HEARTS TO HOMES 2018 ANNUAL REPORT

OUR MISSIONThe mission of Hearts to Homes is to assist newly independent young adults who have just aged out of foster care. This assistance alleviates some of the stress during the initial transition by providing the essentials to furnish a new home.

By helping to create a more comfortable living environment, we can positively impact the negative statistics of instability, homelessness, incarceration and multi-generational foster care that affect these young adults.

WHY ARE WE NEEDED?A young person typically “ages out” of foster care when they reach the age of 21 without having been adopted or reunited with their family. These youth frequently have few possessions and no means to furnish an apartment. Too often their first apartment consists of a bed, a dresser, and little else. The statistics are discouraging.

11 to 20% will end up homeless.

25 to 50% will have instability in housing.

50% will experience incarceration.

These statistics, and other factors, result in foster youth being at greater risk of losing their own children into foster care, thereby perpetuating the involvement of child welfare to the next generation.

OUR HISTORY 2016 - 2018

March 2016: Hearts to Homes was created as a program of Cardinal McCloskey Community Services.

May 2017: Hearts to Homes expands to our second foster care agency partner, Catholic Guardian Services.

September 2017: Hearts to Homes becomes an independent, 501(c)(3) organization.

January 2018: Hearts to Homes expands to our third agency partner, Rising Ground.

June 2018: Hearts to Homes welcomes our fourth agency partner, The New York Foundling.

“ Too frequently across this nation, youth aging out of foster care are at tremendous risk of being homeless. Hearts to Homes finds that reality to be unacceptable. We value the vision and dedication of the many donors who make Hearts to Homes’ mission possible.”

— Craig Longley, Executive Director, Catholic Guardian Services, Partner

HEARTS TO HOMES 2018 ANNUAL REPORT

OUR IMPACTWith the assistance of our child welfare partners, Hearts to Homes conducts an annual census of recipient stability. We are proud to report that 100% of our Hearts to Homes recipients are stable. They are not homeless or incarcerated, and the recipients, who had children when they aged out, are still parenting their own children. These statistics are considerably different than what is typically experienced by young adults after their transition to independence.

OUR 2019 PLANOur plans for fiscal 2019 include strategic expansions to additional foster care agencies, allowing us to support more youth aging out of care in Westchester County. Funds raised will determine the number of young adults we are able to serve. External factors, such as the supply of affordable housing, must be taken into consideration when timing these expansions. We anticipate furnishing up to 80 apartments for foster youth in the New York City and Westchester County areas in 2019.
