The Hon. Mark Pearson MLCMark Pearson is the first Australian Member of Parliament to be elected on an animal justice platform. As the successful candidate for the Animal Justice Party, he was elected to the NSW Legislative Council in March 2015.

Prior to entering parliament, Mark was the Executive Director of Animal Liberation in Australia. Before this he had been Team Leader of the Newcastle Community Mental Health Service in Newcastle and worked as a Clinical Acute Adult Psychiatric Nurse Specialist.

For the past 22 years Mark has engaged in animal advocacy, activism and campaign work. Two recent successes have been the phase out of ‘mulesing’ in sheep and convincing the Russian Federation to ban imports of kangaroo meat.

Bruce PoonBruce Poon is our national Animal Justice Party president.

Bruce is an IT Project Manager who has been involved in animal, environmental and community work most of his adult life. He has been vegetarian or vegan for over 28 years and has worked as a volunteer for Vegetarian Victoria.

Bruce has spoken in Victoria, Australia and overseas on the environmental, social, ethical, health and economic impacts of dietary choices and authored a brochure on these topics which has been circulated to over 165,000 people.

Bruce has previously stood as a candidate for the AJP and will be standing again next month for the Victorian state elections.

Teresa RomanovskyTeresa is currently the AJP Regional Group Leader for the Sydney East & Inner West group. Prior to taking up this role Teresa spent two years as a volunteer Board Member and Head of Cat Rehoming for Maggie’s Rescue.

In her day job, Teresa is the Director of a boutique recruitment agency and has spent 20 years in the industry working for a variety of large and small businesses. Her current role is 2iC to the Managing Director, leading a team of experienced recruitment professionals and providing strategic direction to the business. Teresa has been vegan for 5 years and is slave to 3 rescue cats, Osiris, Blinky & Boots, and rescue bunny Archie.

Patricia JenkinsPatricia has been vegetarian or vegan for over 30 years, has a Masters Degree in Journalism and a Postgrad Dip in Film & TV (Producing), and has been involved with the Animal Justice Party for two years, currently volunteering in the roles of Victorian and National Media Manager.

Miranda SmithMiranda has a Masters degree in Marketing, over 10 years senior management experience in marketing, and has recently established her own marketing consulting business. Miranda has been involved with the Animal Justice Party for five years and currently volunteers in the role of National Marketing Manager as well as a member of both

the Victorian and National Committees.

Emma HurstEmma Hurst is a registered psychologist and the Animal Justice Party Campaign Manager, Media Officer at People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals Australia (PETA)

Emma is our lead candidate for the Senate in next year’s State election in March.

Bryn HillsBryn Hills is convenor of the Ballarat AJP sub branch and has been a member of the Party for approximately 5 years. He is candidate for the Party in the seat of Wendouree for the upcoming Victorian election in November of this year.

Bryn is also the founder of the Ballarat Vegan festival and is busily planning the 4th instalment of this Council supported

community based event. Bryn is also a member of the Ballarat Animal Advocates association and is active in the animal rights community.

Geoff RussellGeoff has been involved in animal rights activism since the middle of the 1980s, mostly with Animal Liberation but also Animals Australia. He has organised duck rescue campaigns, conferences, petititions and all of the usual traditional activist activities.

Over 30 years of this has taught him that these methods are woefully inadequate, as evidenced by the rising per-capita consumption of meat in Australia over most of this period. His experiences in South Australia of having politicians promise policy changes in return for preferences has shown him that politics is our best hope of reversing this trend.

David RitterDavid Ritter is the Chief Executive Officer of Greenpeace Australia Pacific. He has been with Greenpeace for nine years, campaigning to secure an earth capable of nurturing life in all its amazing diversity.

Prior to joining Greenpeace, David worked as an academic and a lawyer in both commercial and native title practices.

David is a widely published commentator on politics, law, history and current affairs. He is an honorary fellow of the Faculty of Law of The University of Western Australia and an associate of the Institute for Democracy and Human Rights at The University of Sydney. He is an affiliate of both the Sydney Environment Institute and the Sydney Democracy Network.

Jesse MarksJesse Marks is Director of Farmed Animal Advocacy, Animals Australia.

Jesse brings a diverse range of experiences to Animals Australia, with a background in teaching, psychology and a passion for campaigning.

Since stepping into the animal protection movement in the early 2000’s, Jesse has been involved in almost every aspect of animal advocacy. He’s run everything from leafleting sessions to national rallies. He is a fellow of the Australian Progress Campaign Fellowship and has spoken at national and international conferences on topics ranging from campaign strategy and digital campaigning, to effective communication and outreach.

When not advocating for animals, Jesse loves exploring Melbourne on his bike, rock climbing, and hanging out with his dog, Nina.

Clifton RobertsClifton Roberts the United States CEO of the Humane Party became the party’s first presidential candidate on November 1, 2015.

Clifton is also Sr. Manager - Ethics & Legal Compliance, for Intel Corporation.

The Humane Party was established in 2009 and is located in Los Angeles, California. It is the first political party in the USA committed to the rights for all animals, and a sustainable eco-friendly economy.

