like–mind learners and are in anenvironment that fosters their love and enthusiasm forlearning.

At Hoxton Park HS we also offer a wide range ofscholarships for students starting Year 7 across allareas of our curriculum including English, Maths,Science, Visual Arts, Performing Arts, Technology andPublic Speaking. These students are offered aScholarship package with to help in their success asHoxton Park High School.

Year 4 and 5 Primary Schools visits at Hoxton Park HS

Students in Year 4 and Year 5 from the 3 partnershipprimary schools attend Hoxton Park HS for a day andparticipate in taster lessons of High School curriculumand daily life. Students completed lessons inHospitality, Woodwork, Metalwork, Science, Agricultureand Farm and Creative and Visual Arts delivered by ourteachers with the assistance of Hoxton Park HSstudents. This initiative highlights the differentcurriculum opportunities for primary school studentsand staff.

Hoxton Coffee Cart

Utilising our mobile coffee cart, our qualified Hospitalitystudents freshly brewed and served coffee to parentsand staff during morning drop off time at ourpartnership primary schools – Hoxton Park PublicSchool, Middleton Grange Public School andHinchinbrook Public School.

enter the workforce. Students are matched with acorporate mentor who has shared interests andexperiences. They work in groups and individually insessions that include goal setting, building relationshipsand confidence, communication, realising yourstrengths and The Working World. 20 studentsparticipated in this program in 2018 and 100% ofstudents stated they believed the program has assistedtheir learning potential and confidence.

FOCUS (IAG)

Focus seeks to provide young women with theessential leadership skills needed to engage in asuccessful, meaningful career. 8 female students fromYear 11 worked in small groups with female executiveswho act as role models and mentors. It aims to supportyoung women to develop their leadership skills andaspire to senior roles in business and the community –to improve achievement and foster a sense ofself–belief that will encourage students to aim high andhave confidence in their leadership abilities. Sessionsinclude an introduction to leadership styles, realisingstrengths and creating a leadership picture. All studentsstated they believed the program has assisted theirlearning potential and confidence.

WESTERN SYDNEY UNIVERSITY LINKS

The Fast Forward Program is a partnership betweenWestern Sydney University and Western SydneySchools which helps students to see the value ofcontinuing their education through to year 12 andbeyond.

Aims of the program:

To increase Western Sydney school students'engagement in learning and the completion of year 12

To develop students' confidence, knowledge, skills andeducational attainment

To enhance Western Sydney students' awareness ofpost–school education opportunities

To promote the benefits of lifelong learning, lifeopportunities, to students and their families

To improve the participation of Western Sydneystudents in higher education

Retention rates of students from Hoxton Park HighSchool in 2017 were 83.8% and this refers to thestudents who re–enrolled the second year aftercompleting the first year of their degree.

Fast Forward in School sessions

Delivered by a Fast Forward coordinator in school,modules focus on relevant study sessions including,interview skills, stress management, resilience andstudy skills and time management options to supporttheir studies. Multiple in–school workshops and one onone sessions were held throughout the year with FastForward students ranging from Year 9–12.

University Conference Days

Workshops and sessions designed for students toexplore the university grounds and considerpost–school opportunities in an interactive andengaging format.

UNIVERSITY OF WOLLONGONG LINKS

2018 was the second year of a new partnership withthe University of Wollongong. Due to the opening oftheir new campus at Liverpool, we are 1 of only 5schools given this opportunity and it has created a newrange of options for our students that have beenpresented to them by the University through our school.

Year 10 Future Finder Day

30 students travelled to the Liverpool Campus toparticipate in a program that aimed to raise awarenessof tertiary education, inform students of the universityand vocational study options and pathways as well asexplore their education and employment goals.Students enjoyed the day and all stated that they weregiven new information about the opportunities that arenow available for them.

Year 11 HSC Bootcamp Workshop

All Year 11 ATAR students participated in 3 hour thisworkshop which explored Exam Preparation, studentlearning styles, note taking, goal setting and decisionmaking. Students were split into 3 groups and pairedwith mentors who were current University ofWollongong students' mentors to assist them with theprocess and answer any questions about University life.Students thoroughly enjoyed the day with all statingthat they had received new and useful information.

Year 12 Summer Master Class

We had 2 students successfully apply for the SummerMaster Class which is a three–week intensive course inEnglish held during the summer holidays to providestudents with a head start on the HSC in a universityenvironment. The successful completion of thisprogram has provided the student with an EarlyAdmissions Interview and a subject credited towards aUOW degree.

