Annual Convention Senator Requirements

Senators serve as a chartered chapter’s representative to the National Senate. In order to serve in this position, Senators must meet the following requirements:

Be a paid Member of NSBE and the chartered chapter represented

o Cannot be an affiliate member

Be knowledgeable of the National Constitution, National Bylaws, Regional Bylaws and parliamentary procedure (Roberts Rules of Order)

Be aware of the wishes of the chapter and vote accordingly

Be registered as a Senator by March 22, 2018. Registration means that you are listed in our online NSBE Connect system as a Senator for your chapter and meet the requirements. See your Chapter President if you are unsure if you are registered. In order to be counted as present at Convention and able to vote, you must have check-in with a Parliamentarian by the end of the National Forum on Thursday, March 30th 5:00 pm.

Mandatory Sessions For NSBE Senators

All Senators are required to attend all ballot related events. Updates can be made regarding elections at the end of General Sessions or any of the mandatory sessions. The following sessions are required for all NSBE Senators to attend. Times and locations can be found in the convention agenda.

Voting System

This year, we will be using an electronic voting system entitled eBallot. EBallot is a secure, electronic voting system that allows everyone to vote with flexibility as long as they have internet access. It allows senators to vote via an online voting portal. For more information on the system, please visit www.eballot.com.

Voting Instructions for Senators

National Voting Instructions

Each senator will cast a vote to select the members of the 2018-2019 National Executive Board and to adopt any constitutional amendments/ballot proposals. National voting will take place on Saturday.

After the National Forum and National Candidate Q&A, discuss the candidates and any new information regarding governing document amendments with your chapter and determine your Chapter’s vote.

Once National Voting opens you will receive an email to the address within your NSBE Connect profile. The email will contain your credentials for the VoteNet system along with the link to access the system.

Go to the VoteNet site using the provided link and log in.

Choose the ballot that you will be voting on (Regional/National)

Carefully make your selections on your electronic ballot.

Review your electronic ballot to ensure you have marked it appropriately

Cast your vote by hitting “Submit”

Save a copy of your ballot by clicking to download a receipt.

Continue to the link provided on the completion page.

Retain a copy of your receipt to provide incase it is requested.

Consequence of Not Voting

Chapters participate in Regional and National business by selecting 2 Senators to cast a vote on their behalf. When a Senator does not cast a vote, they have not fulfilled their duties and have done a disservice to their chapter and our national membership as their voice is not heard. In addition, Senators who do not cast a vote will automatically forfeit the conference discounted registration rate they received and will be billed the exact conference registration discount (Bylaws Article XVI F 3).

The reason this change is being made is to update the National Constitution to reflect the common practice that NSBE has followed over the past few years. This practice is to allow graduating seniors to serve in leadership position.

ARTICLE XII – OFFICES Section 1. All elected offices will be held by Members in good standing. All appointed offices with the exception of the National Convention Planning Chairperson will be held by either Members or Professional members in good standing. Section 2. The elected offices of the National Executive Board are:

1. A. The National Executive Board-Elect shall take office May 1 following the election and shall serve a one year term.

Section 6. Should a vacancy occur in the office of National Chair, the unexpired term shall be filled by the National Vice Chair. Should a vacancy occur in the office of Professional Chair, the Professionals will fill the position according to the Professionals Operating Guidelines. Should a vacancy occur in the office of Regional Chair, the Region will fill the position according to the region's working rules. Election of the National Executive Board Each senator is required to cast their vote for election of the 2018-2019 National Executive Board. The National Candidates have provided statements that describe how they will help NSBE work towards our strategic goals. These statements are provided in this handbook. In order to be considered a National Candidate for a National Executive Board position each person had to complete a Declaration of Intent and provide official documentation of their eligibility to serve on the National Executive Board. Each candidate will also have to complete all elements of certification process to remain on the ballot for Convention. These combined elements include completion of basic NSBE leadership training and NSBE review exam and submission of a NSBE/Leadership resume, recommendation letter, and answer to short answer questions detailed in this handbook. There are 14 elected positions on the National Executive Board. Those positions highlighted in blue have candidates who are currently on the ballot for convention. All open positions will be filled by the REB-Elect after convention along with the appointed positions mentioned in the Candidate Handbook. National Executive Board Candidate Information

