President’s Message Our membership has been steady at about 230 regular members

for the past several years. The average handicap for our membership is about 21, compared to the national average of about 15. About 19% of our members have a handicap less than 15. Gene Harp was the low handicapper (6.1) and Terry Book was the most improved golfer (32.6 down to an 18.6) this past season. Our reputation as a welcoming and respectful club attracts new members which helps to keep our total membership at a healthy level.

Some highlights of the 2018 golf season were: • A MEMBERS DIRECTORY was again printed and distributed at

the beginning of the season in April. Feedback from members is

that this is an important document produced by the Board to help members network and make plans for playing golf.

• The COMMUNICATIONS PROCESSES via email and website were led by Paul Newman and Mike Lucich. The website improvements, and quick turnaround for game day scores, were the result of efforts by Mike Lucich with support of others interested in communications with the membership. The professional services for website and email services from Elaine Swyt continue to be a valued service to the Men’s Club.

• The NINE-HOLE DIVISION committee members continue to improve the support for 9 hole events; giving all our members a choice for playing 9 or 18. There are 20% of our club members who prefer 9 holes only, and another 23% who prefer 9 or 18. 56% of our members prefer 18 holes only.

• A CLUB BROCHURE was created, which is handed out at the Portland Golf Show and to new residents of Charbonneau to promote golf in the community, as well as explaining the benefits of joining the Men’s Club.

• The INVITATIONAL TOURNAMENT was considered a success under the leadership of Mike Brown and John Meyers who managed teams of volunteers, and especially the work of CWGA army of volunteers in their bright red shirts.

• Golf EDUCATIONAL SEMINARS were developed and hosted by the Men’s Club for the golfing community (men and women) that remain in Charbonneau over the winter months. The feedback from participants was that these are worthwhile and should continue again each winter season.

• The TOURNAMENT COMMITTEE had several challenges coming into the 2018 season. Major tournament activities, namely the Double Elimination Match Play and the

Charbonneau Cup (Eclectic) were re-designed to make them good year long tournaments. Increased communication with monthly notices on the bulletin boards and on the webpage significantly improved the year-long game and tournament schedule. These challenges, and others, were identified by Laurin Larsen at the beginning of the year and successfully addressed through the great volunteers on this committee.

• The GOLF COURSE WAS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION for our events, and more improvements to the courses are planned by Chris and Danny and their staffs for next year. The courses also continue to benefit from the success of the “Geese Guys” program and the tireless efforts of the Tuesday Volunteers, led by Spencer Groshong, who assisted Danny in undertaking course improvements.

• Men’s Club is officially a 501 c(7) CORPORATION registered in the State of Oregon, thanks to the leadership of our club Secretary, Jim Bartlett. Jim will be retiring from the Board of Directors this year, and his advice and presence will be missed. He was often the voice of reason to keep me focused and effective as President. During the winter months, the Board will continue to seek out

and listen to ideas from the members and plan for improvements to golf and social events for 2019. Things we are considering include:

• CHALLENGE CLUBS OF OTHER GOLF COURSES around the valley to match play events. If any member is interested in helping to organize these events, contact John McLain.

• EXPAND THE USE OF GOLF GENIOUS SOFTWARE to generate quick turnaround of game day scores. Mike Lucich will be hosting educational sessions for members to learn more about Golf Genius. Contact Mike if you would like to learn more about helping to enter scores on game days.

• Explore the concept of a SEASON-LONG POINTS system, similar to the USGA FedEx Cup, as the basis of the Charbonneau Cup in 2019.

• COLLECT AND PUBLISH PHOTOS (HEAD SHOTS) so members can view faces to go with names in the directory.

On behalf of the Board of Directors, we hope you all can “play more golf” 2019.

Financial Report The fiscal year for the club was November 1, 2017, through October 31, 2018. The Men’s Club is in good financial shape, with more than adequate cash reserves of about $15,600 after a net loss for the year of $6,800. The Board approved goal for year ending cash reserve is $10,000, which means we have more than adequate reserves to end the year. The net loss was planned for this past year to utilize some of the more than adequate cash reserves to cover the costs on increases in catering, as well as fund special events such as the Hole In One Prize Pool (HIOPP) and the Charbonneau Cup Prize Pool. The budget for next year again plans for a loss to utilize the remainder of the surplus for one more year. Notes for the Budget adopted for fiscal year 2018-2019: • Because we have more than adequate reserves, the Board sees no

need to increase the 2019 annual dues (i.e. $60 or $70). • Major event fees will not increase for 2019 (i.e. $25 or $30). • The Board will continue to host the two free breakfast events that

mark the beginning and ending of the golf season • The Board will continue to fund the HIOPP and the

Charbonneau Cup for one more season The budget forecast is that the current surplus of reserves will be fully utilized by the end of the 2018-2019 year.

