A Friend in NeedHi again,

Just wanted to thank those of you that have been tested.

God bless you, but, I’m still searching for a direct kidney transplant donor.

I am certainly appreciative of the many friends that have been tested as

well as family members. Continue to pass the word that a direct match

is still needed, and, again, please

(1) contact the Transplant Center at Mayo Clinic directly by calling

(480) 342-1010 or

(2) filling out the health history questionnaire at www.mayoclinic.org/livingdonor.

Of course, the recipient is Joseph DiTommaso, DOB 1/31/1946.

All medical expenses are covered by my insurance and you can choose to remain anonymous.

Check out the following site for more information about being a donor: transplantation/beadonor.

God bless you all.

Stay well….stay safe. joe “d”.

Grazie.

BOCCE NEWS…Spring League has started with 12 teams participating.

The First place team in the Winter league was: Al Maciejewski, Kevin Reilly, Tom Ryan, Marie

Scialdone. Congratulations! Major repairs to courts will be started after Spring League finishes. This will include

removal of deteriorating sideboards and replacing with new boards. Big Job – Will need help!

A new drinking fountain on the courts was purchased and installed by the Bocce League.

Wednesday morning bocce at 9:30 a.m.

Next Bocce League meeting will be Tuesday, April 4 at 7 p.m.

And, now, our final chapter in A Historical Look at Bocce (continued)

Contrary to the rest of Europe, the great game of balls thrived in Great Britain. Such nobility as Queen Elizabeth I and Sir

Francis Drake were avid fans. According to legend, Sir Frances Drake refused to set out to defend England against the

Spanish Armada until he finished a game. He proclaimed, “First we finish the game, then we’ll deal with the Armada! Bocce

frequently lost and gained popularity throughout the ages. It was Giuseppe Garibaldi, who, while unifying and nationalizing

Italy, popularized the sport as it is known today. In 1896, during a resurgence of popularity, the first Bocce Olympiad was

held in Athens, Greece. Bocce has been a part of international sports ever since.

The sport first came to America in the English version called “Bowls” from the French boule meaning ball. In accord with

how the game was played in Britain, American players threw the ball not on stone dust (as is done today in Bocce) but on

close cropped grass, which some say is the origin of the modern lawn. It has been noted that one early American playing field

was Bowling Green at the southern tip of Manhattan in NY and that George Washington built a court at Mount Vernon, in the

1780s. In modern times, the first Bocce clubs were organized in Italy. Notably the first Italian League was formed in 1947 by

fifteen teams in and around the town of Rivoli (Torino). 1947 also marks the beginning of the yearly Bocce World

Championships. This Championship event continues today with participants from over thirty nations – including the United

States. Thanks to many Italian immigrants at the turn of the century, Bocce has come to flourish in the United States. During

its beginnings in the U.S., there were as many versions of the game as there were towns the immigrants had left. The

popularity of Bocce in America has been on the rise since then and there are more than 25,000,000 Bocce enthusiasts

throughout the United States today. Next to Soccer and Golf, Bocce is the third most participated sport in the world and is

considered the oldest know sport in world history.

Let’s Play Bocce! Paul Linderoth, President

Have a family member

or close friend that you

want to remember or honor?

There is a way and it’s easy. Buy a brick with their name, or whatever you want put on it. It will be placed in the Memorial Walk way behind the Bocce courts. The bricks are $50 each. For more information, call John May at 602-377-9503 or Marie Scialdone at 602-738-4817.This an AAIC Bocce League fund drive for the repair and maintenance of the Bocce Courts.
