DEAR FRIEND,Father Flanagan once said, “When you help a child today, you write the history of tomorrow.”

At Boys Town, we strive to live up to this principle every day. We believe every child and every family has worth and value. Most of the children and families we work with every day have not had an easy time. They struggle, they suffer and they are often close to giving up on life. We need to remember that no matter how broken people seem to be, they are children of God who can be saved and find redemption and healing.

Often, our life-changing Youth Care and Health Care services have an even greater impact on the children and families we help. For some, experiencing a revival – in body, mind and spirit – ignites a deep motivation to pay it forward to others in need.

In this Annual Report, you will be introduced to some of those people whose lives have been transformed with Boys Town’s help and who have gone on to become life-changers. They now strive to bring hope to others and offer the support they need to get their lives back.

This ripple effect of lives changing lives starts with people like you, who find it in your heart to help others achieve their dreams or reduce their suffering.

Your acts of support and kindheartedness have changed lives and inspired countless people to continue on and change lives. Your gift is the kind of gift that continues to give for years and years to come.

Father Flanagan also once said, “In the happiness brought to others, our own happiness is reflected.” There is nothing more moving than witnessing others who have struggled and worked to get their lives back, and knowing you have played a part in it. Thank you for helping us make miracles of the heart possible every day.

God’s Blessings,

Father Steven E. Boes President and National Executive Director Boys Town

HELPING TO CHANGE LIVES: JIM ST. GERMAINBorn into poverty in Haiti, Jim St. Germain moved to Brooklyn’s Crown Heights into an overcrowded apartment with his family and quickly got into a dangerous street life. He began stealing, dealing drugs and growing increasingly indifferent to the violence around him.

By the time he was arrested for dealing crack, he had been handcuffed more than a dozen times. At the age of 15, the walls of the system were closing in around him. But instead of prison, he was placed in a Boys Town residential program.

Surrounded by mentors, Jim found his way, got his GED, graduated from college and then made the bravest decision of his life: to live as an adult in the neighborhood where he had lost himself and to work to reform the justice system’s treatment of at-risk kids.

Today, Jim is a residential-care advocate for the city of New York and was appointed by President Obama to the Coordinating Council on Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention. He also founded Preparing Leaders of Tomorrow, a non-profit organization that provides mentoring to at-risk and formerly incarcerated kids. He is also an award-winning author of the book, “The Stone of Hope: A Memoir.”

“Paying it forward is the most important thing you can do,” Jim recently told a group of Boys Town youth. “You not only have the obligation to be great, but you have the obligation to be great and then fight for the young person you were.”

Jim St. Germain attends numerous speaking engagements and forums, sharing his views on how best to help today’s at-risk youth.

PAYING IT FORWARD: SONYA BROWNAs a child, Sonya Brown remembers spending many nights in emergency rooms. It wasn’t because she and her siblings were sick or prone to accidents. It was because they needed a place to sleep.

“My family, we were homeless a lot,” Sonya said. “To not know what I’d be eating next and to not know when my mom would have another psychotic episode, I had vivid memories of what that feels like. We would sleep in emergency rooms because we couldn’t find anywhere else to sleep.”

After many failed foster care placements, Sonya landed in a Boys Town Louisiana emergency shelter at age 16.

At Boys Town, she experienced compassion and generosity which eventually inspired her career path.

“I learned that people will love you in spite of your behaviors,” Sonya said. “People will continue to work with you and teach you the skills that you need.”

Having gone full circle in her life, Sonya is now helping young people find their own path to healing through Project 18, an organization she founded that assists kids who age out of foster care find the supportive services they need to help make the transition smoother and more successful.

In April 2018, the Association of Children’s Residential Centers presented Sonya with the “Tricialouise Gurley Millard Youth Advocate Award” for her role in advocating for teenagers aging out of foster care.

“I really credit Boys Town for helping to launch my career and to launch me as a woman, person-ally and professionally,” Sonya said. “I feel that Boys Town needs the support of individuals, the community, anyone who recognizes that a young person, who is at risk, or homeless, or a runaway, recognizes that they have limitless potential.”

“I learned that people will love you IN SPITE OF

YOUR BEHAVIORS.”

— SONYA BROWN

One of Sonya Brown’s first experiences as a child advocate was when she testified before a Congressional committee.

