Message from the President From 2018 and until 2022, the CKA/ACK is mobilizing to carry out the activities of the

Vision2022 Strategic Plan. The world of kinesiology is changing. If health professionals are

affected, the CKA/ACK seeks to support its provincial kinesiology associations (PKAs) to defend

the many legislative challenges to the practice of our profession. Your Alliance has positioned

itself to protect the interests of kinesiology, especially with regards to legislation,

reimbursement of services and standards. A more active role at the KinGames was played as a sponsor of the

Academic Challenge - a joint CKA/ACK and PKA marketing initiative to increase awareness of the roles of PKA and

CKA/ACK among students / future kinesiologists and help them start their practice by reiterating the use of the

website: www.kinstartupkit.ca. A second initiative in partnership with the OKA was carried out by participating in the

CLHIA Conference gathering more than 250 insurers responsible for the management of benefit claims. An even

larger program and promotional tool kit were developed for the National Kinesiology Week and the National Health

and Fitness Day. We also had great success with the Osteoporosis Campaign launched as part of National

Kinesiology Week. All communication tools established over the years and the new coherent marketing plan have

helped to enhance the image of Kinesiology and CKA/ACK. The Financial Report now shows with transparency that

CKA/ACK has undertaken special projects while ensuring good management practices.

Our Executive Director, France Martin, supported the Board of Director throughout the year with professionalism

and devotion to making things happen. I would also mention the contributions of members of the Board who have

demonstrated integrity and judgment in their decision and conviction to represent you, no matter your vocation or

your location. Volunteers have given you their time without compensation..

As chair of the Board of directors, and in this last year of my presidency I thank you for the support you have

entrusted in me. A special thought is for Mathias Golob, one of the founding members of the CKA/ACK, for the many

years spent and believing in the restructuration of the CKA/ACK as he now passes on his position of Past President to

me. Thank you to our partners, sponsors and provincial kinesiology associations. I leave the CKA/ACK proud of all

that has been accomplished and very reassured by the solid implementation of the # KinVision2020 strategic plan. I

hope you are too. The strength of our Alliance is the sum of the support and efforts of everyone. What new trails to

explore! Thank you all.

CKA President

#KinVision2022 Strategic Plan Accomplishments

Jan 2018: From #KinVision2022 Strategic Plan, 2 action plans drawn –

Coms and R&D

Actions identified in the plans were accomplished in working

committees and prioritized by the Board of Directors.

A MARKETING PLAN & NEW BRAND: The CKA/ACK has put wheels in motion and has achieved another

milestone – the establishment of a Marketing Plan & New Brand in

conjunction with its #KinVision2022 Strategic Plan. The CKA / ACK had

mandated UpHouse Inc. from Manitoba to help in defining a new brand

for Kinesiology and provide marketing strategies until December 2019.

The New Brand has been incorporated in many of the visuals used in

activities. The CKA/ACK has provided new branding material for Kins to

use: i.e. business cards, KinWordMark, etc.

NEW BRANDING - CREATING A CONSISTENT KINESIOLOGY STORY TO TELL:

To help people understand Kinesiology, to help guide its development and focus our marketing efforts, we

have created a consistent Kinesiology story to tell:

Kinesiologists are to people the human movement specialists that use science and research to offer

movement as medicine to any person with a health or fitness goal, in Canada, who wants a hands-on,

personalized approach, in an era where many practitioners spend less time with each patient and machines

are performing more of the treatments....

Governance Accomplishments

Since 2017, the many actions to accomplished from the #KinVision2022 Strategic Plan were made possible with

the help of nearly– 15 Kins newly included in committees:

1. Communications Committee: Marketing Plan, Sponsors/partnership vs. revenue generation,

eNewsletter, Events, i.e. National Kinesiology Summit, KinWeek, KinGames, NHFD, Universities CCUPEKA,

EIMC, WHO, CSEP, ACSM etc

2. Business R & D Committee: Lobby –Taxation, Insurance benefits, Legislation, etc

Alexandre Paré and Darren MacDonald for your devotion to the CKA for many years

Mandate given to a committee to study the possibility of a Prevention of Abuse Policy and consultation with our

lawyer to review in light of our ByLaws, our Policy & Procedures and the province legislation to our profession.

BC's provincial auto insurer, ICBC, has included kinesiology services as a defined service under the motor vehicle act as of April 2019. It used to be that Kinesiology would be a "may pay". BCAK have been successful in discussions with ICBC on the process and requirements will be for kinesiologists.

