From the Director
Dear Parents,
Thank you for choosing Horizon Christian School for your child. We will, with God’s help, be the best staff and
provide the best programs possible. The mission of HCS is to meet the needs of families in our community and we
endeavor to do so by providing programs that are relevant to those needs.
Your involvement is very important to a successful year for your child and our school. Programs, events and
fundraisers help to create a positive experience for our children. The entire staff sincerely appreciates the time
dedications and effort that each parents provides.
This year HCS is working on updating and improving our building. We are still awaiting the arrival of new carpeting
that has been promised by a leading manufacturer. Please pray that the materials will come in and that this project
will go smoothly over the coming months. It is a large task as our building is about 15,000 square feet.
The parent handbook is designed to help you understand the practices and policies of our school. Our doors will
always be open to assist you and your family in any way possible. Please feel free to call upon us or stop in at any
time.
In His Service,

From the School Board
Welcome Parents!
We are glad you have chosen to send your child to Horizon Christian School which is a ministry of Horizon
Baptist Church. We will try to prove ourselves worthy of the trust you have shown by providing your child
with a safe, loving environment in which to learn. More importantly, you will find that God is at work here.
Godly instruction provides the foundation for all our teaching and programs.
Our church and school staff welcome this opportunity to serve you and your child. Pastor Sid Hopkins is going
to serve as the School Chaplain to be available to you and your family as you might have need of him. This is
another way that our church wants to reach out and minister to your whole family whether you are a member
of our church or not. While your child is in our school program, we want to consider you a part of our extended
family.
If you do not already have a place to worship we hope you will come and visit with us. You will find us to be
a God centered, caring community of individuals who are excited about having the opportunity to extend to
you the same love, hope and joy we have received from the Lord. We extend to you a cordial invitation to
come and worship with us as our church family assembles to draw near to God through prayer, thoughtful
contemporary music, and inspiring relevant messages from God’s word. You are always welcome! By the
way, our dress is casual.
Yours in Christ,

I. GENERAL INFORMATION
Horizon Baptist Church
*ALL INFORMATION AND POLICIES IN THIS HANDBOOK HAVE BEEN REVIEWED AND APPROVED
BY THE HORIZON BAPTIST CHURCH ELDER BOARD
Vision Statement
Our vision is to be a church that develops passionate followers of
Jesus Christ.
Mission Statement
Our mission is to create an environment in which all people are given
the opportunity to encounter Jesus as their Lord and Savior.
9
Mission
The Christian School Program is part of the ministry of Horizon Baptist Church; therefore, it is based on Christian
principles and Biblical teachings. It proposes to provide an environment for the development of a child's social,
spiritual, physical and mental needs that is safe, happy, warm and loving. In our school, we want to help each child
grow and develop as Jesus did. We want to accept each child as he is - allowing him to grow in his own way, at his
own pace, according to individual needs. This will be done by providing learning activities in a Christian atmosphere
designed to assist children and their families to develop the mature Christian life.
Statement of Faith
We believe that the Bible is the infallible, verbally inspired Word of God and that it is, therefore, our final authority in the matter of faith and practice.
We believe in the eternally existing, triune God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. We believe in the Deity of Jesus Christ, in His virgin birth, in His sinless life, in His miracles, in His
vicarious and atoning death through His shed blood, in His bodily resurrection and in His ascension to the right hand of the Father, where He now acts as Mediator and Advocate.
We believe in the personal, imminent return of our Lord Jesus Christ for His own, in His later return in power and glory with His own to reign in righteousness over the earth, and in the resurrection of both the saved and the unsaved...they that are saved unto the resurrection of life and they that are lost unto the resurrection of damnation.
We believe that Heaven is a place of eternal blessedness for the saved and that Hell is the place of eternal conscious punishment for the lost.
We believe that regeneration by the Holy Spirit is absolutely essential for the salvation of the lost and sinful men that all who receive the Lord Jesus Christ by faith alone are born again and become the children of God.
We believe in the present ministry of the Holy Spirit whose indwelling in all believers enables them to live Godly lives.
We believe in the spiritual unity of believers in our Lord Jesus Christ and in the necessity of all His followers maintaining good works as evidence of faith.
Goal
The goal of the Christian school ministry is to provide opportunities for each child to grow according to their
individual needs and God given abilities.
Objectives
To base our curriculum and activities on Biblical truth as revealed in Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior.
To protect the rights of each child.
To nurture and enhance the individuality and positive self-image of each child.
To help each child to learn to appreciate and respect the worth and dignity of each person.
To strive to make school a healthy, positive, creative and pleasant place for children.
To help children adjust to school and community life.
To support good relationships between the child and members of the family.
To encourage the child to have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and strive for holiness because He is holy.
To enrich understanding of the community, country and world.
To enable a child to differentiate between right and wrong in today’s rapidly changing society.
To introduce concepts in the following areas at the appropriate time for their growth: language, music and movement,
science, physical education, art and mathematics.
To evaluate daily.

