VisionChunky Move’s vision is to be a catalyst to transform contemporary dance practice in Australia by inspiring and developing artists, engaging audiences and making vital and extraordinary work.
Using contemporary Australian culture, social commentary and the tension between community and the individual as its springboard, Chunky Move’s artistic vision is driven by an investigation into the multifaceted possibilities of the body and its relationship to place, context and environment.
ValuesOur core values underpin everything about the Chunky Move way of working:
• Encouraging individual responsibility
• Nurturing potential
• Pushing boundaries
• Advocacy for our community
• Efficiency and maximising resources
• Intellectual rigour and discourse
• Curiosity, creative risk and exploration
MissionChunky Move is an artist-led company that exists for two interconnected reasons:
• To create works of international standard that celebrate risk and invite the audience to constantly redefine what contemporary dance can be
• To build sustainable career pathways for dance artists to fuel their own bold future.
Chunky Move constantly seeks to redefine what is or what can be contemporary dance in an ever-evolving Australian culture. Our work is diverse in form and content encompassing productions for the stage, as well as site specific, new-media and installation work.

6 2018 Annual Report
As 2018 drew to a close, we reflected on a vibrant year for the company, alive in fulfilling our objective to constantly seek to redefine what is or what can be contemporary dance in an ever-evolving Australian culture.
The year opened with Accumulation, a curated energising program by Artistic Director, Anouk van Dijk featuring a swathe of acclaimed local choreographers and dancers as part of the NGV Triennial. Creation of new works by Anouk continued throughout the year, with the development and presentation of the dynamic Common Ground and the development of Traces, a multi-media collaboration between Anouk van Dijk and Ian Strange.
In 2018, we continued to expand the reach of the company, and Australian contemporary dance, regionally, nationally and internationally thought presentations of ANTI–GRAVITY in Utrecht
CHAIR’SREPORT
(Netherlands) and Complexity of Belonging in Rotterdam, Groningen, Bruges, Amsterdam and Kerkrade (Netherlands/Belgium). It is a source of pride to the company and the Board that audiences around Australia and around the world have the opportunity to experience our bold and distinct works. We are grateful for the support from Creative Victoria, the Australia Council for the Arts and the Department of Communications and the Arts for making this possible.
Importantly Chunky Move has continued to play a significant role in developing artists, the art form and the community of individuals that enable productions to become reality. Next Move 11 saw the presentation of new works by Lauren Langlois and Joel Bray. Both works received positive peer and media review and we are tremendously proud of Next Move’s capacity to raise the profile of exciting new voices in Australian dance.
Anouk van Dijk’s One Body One Career proved again to be an in-demand workshop for professional dancers from across the globe. This unique intensive is a valuable addition to Chunky Move’s comprehensive public program. In 2018, we integrated the coordination of our professional and public class scheduling in-house through creation of a dedicated new role. This has incrementally seen attendances and impact grow.
As the company’s vibrant year of activity drew to a close, so too did it draw close to the Artistic leadership of Anouk van Dijk. Over the past 7 years Anouk introduced a fresh perspective on contemporary dance to Melbourne and to Australia, whilst continuing Chunky Move’s legacy of supporting the development of artists and leading important cultural conversations through our work. The year also marked the moving on of Executive Director Vanessa Pigrum, and long-serving Company Producer, Hillary Coyne. I am grateful for the lasting impact of these leaders in their field.
The Board embarked on the search for new artistic leadership for the company in the latter part of the year, with an Expression of Interest process that brought forward inspiring and energising conversations and the confidence that Australia has many capable hands to support growth and continuity in the prevalence of contemporary dance.
After a rigorous process it was with delight that we announced the appointment of Antony Hamilton and Kristy Ayre as joint CEOs of the company, who are joined by Freya Waterson who will work closely with Antony on his major works and lead the national and international touring program.
Antony is without doubt one of Australia’s most exciting choreographers—his work is in national and international demand, and his unique approach to making dance fuses artistic disciplines and creates new possibilities for contemporary dance. Kristy brings the perspective of a dancer together with the strategic skills of a cultural leader and advocate for dance practice in Australia.
Another vibrant year beckons. We know we wouldn’t be where we are without the support of our individual donors, collaborating artists, partners, class participants, audiences and the incredible individuals who have and do work at the company and on our Board. I thank each of you hugely.
I am excited about what 2019 and a new era of leadership for this flagship company will bring.