SCHOOL DISTRICT PARTNERSHIP STRENGTHENS COMMUNITY: BOYS TOWN NEVADABoys Town is always looking for unique ways to reach out to more children and families, and raise awareness of the life-altering services available to them. One way we do that is through partnering with schools, which provides great opportunities to improve learning in classrooms while also connecting with students and parents who can benefit from Boys Town’s assistance.

An example of this is Boys Town Nevada Common Sense Parenting® recently being honored by Clark County School District as Partner of the Year.

“We were so excited when this partnership began with the school district,” said Stacy Burrell, Common Sense Parenting Supervisor. “We love how we are making waves to be more involved with the community. I think this kind of program really gives parents a sense of value.”

Boys Town received the award at an Annual Partnership Recognition Breakfast, where the District celebrated its amazing community partners.

Stacy represented Boys Town in receiving the award for the work Common Sense Parenting has done with FACES, an organization that helps schools, families and communities work together to help children be successful.

Through FACES, parents of current and future District students can enter the University of Family Learning program. This program provides parents access to several valuable resources for education, networking and parent leadership information. Boys Town Common Sense Parenting is one of those resources.

Boys Town Common Sense Parenting classes are now in almost all Clark County schools that partner with FACES, which has helped increase community awareness and engagement of Boys Town’s programs and services.

“I think this kind of PROGRAM REALLY GIVES parents a

SENSE OF VALUE.”

COUPLE TURNED LIVES OF HARDSHIP INTO CAREERS OF SERVICE: JEFF AND MISTY SWEEZYBefore they were Boys Town Family-Teachers®, before they started a family of their own, and even before they met, Jeff and Misty Sweezy understood what it was like to grow up in an unhealthy environment.

Surrounded by gang violence and drug and alcohol addiction, both seemed headed for certain poverty, likely incarceration and possibly even early death. Then they found Boys Town.

“I was able to go to Boys Town at the age of 13,” Misty said. “It was very family-oriented. What made me work hard was knowing that I felt loved, that people were genuine with me and that they meant what they were saying to me.”

“Boys Town doesn’t change you,” Jeff said. “Boys Town gives you tools to help you change yourself.”

After leaving Boys Town, Jeff and Misty reconnected later in life and eventually married. They recently moved to the Village of Boys Town, Nebraska to start their new lives as Family-Teachers.

As Family-Teachers, Jeff and Misty strive to help struggling teens break cycles of hardship they faced before coming to Boys Town. They diligently work to establish a safe environment, helping kids to learn and grow, emotionally, spiritually and academically.

One unique way the Sweezys do this is by providing youngsters with the opportunities to learn about and honor the sacrifice military veterans have made while serving our country. Jeff is an Army combat veteran who served in Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom.

As a youth at Boys Town, Misty fondly remembered visiting nursing homes. So when she and Jeff became Family-Teachers, they wanted to continue that tradition and also honor the generations of military service in their own families.

For the past two years, once a month, Jeff and Misty have taken youth from two Boys Town homes to visit veterans at the Eastern Nebraska Veterans’ Home.

Jeff said the values these visits teach the kids are far-reaching and life-changing. “It reinforces giv-ing back to the community and reaching out past your one little neighborhood and trying to see how much you can do in the entire community and not just where you live.”

Jeff and Misty Sweezy and their Boys Town youth regularly visit military veterans, playing games and learning about the sacrifices

the veterans have made for our country.

GIVING BACK: PIPER SILVERRaised in poverty and abused by her father and brother, Piper Silver went to foster care at age 10.

“We were very poor growing up and didn’t have a lot of resources, so I didn’t have the nicest clothes,” Piper said. “I probably wore the same outfit like four days a week.”

In addition to the abuse at home, Piper had to endure being bullied at school.

“I just always felt very lonely,” Piper said. “I was scared to be at home and at school.”

Piper came to Boys Town after two years in foster care, scared and quiet. But she found her voice and her confidence through the love and support she found here.

“I would have described her as very broken,” said Jenny Everett, Piper’s Family-Teacher®. “When she graduated Boys Town? Well, probably the polar opposite of that. Her confidence was really boosted and she was ready to go, very excited about her future.”