Roberts works tirelessly to raise awareness in around the U.S. His son, who is 21, has been vegan since the age of 14 and his 11-year-old daughter, Eden, has been vegan since birth.

Sebastiaan WolswinkelParty for the Animals, NetherlandsSebastiaan Wolswinkel is President of the youth wing from the Dutch Party for the Animals and a Mathematics teacher.

Sebastiaan is visiting Australia as a guest of the Animal Justice Party, he will be presenting at our conference and helping us

to get an AJP youth wing up and running in Australia.

With 3.2% of the vote at the general election, 2017, the Dutch Party holds 5 of the 150 House of Representatives’s seats. In the Senate it has 2 of the 75 seats and in the European Parliament it has 1 of the 26 seats the Netherlands constituency allocates.

Prince Khaled bin AlwaleedPrince Khaled bin Alwaleed is Founding Chairman and CEO, KBW Ventures focusing exclusively on venture capital, value creation and growth equity

As a figure of business, technology enthusiast, and investor, Khaled bin Alwaleed bin Talal is a firm proponent of clean

energy, healthy living, the humane treatment of animals, and a motivated voice for Middle East entrepreneurs.

A member of the Saudi Arabian royal family, Khaled was born in California and spent his youth in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia’s capital.

Beyond his work, Khaled is Chairman of the elected Saudi Green Building Forum (SGBF) Trustee Board, where he will work to help further advance Saudi Arabia’s green building initiative.

Peter ChenDr Peter John Chen is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Government and International Relations where he teaches Australian and regional politics, media politics, and public policy.  

He is the author of Animal Welfare in Australia: Politics and Policy (2016) and Australian Politics in a Digital Age (2013) and the co-editor of Double Disillusion: The 2016 Australian Federal Election (2018).

Tracey WillowTracey graduated from social work in 1991 has had extensive project management experience and hands worked primarily in the non-government sector in the areas of family domestic violence, child protection and access to justice.

Since 2006, Tracey has successfully managed small and medium size non-government organisations such as Women’s Domestic Violence Advocacy Service, Staying Home Leaving Violence Broken Hill, and the Far West Cooperative Legal Service Delivery Regional Strategy.   

Tracey volunteered with Broken Hill Pet Rescue, joined as a respite carer, and as a result, looked after 16 dogs. Tracy is currently co-collaborating on two children’s books about two of my rescue dogs - Teddy and Harriet.  Each book will tell a different story and contribute to BHPR’s fundraising strategy.

Sebastiaan Wolswinkel is a Mathematics teacher and chairman of the political youth organization of the Dutch Party for the Animals.

The animal rights movement must recognize the need to enter politics directly in order to bring about the systematic we strive for. Fortunately, our message has a surprising power to unify and excite citizens, and help them take a collective turn towards a compassionate society.

Not only will Sebastiaan lay out the logic behind this thinking, he will show that empirical proof is beginning to build up, by looking at a growing movement of Animal Welfare Parties which are forming throughout Europe and the rest of the world.

Workshop 1:

Sebastion Wolswinkel– “Organising - the Science they don’t want you to learn”Our societies are fragmented and divided. Of all the strangers we come across every day, the proportion we interact with is negligible. Our society is supposedly democratic, and most of our lives are spent in institutions that are completely hierarchical - schools, companies, and much of the public sector too. To create a movement, do you accept those constraints or do you overcome them? The golden rule for bringing about positive change has always been, “organise”, and there is a lot of insight available into how this can be done.

During his time as Chairman, the number of members, volunteers and activities has all doubled, in direct opposition to the current trend within youth organisations the Netherlands. Having been recently re-elected, he is starting to focus more on other countries, to use his thorough understanding about how to engage, excite and activate youngsters to help sister parties of the Partij voor de Dieren to set up their own youth wings, aware that only a global movement will bring about the structural change that generations who want to see out the century so desperately require. Sebastiaan Wolswinkel is a Mathematics teacher and chairman of the political youth organization of the Dutch Party for the Animals. Sebastiaan is visiting Australia as a guest of the Animal Justice Party, he will be helping us to get an AJP youth wing up and running in Australia.

Workshop 2:

Patricia Jenkins– Effective Media Strategies And Writing Newsworthy

Media Releases.The ability to write an informative, enticing and well-written media release is invaluable for the Animal Justice Party and provides an opportunity for free widespread publicity. Competition for news space or air-time is always fierce when it comes to media coverage so writing newsworthy media releases is critical in grabbing a journalist’s attention. In this workshop you’ll learn about the key criteria to a successful media strategy, top tips for writing effective media releases, and an opportunity to put those top tips into practice. Please bring your lap top!

