WConveniently located in Michigan City, WConveniently located in Michigan City, WBlue Chip Casino, Hotel, and Spa is a world WBlue Chip Casino, Hotel, and Spa is a world Waway from the daily grind. “Blue Chip is truly an entertainment destination,” says Jack Elia, assistant general manager for Blue Chip Casino, Hotel, and Spa. “You can do it all here and get away from it all.”

No one is disputing that Las Vegas has its place (after all, it’s where Blue Chip owner Boyd Gaming is headquartered), but not everyone can – or wants to – get on a plane to make that Vegas trip. Thanks to Blue Chip, you can have the Vegas experience without the travel hassles and expense. The 65,000-square-foot, single-level casino, open year-round, around-the-clock, with 50 table games and nearly 2,000 slot machines, allows you to indulge your winning dreams of fancy things. But, the Blue Chip difference is what Elia calls the “Cheers” factor: “All casinos have slots. Our service is what sets us apart. We have over 250 employees who each have over 10 years of experience. We get to know people by their first names, so that they can come in and have the same experience as Norm from ‘Cheers’ – ‘Sometimes you want to go where everybody knows your name’.” >>

Valparaiso is home to myriad cultural, entertainment, and epicurean delights, but some adventures call for a road trip. Whether it’s an immersive movie viewing experience, year-round fun and pampering for executives and families alike, or a date with lady luck on Lake Michigan, the Region is home to destination havens worth the drive for Valparaiso residents.

— Jack Elia, Blue Chip Casino, Hotel, and Spa

“Blue Chip is truly an entertainment destination. You can do it all hereand get away from it all.”

Elia says this rare blend of genuine friendliness and hospitality stems from Boyd Gaming owner Bill Boyd. “He’s not like a corporate executive,” Elia explains. “He says hello to everyone. We feel like we’re part of a family.”

Family-oriented entertainment can be found in a cinematic experience, too, at Goodrich Portage 16 IMAX. The cinematic adventure began with the vision of Portage 16 IMAX owner, Bob Goodrich, explains Kevin Morgan, manager of Portage 16 IMAX: “He very much believes in a community-based theater, and our theater became a destination when we added IMAX.”

In addition to its one-of-a-kind-in-the-region IMAX and D-box movie viewing experiences, Portage 16 IMAX has programs and perks throughout the year for the whole family. When the kids get bored during summer break, or mom’s just at her wit’s end, bring them to a summer movie. Kid-friendly favorites are just one dollar per person, Monday through Friday, at 10am. For Frequent Movie Goers, Morgan explains, “Every penny you spend will give you something back,” thanks to a point-based system in which earned points can be redeemed for free tickets and concession items. And, remove the risk of a boring party – from birthday celebrations to baby showers – by renting one of Portage 16 IMAX’s popular party rooms.

Country clubs know a thing or two about family friendliness, too, and, “You won’t find a more family-friendly club than Sand Creek Country Club,” says Noreen Perl, director of sales. Sand Creek Country Club is not a stuffy, good-old-boys club. When Perl first saw and experienced Sand Creek, she says, “I was impressed with this hidden gem. I fell in love.” The club’s winning combination of championship golf, state-of-the-art health club, resort-like pool with café, and variety of activities for everyone from executives to children, combine for a refined, yet familial, feel that leads to lifelong memories for its loyal staff and

family. New social activities are continually added, Perl says, including ladies’ clubs, a men’s lounge, and beer and wine tastings. But what makes Sand Creek exceptional is the lasting multigenerational ties. There’s a special focus on families, with kids’ events offered that include pumpkin carving; a family fall fest; DJ-hosted dances, a Thanksgiving brunch; carriage rides; Breakfast with Santa; and a kids’ New Year’s Eve celebration. Perl says, “It’s wonderful to see children who grew up at the club, and then return to get married at the club.”

Lasting ties run deep in the membership roster and amongst the staff at Sand Creek Country Club. Perl points out that many staff members have been with the club for 15, 20, 25 years or more. “That loyalty says so much about the place.” Perl loves being part of the Sand Creek family. “I’ve grown to share the love and passion that staff and members have for Sand Creek Country Club. It’s not just a job, it’s a privilege and opportunity to be part of this wonderful community.”