In August of 2018, after seven years at the helm of Chunky Move, Artistic Director Anouk van Dijk announced her decision to step down.
In her tenure, Van Dijk premiered her debut work as Artistic Director, An Act of Now, at Sidney Myer Music Bowl in 2012. The production went on to win The Age Critics’ Award for best new Australian work in the Melbourne Festival. For the company
ARTISTIC DIRECTOR Anouk van Dijk
she has since created 247 Days and Embodiment 1:1:1 in 2013, gentle is the power and Complexity of Belonging in 2014, Depth of Field in 2015, Rule of Thirds and L U C I D in 2016, Anti-Gravity in 2017, and Accumulation and Common Ground in 2018.
“Leading Chunky Move has been an enormous honour, and truly one of the most important and meaningful experiences of my career.
True to our mission, all of my work with the team at Chunky Move has sought to expand the boundaries of what is traditionally considered dance. I have taken works outside of the regular performance spaces, many of them have involved artists from different disciplines, and all of my projects have strived for a unique and audacious artistic premise.
Besides pursuing my artistic interests, it has been equally important to me to build on the organisation’s reputation as an artistic hub for choreographers, performers and artistic collaborators that not only excels artistically, but also reflects the diversity of Australia’s society on stage.
I’m incredibly thankful to the Melbourne audiences, who have welcomed my work so warmly. My deepest gratitude goes out to the many talented artists that I’ve worked with, in particular the dancers. It has been a privilege to witness a new generation of extraordinarily talented dance artists come to fruition, and it has been an honour and great inspiration to guide them, to create with them, and to learn so much in return.” - Anouk van Dijk
“I SEE CHUNKY MOVE AS A PORTAL FOR PEOPLE TO GO IN AND OUT. IT’S SUCH A POWERFUL VEHICLE FOR THE DEVELOPMENT OF AUSTRALIAN ART.” Anouk van Dijk, Dance Australia, Issue 221 April/May 2019.

2018 PROGRAM REPORT
Exclusively for NGV Melbourne, Chunky Move was commissioned to create Accumulation, an immersive dance take over of the Gallery as part of the free Triennial EXTRA program 19 – 24 January.
Curated and commissioned by Anouk van Dijk, we presented five short new works created by Anouk van Dijk, Antony Hamilton, Thomas E. S. Kelly and Prue Lang. The works explored human rituals and the transient relationships between people, places and objects through a gradual gathering of eclectic dance interventions.

Choreographer Anouk van Dijk evokes the birth of ballet in a modern milieu, as two of Australia’s most sought after dancers go move-for-move, through to the intense endgame. Tara Jade Samaya (ANTI—GRAVITY, Chunky Move) and Richard Cilli (CounterMove, Sydney Dance Company) perform a unique duel that lights the fuse on equality and betrayal.
An intricate encounter and evocative duet, Common Ground is a journey inside the multi-faceted relationships we build with the world around us, the relationships we build with each other and where we find common ground to stand on.

This durational performance Traces was rehearsed and shot in one week in October, and has been edited into two films: a durational film for the gallery, capturing the slow, but dramatic transformation of the space and the bodies, and a short dance film from the perspective of subjective experience of time.

Interior is a collaboration between artists Ian Strange and Chunky Move’s Anouk van Dijk examining the intersection between their respective art forms: visual arts and dance.
This collaboration resulted in two outcomes in 2018: a three-week creative development with dancers in June and the creation of a 45min film shot in October.
The concept built from the Interior development was for a simplified idea: interacting with a giant stack of charcoaled wood, a team of dancers transforms a pristine white space into the burnt ruins of a civilisation. The charcoaled beams leave black traces on everything and everyone, turning the white floor into a giant painter’s canvas, where the dancers’ actions and imprints become the artwork.