NATIONAL CHAIRPERSON CANDIDATES

Racheida Lewis Virginia Tech

Engineering Education Graduate Student

The society plans to graduate 10,000 black engineers annually by the year 2025. If elected/appointed how do you plan to utilize your position to help NSBE achieve this goal? If elected National Chair, I plan to implement a vision that will strengthen the competency in both

academic and non-academic skillsets across all membership demographics. My goal for NSBE Jr. is to

increase the awareness of engineering as a career option and encourage the pursuit of engineering

amongst our African-American youth. In order for our youth to believe that they can be an engineer, they

must be able to see engineers who look like them and have high confidence in their abilities to succeed

in fundamental coursework that will prepare them for an engineering career. For the Collegiate

demographic, my goal is to increase the competitiveness of all of our members in order to gain

employment opportunities and provide them with skills applicable to their coursework or career interests.

By providing opportunities to our membership that directly correlates with an engineering career, they

are more likely to persist towards an engineering degree. Lastly, collaborating with the National

Professionals Chair, I want to continue the development of Professional programming and increase the

value associated with being a Professional member. Supporting our Professionals ultimately provides

more mentors for younger demographics to engage with and examples of people to aspire to.

Select one of the NSBE Core Values and explain how you have demonstrated the NSBE Core Value. The core value that I am choosing to focus on is 'Leadership'. As National Vice Chair, I had the

opportunity to hone my self-management skills while assisting zone members and others in their

leadership development and soft skills that can be transferable throughout their leadership trajectory.

This year, the charge of managing interactions between the National Membership Zone, Regional Vice

Chairs, and Regional International Chairs while supporting the National Chair in his efforts, allowed me

to obtain experience in operational management. Working with the Regional Chairs, Vice Chairs, and

International Chairs provided me with an understanding of their dynamic in order to help them learn how

to best work with each other, their boards, and expand their network in order to successfully meet their

goals. In support of the National Directive of Data Visualization, I have supported the regional

membership zones by providing information to aid the understanding of their membership demographics

and templates to support future data management. Working with a multitude of regional leaders has

enabled me to witness growth in individual confidence, relationship building with WHQ, and strategic

thinking enhancement that will support the society in its current goal of 10K by 2025.

Niasia Williams University of Iowa STEM Education Graduate Student

The society plans to graduate 10,000 black engineers annually by the year 2025. If elected/appointed how do you plan to utilize your position to help NSBE achieve this goal? Three things would be at the top of my list as National Chairperson which will help NSBE achieve its 2025

goal. First is setting forth the plan for the “Journey to 2025”. Currently the vision for the end goal has been

communicated but how to get to the goal, what each member/chapter/region can and should do to

participate has yet to be laid out. 2018 is the time for the society to move into action and that needs a

plan of action. Before the summer of 2018 is out, each level will have a set of activities identified that will

directly impact the 2025 goal. The second thing is empowering the members/chapters to contribute

individually to the goal and giving credit for their contributions. Empowerment includes the sharing of

resources, recognition and advocacy within their local areas, and training in both the areas of leadership

and activities supporting future success. Finally as National Chairperson, I will make leading by example

a focus of the leadership body. In this implementation phase, leadership will get into the trenches with

our membership body to conduct the work of the society and reach the 2025 goal.

Select one of the NSBE Core Values and explain how you have demonstrated the NSBE Core Value. Leadership is one of my favorite core values because it speaks to developing the next generation of

leaders and being an example. I often attend the University of Connecticut’s meetings/events during

which I make sure to speak with the chapter leadership about what they are doing, give suggestions,

offer assistance, and push the members of the chapter into leadership. I never leave a room without

encouraging someone to carry the mantle into the future. This means sharing time-management tips

(since I work, attend school, and am in leadership in and outside of NSBE) and helping future leaders

connect their talent/passions to positions where they can make an impact and gain useful experience.

Another example of me demonstrating this core value is “The NSBE Core Values”. When the proposal

for a set of core values came about initially there was not the consensus needed for it to be approved. I

took the initiative to lead a task force which evaluated the proposed values and adjusted them so that

they were sure to reflect the essence of our society. In two weeks the core values were approved. These

are a few ways in which I demonstrate the core value of leadership.