Piper earned a scholarship to college. “Boys Town turned my entire life around, gave me things I never imagined,” Piper said.

Today, Piper gives back to kids coming from similar circumstances in the emergency shelter at Boys Town, drawing from her own experience to make a difference in their lives.

“I will never be able to put into words how thankful I am to Boys Town for giving me opportunities and a family,” Piper said.

“When she graduated Boys Town… HER CONFIDENCE WAS REALLY

BOOSTED and she was... very excited about her future.”

— JEFF & JENNY EVERETT, BOYS TOWN FAMILY-TEACHERS

Piper Silver credits her Boys Town Family-Teachers®, Jeff and Jenny Everett, for much of her success.

POSITIVE, LONG-TERM INFLUENCE: AARON COBBSIf there’s any doubt about the positive, long-term influence Boys Town has on the youth it serves, just look at the story of LaVerne Jennings, Aaron Cobbs and Cobbs’ daughter, Lindsey.

In 1976, Aaron Cobbs was a youth in Boys Town’s Family Home Program. It was during this time that Aaron, who would graduate from Boys Town in 1982, met LaVerne Jennings.

LaVerne began her Boys Town career as an Assistant Family-Teacher® (AFT) in 1979 (AFT’s help care for youth in residential homes), dedicating 30 years of her life to helping youth grow and follow their dreams. Aaron was one of the youth she inspired with her work.

“She taught me to be a man with integrity and character,” Aaron said. “LaVerne taught me to care for others, and not always think about myself. I feel that she plays a big part in me being the man that I am today.”

In 1998, Aaron returned to Boys Town, not surprisingly to work as an AFT.

“Aaron is a good role model not only for our kids but for adults as well. He inspires others to follow their dreams,” LaVerne said.

Aaron is not only an outstanding role model to Boys Town youth but also to his own daughter, Lindsey Cobbs, who followed closely in her father’s footsteps by becoming an AFT in 2016.

“Lindsey has always had a very kind heart, and a passion for wanting to help others, so it doesn’t sur-prise me she wanted to work at Boys Town,” Aaron said. “She thrives on seeing others be successful.”

The selfless examples set by LaVerne and Aaron continue on with Lindsey, who is now inspiring another generation of youngsters to be life-changers in their own right.

“LAVERNE TAUGHT ME TO CARE FOR OTHERS…. I feel that she

PLAYS A BIG PART IN ME BEING THE MAN THAT I AM today.”

FORMER BOYS TOWN YOUTH PAVED NEW PATH TO HELPING OTHERS: KELSEY WOLFStunned by her parents’ divorce, Kelsey Wolf internalized her pain, frustration and anger. Kelsey was 11. She felt lost and angry.

“I never really talked about it,” she said. “I just kind of acted out.”

At age 14, Kelsey took a joyride in the family truck and got into an accident. Her mom, at her wit’s end, turned to Boys Town.

After a year and a half at Boys Town, Kelsey was ready to return home. Before leaving, she learned her best friend had died. The friend went to sleep after a party and never woke up.

“At that moment, I realized Boys Town had changed my life,” Kelsey said. “And I wanted to help save somebody….”

Kelsey decided to stay at Boys Town longer, and after graduating in 2012 pursued a career where she could give back to other young people.

“Right now I’m working at a middle school,” she said. “I think my time at Boys Town has definitely prepared me for what I do now.”

Kelsey says Father Flanagan’s saying, “There’s no such thing as a bad boy,” has played a big role in her work with students.

“I think about it,” she says, “At one point, all my teachers thought I was unreachable. So when I look at some of these kids, I’m like, ‘Somebody thought that about me.’ So, they’re not bad. There’s probably a lot more to it. But I know that this isn’t all they are.”

Life lessons learned at Boys Town now serve as the foundation for instruction Kelsey Wolf provides to her own middle school students.

“At that moment, I realized Boys Town had changed my life.

And I WANTED TO HELP SAVE SOMEBODY….”

CATALYST OF CHANGE: LILY CELSOLily Celso left her hometown of Chicago over 10 years ago to get a fresh start at Boys Town. But she never forgot her community.

“When I left here, I always knew I wanted to come back,” Lily said.

One day in Chicago while walking with her friends, a guy pulled up in a car, stuck his head out the window and started shooting. Only a tree saved their lives.

