Making History & Changing

LivesIt’s a pleasure to report on a successful 120th anniversary year for the

Visiting Nurse Association of Northern NJ and reflect on other milestones

in its long, distinguished history.

I’ve had the privilege of serving as the VNA’s CEO and President for more

than two decades. Throughout my tenure, I’ve embraced opportunities

to collaborate on both small and large-scale initiatives—formally and

informally—with board members, sta, volunteers, community leaders,

donors and clients.

Collectively, our dedication, vision and hard work have advanced the

VNA’s mission of caring and positively impacted countless lives. In fact,

the phrase “many are one” comes to mind. With the help of many, this

organization has withstood the test of time, expanded its services to

eectively address the evolving needs of its constituents and significantly

extended its geographic reach.

I’m very proud to have been part of many influential, diverse achievements

in recent years and I invite all who’ve supported the VNA to join me

in celebrating this milestone anniversary. I also ask for your continued,

unwavering support because the need for high-quality home care has never

been greater and it remains on the incline.

Thank you for being part of our stellar, winning team! Together, let’s

continue to make a dierence and celebrate more historic VNA milestones!

A Milestone of Caring & Community SupportThe VNA’s 120th anniversary is a milestone for our entire community

because its journey of caring has evolved with local needs and been

sustained by the incredible support of many throughout its history. It’s

appropriate for all of us to join in this celebration since, along with many

of our ancestors, we’ve contributed to the VNA’s success.

Ever since some philanthropic area residents came together in 1898 to

form the VNA, home care needs have steadily increased and become more

complex. Fortunately, VNA has remained in touch with those trends, kept

pace with them and emerged as a dependable, trusted home care resource.

I’m honored to serve in a leadership role with this wonderful organization.

I’m also committed to prudent stewardship of its legacy to ensure that high

caliber home care remains readily available to us and future generations.

On behalf of all who benefited from VNA’s services last year, thank you

for your trust, confidence, and generosity. With our collective unwavering

support, the VNA will continue to lead the way in home care and brighten

the lives of area residents for many years to come.

Cynthia Harriman Donor & Special Events Committee Member

“From the moment we were introduced to

VNA through my involvement with TWIG 21 (a

philanthropic group that supports VNA), both my

husband (Ed Prendeville, a trustee) and I became

immersed in the organization. At VNA, we’ve found an organization

that’s doing important work eciently, free of waste and excess.

We’re also very impressed with the VNA’s leaders. They’re leading

the charge for better access to high-quality home care with passion,

enthusiasm, professionalism and sheer love.”

Laura Page-Greifinger

Donor & Member, Board of Trustees

“I’ve devoted my career to developing processes

that improve post-acute care nationwide, so I’m in

a unique, informed position to assess the caliber of

home care agencies, skilled nursing facilities and

hospices. The VNA stands out because it consistently puts patients

first, delivers exceptional quality and achieves excellent patient

satisfaction ratings. VNA leaders also share my belief that sta

education and mentoring results in better patient care.”

Dale Calvert

Donor & Special Events Committee Member

“Witnessing the impact that VNA sta and

volunteers were making on a daily basis inspired

me to community service several years ago. This

VNA has provided an ever-increasing level of

care, eciency and professionalism to the community while always

honoring its original mission of compassionate home care established

in 1898. Also, through the experiences of my 97-year-old mother and

my own family, I am acutely aware that high-quality home care makes

a dierence.”

With the support of community members like you, the VNA can sustain its 120-year tradition of caring. Your tax-deductible gift will be put to work locally to eciently deliver high-quality home care services. Every donation is meaningful and makes a dierence in the lives of those who rely on us for essential services.

Why I Give...Community members throughout the VNA’s service area support its mission

with generous donations, in-kind gifts, bequests and volunteer service. Here’s

what motivates just a few of our supporters in their own words…

“All of the VNA’s services

are essential but I have an

anity for the Hospice

because I worked with

a hospice years ago.”

– Cynthia Harriman

“After my own hip surgery, I experienced

firsthand how good home

care can reduce inpatient stays

and expedite recovery.”

– Laura Page-Greifinger

“The joy that VNA home

care visits and Friendship

House bring to those who

might otherwise be isolated

and alone is inspirational.”

– Dale Calvert

Our tradition of caring began in 1898 when visiting nursing was introduced

to this region by Anna B. Hillock who traveled by bicycle delivering care to the

needy. Her work was funded by the Female Charitable Society which merged

with other groups and adopted the name Visiting Nurse Association in 1916.