Stage 4 Literacy FocusEnglish Faulty

There were significant changes implemented within theEnglish Faculty in 2018, as all Stage 4 teaching andlearning programs were revised in 2017 to focus onLiteracy. These changes were embedded within the

faculty's teaching and learning pedagogical approach in2018. All English Teachers undertook professionallearning in 2017 with our literacy consultant prior toteaching the new units in 2018. This new approachprovided students with the foundation of 'reading' and'writing', as they focused on: • Grammar and Punctuation • Comprehension Strategies • Persuasive Writing • Imaginative Writing • Critical and Creative Thinking and Problem

Solving SkillsThis provided students with not only life–long skills, butalso assisted them across multiple Key Learning Areas,as they had learnt transferable skills. The teachingsequence consisted of the first three weeks of eachterm focusing on Grammar and Punctuation, followedby Comprehension in Term 1, Persuasive Writing inTerm 2, Imaginative Writing in Term 3 and TransferableCreative Critical Thinking Skills in Term 4.

Each individual students growth was mapped andevaluated at the end of each task and compared totheir most recent NAPLAN results, which presentedpromising signs, as 80% of student presented growth inYear 7 and 8 during 2018.

We look forward to continue teaching, evaluating andrefining this approach within the English Faculty so thatwe can best cater and provide our students withopportunities and skill for life long learning.

Premier's Debating Challenge

In 2018 we reached a milestone, as we saw the largestnumber of students from all stages compete in theNSW Premier's Debating Challenge Competition. It wasan exciting adventure, as our students competedagainst multiple other schools from Sydney's SouthWest Region, providing an opportunity to interact withother peers from local schools. We achieved a recordnumber competing student in the competition, with atotal number of 33 students. All participants gainednewly learnt skills, while growing with confidence inpublic speaking and debating. As per every other year,we continued to not only provide opportunities for ourprevious members of the debating teams, but alsoinvited new members, who assumed their new roleswith enthusiasm and represented the school withrespect.

Our debating teams consisted of our finest publicspeakers within the school, as these young men andwomen presented exception matter and mannerism ofdebating.

Our Stage 6 team consisted of: Thea H., Andyson V.,Aram W., Dina Z., Gabrielle L., Natalee A., AleksandraT., Gisell P., Soran Y. and Yasemin O.

Our Stage 5 team consisted of: Thomas M., Mikayla C.,Isabella M., Ching Chi Y., Ethan D., Murat D., Layla H.,Mark L., Wybeen S. and Andrew J.Our Stage 4 teamconsisted of: Jade F., Jeremy P., Patrick M., John K.,Joshua K., Alex X., Prona A., Tracy D., Sandy A.,

Hanzallah B., Gabriel T. and Hannah Y.

These students represented the school with honour,respect and resilience, as they undertook multipledebates. They debated over a variety of topics, whichfocused on current affairs and world issues. We wouldlike to congratulate all students who took part in the2018 Premier's Debating Challenge and look forward to2019, as another year full of debating adventures.

Sport 2018 Annual Report

Sport was subjected to vast changes in 2018 and thiswas the catalyst for a new approach that aligned withthe PDHPE Action Learning Plan, which focussed on(IPAS) Increasing Physical Activity and Skills. Therewere many events that were conducted at venues forthe first time to increase enjoyment, participationthrough an improved environment and facilities. Thesewhole school carnivals provided many students with theopportunity to showcase their skills to their peers withstadiums that had spectators close to the action. Ourstudent cohort demonstrated exemplary behaviourwhilst attending these events with all the facilitiesimpressed and excited to host these events in thefuture for our school.

There were two swimming carnivals in 2018 with achange to when the annual event is to be held movingforward. The first swimming carnival held in Term 1 washeld at the Whitlam Centre in Liverpool. The venue wasan improvement compared to the previous facility,however, the increased student attendance meant thatthe stadium was unable to accommodate all students inattendance. Nevertheless, students had an excellentday with a variety of events and all strokes beingconducted in the various age races. It was pleasing tohave student's progress to the next level of competitionand represent Hoxton Park High School at the zonecarnival. Due to the attendance of our students, it wasdecided that we required a larger facility to host ourschool carnival and this was limited due to our localarea options. With this in mind and the availability oflarger venues, Gordon Fetterplace Aquatic Centre inBradbury was deemed the most suitable option. Theavailability was limited due to our locality but we wereable to secure a spot in Term 4 to host the 2019carnival for Years 8–12. The event was fantastic andpositive feedback was received regarding the newvenue from all who attended. With the success of thecarnival and timing of the event, the new date willbecome a permanent fixture for future years. Theathletics carnival was moved from where it was held in2017 at Warwick Farm, to Campbelltown AthleticsStadium. The venue provided an opportunity for allstudents to perform on a world class athletics track. Asusual, this carnival proves to be the most popularamongst our students and the day was fantastic.

