#realmenwearpink: Raising funds for breast cancer research Don’t be surprised if you visit the Civic and Community Centre next week and see staff wearing pink tutus or tiaras! As part of Council’s ongoing wellbeing inspired programs, staff at Walkerville Council are getting behind the #RealMenWearPink campaign presented by the National Breast Cancer Foundation. The campaign runs from the 12 – 18 June 2017 and raises funds for important research. The Walkerville team #Pinkerville is embracing the challenge to get pinked and raise money. Council’s depot staff have taken up the challenge and will be wearing hot pink high shirts at work to promote the message #realmenwearpink. There will be a display in the Civic and Community Centre as Pink Ribbons for sale. Members of the public are welcome to make a donation: https://realmenwearpink.gofundraise.com.au/page/Walkerville

Did you know?

SA is the only state in Australia that has legislated to ban e-waste from landfill

E-waste can contain hazardous materials, such as heavy metals and glass. If broken or damaged, these pose an unacceptable environmental hazard. Around 90% of what is used to make televisions and computers can be recycled.

Whitegoods have been banned from direct landfill disposal in SA since 2011 and computers, televisions and fluorescent lighting from metropolitan Adelaide have been banned from being disposed of directly to landfill since 2012. (source: Environmental Protection Authority SA)

So what can we do?

Council currently does not provide an e-waste service. We are investigating, with East Waste, what services can be offered to ratepayers and residents in order to safely dispose of e-waste. Stay tuned for further updates over the coming weeks.

In the interim Council has partnered with ECycleSA to help residents recycle unwanted computers and TVs for free - see below for more information:

Street Litter Bin Sensor Trial

East Waste have recently installed bin sensors to help manage collections.

The trial is currently contained to Walkerville Terrace between Smith Street and Stephen Terrace and involves sensors

on the bins that monitor the bin fill level and notifies East Waste when the bin is full. The aim is to improve collection

schedules and better understand when illegal commercial dumping is taking place.

Tree replacement on Tyne Street

Tree planting is due to commence in June.

The work is expected to be completed by the end of July.
