Welcome to the Glen Forrest Campus Selecting a school for your child’s education is an important decision. The friends made, sometimes on the first day, often stay with them for life. The friendships they make shape their views, influencing their actions and opinions. Parents need to look at the curriculum and beyond when deciding on a school. Schools are a network of relationships. It is the strength and nature of these relationships that creates the school culture. Relationships between students, relationships between staff, relationships between students and staff – all must be built on a foundation of mutual respect. Respect, tolerance and empathy for others are the cornerstones of the value system of Helena College. I hope that parents and students enjoy their time at Helena College. As with all things in life we derive greater gains when we become more involved. Each student should aim for excellence in all areas of the College programme. It is his or her duty to make the most of every opportunity to improve academically, socially and physically. I would encourage students to sample all of what is on offer at the College. Parents too, will gain a greater understanding of school practices and develop a deeper sense of belonging if they become involved in carnivals, productions and Parents’ & Friends’ events. As an organisation we welcome your thoughts and views. I would encourage all parents to closely monitor the progress of their sons and daughters as they move through the College, to give us feedback on the positives and the negatives. Constructive parent feedback assists the staff in improving the education for your child. Ian Lyons College Principal

History of the College

Helena College Darlington Campus has a long history as an independent primary school in Western Australia. Archival records indicate that it commenced in 1888 as Perth Jones’ Preparatory School for Boys and was conducted for a time in Bishop’s House, Mount Street Perth, under the Principalship of Mrs Load-Jones.

After several site changes the school was relocated to McNeil Street, Cottesloe as Helena School until, during the war in 1941, the school was moved to Darlington. The name Helena was derived from the Princess Helena College in England which was attended by Jessica, one of Mrs Load-Jones’ daughters. From 1942-1972 Helena School was run by Misses Jane Ashbury and Mary Jones as an Anglican boarding school.

In 1972 Sally Herzfeld and her husband Tom, bought the school as a real ‘private’ school. When the Helena School Council formally took over the school’s governance in 1973 the school became a non-profit non-denominational day school. The Darlington site was bought from the Herzfelds.

As its first Principal, the Council appointed Mrs Allison (Sally) Herzfeld. Her successor in 1983 was Mr Brian Hassell. Mr David Harrison commenced as Principal in 1989 and Mrs Marie Barton was appointed in 2007. Current Head of Junior School, Mr Greg Miller, was appointed for the start of 2011.

With strong parental support and encouragement, a secondary campus was established on the 8.3 hectare site in Bilgoman Road, Glen Forrest.

The first class of 27 Year 8 students commenced at the College in 1988. Mrs Sally Herzfeld was appointed Coordinator for two years. In 1990 Helena School, with its primary and secondary campuses, officially became Helena College Junior School and Helena College Senior School and Mr John Allen-Williams was appointed as Foundation Principal. After 20 years of dedicated service to the College Mr Allen-Williams retired in 2010 and Mr Ian Lyons was appointed Principal in Term Four of that year.

In 2012 the Glen Forrest Campus was authorised as an International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme World School and in 2015 the Darlington Campus became a candidate school for the International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme. In 2015 the two campuses were re-named as Helena College Darlington Campus and Glen Forrest Campus and Mr Ian Lyons was appointed Foundation Principal (K-12). In 2016 we welcomed the first intake of Year 6 students onto the Glen Forrest Campus. Throughout its long history Helena College has always focused on student-centered learning and whole person development, with staff, students and parents Bringing Out The Best Together (College motto).

Feedback and complaints procedure

Helena College's policy is to welcome suggestions and comments from parents and to act promptly, with as open communication as possible, on feedback and complaints. General feedback is best directed to the relevant staff or committees involved with the information. In the case of concerns or possible complaints please view the Disputes and Complaints Policy and flow charts (available on the College website > search Policies http://www.helenacollege.wa.edu.au/discover/policies-2/ or via SEQTA Engage > Documents > search Policies) to determine the most appropriate manner to communicate your concern. These documents refer to the process for complaints raised by students, parents or guardians. The aim is to provide a clear set of guidelines and reliable expectations. Anonymous complaints will not be addressed. It is the College's policy that complaints made must not rebound adversely on students, and, accordingly, complaints will be treated confidentially and information disseminated only when necessary. It is the intention of the College to work with parents in the best interests of the children and young people in our care. Each complaint made will be treated as an expression of genuine concern that needs a response unless it is specifically requested that no response be forwarded. Examples may include situations in which it is felt the College

• has done something wrong • has failed to do something it should have done • has acted unfairly, impolitely or ineffectively.

