A gift which was given not just once, but which continues to renew and give life to the Church today. A gift that keeps on giving. In the Gospel, Jesus teaches His disciples about the coming of the Spirit. The Spirit stands beside them and enables them to be witnesses. As witnesses, we will be led to the truth. We have little idea of what it must have been like for the Apostles. The first witnesses to the Good News of the Resurrection. How they must have felt pain, confusion, and bewilderment after the death of Jesus. Their Lord and Master, who they had followed for three years, had been taken from them, and crucified. Dying the shameful death of a criminal. And then there were reports that He had risen. Indeed, a bit later, Jesus came and stood in their midst, and proved to them that He was indeed risen from the dead. This must have been a boost for them. But then, a double blow. He left them a second time. Taken up into heaven. Not to return in three days again, either. They are orphans again. But, as so often happens with the Christian story, that was not the end. For, as we have just read, when Pentecost Day came around, the Holy Spirit was sent to the Apostles, just as Jesus had promised. Jesus calls the Holy Spirit ‘the Advocate’. An advocate is one who literally stands beside you, and speaks in your name. And at once, the Holy Spirit had this effect on the life of the Apostles. Just as easy a trap to fall into is the trap of thinking that Pentecost was an event of long ago. It is not. The gift of the Holy Spirit to the Church at Pentecost is not just an event of long ago. It is an event of today. It is by the power and work of the Spirit that we are called together as Church. Just as the Holy Spirit was advocate for the first Apostles - the gift given to them to stand beside them and give them the grace to proclaim the Good News of Salvation – so too, that same Gift of the Spirit is given to us today. In Baptism and Confirmation, we are given the gift of the Spirit, so that we too may be witnesses – as today’s Gospel names us. By the power of the Spirit, we too proclaim that Jesus Christ who was dead, is now risen and has destroyed death forever. Extract: Pastoral Liturgy Vol 48 (2) 2018. On this Pentecost Sunday, we come to the end of our great season of Easter and celebrate the gift of the Spirit to the Church. For, as we have just read,

when Pentecost Day came around, the Holy Spirit was sent to the Apostles, just as Jesus had promised. Jesus calls the Holy Spirit ‘the Advocate’. An advocate is one who literally stands beside you, and speaks in your name. And at once, the Holy Spirit had this effect on the life of the Apostles. THE MONTH OF MAY The Month of May is a month of special devotions dedicated to Mary the Mother of Jesus. Our Heavenly Mother loves us, cares for us and through our prayers points us to Jesus and intercedes for us and all our needs. The Rosary will be recited 25 minutes before each weekend Mass. Make this month a special prayer month.