“[IMAX] immerses you in the experience. It’s perfect for racing and flying movies, such as ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ and the ‘Fast and the Furious’ series.”—Kevin Morgan, General Manager, Portage 16 IMAX

Valpochamber.org 7

A cinematic destination for the entire community, Portage 16 provides accommodations and adaptive tools for individuals with special needs. Descriptive and enhanced audio, which delivers descriptive narration of the film via listening devices using a Fidelio sound system, are available for the blind and visually impaired; and, closed captioning, via a Captiview system, is available for those who are deaf or hearing impaired. Once a month, Portage 16 IMAX offers first-run movies without the typical visual and audio intensity for those with sensory processing issues. The “Lights Up, Sound Down” program does exactly that to provide a secure, non-threatening movie viewing experience.

When wintertime blues elicit pangs of wanderlust, skip the hassle and expense of flying and embark on a one-tank road trip entertainment adventure. Sit back and be entertained at Blue Chip by local acts

and A-list names in music and comedy at Stardust Event Center; It’s Vegas, Baby; and Rock’s Lounge. And, Blue Chip excels at mixing business with pleasure at one of its many events, from the holiday Mix, Mingle, and Jingle, perfect for small business holiday parties; to the Bridal Fair in February, widely considered to be Northwest Indiana’s premier bridal fair; to the Veteran’s Event in June, with event proceeds benefiting veterans affected by Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD).

If the allure of the fairway is what stirs your heart, head directly to Sand Creek Country Club, conveniently located in Chesterton. Its award-winning golf includes the Marsh, Creek, and Lake Courses, considered some of Indiana’s best golf courses. What truly sets the Club’s golf apart, though, is that members can golf year-round, which is no small feat in meteorologically temperamental Northwest Indiana. Perl says, “We keep the courses open as long as possible, and a grounds crew maintains the courses 24 hours a day, seven days a week.” This means that if Indiana favors us with unseasonably warm weather close to Thanksgiving, it’s still the perfect time to golf. When the weather turns chilly, Sand Creek converts its cart storage area into an indoor practice area, serviced by their PGA professionals. “The indoor practice area includes two hitting bays with access to FlightScope fitting and instructional technology, and includes a 500 square foot practice putting green with four holes. A casual seating area is also available and is designed to encourage small groups to practice together. It’s spectacular.”

Go beyond the mundane movie and immerse yourself in an IMAX or D-box seating cinematic experience. With IMAX technology – the curved screen, high-resolution cameras, and top-notch projection lights and sound system – the typical limitations and barriers of standard definition are removed. Portage 16 was the first Goodrich company with an IMAX planned in the initial build. And, for only an extra eight dollars per ticket, you can >>

feel as if you’re part of the action in one of the theater’s 28 D-box seats, which sync with the movie to provide physical movement that coordinates with the action being viewed. “It immerses you in the experience,” Morgan says. “It’s perfect for racing and flying movies, such as ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ and the ‘Fast and the Furious’ series.”

For Morgan, one of the biggest perks of being part of Portage 16 IMAX is the opportunity to feel like a kid again thanks to Flashback Cinema showings on Wednesdays and Sundays. Crowd favorites include “Casablanca,” “Polar Express,” “Princess Bride,” and the perennial summer favorite, “Jaws.” He says, “My favorites were ‘Back to the Future’ and ‘Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade.’ I last saw the Indiana Jones film when I was eight or nine years old. It was cool to see it on the big screen again.”

Relaxation and replenishment await at your destination havens. If gambling’s not your thing, you can still get away without ever setting foot in the casino. A luxurious stay awaits you in one of Blue Chip’s 486 premier rooms, and you can pamper away the wear-and-tear of daily reality at Spa Blu, a 10,000-square-foot spa, salon, and fitness center, where being excessively spoiled is a Blue Chip specialty. And, since rejuvenation tends to whet the appetite, follow up your pampering at one of Blue Chip’s five onsite restaurants, ranging from William B’s Steakhouse – when you’re in the mood for fancy fare – to It’s Vegas, Baby! for festively casual cuisine. After your appetite is satiated, feel free to peruse the gift shops and, perhaps, pick up a treasure for that special someone or yourself.