The BC Public Auto Insurance has made it mandatory that kinesiologists working for them must be a member of

BCAK, they are also requiring Kins to attend an educational program on the many reports one must complete

when working for them. A huge success in raising the awareness and credibility of our profession.

BCAK invites everyone to use the three new videos:

The AKA 2018 AGM was affected by the snow storm on March 3rd in Calgary. On June 14,

the AKA held a Special Meeting of the Association. They were able to resolve several motions;.

AKA made some great inroads on simplifying the process of making changes to the bylaws which

represents an important step in our ongoing project of overhauling the bylaws in an effort to modernize and

revitalize the AKA.

As the great project as the AKA moves forward, the board of directors was looking to fill several volunteer roles

on committees that would support the process of building the bylaws, policies and procedures that would help

position the AKA as a premiere professional association.

The AKA also is currently looking for a Nominations Committee, Finance Committee (to help create financial

policy and procedures), Discipline Committee (develop policy and procedures around enforcing the standards of

practice and ethics), Standards of Practice Committee (develop standards of practice).

The AKA board of directors have been busy at work towards planning out 2019 actions

The AKA distributed a renewal communication in the Fall. The AKA encourages members to take advantage of

all of the benefits available through their membership ( https://www.albertakinesiology.ca/cpages/discounts).

AKA must have done something right as the Star Edmonton reported that " Alberta doctors are 'prescribing'

gym memberships and patients are reaping the health benefits"

The NBKA AGM was held November 3rd 2018, its Annual General Meeting at the

Fredericton Campus of the University of New Brunswick for continuing education and

networking, including a Conference Day Speaker;

NBKA built more partnership with the 2 universities who in fact will be speaking at AGM; NBKA has signed on 2

new corporate sponsors UPAC and Société Musette;

NBKA has created a binder of action items and roles of each Board of Directors members in line with their

ByLaws as a tool since there is a frequent turnover of BofDir Members; and NBKA is involved in reinitiating the

Atlantic Provinces Taskforce Unit;

The NBKA was active in promoting the renewals and recruiting new members.

It also had invited people to rethink their mobility through a seminar on active transport « Winter Cycling

Seminar » and reminded them of tips and fun ideas for making physical activity a bigger part of your life.

A toolkit was created last year for New Brunswickers. It contains information, worksheets and motivational

stories that will help you understand how becoming more active can improve physical fitness, as well as your

mental, social, spiritual and emotional health.

Wellness NB has created this great website letting you know how to get active in your community! Want to

know what's going on? Interested in getting active? Check it out at www.wellnessnb.ca/resources/active-aging-

in-nb/

The NLKA has focused on a new image that signifies positive

change. The Association has redesign its logo and the plan in the fall is to

revise our website.

The Association had met with Memorial University's Kinesiology

Faculty with the goal of answering how both groups can advance the

profession to the students and public. One of the first actions was to develop a joint Lecture Series in the Fall.

The NLKA's membership in 2018 has increased probably due to creating and attending increased student

relation events, i.e. Memorial University Speaker Series (one per month), NLKA notes that they are losing

members to CSEP: and the NLKA AGAM will be held on Nov 17th with student workshops

All current Board members have returned and a new Board position has been filled. KIN Week had several

successful activities with public education and student engagement sessions. The new logo has helped

invigorate marketing, branding and awareness. In the New Year, a Planning day is scheduled to formulate key

objectives/goals and details on how they are going to achieve these in 2019

The Nova Scotia Kins have moved forward with the creation of a provincial

kinesiology association, as eight people has formed the new board and registered the

corporation under RJSC.

Kinesiologists of Nova Scotia were excited to announce that the Kinesiology Association of Nova Scotia

(KANS), is now officially on board as a provincial association within the Canadian Kinesiology Alliance! Led by

Marki Wong as President, new activities were organized regularly to recruit members and promote the new

association.

CKA representations with NHO and others Accomplishments

Differences between the CKA / ACK, CSEP and CATA :The CKA made available a document to attempt to help

and clarify the three professions of Kinesiologist, Exercise Physiologist and Athletic Therapist who are

becoming more distinct and differ from one another by their scope of practice, their educational requirements

for certification and their recognition by legal authorities and/or other organizations.