“I remember thinking how lucky I was that that tree was there and we were able to dodge a bullet,” Lily said.

That was the moment Lily knew she needed a dramatic change.

“I heard about Boys Town,” Lily said. “My parents got on board, and they figured it would be the best choice at the time.”

Boys Town provided Lily with a safe place where she could put her guard down and flourish.

“They provided me with the opportunity to go to college, and they were there every step of the way,” Lily said.

Today, she serves as a Youth Intervention Specialist for Chicago Public Schools, helping kids who face many of the same challenges she faced so many years ago.

Determined to achieve change as a role model and mentor, Lily is providing positive opportunities and experiences to the kids of Chicago through community events like Dia de los Muertos and Amor al Arte.

“Boys Town has showed me that we can come together, that we can be a community,” Lily said. “And when we do come together, we’re more powerful than just being one person.”

Antonio Perez arrived at Boys Town in the summer of 1994 a troubled 13-year-old who was caught up in a street life of gangs and drugs.

At that dark moment in his life, Antonio could not have imagined that 24 years later, he would be honored as the 2017-18 Educator of the Year by the Office for Multicultural Affairs at the University of Nebraska-Kearney.

“It is very humbling,” Perez said of the award. “Boys Town prepared me to be a leader through learning skills that allowed me to be successful. That success has translated to sports to school to career to family.”

Antonio’s journey to Boys Town was short and sudden. In that summer of 1994, Antonio’s grandfather knew the young boy was at a pivotal time in his life. One day, the grandfather had seen enough and told Antonio to pack a backpack with his belongings. Then he drove Antonio to Boys Town.

There, Antonio started a new life.

“I was blessed to have the same Family-Teachers® all five years I was there.” Perez said. “They were great to me and provided me with much needed stability.”

After graduating from Boys Town in 1999, he went to college and studied to become a teacher. Later, he earned a master’s degree. Currently, he works as a counselor at Omaha South High School in Omaha, Nebraska.

Antonio’s background affords him unique insight into what many troubled students are going through and how to help them.

“I see many of the same challenges from when I was young,” Perez said. “At the end of the day, the students I serve still want to be respected, cared for and loved.”

It’s no surprise Antonio’s Omaha South students felt compelled to nominate him for the award so he could be recognized for his remarkable journey to success and his unshakable desire to be a difference maker in kids’ lives.

Antonio Perez is a high school counselor at Omaha South High School and also coaches at Omaha North High School.

“I see many of the same challenges from when I was

young…. At the end of the day, the students I serve still want to be respected, cared for and loved.”

RETIRED NURSE WON’T QUIT: GINA LYPACZEWSKIFrom volunteer to employee to volunteer, Gina Lypaczewski has seen countless miracles throughout her years at Boys Town.

As a teenager, Gina found her calling volunteering as a candy striper in the pediatric units.

Gina’s career included roles in academia, administration, research and clinical practice, mostly in the pediatric nursing field. In 2009, she found herself at Boys Town National Research Hospital where she served as a nurse supervisor until 2015.

“I found one of the best places to work,” Gina said. “I loved my coworkers. I loved the expertise of the physicians and staff. Everyone knew and respected each other.”

In addition to finding a group of peers she admired, Gina found a group of kids who inspired her. “I always had an affinity for youth,” she said. “When I toured the new RTC [Residential Treatment Center] location and heard about the children there, I thought, ‘This is a place where miracles happen. When I retire, I want to work with these kids.’”

Upon retirement, Gina began volunteering as a tutor in the RTC classroom. She now visits with the youth once a week, teaching life lessons through games. “These kids are so strong,” Gina said.

“I don’t know why they’re there – probably not for the best reasons. Yet they smile. They play. They have resiliency.”

Gina also finds joy in helping the children at the Hospital’s Center for Childhood Deafness, Language and Learning (CCDLL). She is the president of the Friends of the CCDLL volunteer group and a member of the Pure Inspiration fundraiser planning committee, raising money and awareness for the Center.

“I am so honored to be part of these miracles,” she said. “The youth who come from broken places and get built up again. The kids who are deaf and hard of hearing and communicate again. I’m just drawn to those kids. Boys Town brings me comfort. It brings me comfort to know that such great things are being accomplished.”