Sand Creek’s two-story clubhouse is active 365 days a year, but if all that activity gets to be too much, relax with spa services exclusively offered to members. The spa services include onsite massage therapy. “Offering this onsite holds a special appeal to our high profile members who like to have easy access to

our services yet want to escape the public and have anonymity,” she says. “Our members get luxury – the best of the best – and get in and out without the hassle.”

Even at Portage 16 IMAX, there are plans in place to offer more than popcorn and soda. In the early part of 2017, Morgan explains, “Beer and wine will be sold separately from our other concessions items. Patrons would be required to show their I.D.’s just like they would at a ballpark, and there would be a drink limit.”

Whether you’re golfing in Chesterton, gambling in Michigan City, or watching a film in Portage, Valparaiso is never far away. Sand Creek’s members hail from all over the Region including Chicago, Merrillville, Michigan City, New Buffalo, Mich, and, accounting for some 25 percent of the club’s membership, Valparaiso. “We truly are a destination,” Perl says. Sand Creek Country Club is owned by Concert Golf Partners, and members have access to all affiliated Concert Golf properties, including properties in Arizona, Boston,

and multiple locations in Florida, for golf, swimming, and other activities. As Perl explains, the Club stays classy without getting stuck in the past. “Our club doesn’t have a stuffy, pretentious feel. We’re warm and welcoming, with members from diverse backgrounds, religions, races, and age groups brought together to enjoy social activities and community.”

Though it’s a private club, Sand Creek opens its doors to the community through banquets and events including charity functions with live auctions and dinner, corporate events, and other opportunities for those who aren’t members. Perl says the Club appreciates the opportunity to connect to Valparaiso businesses and the Valpo Chamber. “We have a long standing partnership with Indiana Beverage which intertwines with many other small business relationships in the community. We also host extensive youth programming in health and wellness, and sport-specific training all year long. We encourage all Chamber members to attend the Awards Dinner in January to kick off 2017 at Sand Creek Country Club.”

Valparaiso is ensconced in the offerings and the very make-up of Blue Chip. Elia, vice chair-member services of the Valpo Chamber Executive Committee, says, “We look towards fellow members for many of our needs.” Suzie’s Café and Catering supplies the baked goods in the deli; Valpo Velvet Ice Cream is served throughout the property; R & P Heating & Cooling & Restaurant Service does repairs; and Schultz Floral & Gift Shop’s floral arrangements add a whole lot of beauty.

For many of the patrons and staff at these destination havens, Valparaiso is home. As a Valparaiso resident since 2006, Elia and his wife, Margaret, love the places and faces of their hometown. He says his favorite thing about Valparaiso is the people. “We moved here and discovered everyone is friendly. It’s just a great, friendly place to live.

he effects of brokenness and suffering spread beyond the borders of towns and cities, but so do genuine, roll-up-your-

sleeves-and-do-something charity-based solutions. Food insecurity, children who don’t know their worth, and a wounded ecosystem aren’t “out there” problems but “all around us and right here” needs. Just as Valparaiso isn’t solitary in its needs, it doesn’t stand alone in Northwest Indiana when it comes to addressing those needs.

Of the over 800 members of the Valpo Chamber, approximately 14 percent are non-profits. Though the Shirley Heinze Land Trust, Food Bank of Northwest Indiana, and National Youth Advocate Program all have roots in different parts of the Region, those roots of provision and protection reach out to Valparaiso and their influence is felt deeply in the community.

Protecting the FutureThe Shirley Heinze Land Trust, founded in 1981, which manages nearly 2,000 acres in Lake, Porter, and LaPorte Counties, preserves, protects, and restores key habitats in Northwest Indiana. While preserving the irreplaceable beauty of these habitats is important, it’s not just about keeping things pretty. “These preserves – which are a hodgepodge of different habitats from prairies to forests – are ecologically significant,” says Kris Krouse, executive director of the Shirley Heinze Land Trust. “Preserving these higher quality natural areas provides havens for

biodiversity, for an array of insects, birds, trees, and plants to thrive.”

These havens help the human species to thrive, too. Krouse says, “The biodiversity allows for pollination which is essential for the food that we eat. Trees are essential to improving air quality, and forested wetland acts as a sponge, soaking up nutrients and filtering contaminants like stormwater runoff.”