College policies are reviewed regularly. For further information on College policies please contact Ian Lyons, College Principal or Greg Miller, Head of Junior School.

Curriculum in 2018

The IB MYP is a challenging framework that encourages students to make practical connections between their studies and the real world.

The MYP is a five-year programme offered at Helena College from Years 6-10. The MYP curriculum framework comprises eight subject groups, providing a broad and balanced education for young adolescents.

The eight subject groups are: language acquisition

language and literature individuals and societies

sciences mathematics

arts physical and health education

design (technology)

MYP students also complete a personal project in Years 9-10, where they decide what they want to learn about, identify what they already know, discover what they will need to know to complete the project, and create a proposal or criteria for completing it.

The MYP aims to help students develop their personal understanding, their emerging sense of self and responsibility in their community. See Appendix B (page 34) for 10 Reasons IB MYP poster. [The text above is taken from the IB website > http://www.ibo.org/programmes/middle-years-programme/curriculum/]

This prepares them for the preparatory hike during the year and the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award expedition in Year 10. Year10subjectsAs the first year of Upper School, Year 10 is structured to provide opportunities for students to apply recognised academic and personal strengths in a challenging environment that focuses them toward their course selection for Years 11-12. The College’s Vocational Education programme is specifically designed to help students understand career pathways so that they make appropriate choices for their future. In Year 10 2018, students study a wide-ranging curriculum across the eight subjects of the IB Middle Years Programme, and prepare for WACE courses in 2019. Years11-12coursesFor studies beyond Year 10, Helena College will have a distinct orientation to qualification for tertiary entrance in either the university or TAFE system. most up-to-date library resources. 2. Donations to the Helena College building fund contribute towards the buildings and facilities

of the College. 3. Donations to the Helena College special education fund are used to provide resources to

enable the Darlington and Glen Forrest Campuses to offer extra support and assistance for those students who need it. This support could be in the provision of physical resources, teaching materials and new technologies to assist and/or extend individual learning.

The building, special education and library funds are three wonderful ways for members of our community to give additional practical support back to the College. Annual giving brochures are always available at reception for each campus and are also distributed to families each year in May, just prior to the end of the financial year. However, donations are welcome at any time. To donate to the funds, please complete the annual giving form and return to reception. A tax-deductible receipt will be forwarded to you once processed.

Your annual giving gift will have a lasting impact on the education of all students of Helena College - today, tomorrow and into the future. For further information regarding annual giving please contact the Community Relations Manager. Email [email protected] or phone 9298 9100 ext 117. Assemblies - values, culture and wellbeing programme Values, culture and wellbeing programme assemblies provide a wonderful opportunity for parents to observe students in a different context. The Directors of Middle and Upper School develop an assembly timetable with homerooms attending assembly on alternate Fridays, with an extended homeroom session the following week. There are several combined school assemblies during the year for Darlington and Glen Forrest Campus students and staff to celebrate and recognise Anzac Day and other important events. The dates for these c o m b i n e d assemblies will be published on the College calendars. Parents are most welcome to join us for assemblies. Years 6-12 assemblies and K-12 assemblies are held in the gymnasium with Middle or Upper School assemblies held in the performing arts centre or the amphitheatre. Please remember, assembly pictures and/or recordings are not to be uploaded to public forums (such as personal Facebook pages, YouTube or Twitter) as the footage will more than likely contain students other than your own student. Thank you for your support on this matter. [See also notes under photography / video] Awards Night The annual Awards Night is the final College function for the school year. The evening provides an opportunity for many of the students to present performances for families and also to review the major developments of the school year. Students who have excelled in academic and sporting achievement and/or effort are also recognised. All students (from Years 6-12) are expected to attend (wearing summer uniform) and to sit with their parents. Other immediate family members are also welcome. Awards Night 2018 will be held on Thursday, 6 December. Behaviour management The Student Discipline Policy is designed to promote a safe and positive learning community that promotes student wellbeing. Every member of the community has the right to learn and work in a place where they feel valued and safe. To ensure this, students have rights and responsibilities. Students are responsible for their own actions and are obliged to see that the rights of each person in the school are guaranteed.

