Comprehensive Needs Assessment

Needs Assessment Overview

Personnel and Schedule

- In order to provide uninterrupted class time, collaboration will now be after school on Wednesdays.

- Character counts’ lessons have been moved to once a month (per class). Our counselors will provide these lessons.

- Our grade levels will be staffed with the following:

PK – 2 teachers & 2 assistantsKinder – 4 teachers (self-contained)1st – 4 teachers (self-contained)2nd – 1 Math teacher, 2 Reading/Writing teachers and 1 Science/Social Studies3rd – 1 Math teacher, 1 Reading teacher, 1 Writing teacher, and 1 Science/Social Studies teacher4th – 1 Reading teacher, 1 Writing teacher, 2 Math/Science/Social Studies teachers5th – 1 Reading teacher, 1 Math teacher, 1 Science teacher and all 3 will teach Social Studies to their homeroom

Writing

Every Writing class will provide concepts from Empowering Writers. We will have a class in 3rd and 4th grade devoted just to Writing especially editingand revising. All of our writing teachers (PK-5th) will be trained in Empowering Writers by the end of October. Here is a little information about thesetrainings: This training helps teachers identify, then model, genre-specific writing skills and have students apply through guided practice, students begin torecognize the building blocks of effective writing. They even begin to read differently, with more awareness of the ways in which authors apply these skillsto their writing. Additionally, teachers finally have a common productive language to apply to the editing process. The age old cue of “write more” … nowbecomes powerful specific feedback!

Intervention

As we begin this school year we are going to take an approach for the first 8-10 weeks of school to fill our gaps. Our plan is to analyze our 3rd and 4th

grade testing results. We will provide intense individualized intervention for our “bubble students” in Reading and Math. This concept will help us fill gapsbefore a large amount of new instructions has occurred.

Data

During our August professional development we will have a variety of activities to involve every Elementary teacher with analyzing data. These activitieswill be coordinated so that teachers walk away with a sense of ownership/deeper understanding. We are fortunate to have a wide range of information inorder to see our strengths and weaknesses. By the end of this process we will focus in on 2 of our weakest areas. We will then find the trend for all gradelevels. Our goal is to have a specific focus for Kinder – 5th grade by the second week in September.

Math

We are revamping our Math Intervention and classroom questioning to better prepare our students for future testing. AVMR testing will no longer be apartof our testing calendar. We will keep our numeracy boards. These boards help our students with mental Math strategies.