NATIONAL VICE CHAIRPERSON CANDIDATE

Jocelyn Jackson

The society plans to graduate 10,000 black engineers annually by the year 2025. If elected/appointed how do you plan to utilize your position to help NSBE achieve this goal? Membership zone plays a critical role in helping NSBE progress towards the goal of graduating 10,000 black

engineers annually by the year 2025. If elected, I understand that as leader of the membership zone I will

need to collaborate with the NEB, especially programs zone to come up with creative ways of achieving our

goal. I can utilize my position to help reach this goal by increasing NSBE retention rates and membership.

One way to do this is reinventing the mentoring program to cater to all membership types and create an

evaluation system to actively track its effectiveness. Mentorship is important because one can gain academic

support, encouragement, advice, and enhanced networks with a strong mentor. Also, working with the

programs zone to ensure we are offering members academic programs and scholarships to increase retention

rates. I currently serve on the Strategic Planning Taskforce and I'm working on ways of increasing

membership to present at national convention. If elected as Vice Chair, I would love the opportunity to keep

working on this plan.

Select one of the NSBE Core Values and explain how you have demonstrated the NSBE Core Value. The NSBE Core Values are Ex2CEL which stands for excellence, exposure, community, empathy, and

leadership. Out of all of these values, as Region V Chair I've demonstrated a great amount of empathy

for my members by working to seek a greater understanding of each member individually. I have a

collaborative leadership style and understand that NSBE leadership is a customer service role. This year, I

put together a strategic task force for natural disaster relief within the region for Hurricane Harvey Victims.

Working with the task force, we were able to raise almost $3,000 for members in the region who needed

support. I created an application for that which was promoted on our regional website, social media platforms,

and chapter general body meetings. The Hurricane Harvey relief funds raised were able to help 11 members

in our region replace small appliances, clothes, cover hotel cost, and support their families. This was very

important to me because it proved what NSBE is about in terms of cultural responsibility and family.

NATIONAL PROGRAMS CHAIRPERSON CANDIDATE

Courtney Johnson University of Maryland

Graduate Student

The society plans to graduate 10,000 black engineers annually by the year 2025. If elected/appointed how do you plan to utilize your position to help NSBE achieve this goal? If elected, the focus of my term as National Programs Chair will be to utilize the Programs Zone to create a

strategic plan of goals that target the overarching 2025 goal. Ever since we have implemented the 2025

goal, chapters and membership has continuously asked what they can do to impact the goal in a powerful

way. I believe that the Programs Zone can create the path to do this. One way we can do this is by giving

the membership different templates they can utilize to address high school students exposing them to

engineering. High school students would be the target because the individuals who will be graduating in

2025 are currently in 9th and 10th grade. Exposing as many of them to engineering as possible could

drastically impact the incoming classes of Black engineering students. Also, we could have chapters extend

their study sessions, extending our Retention program, to high school students in the community to assist

them with their science and mathematics classes, preparing them for their current and future classes.

SAT/ACT prep can be hosted as well by NSBE chapters to increase the students chances of being admitted

into engineering programs.

Select one of the NSBE Core Values and explain how you have demonstrated the NSBE Core Value. Community is the Core Value through my current NSBE Leadership position as R1 Programs Chair. The

Community Core Value is defined as creating environments that nurture individual growth and collective

success. As the Programs Zone lead, I believe it is my job to do just that. We are a team that creates the

content and path of the programs needed for the region that year. I consistently utilize my team to make

important decisions that would impact the region. I also give them leeway to create different initiatives

through their position and collaborate with others in the different zones make sure the program is logistically

sound and effective. As a society, we should motivate each other to be their best. That moves us forward to

achieve our overall goals. Our culture is community over all to push us to excel academically, succeed

professionally, and positively impact the community.

NATIONAL TREASURER CANDIDATE

The society plans to graduate 10,000 black engineers annually by the year 2025. If elected/appointed how do you plan to utilize your position to help NSBE achieve this goal? The financial status and allocations of an organization tell you a lot about the focus, direction,

and efficiency of that organization. NSBE, though student-run, is not very different. If the

society plans to graduate 10,000 black engineers annually by 2025, it needs to do so

strategically, within its means, and leveraging the resources within the organization as well

as that of partnerships. Our most valuable asset is our membership and though increasing

the number is essential to achieving the 2025 goal, the quality and success of those

graduating is just as essential to ensure continued progress. I plan to utilize my position to

provide continuity to the plans for financial vitality from the previous National Treasurer while

working within our means to support the quality of membership.