Workshop 3:

Teresa Romanovsky - How Zero Waste and AJP Policies Interwine For An

Environmentally Friendly Future. The AJP is often assumed to be a single issue party, many people, even party members, struggle to articulate the connection between animal protection and the environment, when in fact the two are closely intertwined. There is a growing awareness of how our consumerist actions are choking our planet, destroying both fauna and flora, damaging our health and costing millions in tax payer money to clean up. We have an opportunity to draw in disillusioned Greens supporters by still continuing to lead on animal protection that fully incorporates the environment and thåe effect on all animals – human and non-human. Because reducing waste is something we can all do, it’s easier to sell the concept of how our policies have a positive impact on the environment overall and that it’s not just about giving up eating animals. We have an opportunity to reach non vegans who still care about wildlife and the environment.

Teresa is an AJP Regional Group Leader for Sydney East & Inner West Group and Director of Recruitment for a recruitment agency. She has been a vegan for 5 years, is a slave to 3 cats and a bunny and implementing many changes to her own habits to create a better world.

Workshop 4:

Emma Hurst – Campaigning to Win We know what we want, but how do we get it? This workshop will look at successful campaigns and the strategies used to win them. Develop a better understanding of various tactics and when to use them, tools such as power mapping, critical path analysis, framing, and political lobbying, and gain insight into behaviour change techniques used by psychologists to create a better world for animals. One or two current AJP campaigns will also be selected and used as an example campaign. 

Psychologist, vegan, and goldmedal winning bodybuilder Emma Hurst, is the lead candidate on the AJPNSWs legislative Council ticket.

Workshop 5:

Miranda Smith - On the Candidate Campaign Trail – Developing an

integrated candidate marketing and communications strategy to connect with constituents and build the vote.

Candidates play a critical role in building Party support, in increasing votes on election day and in ultimately winning seats in parliament. There are many factors involved in developing an effective candidate marketing and communications strategy. From the types of campaign activities undertaken, selection of communication channels, and key messages delivered to the right people at the right time, all seamlessly happening alongside broader state-wide campaigns. This workshop will provide an opportunity to learn the key criteria for a successful candidate campaign, hear about successful political campaigns from around the world and provide practical advice for creating a vote winning campaign. If you’re running as a candidate or thinking about it, then this is the workshop for you!

Workshop 6:

Bruce Poon - Organising Skills For Candidates And Members Organising has as a core goal the generation of power for an  organisation, allowing it to influence key decision-makers on a range of issues over time. A great deal of standard techniques have developed over the last eighty year of community and union organising. We will look at and practice a few of these in order to improve and build our party.Bruce Poon is the President of the Animal Justice Party.

This is a brief presentation on the reaction to the film’s release and some of  the campaign work that has resulted from the film’s release. It is a documentary about Australia’s once-beloved icon, now seen as a pest threatening farmers.

AustraliaJesse Marks will be talking about how to win campaigns for animals. Campaigns don’t win themselves. If we want to be the strongest voice for animals we need good strategy. Good strategy can turn a momentous challenge into a momentous win. Luckily, there are simple tools and ideas everyone can use to harness effective strategies. In this presentation, Jesse will share tools he’s found useful in planning advocacy initiatives and give practical examples of how Animals Australia has implemented these to win campaigns.

What principles and practices are important for building and sustaining a group that people want to keep coming to? How can we use conflict resolution to manage complex issues that arise in groups? What can we learn from each other?

Workshop 2: (Part A 45min)

Geoff Russell - Winning ... Getting votes from a wider demographicA high proportion (~75%) of Australians believe the climate is changing and most believe that humans are responsible. Yet the Greens only polled about 10% in the 2016 Federal Election. Clearly there is room for a party with an evidence based climate policy to attract votes. A rational climate policy involves 3 planks: Animal agriculture, Energy, Land use. AJP has two of those covered, but not Energy. The Green’s energy policy ignores the impacts of renewables on the environment ... via increased mining and the direct death and injuries to animals via wind farms, flooded valleys (hydro) and burning biomass (harvesting trees and other crops for fuel). Nuclear power, under any rational assessment, is the most animal friendly and effective power source on the planet and a rational energy policy would explicitly support it.

Bryn Hills - The Vegan Clause “The Vegan Clause, a central plank and core philosophy of our Party, or an inhibiting factor in attracting a diverse range of potential candidates.”Wth numerous references to a plant based society throughout the AJP policy document it would seem incumbent on anyone promoting the Party to adhere to the ideals that are contained in the policies and ideas that we are asking Australians to support.According to Roy Morgan research, the percentage of Australians who identify as vegetarian/vegan is 2.1 million or 11.2% of the population. This percentage appears to be continually increasing and where a plant based or vegan way of life used to be considered fringe, it is moving ever closer to the mainstream.This cultural shift as a snap shot of Australian society is interesting in context of the AJPs aims of bringing more people on board and in support of a kinder, greener and fairer Australia.

Peter Chen Political Scientists Workshop – “Small party stratgies: lessons from political science” In this interactive session, three Australian political scientists provide their observations and insights about what makes small political parties successful and have longevity in the Australian political environment.  Dr Peter John Chen is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Government and International Relations where he teaches Australian and regional politics, media politics, and public policy.  He is the author of Animal Welfare in Australia: Politics and Policy (2016) and Australian Politics in a Digital Age (2013) and the co-editor of Double Disillusion: The 2016 Australian Federal Election (2018).