Thank you to the following NHOs who have participated in the 2018 National Kinesiology week by supporting

the event:

The CKA / ACK wishes to help the university community to communicate

with its affiliated kinesiologists. The new chronicle in the CKA eNewsletter will

eventually feature articles, abstract of research papers and other news from

CCUPEKA and from universities.

Only one chronicle was provided by Dr. Rene Murphy :The AGM of the Canadian Council of University Physical

Education and Kinesiology Administrators (CCUPEKA) took place in Thunder Bay, hosted by Lakehead

University, from June 18-21. There was very good discussion on accreditation standards, development of

advocacy pieces, a professional development session on conflict resolution as well as a presentation by the CKA

Executive Director. The new Executive was elected and Dr. Kerry Mummery (University of Alberta) will be

President for the 2018-19 year. The next.

The Executive Director of the CKA, France A, Martin attended the semi-annual meeting December 10-12, 2018

in Thunder Bay, ON:

o to open a channel of communications between both organizations and to collaborate in reaching out to

students. Both organizations see that there are lots of ways in which CKA and CCUPEKA can collaborate

and share information for our students (undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate) and for practicing

kinesiologists.

o to presenting CKA KinVision Strategic Plan and Action Plans including the new website KinStartUpKit.ca

dedicated to informing students, and discussions continued with the CCUPEKA group.

The CKA / ACK was represented by Hardip (Happy) Jhaj at 2 Exercise is Medecine

Canada (EIMC) meetings. Happy reported that the decision to approve that Kinesiologist be

given recognition for Level 1 (Personal trainer) and 2 (able to work with symptomatic clients)

has been delayed since one EIMC member has requested more information namely a Fact Sheet with the

following: Insurance benefit and coverage difference between Prolink and CSEP; Credentials, Scope of practice;

proof of practicum; cartology on density of Kins in each province.

The CKA / ACK also participated in EIMC Think Tank where a position paper will be presented to politicians

requesting changes-in-Law to legislated physical activities to help increase healthy lifestyle.

An action plan was established – short term, longer-term objectives. Thus, to be continued in the coming

months.

This year's CLHIA 2018 conference was held in St. John's Newfoundland on May 8-10th,

and played host to over 200 insurers and claims associates.

The CKA / ACK in partnership with OKA has participated in the tradeshow and

formally present as speaker of the presentation sessions, plenaries and special events.

They joined other NHOs such as the Canadian Massage Therapy Alliance, Canadian Chiropractors Association,

Ontario Association of Osteopaths and other healthcare professionals as exhibitors. It was a prime spot to meet

awareness of the profession by aligning organizations, such as CLHIA, with our goals.

now be repeated annually. As governing bodies of Kinesiology in Canada, wish to guide, inform and influence

the decision makers of insurance companies. In the workshop titled "With a kin, you can…." Kinesiology

Services in extended health care benefit packages", the participant will be informed of the profession of

kinesiology, its practice and how we can help in managing claims for benefits reimbursed from major insurance

companies. What are the tools available to insurers to validate claims? Why should benefits be reimbursed?

How much can be saved from including physical activity as benefit in a plan?

Dr. Boushel, Professor and Director of the School of Kinesiology at UBC, will discuss: Why is exercise so

important for physical health? The intriguing, powerful biological effects of exercise on the body that promote

(and necessary for) health; What are the economic implications of physical inactivity? The population and

individual level data on physical activity/inactivity and the implications for the workforce/workplace; What

approaches can we take to promote wellness in the workplace? The change approaches needed in policy related

to healthcare, community and institutional levels and strategic initiative ideas in the workplace.

For the 2018NKW, new NHO relations were created with Osteoporosis Canada and the International Diabetes

WHO launches Global Action Plan on Physical Activity

In june 2018, WHO Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus launched the

new "WHO Global action plan on physical activity and health 2018-2030: More active people for

a healthier world."

"Being active is critical for health. But in our modern world, this is becoming more and

more of a challenge, largely because our cities and communities aren't designed in the right

ways," said Dr Tedros. "We need leaders at all levels to help people to take the healthier step.

This works best at city level, where most responsibility lies for creating healthier spaces."

Fact Sheet on Kinesiology in Canada

Produced to provide a brief overview of the Kinesiology profession. It includes information such as: Designation

History of Kinesiology in Canada.

It's been a long time that one had taken a historical look back at the development of the profession of

Kinesiology in Canada and ultimately, culminating in the development of the CKA we can recognize that it has

actually happened in a relatively short period of time. The CKA / ACK Newsletter of 2000 was pulled out - the

History of Kinesiology in Canada and how it all began for CKA / ACK and one PKA at a time.

