A TIME TO BEADIf you live where flurries fly, winter is a love-it-or-leave-it season. A snowfall drives some folks out-of-doors to speed down slopes, skate across a pond, or snowshoe along a quiet hillside. Others board planes to visit distant locales that promise sun, sand, and a change of venue. For me, I embrace the quiet of winter and enjoy hunkering down indoors to organize my bead stash. Winter is a great time to complete projects that I set aside in summer, to plan new designs to use up mismatched beads, and to start new and exciting jewelry endeavors. We have three great projects that might entice you to stay inside this month, including Puca’s “Petal perfect bracelet” (p. 3), “Kashmiri pendant” by Margherita Fusco (p. 6), and “Shimmering star earrings” by Debora Hodoyer (p. 10). I hope you find time for beading as the flakes begin to fall in your neighborhood, or as the sun sets over your favorite lagoon.

Create a floral-inspired bracelet using Amos par Puca beads to celebrate the New Year.

How to pick up the Amos beads: Sew through the tip hole (TH) or the base hole (BH) per the instructions.

BASE1) On a comfortable length of thread, pick up a repeat-ing pattern of three color A Amos beads (TH) and a 3 mm pearl twice. Leaving a 6-in. (15 cm) tail, tie the beads into a ring with a square knot, and continue through the first three As and pearl to form a flower unit (figure 1, a–b).2) Pick up an 110 seed bead, a color B Amos bead (TH), and an 110, and sew through the pearl your thread exited at the start of this step. Retrace the thread path (not shown in the figure for clarity), and continue through the 110 and B (TH) (b–c).

3) Pick up a bugle bead, and sew through the open hole of the B (BH) (figure 2, a–b). Pick up a bugle, sew through the other hole of the same B, and continue through the first bugle added (b–c).4) Pick up three 150 seed beads, a pearl, three 150s, a B (BH), three 150s, a pearl, and three 150s, and sew through the adjacent B (BH). Retrace the thread path (not shown in the figure for clarity), and continue through the next three 150s, pearl, and three 150s (figure 3).5) Pick up a bugle, an 110, a pearl, an 110, and a bugle, and sew through the adjacent B (BH) and bugle (figure 4). Continue through the B (TH), bugle, B (BH), bugle, 110, and pearl (figure 5).

Pick up a 150, and sew through the pearl your thread exited at the start of this step, going in the same direction (c–d). Sew through the beadwork as shown to exit the nearest pearl on the next flower unit (d–e). Repeat these stitches for the remainder of the base. After adding the last rose montée, just sew through the adjacent end 150 (figure 10, point a).2) Pick up three 150s, and sew through the next 150 and pearl to form a loop (a–b). Retrace the thread path, and end the threads.3) Open a 5 mm jump ring, and attach it to an end loop of 150s on the base. Open another jump ring, and attach it to the first jump ring and the toggle bar. Repeat to attach the toggle ring to the other end of the clasp, but only use one jump ring. B&B
