March 2018

Hello – My name is Kate Pirie and I have been working at St John’s, teaching PE since October. I wanted to take this opportunity to introduce myself and say how much I am enjoying working with your wonderful children.

I have 16 years PE teaching experience and have done many roles within this time ranging from being Head of a large PE department to leadership roles at a large secondary school called Leeds West Academy in Bramley. I decided to move schools so I could be closer to home as I have a young family.

I am delighted to be working at St John’s and I am excited to see how I can bring

some changes to the PE curriculum to enhance your child’s education.

I wanted to put together a ‘PE in Pictures’ Newsletter for you to enjoy so you can see how much we do at St John’s and how much your child can benefit from being fit, active and healthy.

I hope you enjoy the read!

In PE we have been busy having fun and adventures with many trips away

from school. The children love being on trips – these experiences are such a

valuable part of a child's education; they promote a sense of togetherness

and team spirit which is hard to encapsulate within the school timetable.

PE Trips Since October

Next Terms Trips

We have three trips in the pipe line – Ten Pin bowling for the primary group

(The Glen), tennis for Year 9/10 (Gilbert) and athletics.

Information / letters will be coming out to parents soon.

Sports Relief Week 19th to 23rd March

In school we supported this charity event by buying wrist bands and coming together as a whole school on Friday to ‘Move for a Mile’.

Thanks to all parents who supported their child through sponsor money –

we really appreciate your generosity. We raised £241 in total. Fantastic!

Building Links with Leeds United FC and Leeds Rhinos

During this half term I have been busy working with Leeds Utd on a new initiative where we have asked some Leeds Utd coaches to come into school to train some of our lucky students.

On Wednesday 18th / 25th April and 2nd May – Yr 11 will have their training sessions.

On Wednesday 2nd / 9th and 23rd of May – Year 9/10 will have their training sessions.

These sessions will happen within their normal lesson time – all children must be in their full PE Kit please.

We have also managed to secure a LEEDS UTD FOOTBALL AFTER SCHOOL CLUB. This will start on Tuesday

17th April (7-8pm) and run for six weeks. If your child missed out on this opportunity please don’t worry as

we will have many more exciting experiences coming soon. Speak to the office if interested.

I am currently forging a link with Leeds Rhinos to enable us to visit the stadium, speak to players and poten-

tially help on a match day. As soon as I have any secure plans I will let you know...watch this space!

Curriculum Time This Term…..

Your children have been working really hard in PE this term, pushing their own boundaries and learning new

skills. I wanted to share with you some action photos of the skills and knowledge your children have been

learning about so you can discuss it with them.

Circuit Training

The older pupils have been working on their fitness

levels recently – by completing a fitness circuit. They

have to warm-up and stretch beforehand and the

groups have started to do this independently.

St John’s Gym

Pupils using our fitness suite – they looked at how to monitor their progress by using stop watches and they also recorded their activities on their log sheets.

Gymnastics

In Gymnastics we incorporated counting and waiting your turn.

Some of the children moved confidently along

apparatus that was high off the ground.

In primary we all lend a helping hand.

Curriculum

Here is the Curriculum Overview for PE so you can see what your child has done and what they will be doing during the summer term.

Please remember that after Easter (if the weather allows!) we will be outside for PE so all the children will require warm suitable clothing and footwear.

PE KIT – Does your child require anything new?

Please see the pictures on the next page – we now can add initials onto garments to avoid things being lost.

Please speak to reception if you wish to purchase any thing as we are putting an order in after Easter.