ONE BODY ONE CAREER Countertechnique Intensive
Initiated and curated by Anouk van Dijk, the sixth Australian edition of the One Body One Career Countertechnique Intensive (OBOC) was again a huge success. The intensive brought together around 50 dance artists from all over Australia, New Zealand, Asia, Europe and North America, to evaluate their own practice, exchange ideas and dance their hearts out, offering great network opportunities for dancers.
Over the years, eight Australian dancers who have attended the intensive regularly have also become certified Countertechnique teachers, and they now teach all over Australia, New Zealand and parts of Asia, sharing their knowledge with an increasing number of contemporary dance companies and tertiary education programs, both locally, interstate and overseas.

Dharawungara by Joel Bray (Complexity of Belonging) is a collision of rituals. Following his successful work Biladurang, the audience is invited to reimagine the theatre as a ceremonial ground of light and sound, as Joel explores how to breath life into this Wiradjuri rite he has only ever read about. Naretha Williams joins Bray onstage as songwoman, and her driving beats conjure the space around us.

Review of Operations
In February 2018 the Board of Directors approved an annual budget with a projected surplus of $1,939 to undertake a year of new works creation, international touring and the presentation of a major new work in Melbourne. During the year quarterly budget reviews reforecast the end of year result to a deficit owing to increased core costs as a result of staff changes and the recruitment drive for a new leadership team. The addition of a new project late in the year also drove the budget into deficit with the Board approving the use of reserves to cover these costs.
At the November Board Meeting the projected deficit was the $30k investment in the additional project. The year-end result was significantly better than projected due to staff role vacancies and unspent salaries, unspent project contingencies, increased government project funding for touring and a number of small savings in overheads across the core budget.
Directors’ Report (continued)
To achieve these objectives, the entity has adopted the following strategies:
• Make new works that redefine contemporary dance in collaboration with the best artists across a range of disciplines.
• Increase the audience for contemporary dance and build the Chunky Move brand.

Independent Auditor’s Report to the Members of Chunky Move Limited A.C.N. 080 509 799
Auditor’s name and signature
I have audited the accompanying financial report of Chunky Move Limited, which comprises the statement of financial position as at 31 December 2018, the statement of comprehensive income, statement of changes in equity and statement of cash flows for the year then ended, notes comprising a summary of significant accounting policies and other explanatory information, and the directors’ declaration.
Directors’ Responsibility for the Financial Report
The directors of the company are responsible for the preparation of the financial report that gives a true and fair view in accordance with Australian Accounting Standards – Reduced Disclosure Requirements and the Corporations Act 2001 and for such internal control as the directors determine is necessary to enable the preparation of the financial report that is free from material misstatement, whether due to fraud or error.
Auditors' Responsibility
My responsibility is to express an opinion on the financial report based on my audit. I have conducted my audit in accordance with Australian Auditing Standards. Those standards require that I comply with relevant ethical requirements relating to audit engagements and plan and perform the audit to obtain reasonable assurance whether the financial report is free from material misstatement.
An audit involves performing procedures to obtain audit evidence about the amounts and disclosures in the financial report. The procedures selected depend on the auditor’s judgment, including the assessment of the risks of material misstatement of the financial report, whether due to fraud or error. In making those risk assessments, the auditor considers internal control relevant to the company’s preparation of the financial report that gives a true and fair view in order to design audit procedures that are appropriate in the circumstances, but not for the purpose of expressing an opinion on the effectiveness of the entity’s internal control. An audit also includes evaluating the appropriateness of accounting policies used and the reasonableness of accounting estimates made by the directors, as well as evaluating the overall presentation of the financial report.
I believe that the audit evidence I have obtained is sufficient and appropriate to provide a basis for my audit opinion.
Independence
In conducting my audit, I have complied with the independence requirements of the Corporations Act 2001. I confirm that the independence declaration required by the Corporations Act 2001, which has been given to the directors of Chunky Move Limited, would be in the same terms if given to the directors as at the time of this auditor’s report.
Opinion
In my opinion, the financial report of Chunky Move Limited is in accordance with the Corporations Act 2001, including:
(i) giving a true and fair view of the company’s financial position as at 31 December 2018 and of its performance for the year ended on that date; and
(ii) complying with Australian Accounting Standards – Reduced Disclosure Requirements and the Corporations Regulations 2001.