Attendance, School Hours and Pick-up Policies
Parents are required to sign each child in and out each school day. Student attendance is recorded daily. A
digital system is in place for attendance. Parents will check in or out at the welcome center window or car
pool using a tablet or computer station \
Before School Care opens at 7:00 AM and ends at 9:30 AM. Children must be escorted into the welcome
center and signed in. The preschool program begins at 9:30 AM and ends at 1:30 PM. Morning carpool
drop-off begins at 9:20 AM (See carpool map for drop off locations.) Students need to be in their classroom
by 9:40 AM. Preschoolers not picked up by 1:45 will be placed in the After School program and the student
account will be charged accordingly. Emergency situations ONLY will be taken into consideration.
After school care begins at 1:30 for preschool and upon arrival for elementary students. An authorized adult
must come into the welcome center and check students out from the aftercare program. Late Fees will be
applied to accounts for students picked up after 6:10PM.
Please notify the school as soon as you realize you will be unable to pick your child u on time. Being the last
child at school can be traumatic. Your child's teacher or other member of the HCS staff will offer comfort
and special activities to help them pass the time.
Children will not be released to anyone other than the parent and those persons listed on the Application for
Enrollment. People authorized to pick up children will be given their own codes to do so. Do not share your
personal codes with others. The pickup person will be required to present (picture) identification the first
time they pick up... You may authorize people to pick up your child by including them on enrollment form
or sending in a signed note that includes the name, address and phone number of the new pick up person.
Parents are always allowed to pick up their personal children and give permission for others to do so. In the
event that a parent does not have the right to pick up their child, signed court documents must be on file with
the school stating such. It is important to keep the school office informed of any changes or issues regarding
child custody.
Discipline
Each classroom teacher has a discipline plan that is unique to the room. An interactive visual display will be
posted so children can “see” how their day is going. Discipline issues are taken care of when they happen
in each room, so that only an issue that requires parental help will be discussed further with parents.
Biting
Biting is a behavior that is common in children under three and there are many reasons why it occurs such
as teething, excitement or over stimulation, and frustration. A notice will always be sent to parents of the
biter and the child who is bitten. Children who bite are not “bad” or mean spirited. Steps are taken in the
classrooms to curb biting behavior and to console children who may be bitten. It is a policy of HCS to call
parents to pick up a child from school after the third biting incident within three months times. This actions
has proven to help in stopping the behavior.
Biting is not a typical behavior of children over the age of three years and may require alternate measures
to control.

