By Nick Burrows August 2018 The last couple of months have been a whirlwind of change for me. In the past 10 weeks I have gotten married, lost my job, battled unemploy-ment, and started a new job. Add to that, my daughter is playing soft-ball and between practices, City League games and tournaments, for at least 4 out of 7 days a week, I seem to be doing something related to softball. All of this change, stress, and transition has been a pretty sig-nificant burden on my energy and I have forgotten to write articles for the Link. It wasn’t the best time for the Senior Warden to go silent. As you all know, in May, Pastor Susan went on a medical leave of absence. So, when I haven’t been dealing wit the life events I discussed above, I, along with the Vestry, have been trying to apply a tourniquet to our church. We wouldn’t have been able to do as well as we have if it were-n’t for Laurie in the office. We owe her a HUGE debt of gratitude for taking on far more than I am sure is in her job description. Also, thanks to Pastors Gina Herman, Deb Adams, and Joseph Farnes for serving as supply clergy throughout the summer. I want to take the rest of my space to communicate the Vestry’s plans for the rest of the summer. First of all, plans for late August and into September all depend on the progress of Pastor Susan’s treatment and recovery. Speaking of which, I had the pleasure of seeing Pastor Susan a couple of weeks ago and spoke to her for about an hour. She is in ex-cellent spirits and has found a doctor in Salt Lake City and is very opti-mistic. Her heart wants to be at work and with this wonderful congre-gation, but right now her body simply isn’t allowing it. She sends her love and appreciation for all of the cards, tokens, visits, prayers, and thoughts. Sorry, back to what I was talking about – the plans for the rest of the summer. In August we will be alternating between Holy Eucharist and Morning Prayer. We will also have a Morning Prayer service on Septem-ber 2, which is Labor Day weekend. September 9 is Rally Day and we hope it will be a Holy Eucharist service. Through this day, all Sunday services will be at 9 am. When the Vestry meets in August we will dis-cuss how we will proceed after Rally Day. At this point in time, the Ves-try will make two sets of plans – one if Pastor Susan has returned and the other if she has not. I wish I could communicate something more concrete, but that’s the best I can do. Finally, I want to give thanks for the life of Roland Smith. Roland was so generous with his time, talent, and treasure – not just to our church, but to the community as a whole. He will definitely be missed.

The St. Luke’s Prayer Chain

“This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will,

he hears us.” 1 John 5:14 The St. Luke’s Prayer Chain is made up of church members who are called to the ministry of prayer. Any member of the Prayer Chain may be called to initiate a “prayer request.” This request is then passed along the chain until it returns to the member who received the call. (If one member is unavailable to receive the call, Prayer Chain members will call the following person on the list.) The Prayer Chain members will keep all prayer requests confidential. Thanks to Deacon Haydie for her quick thinking on Wednesday, July 18th, to make sure that all our parishioners had access to the worship service.

Thank you to all of the church members who have been patiently waiting for the construction to slow down and give us access to the building again.

Thank you to Robert Barthel, our former organist, who is leaving us to con-tinue to pursue his musical education at the University of Kansas. To him and his wife Sara, we were very blessed to have your time and talents.

Thank you to Laurie for making a “polite phone call” to the city offices and restoring access to St. Luke’s!