RightsEach student has the right to learn without being disrupted by others. Each student has the right to be treated courteously and respectfully. Each student has a right to work in a safe environment. Each student has a right to feel proud of the College and themselves.

Responsibilities Students should not interfere with any other student's learning.

Students should treat all members of the College community with courtesy and respect. Students should not endanger others by word or action. Students should act in ways that help build a positive public image of the College.

The College believes that student behaviour is best managed in ways that promote restorative practices and are educative in nature. It aims to work collaboratively with parents to develop socially responsible young people who take responsibility for their actions. Corporal punishment is prohibited at Helena College. We also prohibit other degrading punishments, meaning any punishment which is incompatible with respect for human dignity, including corporal punishment and non-physical punishment which belittles, humiliates, denigrates, scapegoats, threatens, scares or ridicules a child. Parents will be contacted when there are serious or ongoing concerns about a student.

Bicycles Students who ride bikes to school must wear a helmet. Please provide a lock for a n y bike parked in school bike racks. Students should walk their bikes whilst on school grounds. Bikes parked on campus are at each rider’s own risk. Books and stationery Booklists are distributed to Year 10 and Year 11 students in September as the new Years 11- 12 courses commence in week three of Term Four. Booklists for the following year's Years 7-10 are named and handed to the students mid Term Four. Future Year 7 students are issued booklists in their orientation package. Year 6 students will receive all their stationery and book requirements from their teachers as the need arises. These include diaries, headphones for their laptops, writing implements, scientific calculator, exercise books, document wallets etc. Spare copies of booklists are available at the College (Please enquire at reception) or can be downloaded from SEQTA Engage > Documents > search booklists. Parent concerns or queries regarding booklists should be directed to Mrs Helen White via email [email protected] The College book and stationery supplier is Campion, 7 Oxleigh Drive MALAGA 6090. Phone (08) 6240 2799. For ordering, collection and purchasing details please see the instructions on the front of the booklists. Please note: No orders can be accepted at the College. See also Appendix C (page 35) for information on the Sustainable School Shop for buying and selling secondhand uniforms and textbooks. The P&F has funded an annual subscription for this service for parents. Boundaries during school hours Students are expected to stay within the bounds of the vehicle access roads and oval during school hours unless under the direction of a teacher. Students are not to leave the College grounds during school hours without permission from the Deputy Principal- Operations or appropriate Director, usually in response to parent authorisation. Bus services Contract bus services operate to collect and deliver students to and from both campuses. They service the school catchment areas including Kalamunda, Lesmurdie, Darlington, Midland, Parkerville, Swan View, Mundaring, Gidgegannup and surrounding areas. An application form to use College buses is available from administration (as well as available via SEQTA Engage > Documents > search Buses) and should be completed and returned to administration before the first journey. Payment is by single journey tokens that are handed to the driver at the start of each journey. Students and parents can purchase tokens ($5 each) from administration using cash, EFPTOS or credit card. Discounts are offered for purchases of 50, 100 or 200 tokens at a time. If the bus use noted on the Bus Use Form varies, or if the service is no longer required, please notify administration by phone or email. Bush fire response The Glen Forrest Campus has a well-developed policy and procedure for responding to a bush fire or bush fire threat. Parents need to be aware of the following aspects of that policy. If a Catastrophic Fire Weather Warning (CFWW) is declared, with sufficient warning, parents will be informed that the school will be closed until the warning is downgraded. Parents will be contacted (through one or more of the following forms of communication – SMS, telephone, post on College Facebook page, website or via email) to inform them of when the school will be closed. Parents should not return their children to the school until a notification is received to say that it is safe to do so. It is extremely important to ensure that the school has up to date contact details for parents. If the Catastrophic Fire Weather Warning is declared with insufficient time for us to pre- emptively close the school the College will employ the policy and procedures for responding to a bushfire threat. In this instance, the school will remain open and parents will not be contacted. We ask that parents do not attempt to telephone the school (with regard to the CFWW) as this may hinder our ability to communicate with the appropriate emergency services.