Future budgets in 2020 will need to be break even or better. This means, after looking at all the ways to reduce our costs, it is likely that: • Event Fees in future years will be adjusted to fully recover the

costs of catering and prize pools. • Invitational Tournament costs and fees will be adjusted to

produce a small net contribution to the general budget • HIOPP and Charbonneau Cup may once again require entry fees

Current and Future Board Members There are nine members of the Board of Directors, each serving three-year terms, such that three terms expire each year (see table). The nominating committee has proposed three members to fill the expiring terms for the class of 2019-2021: John McLain Mike Brown Bill Moir

Steve Bennett Steve and his wife, Geralyn (Geri) moved to this area in

December 2015. This past winter (2016) they started looking for a golfing group that they could join. They discovered Charbonneau where the people were very welcoming. They encouraged Geri and Steve to join the Men's and Women's clubs which they did. They enjoyed a number of years RV'ing. They loved the traveling and spending winters in the California desert.

He has worked with the Tuesday golf group assisting in everything from cleanup of weeds and tree trimming to helping with the installation of the yardage markers on sprinkler heads for all 27 holes. Mike is also the Landscape Chairman for the Lakeside HOA. Mike has always believed in the integrity of the game of golf, but the main focus should always be the friends and fun we have while playing this wonderful game of golf.

Mike has served the Men’s Club on two different occasions. During his first term he served as Secretary. In 2016, he was reappointed to the Men’s Club Board to complete the term of a resigning board member. Since then he has served as Vice-President, Charbonneau Golf Club, Inc. liaison, Co-Chair and Chair of the Invitational Golf Tournament. He is seeking a full term on the Board.

Director for the Oregon Golf Association for 13 years. He was involved with all aspects of working with OGA member clubs including handicapping, tournaments, course rating, junior golf and rules of golf. These experiences will benefit the Men’s Club in the future. Jim also played in 7 National Championships giving him a unique perspective. To quote Jim “We all want to play as well as we can, but the main focus should be to have fun with golf”.

Laurin Larsen Laurin and his wife, Maureen moved to Charbonneau two years

ago and downsized from a farm on Stafford Road to retirement. They have lived in Wilsonville for 39 years, where they raised their three children and owned the Larsen Farm Nursery. Their nursery was his wife’s business while he was in the photo equipment manufacturing business for thirty years and later in real estate for about 12 years.

Laurin has been actively involved with volunteer activities and organizations throughout his career. Some of these activities include the Board of Directors of the Scandinavian Heritage Foundation, a 35 year member of the Clackamas County Sheriff’s Posse, President of the SW Portland Lions Club, the Photo Marketing Association, various Church groups, and others. Laurin will contribute a variety of golf experiences, organizational skills, and a strong interest in the game of golf, especially here at Charbonneau.

Mike Lucich Mike moved to Charbonneau four years ago after a 25 year career

as a music educator in the State of Hawaii Public School System. He taught band students at Molokai High School and Kailua High School. His final tenure was that of Fine Arts Department Chairman at McKinley High School in downtown Honolulu, where he also

From 2006 to 2014 he was an Adjunct Faculty Member at Marylhurst University, and at Clackamas Community College. John was elected to a 3-year term in October of 2015 and served as Treasurer and President of the Men’s Club during his term. He is seeking a second term on the Board.

John Meyers John and his wife Diane moved from Beaverton to Charbonneau in September of 2011. A particular zeal for startup companies and products would lead to living in Asia and Europe which ultimately led to a public listing on the NASDAQ. He looks forward to contributing to the Men’s Club Board, utilizing his experience and assisting in projects to further benefit the membership.

Bill Moir (nominated) Bill and his wife, Ginny, bought their home in Charbonneau in

2014 as a place to escape the summer heat of Rancho Mirage, California. They decided to sell their winter home in Rancho Mirage in 2017 in order to retire and live year round in the Northwest to be close to grandchildren and their roots (Bill being from Portland and Ginny form Astoria). They have been thrilled with the decision and are dedicated to becoming full time participants in the Charbonneau life style.
