“Our guiding principle was that design is neither an
intellectual nor a material affair, but simply an integral
part of the stuff of life, necessary for everyone in a
civilized society.”
- walter gropius
these principles can be seen in what is thought of as contemporary or modern design today. this could be our homes, interior design, or typography.
the sleek design and innovative use of materials in marcel breuer’s "wassily chair" are typical of the groundbreaking developments in design that made the bauhaus famous
the bauhaus encompassed the totality of all artistic media, including fine
art, industrial design, graphic design, typography, interior design, and
architecture.

BAUHAUS
STAATICHES
THE BEGINNING
Das Staatliches Bauhaus, commonly known as
Bauhaus was established by Walter Gropius in
Weimar, Germany in 1919. Created to be a school
of architecture, in fact it did not have an architectural
department. Instead it explored the style through the
use of artistic design and sculptures.
FUNCTIONALITY
RATIONALITY DESIGN
DESSAU
The school was moved from Weimar to Dessau in 1925. It
was the home to most of the movement. The building was
designed by Gropius and had an asymmerical design giving
it no central view point. Thus to get an overall view on of
the building one must go around the whole building.
The buliding had its three wings dividing by function
the workshop, school, and the adminstration.
CONCEPT & STYLE
The school favored simple forms, rationality,
functionality and the idea of mass production
which eventually was great for manufacturing
produces. Thus it used geometric shapes and angles
along with using primary colors, red, blue, and yellow.
The schools curriculum focused on the idea behind
the creation of fine art and craft. Thus creating the basic
principles and elements of design.
“Architecture
begins where
engineering ends.”