In the serious event that a fire is approaching the Glen Forrest Campus the gymnasium is our sa fe r bu i ld ing . Please do not attempt to come to the school to collect your student unless asked to do so by the school. In the event of such an emergency, the school will contact radio station ABC 720 and ask that parents tune in for regular updates. Students will be safer in the gymnasium than on the roads and the less traffic there is to get in the way of emergency services the safer your student will be. Evacuating/exiting from the gymnasium would occur only under the direction/direct instruction from the appropriate emergency services and this information will be communicated to parents as soon as is practicable. Please rest assured that the safety of our students is our first priority. Calendar The College uses a Google calendar, which parents can sync to their devices or access via SEQTA or the website. For information on how to sync the College calendar to your device go to >http://www.helenacollege.wa.edu.au/communications/helena-calendars/ Details of important school events are communicated to parents via each newsletter and the What’s On email which is distributed to parents every Friday. Keep a note of important dates and events, as parental involvement is often a feature of our functions. Term dates are listed at the front of this parent handbook. Camps Camps are an essential and integral part of the Helena College curriculum. All students are expected to attend the year camp/s unless a medical condition prohibits their participation in the activities. Parents are required to submit the HC Absence From Camp / Excursion form which is available via SEQTA Engage > Documents > Policies. Please attach a medical certificate to support a request for absence from a College camp for medical reasons. The Year 12 Rottnest Retreat and other specialist camps (eg languages, politics and law, music, ski trip etc) are optional. All other camps are curriculum related and are compulsory for all students. Canteen The College canteen is run by a manager and an assistant and can only operate every day with the help of p a re n t volunteers. Menus and c u r re n t price lists are available on the College website, via SEQTA Engage > Documents > search Canteen or in person from the canteen staff. Updates are included in the newsletters. The canteen menu is varied throughout the year according to season. Casual dress days Casual dress days are a method of fundraising for worthy causes. In order to maintain safety on these days, students must wear adequate casual clothing that will protect them whilst in school. Please note:

• Normal jewellery and hair restrictions apply • Closed shoes must be worn – no thongs, open sandals or high wedge/stiletto shoes • Students must have their midriffs, stomachs and lower backs covered (whilst standing and

Year 6 car park option If you have older siblings please drop them off FIRST in the main entry drop-off zone, before proceeding past administration to the rear carpark area near the Year 6 facilities. Years 6-12 Parents driving into the campus main entry may use the quick drop-off bay and then carry on to exit onto Bilgoman Road.

Please do not park on either side of Bilgoman Road – except in the marked parking lane. The reason for this is that there is a danger to our students as they then have to walk across the pick up zone, between parked cars, and negotiate two lanes of traffic to their waiting parents. Also, please take care not to obstruct driveways of neighbouring properties along Bilgoman and adjoining streets. Parents are reminded that classes finish at 3.15pm. Please note that students need 5-10 minutes to access lockers before being ready for collection. Please arrange for pick up after 3.25pm. Make a specific time with your student eg 3.25pm or 3.30pm. Early arrival may result in unnecessary blocking which can result in delays for everyone. Dropoff/pickupzoneatthefrontoftheschoolParents please note the drop off / pick up zone at the front of the school. There are now clearly defined bays for parent to use. Please progress to the end bay first, rather than stopping close to the steps. PickupintheafternoonDrive in via the entry and advance to the furthest pick up bay. Wait a fe w minutes only to see whether your student is there for collection. If not, move on. Exit and turn left into Bilgoman Road. Loop around via Marnie Rd or (next right (Gostelow) via McGlew Rd and William Street to approach the entry again from the south. Then left turn into the pick up zone. Hopefully your student will then be there waiting for collection. Thank you to all parents for your support with making the process as safe as possible for our students. Teachers on after school duty have been asked to request parents to please move on, if they are in vehicles that are parked and holding up traffic flow. Your cooperation would be appreciated. Duke of Edinburgh’s Award All Year 9 students have the opportunity to enrol in the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award and undertake community service, recreation and skill development activities. They will also participate in expeditions during Years 9-10 towards achieving the Bronze award level. Students in Years 11-12 are encouraged to progress to the Silver award level. The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, completed by students before the end of Year 12, counts as an endorsed unit that will be included in the Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE) issued at the end of Year 12. Extra-curricular activities Extra-curricular clubs and courses are run when there is a demand and an instructor or facilitator can be found. Fees may need to be charged to cover the cost of the leader, materials and rent for the use of College facilities. See College website for details of the Extra-curricular activities > http://www.helenacollege.wa.edu.au/co-curricular/ Facebook We encourage all parents who use Facebook to Like us on Facebook to stay up to date with events, news, announcements, student achievements and photos. Students can nominate themselves and there can be a secret ballot for the position. The term for Homeroom Representative can be for either a semester or for the year. Elections are held in week 2 of Term One.