Preserving these ecological treasures includes stewardship, education, and guided nature walks. Land managers return these habitats back to their indigenous roots by removing invasive plant species which “weed” out native plant species and adversely affect wildlife; and, manage controlled fires on savannahs and wetlands. GLISTEN (Great Lakes Innovative Stewardship Through Education Network) interns, local undergraduate students, conduct research, such as recent studies done by a pair of interns who looked at the effects of different types of herbs in combating invasive plants, Krouse says.

The battle for preserving our unique regional treasures is lost if we don’t raise up future generations to continue the

fight, so education is a major focus of the Shirley Heinze Land Trust. In partnership with the Chicago Field Museum and the Dunes Learning Center, with major funding provided by Arcelor Mittal, the Northwest Indiana Mighty Acorns Partnership offers experiential education through outdoor education to local students in six communities. This program includes the Mighty Acorns, for students in third to fifth grade; Earth Force, for students in middle school; and CIMBY (Calumet Is My Backyard) for students in high school.

Krouse urges those interested in securing the future of all species, including our own, to donate money, land, or their time through volunteer opportunities such as leading guided hikes and signing up for volunteer workdays. Volunteering is good for your body, mind, and conscience. “I have yet to meet someone who walks through our nature preserves and parks, who uses nature as a tool to relax and stay active, who isn’t better off mentally and physically.”

Feeding the invisible hungryThe Food Bank of Northwest Indiana, one of Feeding America’s 200 food banks nationwide, partners with businesses and agencies throughout Northwest Indiana to acquire and distribute food to those in need. Every year, some 4.5 million meals are distributed in Lake and Porter Counties.

The greatest need in the Region is for families defined as food insecure, explains Steve Beekman, Executive Director of the Food Bank of Northwest Indiana. Those who are food insecure are often invisible, because they’re typically employed and have housing to varying degrees but are surviving paycheck-to-paycheck. “Food insecurity is the inability to access or obtain nutritious food,” he says. “It’s families with limited incomes who have to decide between paying the rent or buying healthy food.”

Senior citizens are particularly vulnerable to food insecurity. The Commodity Supplemental Food Program targets low-income seniors who can’t drive and who don’t have access to food pantries, and provides this target group with a one months’ supply, 30-pound box of USDAcommodity foods. Some 740 seniors, identified in conjunction with partnering agencies, are helped each month. >>

Children are also highly vulnerable to food insecurity, and the BackPack program provides a sack full of kid-friendly, nutritious weekend meals to about 400 students in need across Northwest Indiana. In Portage, the BackPack program provides weekend meals to 250 food insecure children across eleven Portage Township Schools. The need for services across both Lake and Porter counties is still great, and the Food Bank is interested in expanding the program into Valparaiso.

Valparaiso is one of the Food Bank of Northwest Indiana’s largest resources in terms of both its donors and volunteers. Valparaiso retailers such as Aldi, Target, Walmart, and Strack and Van Til, as well as food pantry agencies Immanuel Lutheran Church, The Church of Jesus Christ, New Hope Church of God, and Rose Gray Hilltop Food Pantry, “play a critical role in supporting our efforts across the Region,” Beekman says.

it takes a villageThe National Youth Advocate Program (NYAP) is a private, not-for-profit program which advocates for the rights of children, youth, and families, by creating and implementing effective, community-based solutions. Foster care is provided by NYAP in several locations in Indiana and, in cooperation with the Department of Child Services and probation departments, recruits families to care for children who’ve been abused and neglected. The Constant and Never Ending Improvement (CANEI)

Program helps children under the age of 18 years in restrictive placement programs transition back into the community.

“If you have compassion, if you’re willing to give it a try, then you have what it takes to help a child who needs you,” says Sueanne Procopio, Merrillville team leader for the NYAP. Though there are certain requirements for being a foster parent that have to be met, you don’t have to be perfect to be a foster parent. “We’re in need of foster parents in Valparaiso and the surrounding community,” she says, and encourages anyone interested in learning more about foster care to attend classes offered by the NYAP, held once a month at the Valparaiso library. These classes are also a source of ongoing support for those who are already foster parents, and Procopio adds, “We encourage foster parents to bring community members and friends to the classes.”

NYAP welcomes the assistance of the Valparaiso business community in supporting local foster children and families. Procopio explains that NYAP typically does four events every year for foster families, with a special focus in May, which is National Foster Appreciation Month.