Since then, we’ve led the way in home care, amassed many achievements and

established a legacy of caring.

A growing client base across more than 110 municipalities…

1918 VNA radius of care expands by acquiring its first automobile,

a Ford touring car, with $765 in community donations.

1996 VNA’s charter expands to include Hunterdon County along

with Morris.

2004 Visiting Health Service of Morris County is acquired including

Friendship House and House Call Groceries for Seniors.

2017 Expansion into Sussex and Warren Counties with the acquisition

of VNA of Saint Claire’s.

From nursing agency to full-service home care provider…

1970 Physical, occupational and speech therapy services is added.

1978 The home health aide program begins.

1995 A dedicated Hospice program is established.

2010 By popular demand, the Private Care program expands to include

part-time, full-time and live-in options.

2012 ZOE, an electronic monitoring or “telehealth” system, is introduced.

Embracing technology and education…

1978 First computer is purchased to better manage growing client

volume and Medicare documentation.

2006 Nurses and rehabilitation therapists are issued laptop computers

with wireless connectivity that facilitates real-time information

sharing, enhancing quality and eciency.

2010 In response to a competitive nursing market, VNA establishes a

New Graduate Program oering BSNs mentoring and on-the-job

training.

2013 State-of-the-art electronic records technology is implemented.

2014 A well-equipped in-house Clinical Skills Lab is established.

2017 VNA partners with Rutgers University to oer Out-of-Hospital

Residencies in home care.

A Storied Legacy of

Caring

An Essential Home Care Safety NetAccess to aordable elder care is a timely concern because:

• Opinion surveys consistently find that most seniors and future

retirees would prefer to age in place.

• Through personal and family experiences, many are discovering that

home care needs often don’t qualify for or exceed Medicare benefits.

• Elder caregiving 24/7— and the stresses and challenges associated

with that role—is now a daily reality for one of every four adults

locally and nationally who are responsible for a parent, spouse or

another loved one.

Ensuring Access for EveryoneAcross its service area, the VNA addresses those concerns, along

with the home care needs of younger residents with serious illnesses,

injuries and disabilities. In 2018, we provided a safety net for clients

from all walks of life with

varied resource levels. Along

with delivering private care

and Medicare and insurance

funded services, we secured

grants and donations to

serve those with limited

financial resources and oset

expenses associated

with various essential

VNA programs.

“ I don’t know how we’d manage without VNA…”

“Friendship House is a wonderful place,” observed

caregiver Geri Boyle. Three years ago, a call to

1-800-WE VISIT connected Geri and her husband,

Allan, with the VNA’s social adult day care center in

Boonton Township.

Despite Alzheimer’s-related memory issues, Allan,

81, enjoys attending the center (which he calls “the

oce”). “He’s in a better mood there than when

isolated at home. He loves the sta and the other

clients — and I do, too. I volunteer to help with

activities when I can and attend the Caregiver

Support Group,” said Geri. “The center also frees

some time for me to run errands and help out my

sister who lives alone.”

7

Page 8: 2018 ANNUAL REPORTa hospice years ago.” – Cynthia Harriman “After my own hip surgery, I experienced firsthand how good home care can reduce inpatient stays and expedite recovery.”

Every aspect of the healthcare system is in flux and home care is trending.

In fact, a systemic movement to reduce inpatient care is placing greater

emphasis on home care as a cost-ecient alternative to hospitals and

nursing homes that also aords patients better quality of life.

Rising demand is creating exciting new opportunities, along with

competition for the best sta. There’s also more emphasis on the caliber of

care than ever before and greater transparency. Providers are continuously

evaluated on quality, safety, patient satisfaction and cost containment — and,

their ratings are now available to consumers, as well as third-party payers.

Well-Positioned for the Future

In this dynamic environment, the VNA of Northern NJ is well-positioned to

thrive. Along with tracking local needs, we’re keeping abreast of industry

trends and innovations, devising new initiatives and adjusting our strategic

direction as needed. Our activities include:

Sta retention and training underscored by the 27 diverse in-house training

programs completed last year, covering everything from wound and cancer

care to emergency preparedness and human tracking.

Partnerships with local, county and state governments, other nonprofits and

businesses who share various VNA goals including a 2018-19 NJ Department

of Health grant to provide immunizations throughout our service area and

a Warren County government grant-funded program to help the elderly

reduce their risk of falls and related injuries in their homes.

Innovations and technology enhancements including the 2019

implementation of HomeCare HomeBase, the top rated, state-of-the-art

electronic health records technology for our industry.
