These two vessels make North Little Rock the only place other than Honolulu, Hawaii, to have two Navy vessels that bookend World War II. Because the submarine is completely authentic, it can only be accessed by climbing down a 12-foot hatch. Guests are welcome to tour the accessible museum topside, which houses exhibits on various Naval vessels and a collection from the Arkansas River Historical Society.

I have a confession to make: North Little Rock, Arkansas never crossed my mind as a family travel destination. That was, until now. With so many snapshots from our trip, I can not squeeze them all into one post. However, a simple search for #ExploreNLR will provide you more insight on what a trip to North Little Rock, Arkansas can look like for your family.

Rock Region Metro StreetcarA ride on a yellow streetcar gave our family a wonderful overview tour of Downtown North Little Rock and Little Rock. Tip: The best place to get on in North Little Rock is in front of the Argenta Branch of the Laman Library on Main Street (420 Main Street). On this tour, we got to see the beauty of Downtown from the bridge and learn the history of how North Little Rock came to be. Our tour guide was friendly and very knowledgable.

Museum of DiscoveryThis by far was my daughter and I’s favorite place to visit during our trip. While the guys explored Pinnacle Mountain, Reese and I had a morning filled with over 90 hands-on interactive science and technology activities. Nothing bores kids more than having to read information on wall exhibit-after-exhibit without any type of play. No matter your kids age, there is no shortage of fun. We also bumped into Kevin Delaney who has been featured on Jimmy Fallon Late Night Show.

Pinnacle Mountain State ParkThe Pinnacle Mountain State Park is 2,356 acres of natural beauty. Per my husband and stepson, the views at the top of the 1,000-foot mountain were incredible in all directions. Word of advice, bring a lot of water and energy. The hard work will pay off with spectacular views.

Wild River Country WaterparkThis 26-acre theme park is what you can expect from a typical water park. We went there at the end of our busy day to relax in the wave pool. Nestled among the tall trees and scenic hills, this is a must-visit destination. While Wild River Country was fun, on the day we visited the lazy river was a disappointment. Seems like the water flow was being extra lazy. Maybe it was having an off day, but after a day of hiking my husband could have used some time floating instead of walking the lazy river.

Wings Over the Rock: North Little Rock Annual Air Show & Car ShowThis annual event has top airshow pilots, warbirds, formation flights, skydivers, helicopters, classic cars, hot rods, custom cars and most importantly a kiddie-barrel train that Reese could not get enough of.

The Arkansas Inland Maritime Museum provides guided tours of the historic submarine USS Razorback and tugboat USS Hoga. Since the USS Razorback is a real submarine, children under 5 years old are not permitted on the tours for safety reasons. Reese and I fed the nearby turtles that have never missed a meal from the looks of it. There are other exhibits that families with young children can view. The Old MillPresumably last standing structure from the film, Gone with the Wind, The Old Mill is an historic recreation of an 1880’s water-powered grist mill. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is surrounded by beautiful landscaping and sculptures by artist Senor Dionicio Rodriguez.

North Little Rock Trip Eats & Treats

Taziki’sTaziki’s was a family favorite given that it impressed even our pickiest eaters. They shall not be named, but know that this Mediterranean restaurant offers a variety of delicious menu items.

The Original Scoop DogA hidden gem amongst a beautiful landscape, this family-owned business serves tasty treats and one-of-kind hot dogs. Most of all, the customer service is superb!

Where We Stayed

Candlewood SuitesCandlewood Suites is an extended stay hotel with a fully equipped kitchen in each room. As a result, we were able to eat in for some of our meal options which saved us money in the long run. This location offers an indoor pool, hot tub, and a 1,000 sq ft gazebo grilling area with grills and a T.V. However, they do not offer a large-scale complimentary breakfast. In a world full of numerous distractions and stressors, North Little Rock gave our family of four a chance to reconnect, recharge, and explore. Most of all, it gave us new memories. I hope that it came do the same for you and your family. Thank you North Little Rock for a wonderful time.