This was the last year that Hoxton Park High Schoolparticipated in Grade Sport. This decision was notmade lightly and after consulting the student body andstaff, it was decided that moving forward our schoolwould run Integrated Sport. Cost and the actual timethat students were actively participating in sport werethe main deciding factors. With this decision there will

be a new model for Year 9 and 10 in 2019, Year 7 and8 have been participating in this model with pleasingresults and benefits. Actual physical activity time issignificantly higher when compared to Grade Sport andregular choice of sports and constant variety has beena success according to student feedback. There hasbeen a drastic increase in the amount of sportingequipment available this will provide all students withgreater opportunity to access a variety of new andinnovative physical pursuits.

The annual Gala Day for Year 7 and 8 were heldthroughout the year and once again the students ofHoxton Park High School exemplified our HoxtonHonour Code values. A variety of different sports wereoffered and all who attended had a fantastic time withoutstanding sportsmanship displayed.

Hoxton Park students represented our school in variousknockout tournaments. The school had representativeteams in rugby league, basketball, soccer, volleyballand futsal. The most successful team in 2018 was theUnder 14 Girls West Leagues Cup Rugby Leagueteam. This was the first year the event was conductedand our team qualified for the semi–finals.Unfortunately, in an extremely close game, they wereunable to get the victory, but showed fantastic spirit,sportsmanship and were gracious in defeat. In 2019hopefully, they can do one better and make the grandfinal and play at Campbelltown Stadium.

Overall, 2018 was a fantastic year for sport at HoxtonPark High School and hopefully, 2019 will be evenbetter!

Technological and Applied Studies and VocationalEducation and Training Annual School Report 2018

Technological and Applied Studies and VocationalEducation and Training (VET) offers a broad range ofsubject choices and training pathways for students topursue their career interests and aspirations. Oursubjects have been aligned to deliver key learningoutcomes whilst also innovatively developing studentskills to promote the growth of students to becomeactive citizens within the wider community. Teachersactively engage a variety of classes to collegially worktowards a common goal and meet the needs of eachindividual student. Students from Stage 5 and 6commonly complete set tasks together to promotementoring between students, provide leadershipopportunities and to allow students to work collegially toachieve success.

In 2018, the VET scope at Hoxton Park High Schoolwas increased to include a wide variety of frameworkswhich provide fundamental learning opportunities for adiverse range of students. The Stage 5 AgrifoodOperations course was introduced at the school toprovide a platform for students to achieve a Certificate Iqualification to align with their agricultural interests.Currently, there are 3 Stage 5 and 8 Stage 6 VETcourses available for students to undertake in theirpattern of studies (Hospitality – Food and Beverage,Construction, Metal and Engineering, Retail Services,Primary Industries, Information and Digital Technology,

Sport Coaching, Manufacturing Pathways and AgrifoodOperations). In 2019 and beyond, there areopportunities for our school to increase the range ofVET courses offered to include new frameworks suchas finance.

To promote and sustain our authenticity in the deliveryof TAS and VET courses, we have forged strongpartnerships with various industries and businesses.These community connections offer significant supportby providing access for students to work placement,work experience, mentoring relationships and industryvisits. These partnerships have resulted in many of ourstudents being offered apprenticeships andtraineeships as a successful post–school careerpathway. In addition, many of our students have usedtheir qualifications and critical, creative andemployability skills to successfully enrol in and pursuefurther education such as university.

Throughout 2018, we have continued and developed arange of social enterprises to support student learning,engagement and achievement. The innovative teachingand learning activities provide unique opportunities forstudents to acquire transferable knowledge and skillsthat will complement their chosen career pathways andfurther training or employment. The authentic learningexperiences available to students include: • Cafe Hoxton is a school–based cafe which is

operated by students to an industry standard. Thecafe is run by students to develop fundamentalemployability skills. The funds raised provide aplatform for students to access barista trainingand develop fundamental employability skills.

• Cafe Hoxton Coffee Cart is a mobile caféthat is able to complete service periods externallyfrom the school grounds. Students use the coffeecart to create a range of espresso coffee to thewider school community. The coffee cartcompleted service periods for a variety of primaryschools throughout 2018.

• Class Chef at Cucina 105 is an annual event inour school calendar, whereby Years 10 – 12Hospitality students takeover Cucina 105. Cucina105 is an Italian restaurant located in centralLiverpool. Students collaboratively work with aHead Chef and Food and Beverage Supervisor todevelop a menu, prepare and complete a serviceperiod. Agricultural Farm

• Sport Coaching students complete their workplacement hours by coaching students in bothprimary and high school in a range of sportingactivities to develop their employability skills.

• Retail Stationery Shop is an internal retail outletthat allows Retail Services students to gainexperience in stock control, merchandising, salesand marketing. The Stationary Shop is open tostudents to purchase items for their learningactivities.

• Business Luncheon is hosted annually to reviewand share ideas for continuous improvement withour key stakeholders and community partners.This results in improved support for our student'swork experiences leading to the expansion ofbusiness mentoring and community partnerships.The Annual Business Luncheon also provides a