Parent Statement of Cooperation
I agree to support the administration and teachers of Horizon Christian Preschool both publicly and privately
regarding the aims, ideals and philosophy of the school. I will fully cooperate with the policies, procedures and rules
of the school as described in the policy and procedure manuals and the parent handbook.
All school records, this statement and state health forms must be on file at the school before acceptance will be
granted. I understand that all students are accepted on a nine- week trial basis. It is understood that my child’s
attendance is a privilege and not a right. If at any time his/her or my conduct, cooperation with the school
authorities is not in keeping with the school’s requirements, the school reserves the right to terminate, at its
discretion, my child’s enrollment.
I give my support and permission to use reasonable discipline in the correction of my child. I will be kept informed of
disciplinary actions that may have been taken.
I give my permission to Horizon Christian School to submit to the State of Georgia the attendance records needed to
comply with the compulsory Education Law.
I understand that tuition will be paid as stated on the financial policy included in the application for enrollment. I
understand that there are penalties for late payment and a fee of $ $30.00 on returned checks. Any family account
having three or more returned checks will result in a “cash only” policy. In the event of termination, I will not expect
my child’s transcripts or other school records to be released until full payment is made. Should my child withdraw for
any reason I understand that books remain the property of the school. I understand that all application/book and
materials fees are non-refundable.
I give permission for my child to take part in all school activities and school-sponsored trips. I absolve the school from
liability to me or my child because of injury at the school or during any school activity on or off the premises. In case
of an accident or injury, I will be notified first. If I am not accessible, I hereby authorize the school to call my
physician and to follow his/her directions. If it is impossible to contact the physician, the school may take whatever
actions it deems are appropriate.
Should any legal action ever be taken against HCS or any employee or agent thereof on behalf of my child or myself,
and the school or its agent are not found at fault, I agree to pay any attorney fees, court fees, damages or other costs
that HCS or its agent should incur to defend against such action.
16
Health Requirements
Children should be able to participate in all activities of the school day - both indoors and outdoors. A child may be
excused from outdoor activities for a limited period of time if there is documentation that outdoor activity is medically
contraindicated or there is an occasional written request by the parent that the child be excused for a very limited
amount of time because of special circumstances.
Sick Policy
Horizon Christian School assumes that responsible parents will not send a child to school that is showing any signs of
illness such as fever, rash, pink eye, red throat, croup cough, green mucus, vomiting, etc. We are a well-child facility;
for the sake of the health of the other children and teachers in the school, we must insist that your child stay home
when she/he is exhibiting the above symptoms. Should any of the symptoms arise during the course of the school day,
a parent or other authorized person will be notified immediately to take the child home.
Returning To School
A child must be free of fever, diarrhea and/or vomiting for 24 hours without medication before returning to
school, unless otherwise prescribed by a physician’s note.
Injury and Medical Emergency
Minor injuries incurred at school will be documented on an injury report which will be sent home in the parent
communication folder, a copy will be maintained in the student file.
Parents will be notified and requested to pick up their child should they become ill or have a fever over 100 degrees.
Should a child become ill or injured requiring immediate medical attention the Gwinnett County 911 Emergency
Medical System will be activated immediately and parents or guardians will be notified. Patients will be transported
to Gwinnett Medical Center unless otherwise advised by emergency medical personnel.
Medications
Medication forms can be obtained from the school administrative assistant or on line, and must be filled out
COMPLETELY. Forms must be re-signed every TEN days. All medication must be supplied in original containers with
dosage instructions. Over the Counter medications will not be given by school staff without written instructions from
the child’s physician. No medications are to be kept or taken by a student. Violation of this policy is grounds for
student suspension. Please try to make arrangements to give your child his/her medications at home whenever
possible.
Communicable Diseases
Measles, mumps, chicken pox, head lice, ringworm or any other communicable disease should be reported to the
school office at once. A note from the Director will be sent home to all parents in a class that has reported a student
infected with any communicable disease listed above if they have been in attendance while contagious. A notice is
posted in the school hallway of diseases that must be reported to the Center for Disease Control.
17
Allergies
Please advise us of any food or medical allergies (including a description of the symptoms which occur) your child
may have. Complete the form provided by the office and supply any medications required. Emergency medications
will be kept in the office in a secure first aid cabinet.
Emergency Evacuation & Inclement Weather
A weather radio is maintained in the school office to alert the staff of any adverse weather conditions in our area.
Horizon Christian School will be closed or dismiss early when the Gwinnett County schools do so. There may be
occasion for the school to close when the county schools remain open due to power, water, parking or other adverse
conditions. Parents will be notified by our text system to notify of school closure.
Should it become necessary for students to be dismissed early from our building parents will be notified by our text
system to advise them of the dismissal and the circumstances for it.
Should a situation occur that requires our building to be “locked down” parents will be notified by our text system
telling them of the circumstances and when we expect children will be dismissed.
Parents who are unable to receive texts will be notified by telephone of these events.
Certificate of Immunization
The State of Georgia requires that a Certificate of Immunization form #3231 be on file for each student. Certificates
must be on file the first day of school and kept current throughout the year. Failure to provide current certificates
will result in your child's temporary suspension from the school. Your child may be reinstated when the necessary
form is submitted (tuition payments must be kept current during the suspension period to maintain your child's
enrollment in the program). HCS requires that all children enrolled in programs be vaccinated unless medically
exempt.
Breakfast
All students in the before care program who arrive by 8:30 will be served breakfast.
Lunch
Students may participate in the hot lunch program for an addition charge of $3.75 per day. A menu will be sent
home monthly with daily choices. Circle the choices for the days you wish to participate and send back in your child’s
communication folder with payment. All students will need to bring lunch each day if they are not participating in
the hot lunch program. Lunches from home must meet the USDA requirement or a lunch will be supplied from the
kitchen and an envelope will be sent for payment.
Afternoon Snack
All full time and after school students will be served snack in the afternoon immediately following nap rest or arrival
time.
INFANT FEEDING PLANS
Infant feeding plan forms are available at the office window. Each child’s plan will be posted in the classroom. A new
plan must be completed each month or whenever changes are necessary. Blank copies will be supplied in your
child’s folder.
18
USDA REQUIREMENT
1 serving of meat/meat alternatives
1 serving of grains/breads
2 servings of vegetables (must be 2 different vegetables), or 2 servings fruits (must be 2 different fruits), or 1 of each
ALL children will receive 2% milk with lunch.
Please do not send food that must be “prepared” for your child. Children should be able to eat their lunch with
minimal help from teachers. No soft drinks, grated cheese, or hard candy, please.
OUR SCHOOL IS A PEANUT/NUT FREE ENVIRONMENT-NO PEANUT BUTTER OR NUT PRODUCTS
Birthday Parties
Birthdays are big events in the lives of children and therefore we recognize this special day at school. If you would
like to bring a special party snack for your child's birthday celebration, please make prior arrangements with the
teacher. BE SURE THAT ITEMS PURCHASED ARE NOT PROCESSED IN A PLANT THAT PROCESSES PEANUTS OR NUT
PRODUCTS.
Clothing
School is messy! We roll in grass, dig in dirt, paint with hands and feet, get wet, spill juice, cook with flour, serve our
own food--we’ll try anything once, just to learn from a new experience (regardless of the mess). Please dress your
child in comfortable clothing that you don’t mind having stained. Also, please bear in mind that bleach water is used
to sanitize all surfaces, toys, etc. Please do not send your child to school in any irreplaceable garments. Shoes are
required to be worn by all children each day. Tennis shoes are the best footwear for school; other types (dress
shoes, sandals, flip flops and crocs) do not protect little feet on the playground and are slippery on the tile floors.
The child should be able to easily manipulate all clothing. Buttons, zippers and belts in pants are best left for older
children. T-shirts and elasticized shorts and pants are ideal for young children. Self-esteem is greatly enhanced by
being able to “do it myself”.
We go outside almost every day, weather permitting. Please dress your child accordingly and send appropriate
outerwear when needed.
Potty Training
Children in diapers should wear only disposable diapers to school unless a condition exists which excludes them.
When your child is potty training, please send two sets of extra clothing each day (shoes, too). Preschool teachers
expect to help in the potty training process; please let them know when you begin. Children entering the three year
class should be toilet trained or in the process of training. “Pull Ups” should only be worn when children are almost
completely trained as they are very difficult to change when soiled. Also, please do not send little ones in “big girl” or
“big boy” pants until the process is complete and you have notified their classroom teacher of this momentous
achievement!
19
Toys from Home
Preschool students are allowed to bring their special blankets or stuffed animals to ease the transition between
home and school; however, it is the child’s responsibility to take care of his “lovey” while at preschool.
Do not allow children to bring toys, candy, money, jewelry, or electronics to school, these items tend to be
disruptive or may be dangerous for small children. Should you have an item that corresponds with a current
theme please check with your child's teacher about sharing that special item with the class.
Please bring these items during the first week of school:
One roll of paper towels
One box of tissues
One box of disposable wipes
One Box of Lysol wipes
Bottle of Sun Screen (no spray please)
Classroom supplies as noted on classroom supply list o n our web site www.horizonbaptist.net .
Teacher may supply a “wish list” for the classroom which is not required but much appreciated!
Please bring these items each day:

Parent Conferences
Teachers conduct conferences to inform parents of their student’s progress during the school year.
Should the need arise during the school year for additional conferences; arrangements may be made with or by the
teacher. If you need to talk to a teacher by phone, please write the teacher a note including times that would be
convent for her to call you. Please do not call to talk to a teacher during school hours unless it is an emergency.
Parent Volunteers/Visitors
The school is under electronic security at all times, to enter the school building you will need to sign in and out at the
reception area. To help maintain security, visitors are asked not to arrive or leave during carpool times.
We welcome parent volunteers in our classrooms. Each teacher will indicate days, times and activities when
additional help is needed.
Parents are encouraged to visit the school, eat lunch or observe our classes at any time. However, we ask that you
wait until after the first week of school to give your child the opportunity to adjust. Please notify the teacher prior to
your visit.
Substitute Teachers
The school needs to maintain an approved list of persons willing to substitute when a regular teacher is ill or cannot
come to work. Those wishing to substitute may get an employment application and instructions for criminal
background information from the receptionist. Please complete the forms and return them. You will be notified
when your name has been added to the approved sub list.

Communication
Most written communication will be sent through the Parent Contact Folder. Please check your child’s folder daily
for important information, class work, arts and craft projects and messages. You can contact your child’s teacher by
email. Please do not place, or ask the teacher to place, correspondence in other children’s book bags without first
gaining permission from the school administration.
Communication will often be sent by email from the administration and the classroom teacher. Be sure that you
have supplied you most current email address to your teacher and the school so you do not miss information.
Teachers will provide their email addresses; you may reach the office manager at [email protected] and the
director at [email protected]. Information may also be sent by telephone message through our calling post
system. Please do not disregard a message should it appear on your phone.
**One of our updates is a digital parent communication system that works in conjunction with our accounting and
attendance programs. We will be experimenting with this system over the first few months of school and will keep
you informed as it progresses. Folders will still be a part of the communication chain.
A classroom roster will be supplied to each family within the class. Rosters are for school related use ONLY. You are
not required to have your information appear on the class roster, however, a roster will not be provided to families
who are not included on it.