QUICK ARKANSAS RIVER TRAIL TIPS

• Bring water and wear weather-appropriate clothes. Wear a helmet if you are cycling or roller blading.• Have an Arkansas River Trail map handy or a smartphone to access www.ArkansasRiverTrail.org.• Keep pets on a short leash and under control. • Most parks, including Two Rivers Park, close at dark, but cyclists can ride through. Burns Park closes at midnight and Riverview Park closes at 10 pm.• Pay attention to all trail markings, signs and other alerts or warnings.• Do not smoke while on the trails.• Motorized vehicles are not allowed except for motorized wheelchairs and emergency vehicles.• Paved pathways are for cyclists, skaters, runners and walkers.

LEAVE NO TRACEThrough its series of pathways, various habitats and opportunities for exploration, the Arkansas River Trail allows visitors to experience the incredible diversity of Arkansas’s natural environment. However, to ensure the trail remains a pristine destination for future generations, it’s important that all visitors show respect for their surroundings.• Put litter – even small crumbs, peels and cores – in garbage cans or carry it out of the parks. • Bring plastic bags to pick up after your pets.• Keep waterways clean. Do not put soap, food or pet waste in lakes or streams. • Leave plants, rocks and historical items as you find them.

BIRD WATCHING & WILDLIFEMore than 200 species of land and water birds can be seen on the trail and in the parks along the river, including long-tailed flycatchers, great blue herons, quail, ducks, egrets, cardinals, geese and the occasional bald eagle. You may see groundhogs, raccoons, possums, turtles, skunks and deer. Never approach, feed, pick up or follow wildlife. Human food is unhealthy for all wildlife and feeding them starts bad habits. Do not remove wildlife from their habitat.

SHARE THE TRAILWe all enjoy the Arkansas River Trail in different ways, so be respectful of others.• Cyclists: Slow in congested areas and stay alert. Many trail users are inexperienced and don’t know trail etiquette. Give them a chance to learn. Politely announce your presence when passing others. • Pedestrians: Only walk two abreast and stay to the right of the trail. Be aware of cyclists passing on your left. Take breaks off the trail to allow others to pass comfortably. Keep children in sight and close by.• Horse riders may be encountered on parts of the Arkansas River Trail. To avoid endangering the rider and yourself, step off the trail and quietly talk to the rider. Bikers should stop and allow the rider to pass.

HistoryThe legend of “Dogtown”The North Little Rock Chamber of Commerce tried to kill it in 1965 with a mock funeral and burial. Others tried to deny it or ignore it. Many laughed about it. The nickname “Dogtown,” it seems, has always been a part of North Little Rock. From working-class origins and determined developers, North Little Rock grew into the vibrant city it is today. Our history includes the Trail of Tears, desegregation of schools, an appearance in a famous Hollywood film and a submarine arriving on the Arkansas River all the way from the country of Turkey.

Its origin, interestingly, has vanished. Here are the four common theories.1. The football chant. The earliest known use of it in print came in an Arkansas Gazette column on September 11, 1960. The writer credited Little Rock High School students with inventing the insult, “Beat Dogtown,” as a new cheer in 1941 when the basketball series between the two cities’ white high schools had reached peak intensity. Mary Munns Williams, the late city clerk and a 1942 graduate of North Little Rock High School, recalled in a 1995 interview that Little Rock High students taunted their northside counterparts in the early 1940s by chanting “dogtown” and calling them “dogs.”

2. The round-up of strays. Munns Williams, like others of her generation, knew the story dating back to the early 1900s. According to this version, saloon patrons in Little Rock rounded up strays, crossed the Main Street Bridge and dumped them on the north side. Their motive, the story goes, was revenge after North Little Rock separated from Little Rock in 1904. “The citizens of North Little Rock fed [the dogs that were dumped] and adopted them, and the name ‘dogtown’ was bestowed on North Little Rock,” the late Argenta Drug Company owner John Cook wrote in the 1985 winter edition of the Pulaski County Historical Quarterly.