New Definitions & New Texts

One major challenge undertaken by the CKA was to review definitions and texts used to define the scope of practice, "what is kinesiology", "who are Kinesiologists", "where to find Kinesiologists" and "the structure of kinesiology across Canada".

The CKA is nearly finished the four major texts, and has worked hard to make sure they are "harmonized and inclusive" of kinesiology across Canada. The texts are to be used in the legislation process for PKAs, by Insurance companies to define the range within the scope of practice and as informative & promotional texts on websites.

Once finalized, the CKA Board of Directors will consult with stakeholders and invite PKAs to review them and send comments before making them final. These are designed as live texts as the profession evolve. PKAs may adapt them to meet their provincial laws and bylaws as long as the changes respect the basis of the text.

The new texts will be available 2019

Professional Designation: Goal to reduce confusion!

Across Canada there is a wide range of terms used to represent professional kinesiologists, this causes

ambiguity and confusion to the public, insurers and health professionals.

For example, the following terms are used across our country:

Practicing (BC), Professional (AB), Registered (MB & ON), Accredited

(QC), Certified (NB and NL), Affiliated (NS, PEI, SK, CKA).

The CKA's Strategic Plan states a goal to promote kinesiology across Canada. Therefore, the CKA has had an

open discussion with PKAs to reduce the number of professional titles of Kins to two: one when legislated and

one when not legislated. Following up to the discussion, the CKA BOD met in January and considered the

positions of each PKAs as per information gathered on how this would affect them, their bylaws or any

provincial laws restrictions.

The Board of Directors has gained the support of PKAs to use the designation title "Kinesiologist" without any

qualifiers where possible, and with a qualifier when bounded by their Bylaws or Provincial Laws, for example to

distinguish membership categories.

NHFD

2018 NHFD was held with no PR campaign. CKA had no means to measure if Kins have used the marketing tools

made available.

The CKA invited Kins to Get Ready to GET UP, GET OUT and GET ACTIVE on National Health and Fitness Day,

Saturday June 2nd, 2018, by organizing an event, to reach out to meet people ready to be active. Kinesiologists

across Canada joined in activities in their communities. Promotional material could be found on CKA Website.

This year there was a shift in momentum, for NHFD, a grassroots movement to make Canada the fittest nation

on earth. With 407 communities who have proclaimed the first Saturday in June, NHFD, or otherwise supporting

the initiative, there has been an increase of over 30% in support for the movement. More than 80 municipalities

organized events. Where were the Kins? Hopefully being involved in the 10 of Alberta, 16 in British Columbia, 5

in Manitoba, 30 in Ontario, 6 in Quebec, and up to 3 in Nova Scotia, Saskatchewan and Newfoundland.

National KinWeek - November 12-18 2018

This year's National Kinesiology Week was officially added to the Canadian

Government's Health Promotions Calendar of Events.

The new NKW branding was also launched. Hexfit Solutions' website has remained the

designated Kin Week website and has been an important promotional tool for

Kinesiologists to promote their events.

The 2018 National Kinesiology Week presented by Hexfit was in support of Osteoporosis Month and World

Diabetes Day (IDF), and was supported by ParticipAction, GLA:D™ by Bones & Joints, CCUPEKA, EIMC and was

in collaboration with BCAK, AKA, MKA, OKA, FKQ, NBKA, NLKA.

NKW reached 1 million people for a second year in a row.

CKA acknowledged the Let's Get Moving report, the latest initiative from the Government of Canada to create a

common goal where all Canadians move more and sit less, more often, and acknowledged the ParticipACTION

Report

Some significant results:

o Theme: "Move better, live better" The 2018 NKW Campaign supported November Osteoporosis month

and November 14th World Diabetes Day, bringing awareness of Kinesiology in performing community

outreach activities in November.

o Activities: 47 activities (12% increase from 2017) carried out by Kinesiologists and eight PKAs: meetings,

seminars, webinars, physical activities and much more highlighting the initiative and the creativity of

Kinesiologists when it comes to make the world "move".