Select one of the NSBE Core Values and explain how you have demonstrated the NSBE Core Value. As Region 1 Chairperson, I serve a diverse set of chapters. The geographical zones each

have a different set of needs and different types of schools also have different types of

challenges. Within this role, empathy served me best as a means to understand the

difficulties different chapters were facing as well as approach them with the chapter

presidents to find solutions. I find listening and understanding to be most valuable in

supporting chapters since providing resources or simply advice is more effective when one

has a thorough understanding of the issue. This understanding isn’t extended only to the

chapter but also to all the stakeholders of the conversation as well as the conditions

surrounding the challenge. With this in mind, the solutions we came up with were frequently

able to satisfy not just the current needs of the chapter but also curate favorable relationships

for the future.

NATIONAL MEMBERSHIP CHAIRPERSON CANDIDATE

Darius Carter

University of Virginia Mechanical Engineering

Graduate Student

The society plans to graduate 10,000 black engineers annually by the year 2025. If elected/appointed how do you plan to utilize your position to help NSBE achieve this goal? As membership chair, I am responsible for growing the membership base of NSBE. I will utilize my

position to both increase NSBE's exposure, as well as analyze the memberships' needs. A great way

to increase NSBE's impact would be to increase awareness of the organization to African Americans.

I will work on a marketing campaign with the regions to amplify their efforts to attract new chapters, as

well as pair up recently chartered and activated chapters with established ones. To make societal

changes for our membership, we need the data to back up our decisions. We will track and create

data trends from existing data. Using this data, we will create new questions for our membership to

get a complete picture of our membership. This will allow us to address the concerns and make sure

our members are succeeding and NSBE is providing the correct resources for our membership.

Select one of the NSBE Core Values and explain how you have demonstrated the NSBE Core Value. I have worked on the Exposure value in my current position and will focus on the empathy value for

NEB membership chair. As region 2 membership chair, I was able to grow our membership in all

demographics. I stand by the fact that the best chance to get to 10k African American engineers

graduating annually is to expose as many African Americans to STEM and NSBE. I gathered

recommendations of potential chapter locations and sent out information to relevant parties at this

location. I also assisted interested parties every step of the way in starting their NSBE chapters. In the

role as NEB membership chair, I will leverage empathy to gauge our membership needs. I will create

a streamline way to collect data from our membership. With the trends we find, I will push for societal

change to provide the necessary resources. In order to increase our membership affectively, we need

to provide value and satisfaction to our members.

The society plans to graduate 10,000 black engineers annually by the year 2025. If elected/appointed how do you plan to utilize your position to help NSBE achieve this goal? The goal of graduating 10,000 black engineers by the year 2025 is inspiring and very possible when a

strategic approach is taken. If I am elected as the national finance chairperson, I will be working closely

with our corporate partners and students to understand the student's barriers to success and

how we can better prepare our students. Understanding the student's perspective will allow

myself and my fellow board members to better assess the challenges, financial or not, that students are

experiencing. Moreover, understanding our partners allows NSBE to cultivate the relationships that help

provide the opportunities and economic assistance that can allow students to focus more on the goal

itself. Last but not least, if I am elected as national finance chairperson, I plan to give international

students a well-defined and strategic outlook towards their academic and professional careers by

understanding the international student dilemma from the perspective of students and our corporate

partners to ensure that we are setting our international members up for graduation. Overall, I plan to

leverage communication and understanding between students and NSBE's corporate partners

to pinpoint problems and inefficiencies that hold the 10,000 by 2025 goal back. Select one of the NSBE Core Values and explain how you have demonstrated the NSBE Core Value. Exposure. As the regional finance chairperson for region V, I consistently focused on ensuring that we

as a region were putting our students in the best situation for success. While the career gave students

access to a plethora of opportunities, I hoped to do more. One way that I was able to help expose

membership to both graduate schools and major corporations was through personal introductions at

the FRC career fair. This allowed me to leverage my previous experiences with the recruiters to relieve

some student stresses that may have been present before the first interaction. As important as the

career fair was to getting students exposed to the opportunities available, I have strived to impart my

knowledge of the value of networking to students across the region. This includes the opening session

speech that I was fortunate to deliver at r5 FRC where I discussed the value of networking at our age.