Under the Education Act students are required to be at school during term time. To ensure continuous teaching and learning, family holidays during term time are strongly discouraged and parents are requested to arrange family holidays in school holiday breaks. The College is not obliged to provide learning programmes, nor catch-up work when a student is absent, except in the case of illness. Apart from emergencies, written notification requesting leave during term time for students should be addressed to the Principal at least three-four weeks prior to the leave. Please use the form included in the College Attendance Policy ie Student Absence from School for Family Holiday Reasons. The policy and form are available for download via the College website (search policies) and via SEQTA Engage (search policies). Homework In Year 6 homework will be given at an age appropriate level, working to establish a regular homework pattern by the end of the year. By Year 7 a pattern of weekly homework is established. In Years 7-10 it is expected that students will learn to work without supervision for one and a half to two hours each weekday evening. By Year 11, two and a half hours each weekday evening should provide a guide for an average student undertaking a Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE) programme. Study time, including review and revision, is important as well as set homework. See Homework Guidelines Years 6-12 on SEQTA Engage > Documents > search policies or on the College website policies page. Homework Club The Homework Club provides an opportunity for students to access assistance after school in a supportive environment. Teachers and mentors are available and students are encouraged to work together and support each other in their learning. Days and times may be updated early in 2018. When: Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday 3.30pm-4.30pm