II. TIPS FOR PARENTS
Parents can help by:
Making every effort to get child to school before 9:40 and picking them up in a timely manner – 1 year olds and younger before 1:30, older preschoolers before 1:40.
Giving your child your full attention when they are arriving at or departing from school.
Using carpool to help morning transition, entering the classroom with your child usually makes it more difficult for them and for you.
Remembering to bring school bags and lunches.
Making sure all belongings are marked with name so that both the child and teacher can identify them.
Checking school bags for notes every day and returning those that need to be signed. (Ex. Field trip permission slip).
Seeing that your child is dressed in comfortable clothing appropriate for the weather and by providing adequate outerwear.
Sending enough supplies for diapering and informing teachers when potty training is in progress.
Teaching him/her how to care for himself properly when using the toilet. Please flush.
Requiring your child to hang up his/her clothes and putting away his/her toys and other possessions at home.
Giving your child simple responsibilities (age appropriate), such as helping with small tasks around the house.
Helping your child to follow directions and checking to see that he/she does what you ask.
Teaching him/her to listen when others speak.
Teaching him/her to speak clearly and distinctly.
Providing as many varied experiences as you can by planning trips and visits to increase his/her enthusiasm for learning.
Participating in school activities and special events.
Establishing a regular routine of going to bed, getting up, resting, and playing.
Praising your child each day for something he/she has done. Have a special place to put artwork, projects and papers brought home.
On child’s “leader day” encourage the selection of an item for “show-n-tell” that will enrich the classroom experience.

III. DISCIPLINE PROCEDURE
Discipline System:
Discipline procedure is established by each classroom teacher and approved by the school Director. Teachers will
discipline children as necessary according to their classroom procedure. Parents may be asked to help modify certain
classroom behaviors at home. Please do not discipline children at home for a behavior that was handled at school.
HCS does not include corporal punishment (spanking etc.) in discipline plans.
Parents are asked to sign a discipline form stating that they understand the adopted classroom discipline procedure.
The following form is an example of a notice that will be sent home to the parents as part of our discipline procedure
if it has been necessary for the teacher to speak to a parent about a child’s behavior.
Example of Teacher’s Confirmation Note:
DATE_______________________
To the parents of ________________________________________________,
This note is to confirm our conversation concerning:
________talking out
________using a loud voice
________ being unkind to another person
________running in the classroom or in line
________other ____________________________________________

If a student has exhausted the classroom discipline procedure, it may become necessary for the child to “visit” with
the Director of the school. Occasionally a child may just need a short time away from the classroom. The following
form will be sent home informing the parents of each talk with the Director if deemed necessary. If the student has
three such occasions within a three-month period, or the behavior dictates, the parent will be called to take the child
home.
Biting
Biting is a typical behavior for some young preschoolers. When a child bites he will be told that the action is wrong
and instructed in the right way to handle frustration. A report will be sent home to the parents of both children
informing them of the incident. Should a child bite three times during a three month period, parents will be called to
take the child home from school. This method has proven to stop the behavior from continuing.

This is the__________ time that I, as Director of Horizon Christian School have had a talk with your child during a

period or the behavior dictates, a parent will be called to come take the child home. A conference will be set by the
director to discuss the child’s behavior.
Please sign this form, write any comments you may have about this matter, and return the same form to the school

V. CONCERNED PARENT PROCEDURE
Parent Concerns
If a concern should arise that is related to something not covered by the policies stated in this handbook, this
is the process to follow:
If the concern is a school wide issue go to step 2. If the concern pertains to the classroom, contact the
teacher in charge and arrange a conference time. Using the form provided in this book, fill out the necessary
information. After this step has been taken if further attention is warranted by the teacher or parent, go to
step 2:
Contact the director’s office to arrange a meeting time. If this is the second meeting the form from the first
conference will be reviewed at that time and the second portion of the same form will be completed. If this
is the first discussion the second portion of the form will be completed. After this step has been taken and if
further attention is warranted by the Director or parent, go to step 3:
A written request (see included form.) needs to be presented to the School Board explaining in detail the
concern. (No request will be reviewed by the Board that has not gone through at least one of the previous
steps.) A hearing time will be set by the members of the School Board to evaluate the matter.