These events are made possible by the generosity of supporting businesses. She says, “We appreciate anyone who would let us do an event at their business, such as bowling or movies for the kids, to give them opportunities they’ve never had; or, a night out for foster parents and families.”

Other opportunities to help out include contributing funds, goods, and space towards NYAP’s annual August book bag collection and Christmas party. “It’s all donation-based, from the backpacks to the food to the halls,” Tarsha Turner, Northwest Indiana regional director for the National Youth Advocate Program, says. NYAP also appreciates Valparaiso businesses who are willing to leave out signs, give out brochures, and “get the word out.”

Partnerships and mentoring for kids in the CANEI Program are key needs. NYAP uses a structured curriculum to transition kids back into the community and regular school settings. Mentoring and job training, especially for entry-level positions, is crucial in securing a bright future for both the kids and the community. Turner says, “Reaching out to businesses to establish these partnerships is definitely our goal for 2017.”

The local market is inundated with competing businesses that provide a variety of goods and services. What niche do you fill?Furniture Werks specializes in furniture reupholstery, refinishing, repair, and antique restoration. Owner Lou Butcher continues his father’s legacy of restoration, and takes pride in helping other families preserve their own legacies by caring for and rescuing heirloom furniture pieces to pass on.

Furniture used to be a lifetime investment, cherished items to pass down to children and grandchildren. In times past, “work, such as reupholstery, is what people planned on,” Butcher explains. “After fifteen or twenty years, it was good enough to be reupholstered.” Unfortunately, he says, today’s marketplace is full of low cost, unrepairable pieces. “You can’t guarantee that a low-quality furniture piece will hold, because oftentimes the wood isn’t strong enough.”

Butcher knows quality, which is why his furniture repair shop is thriving when so many similar businesses have closed their doors. He advises, “If you’ve had furniture for thirty or forty years and it hasn’t broken, that’s your best clue that you’ve got something worthwhile to refinish, reupholster, or repair.”

Likewise, further south in the small town of Kouts, Birky Family Farms Country Gourmet stays authentically relevant with its unique blend of offerings under one roof, including its catering facility, country market, bakery, and donut shop. “Everything about what we do is natural,” says Tim Jones, manager of Birky Family Farms Country Gourmet. “We raise our own hogs, cattle, chicken, and turkeys on Chris Birky’s farm. Everything that we sell in the market is all-natural. We don’t use hormones or antibiotics on our animals, and we feed them non-GMO grains.”

And, he continues, you won’t find mass market frozen food products in their restaurants. “The things we make, from our hamburgers to our chicken dishes, we make ourselves. It’s all handmade.”

What is it that keeps Region residents coming back?

A business moves beyond valuable to venerated based on expertise. As Furniture Werks’ loyal customers know, Butcher has years of hands-on experience in distinguishing and recognizing quality, an expertise one can’t attain from reading a book. He recognizes when manufacturers cut corners along with particular manufacturing techniques that aren’t built to be repairable. This is why you can find so many pieces in second-hand stores and antique malls, he says.

Birky Family Farms’ phenomenal food offerings have made it a regional go-to for catering for 25 years. Companies including NIPSCO and major venues such as the Porter County Expo Center rely on Birky Family Farms to provide food for company picnics, Christmas parties, banquets, and other events. Jones recalls that the Birky family received a big boost 25 years ago when they>>

echnology evolves, and trends come and go, but quality never goes out of style. Birky Family Farms Country Gourmet’s all-natural cuisine and Furniture Werks’ expert furniture craftsmanship prove that authenticity and expertise continue to be relevant in the twenty-first century. T

were chosen by the Porter County Expo as one of its preferred caterers. “That was a big deal for us, and it helped establish us with other Valparaiso businesses.”

Many Valparaiso businesses also rely on Furniture Werks for quality craftsmanship, including Valparaiso University; Franciscan St. Anthony; and Hoeppner, Wagner and Evans. Butcher has secured his reputation for taking old furniture and putting it back the way it should be, a family tradition that his dad started in 1939.

Birky Family Farms knows a thing or two about making old-fashioned things the way they should be, and Jones raves about their homemade ice cream. They typically carry 10 to 12 flavors at one time, but have created as many as 50 different flavors including customer favorites Birthday Cake and Mustang (named in honor of the town’s high school mascot), a decadent blend of peanut butter and chocolate. Jones is a connoisseur of chocolate ice cream, and he declares, “Our chocolate ice cream is the best you’ll ever eat.”