To help Kinesiologists in understanding the difference between the insurance programs offered on the market,

CKA / ACK produced a document that highlights of a brief analysis of Insurance Programs offered by CKA / ACK

vs CSEP vs CATA vs. KinInsurance.ca

CSEP Insurance Programs vs. CKA (PROLINK) 1. CSEP bundles insurance premiums into their membership fees

vs. CKA and PKAs which separate insurance through PROLINK for greater transparency. 2. CSEP does not

automatically include coverage for Kinesiology. It is an optional package to be purchased for $85 in addition to

the standard PLI coverage costs included in CSEP membership: For example, $2M...

How a Kin Can Help Clients Get Reimbursed? – New website section

Kinesiologists work in many different settings and provide a variety of services. Legislation of health services is

different from one province to another. The context in which Kins are providing services helps determine the type of

documentation required and how invoices are prepared and submitted.

In a new section of CKA / ACK 's website, Kin can now find information on who can issue receipts, what should be on

receipts, what to tell clients when they request Kin’s help in getting kinesiology services reimbursed

Insurer and Claims managers are now verifying the status of Kinesiologists before accepting to reimburse the client

for the Kin services. Another success in raising awareness and credibility to our profession.

Guide to Legislation

The CKA Strategic Plan included many tactics to raise awareness about kinesiology in Canada. Many of these tactics

were linked to the Kinesiologists becoming regulated health professionals in as many provinces as possible. For

example, in order to have taxes removed from kinesiology services, kinesiologists must be legislated in at least 3-5

provinces. With this in mind, the CKA R&D Committee decided to create a Guide to Legislation that will be provided

to PKAs.

This guide will include information and steps to begin the process of regulation in each province. This project will be

ready for publication in late spring 2019. The purpose of this Guide is to offer PKAs a practical guide in which, for each

province, with a step-by-step plan to legislation, including a list of governmental agencies and ministers to contact,

sample letters to use, and information to successfully begin a legislation process in each province (which could take

between 5 to 10 years).

The CKA has mandated the Armstrong Group to create a Guide to Legislation in conjunction with CKA's

#KinVision2022 Strategic Plan to develop services and programs that enhance the capacity of Provincial Kinesiology

The CKA Launched a New Tool for Students

On March 21st, 2018 – As part of the 2018 KinGames –

Kinesiology Games - from March 22nd to 24th in Edmonton's

University of Alberta, the CKA / ACK launched #KinStartUpKit ,

a website dedicated to helping students of Kinesiology and

Physical Activity as they enter the work force or continue further studies. That's why #KinStartUpKit is a great tool

for undergraduates and graduates to get started as Kinesiologists. The CKA / ACK, together with its partner Hexfit

Solutions, invited students to take the time to better understand how Kinesiology is practiced in Canada and thus

help students achieve their career goals.

Advocacy CURRENT LEGISLATION

Many Kinesiologist have been watching, with interest, developments by the Ontario Government and particularly

those impacting the field of health care. For some time prior to the provincial election COKO was made aware that

the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care intended to implement a major "modernization" of the legislative and

regulatory framework governing health care professions. Work has been underway in the Ministry for many months

researching models of governance in other jurisdictions. Certainly, it was the intent to achieve a model of governance

for health care professions which would increase accountability, simplify regulation, reduce the overall costs of

governance and provide a variety of regulatory levels for professions. It also indicated that the number of regulatory

colleges (26) seemed excessive especially in comparison to other jurisdictions.

As we look towards the future, there will be changes in the structure of the College of Kinesiologists of Ontario along

with other health profession regulators, it is our hope that these changes do not impact the fact that Kinesiology is a

legislated profession. CKA supports OKA and COKO in their efforts to work on behalf of Kinesiologists

As the CKA / ACK turns this strategic plan into an action plan, it will be faced with challenges and significant

limitations. For example, CKA / ACK will continue to support PKAs in their effort to become legislated but can

only act as a hub of information for the PKAs. To achieve its objectives, the CKA / ACK will require a strong

collaboration from the PKAs, especially when actions must be initiated at the provincial level. The CKA / ACK

will continue to increase public awareness of the kinesiology profession, create more partnerships and links

with other National Health Professions, and encourage the public to request kinesiology services. By 2022, the

public will recognize the profession in stride with other entities. For this to be successful, Kinesiologists must

get involved in their communities – one small step at a time for kinesiology, one giant leap for our profession!

2019 Action Plan

The CKA/ACK is very pleased to report that wheels are in motion, and picking up speed, as we head towards

achieving the 2nd year of the KinVision2022 Strategic Plan 2019 to do list.

Two action plans were drafted from the #KinVision2022 Strategic Plan in the 2 sectors of Communications and