Moreover, I have given 3 presentations to NSBE students about how they can leverage LinkedIn to be

successful at the upcoming convention. Overall, my role this year has allowed me to focus on exposing

the great membership that we have to the abundance of opportunities in engineering.

NATIONAL PUBLIC RELATIONS CHAIRPERSON CANDIDATE

The society plans to graduate 10,000 black engineers annually by the year 2025. If elected/appointed how do you plan to utilize your position to help NSBE achieve this goal? If elected as Public Relations Chair, I would use my position to increase the visibility of NSBE in order

to increase membership engagement, to capture a larger audience, and to further brand NSBE.

Increasing membership engagement through highlighting chapters/members, Which Region Reigns

Supreme campaigns such as why members joined NSBE, and by creating transparency within our

leadership is important in order to unite our society and get people excited towards our goal. Capturing

a larger audience is important in order for us to extend our presence and gain supporters such as

schools, companies, and people who can help is in our journey towards our goal. Lastly, by branding

NSBE more through creating brand standards, being consistent throughout chapters, and showing

people that we stand for our cause and our unique struggles in themselves, we show that we are all

united under NSBE and believe in reaching this goal Select one of the NSBE Core Values and explain how you have demonstrated the NSBE Core Value. The NSBE core value that I have demonstrated through my leadership can best be reflected through

exposure, which is presenting opportunities in engineering to a diverse cross-section of the black

populace. Currently, I serve as Region VI Secretary where I lead the Communications Zone which

consists of the Public Relations and Telecommunications Chair. In my role, I made it my duty to

compose emails which were sent out twice a month to membership where I updated Region VI of job

opportunities, I created and executed campaigns for our Fall and Regional Conference opportunities,

as well as made sure all of our social media handles as well as our website had this information. By

keeping the Region VI membership updated with leadership opportunities, job opportunities, and a

chance to build connections, I personally tried to fulfill the NSBE mission while also hoping to see our

membership take advantage of these opportunities. I also have positioned myself in the Graduate

Engineering marketing team of my school as an intern, where my role as Region VI Secretary and

knowledge of the black engineering demographic nationally allowed me to help my PWI to market

graduates studies to African Americans and strive towards our goal.

NATIONAL ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE CHAIRPERSON CANDIDATE

Malik Majette

North Carolina State University

Computer Science Junior

The society plans to graduate 10,000 black engineers annually by the year 2025. If elected/appointed how do you plan to utilize your position to help NSBE achieve this goal? Academic Excellence is an integral part of NSBE achieving our 2025 goal. Currently our annual

graduation rate is not completely on track to graduate 10,000 black engineers in 7 years. That means

we can and should be doing something different, something out-of-the-box. As a national leader I will

use my position to employ the new things I have seen work on the chapter and regional level. That

includes stronger PCI and AEx collaboration. The graduating class of 2025 are about to enter the 9th

grade and this is the time for them to start excelling in pre-calculus and hard sciences. NSBE can play

an integral part in ensuring that pre-college students have the academic support they need to not just

be interested in engineering, but develop the resume and skills needed to be accepted into an

engineering program. I believe these type of creative, cross-position, initiatives are necessary to change

the trajectory of the data we are analyzing to measure success in the society. Select one of the NSBE Core Values and explain how you have demonstrated the NSBE Core Value. Since joining my chapter executive board as the Academic Excellence Chair, exposure has been a key

focus of my position. Academic excellence comes in a variety of forms and it sometimes it takes more

than just the resources in NSBE to help someone be academically excellent. That is why exposing the

NSBE mission to engineering departments and teaching staff across my campus was important to

collect the tools my chapter needed. Now NC State has dedicated physics and chemistry tutors

department heads have become an advocate for NSBE. Furthermore, I have practiced exposure

through the organizations I collaborate with. As Regional AEx Chair I developed a new FRC competition

in partnership with a local black-owned STEM organization, STEMedia. Their mission is also to increase

STEM exposure through social media and creative art outlets. Our joint competition not only allowed

them to learn more about NSBE and use their platform to spread our brand, but NSBE members were

also exposed to the creative engineering-driven content that STEMedia produces.