Old-fashioned know-how and expert customer care are always in demand for Snapchat enthusiasts and rotary phone traditionalists alike. Like furniture that lasts for generations and food that doesn’t contain tongue-twisting artificial ingredients, relevant businesses that meet the needs of their customers are mainstays of Northwest Indiana.

>>Butcher’s formula for success is ensuring that

he doesn’t have to worry about running into

unhappy customers. He says, “I always want

to put out a good job. I don’t want to run into

people who aren’t happy with their results.”

A staple at the Porter County Fair for over a

decade, Birky Family Farms has put Kouts on the

radar for many in the Region. Jones recalls one

recent, particularly enthusiastic review from a

satisfied customer: “They had no idea that the

best food they’ve ever eaten would come from a

little town named Kouts!”

JOHN SEiBERT2016 Distinguished Community LeaderThe Distinguished Community Leader Award is the highest recognition the Chamber confers on an individual member of the business community. Recipients have demonstrated leadership, active involvement in the greater Valparaiso business community, reputation among business leaders, success in promoting business and industry development, overall contribution to the community and its quality of life, and professional activities.

After growing up in Texas and attending Baylor University for his undergraduate degree, John Seibert moved to Indiana to attend graduate school at Indiana University Bloomington. It was here that he met his wife, Rin, and, shortly thereafter, moved with her to Valparaiso. Thirty-six years have passed, and the Seiberts still call Valpo home. Together they’ve raised three children, Chris, Andrew, and Emily, all of whom have grown to value service in both their careers and mission work. John now has the joy of spending time with his two granddaughters, who also live in Valpo.

John’s career is filled with experience with several of the city’s most influential businesses and people. Upon moving to Valparaiso, John worked with the YMCA, followed by a position at Porter Memorial

Director of the Valparaiso Park Department, a position he held for 19 years while working closely with then-mayor, David Butterfield. Once Mayor Costas was elected, John was asked to accept the new City Administrator position, which he did for two years. Following this move, he became Vice President of Opportunity Enterprises (OE), which led to his work with Housing Opportunities (HO). John, together with many others, helped move HO from a subsidiary of OE to an independent, self-sustaining non-profit agency as its first President. When the Valpo Parks Director position became vacant, John felt called to return to the job he considered his “first love,” having gained invaluable experience during his 5-year absence. “Each of these were great organizations to be a part of from a staff, client, and board standpoint,” stated John.

John remained active with Housing Opportunities as a board member. His civic engagements do not end there, however. John has served two 6-year terms as a

explained, “Being a member of the Chamber gave me great insight and appreciation for the high-performance standards and the selfless community spirit that is our business leadership legacy that continues today.” He is a past member of the Valparaiso Kiwanis club, of which he previously served as President. John also has worked on various youth, elder citizens, ethics, diversity, and community growth issues during his work with Mayor Costas. He has remained actively involved with his church throughout the years, often taking leadership roles while working with both adults and children.

John credits the altruistic culture of Valparaiso with making it easy to get involved in improving the community. “When you get into a culture like ours, you get the best out of each other and you become a better person because of the experience and the lasting relationships.” He is truly more than happy to give back to a community who has done so much for his family and for so many

families just like his. When John’s son, Andrew, was younger, he was diagnosed with cancer, and the entire community rallied together to help his family during that trying time. “The community reached out to us in wonderful and extraordinary ways.”

Feeling honored and humbled by this award, John is on a quest to thank as many people as he can in the coming

staff, the business community, and more. Most importantly, John would like to thank his wife, whom he describes “as the person I strive to be. Her faith, selflessness, and unconditional love is a gift to me and to everyone she meets.”

In conclusion, he stated, “I am humbled to be in the company of the amazing people who have received this award in the past. I am grateful for all of the people that I’ve had the privilege to serve with and for this opportunity to thank them.”

iVaN aND PaT BODENSTEiNER2016 Legacy of ServiceThe Legacy of Service Award recognizes individuals in the community who, over time or under extraordinary circumstances, have given service to the community above and beyond what is expected in their profession. Recipients have created a legacy of community service and serve as an example for others to emulate.

