SDSO_2018-19_Brochure_v3.indd 4 2/24/18 8:53 AM

Every season strikes a unique balance between the masterpieces of the standard repertoire from such composers as Beethoven, Mozart, Tchaikovsky, and Prokofiev with exciting new pieces that expand our horizons. This is music from the past and present, but it is music for the future. This is music that will still fascinate new listeners when all the rest is long forgotten. On our stage, instrumentalists and vocalists will bring the notes to life, including featured soloists and composers from our own SDSO musicians. Your mind will be stimulated, and your soul fed.

Please come with us as we reach a new mountaintop and journey on into the land ahead.

DELTA DAVID GIERMusic Director

Dear Friends,

When you do what you love, they say, you never work a day in your life. This has certainly proven true for me. The 2018-2019 season will be my fifteenth with the South Dakota Symphony Orchestra. Over the years we have played so much beautiful music together, garnered numerous awards, and shared deeply meaningful programs throughout our community, state and region.

And this season, frankly, will be monumental. At the heart of the season will be our

performance of Mahler’s Symphony No. 8, the “Symphony of a Thousand,” bringing to an epic conclusion the SDSO’s cycle of Mahler symphonies. During the past fifteen years, our journey through Mahler’s works has transformed us. We are a different orchestra, playing at a higher technical level, and much more expressively. We are proud to have reached the point of completing the cycle.

Music Unwound: "AMERICAN ROOTS"NOVEMBER 17 7:30 PM NOVEMBER 18 2:30 PM

Author and musicologist Joseph Horowitz returns with a new Music Unwound program, exploring elements that are distinctly American. Charles Ives' Second Symphony actually contains no original tunes! Every melody is from Americana, but ingeniously woven into a symphonic texture. William Sharp, the baritone who is considered the foremost expositor of American song, joins us for this program along with Sioux Falls native Paul Sánchez, playing Gershwin's masterpiece.

Handel MESSIAHFirst Lutheran Church

FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 30 7:00 PMSATURDAY, DECEMBER 1 7:00 PM

Beethoven SYMPHONY No. 3 "EROICA"OCTOBER 13 7:30 PM

Beethoven’s “Heroic” Symphony is an epic beginning to an epic season. This gripping performance features Principal Flutist William Cedeño Torres and the premiere of Principal Oboist Jeffrey Paul’s tone poem Mni Wiconi (Water is Life), the musical journey of a drop of water from a mountain spring in the Black Hills.

Composed in a miraculous blaze during the summer of 1788, these last three symphonies of the master represent a stunning distillation of his fantastic musical genius.

Prokofiev SYMPHONY No. 5MARCH 2 7:30 PM

During the summer of 1944, while World War II was raging, Prokofiev’s response was to compose, “a hymn to free and happy Man, to his mighty powers, his pure and noble.” Lalo’s Concerto features Ecuadorian cellist Francisco Vila-Haas of the Sphinx program. Sphinx is dedicated to transforming lives through the power of diversity in the arts.

Tchaikovsky VIOLIN CONCERTOMARCH 23 7:30 PM

Philadelphia Orchestra Concertmaster David Kim returns to the SDSO with perhaps the greatest violin showpiece ever composed. The Omaha World Herald raved, "[Kim] played with precise technical command and a passion that was at times anguished, others tender and altogether beautiful to behold." The sublime Symphony No. 7 of Sibelius rounds out the program.

In 2019, the SDSO will complete our thirteen-season cycle of Mahler's symphonies by bringing this monumental work to life. Premiering in 1910, Gustav Mahler's Eighth Symphony was a staggering triumph. Indeed, there were over 1,000 musicians participating in the premiere of this monumental work. To this day, this work is the largest in the standard repertoire in terms of forces required: an orchestra considered large even by Mahler's standards, eight vocal soloists, and as many choristers that can be fit onto the stage of the Mary W. Sommervold Hall.