“I am so honored to be part of these miracles.” …

— GINA LYPACZEWSKI

Even in retirement after a long career in pediatric nursing, Gina Lypaczewski continues to help and guide children as a volunteer.

COMING BACK TO GIVE BACK: DR. NICK BASALAYAfter nearly 10 years, Dr. Nick Basalay is returning to the place that inspired a career of making a difference in the lives of troubled girls and boys.

Once a behavioral health technician at the Boys Town Residential Treatment Center, Dr. Basalay returns with a M.D. to help youth as a child and adolescent psychiatrist.

“Boys Town really helped me find my calling and my passion,” Dr. Basalay said. “I can’t quantify what I learned and how much I grew. Being able to return and give back to them was always the hope and the goal.”

Dr. Basalay’s journey began in 2005 after graduating from college with a degree in psychology. He was working at an adult crisis center when a coworker introduced him to Boys Town. Dr. Basalay was interested in pediatric mental health so he applied for a position as a behavioral health technician at the Residential Treatment Center.

In that role, Dr. Basalay provided guidance to youth as they participated in their day-to-day activities. It also let him see the Boys Town Model® in action.

“I liked that you could watch the development and progress,” he said. “It wasn’t a rush. You had a chance to develop a therapeutic relationship with these kids and use that to help them learn and grow.”

Working closely with Dr. Doug Spellman, Medical Director at the Residential Treatment Center, Dr. Basalay learned what behavioral disorders in children looked like and witnessed the healing that can be achieved through therapy and a safe, consistent environment.

“I got to talk to Dr. Spellman, the psychiatrist of the kids there, and pick his brain,” he said. “I got to see his role making a difference and realized that’s where I could have the biggest impact.”

Now, years later, Dr. Basalay is bringing a different kind of care to the very kids who need it most.

Dr. Nick Basalay returned to the Boys Town Residential Treatment Center in a new role, but with the same deep

commitment to helping children.

“I liked that you could watch the development and progress…. You had a chance to develop a

therapeutic relationship with these kids and use that to help

them learn and grow.”

“One of the many things I like about working for Boys Town is the opportunity to mentor a high school youth. The interaction with the kids is what makes the mission truly come alive for me. It allows me to witness how our efforts make a difference.“

“The success of what we accomplish at Boys Town is attributed to many parts like a kaleidoscope that creates a mystical image. It begins with our donors who believe in what Father Flanagan started over 100 years ago and ends with our staff whose patience and love transforms the young men and women at Boys Town into responsible citizens in our communities.“

STUDENT HELP, JUST A PHONE CALL AWAY!

School administrators are committed to ensuring that every student in their school and district is safe, both in the classroom and at home. They also want to be sure students (and their families) can easily reach out for help with problems like bullying, depression, suicidal thoughts, substance abuse, relationship issues and other concerns that can threaten their physical or emotional well-being.

That’s why Omaha Public Schools (OPS) is partnering with the Boys Town National Hotline® to launch its Safe Schools Hotline. This service is available 24/7, year-round and allows callers to speak anonymously with trained Boys Town Crisis Counselors.

By adding OPS, the Safe Schools Hotline will be able to reach 52,000 more students in 82 schools. The Safe Schools Hotline started in August 2013, serving one Nebraska school district. Because of the Hotline’s success, it now serves six of the state’s school districts.

A majority of calls are from people concerned about a student after having seen something on social media or heard the student may be considering self-harm or suicide. These callers provide the needed information to the Crisis Counselors who are then able to deal with the safety issues. The counselor then shares the information with schools so the at-risk child can get help.

“The Hotline gives kids and parents a safe place to call when they are struggling with any safety issue involving students whether it is mental health, bullying or suicide,” said Kris Bosiljevac, Boys Town National Hotline Manag-er. “We can provide parents and children the resources they need in order to help, whoever it may be.”

YOU PLAY A CRITICAL ROLE

As a supporter of Boys Town, you play a critical role in helping hope grow for so many across the United States. We ask that you continue to help us heal America’s hurting children and at-risk families.

We remember each of you in our thoughts and prayers; please do the same for all the children who face tomorrow in desperate need of Boys Town’s life-changing care.