Ivan and Pat Bodensteiner have called Valparaiso home for over 40 years. After meeting in Iowa, their home state, the couple settled in several places in Indiana, including South Bend, Fort Wayne, and Indianapolis. They even lived in Hawaii for a short time

Once a year, the Valpo Chamber recognizes the accomplishments of business leaders who embody a spirit of selfless dedication to the community. This year, John Seibert, Director of the Valparaiso Park Department, will receive the 2016 Distinguished Community Leader award. Ivan and Pat Bodensteiner will receive the 2016 Legacy of Service award. Ivan is an attorney, and Pat worked with the VNA, among other places, before her retirement. The recipients of both these awards were nominated by their peers. nominated by their peers.

before settling down in Valpo. Ivan and Pat have two daughters, Julie and Jill, both of whom went on to become lawyers and work at Notre Dame. They also have three wonderful grandchildren, Maddie, Sam, and Sarah, and a son-in-law, George Douglas.

Professionally, Pat’s career varied throughout the years. She worked as an X-ray technician, received her Bachelor’s Degree from Valparaiso University, and earned her Master’s in Social Work from IUPUI. She worked for the Visiting Nurse Association (VNA), where she helped start the local hospice program. After a period of private practice work, she returned to the VNA until her retirement. Ivan received his law degree from Notre Dame. He worked for Legal Services in both Fort Wayne and Hawaii. Ivan taught at Valparaiso University for 42 years, ending his tenure there last June. During that time, he did consulting work for Legal Services, fighting for civil rights, and appeared in front of the United States Supreme Court twice.

While their professional and family lives surely kept the Bodensteiners busy, that in no has way lessened their role in giving back to the community. Ivan is on the board for Indiana Legal Services, HealthLinc, and Project Neighbors. He has also previously served on the board for Hilltop Neighborhood House and on the City Human Relations Council. Pat is currently on the board for Housing Opportunities, and has previously served on the boards of the following organizations: Planned Parenthood, Pines Village, YMCA, The Caring Place, and the VNA Hospice advisory committee. She is also currently working with the Porter County Community Foundation’s Women’s Fund, Jacob’s Ladder, and Caring Designs.

Giving back to the community is something the Bodensteiners are passionate about for several reasons. “Many don’t have the same opportunities that we had, so we want to improve people’s lives in some fashion,”

explained Ivan. “A community is judged by how it treats the least of its citizens in need,” he added, as further explanation for the importance of civic engagement. Pat

described one of the most fulfilling aspects of their volunteer work has been the effect it’s had on their daughters. “Our children have followed in our footsteps and are incredibly involved in their communities. That is the greatest gift we could have.” Ivan and Pat would like to thank their daughters, their parents, and finally, each other, for endlessly supporting one another in all that they do.

Our community has thrived thanks to the tireless work and unending dedication the tireless work and unending dedication of these award winners. Thank you to John of these award winners. MTA is the go-to source for broadband internet and voice services, as well as VOIP telephone systems, security camera systems, enterprise wi-fi systems and network security firewall systems. Our business is built upon our core values of integrity, accountability, initiative, and

respect. We take our work very seriously, but also like to have a little fun at the same time.

Valparaiso is a unique community in the way that it has embraced technology and entrepreneurship. It’s no surprise to us that Google named Valparaiso the 2016 winner of Indiana’s eCity Award. We love doing business here! Our chamber membership has been instrumental in helping to create many outstanding long term relationships within the greater Valparaiso business community.

No one thinks too much about internet or telephone service until the service goes down. We get it - your business cannot be without internet or telephone service. Network outages can happen, but what’s different about MTA is that we can deliver service over a variety of mediums including fixed wireless, telco lines, ethernet, or cable modem. We can create failover so that your internet and telephone service stay up in the event of network outages. At the same time we’ll help you save money and do business a little more efficiently. Plus, our call center is located right here in NWI.

Crocker started his show in Hillsdale, Michigan, but was traveling the world and performing in front of sellout crowds by the time a telegram was sent to secure a date in Valparaiso through Heineman in 1889. The request was initially turned down due to the fact the auditorium entrance was outside the building in the alley, which was an iron stairway leading to the second floor. Crocker’s troupe wired back that the horses would make easy work of the staircase. Heineman accepted the contract and got to work reinforcing the building.