3. The...other round-up of strays. The late Walter Metz of Baring Cross, who wrote of local history and folklore in The Times of North Little Rock in the 1970s and 1980s, said that prior to construction of the Main Street Bridge in 1897, Little Rock residents dumped dogs on a heavily wooded slope called Dogtown Hill. How the dog-dumpers got across the river with their strays before construction of the bridge is problematic. The Junction Bridge, which opened in November 1884, did have some foot traffic, though it was primarily a railroad bridge. During dry spells, the river could be crossed by wading; yet towing a stray would have challenged the most determined dog-dumper. Although(continued on page 28)

As the literal crossroads of railroads, major waterways and roadways, North Little Rock has

an unusually rich history. Cultures clash, class tensions grow between the cities of North Little Rock and Little Rock and the area known as “Argenta” transitions from saloons to the arts district it is today.

Metz’s dogtown tale likely contains more folklore than history, he absorbed many stories while growing up in the early 1900s and may have heard one of the earliest explanations for the origin of the derogatory name for the north side.

4. The outlaw. North Little Rock, then known as Argenta, grew economically with the emergence of three major railroad companies and related industries. But lacking a municipal government in the 1870s and 1880s, Argenta developed a wild reputation as a town of drinkers, gamblers and vagrants. Such “lawlessness” caught the moral wrath of editorial writers in Little Rock. “Each train brings a number of tramps and disreputable characters to the place, who should not be tolerated in any community, but unless some means are taken to police the town they can carry things with a high head and go unpunished,” the Gazette editorialist griped on November 25, 1880. German, Polish, Irish and Italian immigrants and African Americans, many of them former slaves, started businesses or found jobs with the railroads, stockyards, cottonseed oil mills, cotton compresses, lumber yards, grain elevators, ice plants and service providers. From this working-class origin, Argenta likely gained the unwanted nickname of Dogtown, perhaps as early as the 1870s. At the very least, it would have given Little Rock someone or something to look down on. Argenta’s business leaders worried about their town’s reputation, too, and worked to improve it but resented whatever Little Rock had to say about it. The Gazette noted in a news brief on September 1, 1885, that Argenta residents had come up with a name of their own for Little Rock – “South Argenta.”

These stories were researched and written by Cary Bradburn, Historian for the North Little Rock History Commission.

The park is decorated with sculptures of toadstools, tree stumps, and a tree branch-entwined bridge that connects the mill to the rest of the park. Senor Dionico Rodriguez, a sculptor and artist of Mexico City, was responsible for all the details of each piece of concrete work made to represent wood, iron or stone, as well as the designing of the foot bridges and rustic seats. eat & drink

As can be expected of a city smack dab in the middle of a state that’s smack dab in the middle of the U.S., North Little Rock is a melting pot of flavors. In

the Midtown/Levy area, you’ll find authentic Mexican and Honduran dishes - and though cheese dip may not be an authentic Mexican dip, you are in the South and cheese goes with everything: legend has it that cheese dip originated right here in North Little Rock with local favorite Mexico Chiquito in 1935. Though the original is long gone, you can still taste the original recipe at the Mexico Chiquito on Camp Robinson Road. Other firsts in North Little Rock include David’s Burgers in the McCain area, known as the only hamburger restaurant with beef hand cut from US Choice Chuck and ground for that day’s use, the Original Scoopdog in Parkhill/JFK, a family-run frozen custard and hot dog stand serving with a smile year-round, and Ristorante Capeo in the Argenta Arts District where brothers Brian and Eric Isaac serve authentic Italian dishes.

ARKANSAS

Girls weekend in North Little Rock was a blast! What a beautiful city. Lisa and I woke up before the others and rented bikes for a morning ride on the Arkansas River Trail. They were still sleeping when we came back! They missed some gorgeous views.

The “brave” ones went in a REAL

World War II submarine at the

Arkansas Inland Maritime

Museum. It’s a 12-foot ladder

down but once we got in, it was

incredible. To see how 100 men

lived in that small space with no

air conditioning, for months at a

time.... Glad it’s air-conditioned

now. I got to sound the dive alarm!

At lunch our waiter suggested the

Old Mill, which was in Gone with

the Wind. When we got there

Lisa had to embarrass us with her

favorite lines in a terrible

Southern accent; the kids looked

at her like she was crazy. At

least the parents laughed.Spent the afternoon shopping at McCain Mall and exploring the Argenta Arts District. Mary thought she wouldn’t be able to ride the streetcar, but thankfully it was accessible and we had a great time.