and Friday 3.30pm-4.00pm Where: Library 2Who: All students in Years 6-12 Cost: No charge It is not compulsory for students to attend every week, but once students sign up for the day, they will be expected to stay for the hour, unless a signed note from parents or guardians is presented. The teachers keep records of each session, identifying who has attended and the nature of the work, along with any relevant comments. The Homework Club teachers will liaise with relevant teachers of students regarding any concerns that are identified in the Homework Club. House system House spirit is strong at the Glen Forrest Campus. Students are placed in either Cardan (red; racehorse goanna), Kiara (yellow; sulphur crested cockatoo) or Waughul (green; rainbow serpent). The Houses are named after local fauna, with the names derived from the Aboriginal Noongar language. Students from Year 7 upwards are allocated to a homeroom that is aligned with their House. This alignment to Houses will roll up until all homerooms are in House groups. This is to promote House spirit and to further strengthen the students’ overall sense of identity and community. The House t-shirt is a compulsory uniform item that should be worn for a variety of inter- house activities that are held during the year such as swimming, athletics and cross-country carnivals. The House t-shirt may also be worn during physical education lessons. House Captains In 2018 there will be six House Captains, Year 12 students elected to leadership positions to act as mentors to younger students in their House. These student leaders will play a key role during House events and carnivals (at both Glen Forrest and Darlington Campus) to promote House spirit, inclusivity and participation. Elected House Captains are supported by Head of Department – Health & Physical Education to develop their leadership skills. (Communicable) Infectious diseases In the case of all infectious diseases students must be excluded from school. Please advise administration of all instances of infectious diseases affecting your son/daughter. Students may only return to school when they are no longer infectious.   Instrumental Development Programme (IDP) If you have any queries regarding the music instrumental development programme, timetables or wish to change a tutorial time please email Ruth Gallagher, Instrumental Development Programme Coordinator via [email protected] Insurance of property Parents are reminded that the school's property insurance only covers capital items purchased by the school. See College website > Publications > Policies and also SEQTA Engage > Documents > search policies. Protective Behaviours Helena College is committed to ensuring that it is a ‘child safe organisation’. All staff are trained with respect to identifying child abuse and grooming behaviours and are aware of their moral and legal responsibilities to report child abuse. Great care is taken in the recruitment and supervision of all staff and volunteers and the Staff Code of Conduct comprehensively covers the College’s expectations for every employee in relation to Protective Behaviours. All Darlington Campus and Middle School students receive personal safety training using the Helping Hands or Teenagers Guide to Personal Safety programmes developed by Protective Behaviours WA. Personal safety training is further developed in Years 10-12 through Health Education and a guest speaker programme. Parent seminars about child abuse and a Protective Behaviours WA approach to personal safety are offered every two years. If parents/guardians have a concern about a Helena College student, they should report this concern to the Principal or one of the Child Protection Officers (Susan Boyett or Justin Pitt – See page 20). The Chair of Council should be contacted to report a concern that involves the Principal. Reflections Each year the College yearbook presents a visual and written reflection of both the campuses. The aim of Reflections is to illustrate all aspects of Helena College – the learning areas, class photos, sports carnivals, camps, special events and social activities that take place throughout the year. Copies of Reflections are distributed to the youngest student in the family in the last week of Term Four. Copies for the Class of 2018 will be available to collect from the College administration after Awards Night. Archived copies of Reflections from previous years are available via the College website via Reflections Archives. This page is password protected for our community. The report formats used at the College have been developed to convey information about student performance at classwork, student attitudes and work habits, graded student performance against the expected outcomes for the courses, and to provide information to compare student performance against that of their cohort (to meet federal requirements). Additional information about student reporting is available from the Deputy Principal - Curriculum and the Directors of Middle School and Upper School.

1.00pm-1.45pm (Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays) Administration hours 8.15am-4.15pm in term time; 9.00am-4.00pm in holiday periods. Administration is CLOSED in week one of the school holidays following Terms One, Two and Three and until mid-January each year. Dateswillbeadvised in thenewsletterandupdatedon thecalendar. Teachers are on duty from 8.20am-3.35pm each day. The library is open until 4.30pm. Before and after school supervision Parents are advised that if your student arrives at school between 7.45am and 8.00am, they must be signed in at administration by a parent/guardian. Obviously, there are exceptions to this rule if your child has commitments such as swimming, ensemble or sport before school. In the afternoon if your child is not picked up by 3.45pm, he/she must go to administration and wait to be collected by a parent/guardian. The only exception is where students are attending extra-curricular school based activities or using the library, which is open until 4.30pm. At the conclusion of these activities, or when the library closes, all students must be collected promptly from the school grounds. Signing your child in to school prior to 8.00am should only be on an occasional basis, as needed in exceptional circumstances. No student should be arriving at school before 8.00am on a regular basis as there are no organised tutorials, rehearsals or classes prior to this time. It is important to reiterate that any student who arrives between 7.45am and 8.00am must be signed in. If students walk or ride to school, they should not arrive before 8.00am. We understand that some parents may find it difficult to adhere to these guidelines but as a duty of care to all students, teachers and staff at the College it is important that students are not at the College outside these hours. If you have any queries or questions regarding this, please email to Lorelle Bannister, [email protected] who will forward all correspondence to the Principal. Student Council ‘Leadership is not magnetic personality - that can just as well be a glib tongue. It is not ‘making friends and influencing people’ - that is flattery. Leadership is lifting a person’s vision to high sights, the raising of a person’s performance to a higher standard, the building of a personality beyond its normal limitations’. Peter Drucker The Student Council organises various school activities, assemblies and events, supports causes for those in need outside the school and promotes school spirit. In 2018 there will be a new format for the membership and election to a Student Council of Year 12 leaders. These leaders will be mentored by senior staff as per diagram below.