NATIONAL TORCH CHAIRPERSON CANDIDATE

Osagie Ero

Mathematics Senior

The society plans to graduate 10,000 black engineers annually by the year 2025. If elected/appointed how do you plan to utilize your position to help NSBE achieve this goal? The purpose of Torch is to have events that technically develop the community while giving members

and sponsors an opportunity to be involved and engaged. In order to reach and surpass the goal of

graduating 10,000 black engineers by 2025, it will require the collaboration of outside partners and

organizations. As National Torch Chair, I will continue the to strengthen the bond between what I call

the three C’s. Chapters, Companies, and the Community will all play an important role in us reaching

the 2025 goal. I will continue to build upon the work of my predecessors by encouraging regional Torch

chairs to host Walks for Education. In addition I will come up with policies that will utilize the strengths

for each region. For example, Region 6 is blessed with some of the nation’s renowned technological

companies and institutions. NSBE is in a unique position to collaborate with tech companies such as

Google in order to further our mission. Programs that give Google a chance to interface with the

community such as A Walk for Education or a mentorship program will get us closer to our 2025 goal. Select one of the NSBE Core Values and explain how you have demonstrated the NSBE Core Value. I believe exposure is the number one important thing when it comes to fostering academic black

excellence. I was exposed to computer science later in my academic career when I was in college. If it

wasn’t for the exposure I received from my peers, I would have missed out on becoming an engineer.

I take it upon myself to expose others to engineering and computer science. For example, I have started

an organization called HackSC Jr. that uses hackathons as a vector of exposure to engineering and

computer science. HackSC Jr. creates a space for children to tinker, develop and explore engineering.

Out of the over 300 participants in our hackathons, over 40% was African-American. The majority of

the black students have said this was their first exposure to computer science and engineering. In

addition, the majority of them have said that they are interested in learning more about engineering.

This to me exemplifies my commitment to enriching the next generation with the power of knowledge

and engineering.

NATIONAL PRE-COLLEGE INITIATIVE CHAIRPERSON CANDIDATE

Eddie Edochie University of Louisiana at

The society plans to graduate 10,000 black engineers annually by the year 2025. If elected/appointed how do you plan to utilize your position to help NSBE achieve this goal? If elected as the NEB Pre-Collegiate Initiative chair, my major focus would be to devise a strategic plan

focused on the NSBE Jr. demographic aimed at helping NSBE understand what metrics need to be

met for PCI members at levels of education.

Beyond establishing the standards, a shift in focus is required for NSBE collegiate chapters to place a

major emphasis on PCI recruitment and continued participation through direct mentoring between the

collegiate members and PCI members. Another major focus would be analyzing the NSBE pipeline

and understanding how NSBE as an organization, can create a structure to generate consistent flow of

members from the start of the NSBE careers as NSBE Jr. participants to Professional members. A

huge part of this would be accomplished by directly linking NSBE SEEK camps to city wide NSBE Jr.,

Collegiate and Professional Chapters. In 2017, NSBE SEEK served over 15,000 students and this

could be serve as a major influx to assisting NSBE consistently achieve over 10K by 2025.

Overall, 10K by 2025 is a goal which requires NSBE to actively triple the number of graduating black

engineers and this must be pursued aggressively for this goal to be achieved.

Select one of the NSBE Core Values and explain how you have demonstrated the NSBE Core Value. Out of NSBE core values, the one that stands out to me the most is the value of our NSBE communities.

Within NSBE, communities exist -on collegiate, regional and national levels- that assist members to

thrive in their endeavors. Joining NSBE in 2014, I was met by a chapter divided by the nationalities of

its members. This had adverse effects on the chapter and membership as membership attendance and

participation were at an all time low. With the system in place, we had two separate NSBE communities

as opposed to one big community. Joining the board the next year, my ultimate focus was rebuilding

and reuniting our NSBE community. Numerically, this goal was considered achieved as our average

membership attendance to meetings quadrupled. Participation increased massively as well, through

mentoring initiatives in this community. Because of this new harmonic community, membership

excellence grew in very conspicuous ways through academic excellence and exposure to professional

opportunities. Most importantly, our new found community has been able to grow by establishing a

NSBE Jr. chapter which we serve in an effort to give back to our community by ensuring the moral,

academic and professional growth of this new demographic