The Honor Roll of Donors on the following pages recognizes individuals and organizations that made direct or in-kind gifts of at least $1,000 in 2018 to support Boys Town youth and families.

We also extend our sincere appreciation to our donors who requested anonymity.

Many generous supporters made lasting gifts to Boys Town through their estates. We gratefully remember individuals who made estate gifts of at least $10,000 in 2018 to support our mission.

Great care was taken to make this Honor Roll as complete and accurate as possible. We apologize if anyone was mistakenly omitted or incorrectly listed.

“My struggle first began when I was held back in the fifth grade. I had been so sick, I couldn’t catch up. My classmates teased me that I would never catch up. They said I was dumb. When I came to Boys Town, I had the IQ of a fourth-grader. I have been working very hard. I am now in the seventh grade, moving to the eighth grade, and I’m proud to say my IQ is now at the eighth-grade level.

“Thanks to Boys Town, I have the opportunity to go to college and learn in a career that I love and will enjoy. You have changed me from a young, emotional 14-year-old to a ready and willing 18-year-old. Boys Town has given me the skills I will use in life and I am very, very grateful.”

“Having a car to drive myself to work and listen to my own music means

so much more than I can put into words. I just never thought I would be

a car owner. I can go to the store and not feel like a burden when asking oth-er people for rides. And I can help out other people who were helping me.

It’s such an amazing feeling.” — SHAELYN

“When I came to Boys Town, I was what people called a juvenile delinquent. I was wandering the streets carrying a gun and unstoppable.… I went to the detention center and that was one of the best things to happen to me… I was determined to change. When I got in trouble, I picked myself up and kept going. This was due to my Family-Teachers. Without them, I could not be successful. I learned to love my Family-Teachers’ little child. He did not see me as a bad kid, but as a big brother. So how could I be bad? They have helped me be a leader. Thank you, thank you, thank you.”

“Boys Town has given me the strength to be an outstanding leader. I was also given a second

chance to improve my life, a chance to forgive myself and become a better

person. Boys Town has given me the opportunity to participate on a daily

basis in church, in the community and the home. I made honor roll.

I was able to grow spiritually and emotionally stronger.”

For more than 100 years, Boys Town’s growth and success in saving children and healing families has been possible thanks to generous donations and the foresight and courage of Father Flanagan. Boys Town maintains high standards of fiscal responsibility, working to ensure that its resources will last for generations to come to serve America’s children, families and communities.

Flanagan’s Hope for Endowment Fulfilled

In 1930, in the heart of the Great Depression, Father Flanagan wrote that he hoped Boys Town could set up “an endowment fund, the interest of which will pay for the upkeep of our home, so that it will be unnecessary for us to spend a good portion of our time in the appeal and collection of funds.”

Boys Town established the Father Flanagan’s Fund for Needy Children (Fund for Needy Children) in 1941 to provide investment income to support current programs and investment growth to sustain these programs in future years.

Helping Children Today and Into the Future

The Fund for Needy Children is operated as a de facto restricted fund for the purpose of helping children today and into the future. All current unrestricted donations – direct mail, wills and bequests — are spent on the direct care of children. None of these donations are put in the Fund for Needy Children unless directed by the donor. Today, as Boys Town continues to balance the competing needs of current and future generations, the Fund for Needy Children is as important as the day it was established. Based on expected investment returns and inflation factors, the Fund for Needy Children can spend, on average, between 4 and 5 percent of its market value in order to maintain its purchas-ing power.

Reasonable Risk-Taking to Help More Children

Father Flanagan and his successors trusted God’s goodness and took reasonable risks in order to help more and more children. Boys Town is what it is today because of this trust and risk-taking.

Sound Investments, Solid Management

During 2018, the Father Flanagan’s Fund for Needy Children provided $44,976,000 of support, or 10.47 percent of the funds necessary to operate Boys Town. This was 4.9 percent of the Fund’s January 1, 2018, value.

Sound investments and solid management of the Fund for Needy Children has allowed it to provide stable support for Boys Town at times when markets have been volatile.

Boys Town always strives to be prudent with the dollars received from outside sources, including donations from the public. In 2018, 83.93 percent of every dollar received was spent on the care of children. Supporting services comprised only 16.07 percent of total expenses, which is significantly lower than the national benchmark of 35 percent the not-for-profit industry utilizes.
