THE WISCONSIN CHILD CARE ADMINISTRATORS ASSOCIATION invites its members,

colleagues, and partners to the 2017 ANNUAL CONFERENCE!

On behalf of WCCAA, we are delighted to once again host this annual event which provides sustainable value to our attendees through excellent programming and content, networking, and scholarship-driven opportunities. Join fellow administrators, directors, owners, and champions of the child care industry to the 39th Annual WCCAA Conference, taking place Wednesday, February 22 through Friday, February 24, 2017 at The Osthoff Resort, in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin.

For the first year, we also welcome members of the WISCONSIN AFTERSCHOOL ASSOCIATION (WAA) to our conference. Check out our workshop programs on Thursday, February 23 that are specifically designed to target administrators and owners that specialize in school-age child care. WAA members will receive the WCCAA member registration rates.

We are fortunate this year to feature two distinguished and dynamic keynote speakers: SCOTT LESNICK and THERESA FRENCH.

Scott Lesnick is a high content speaker who is motivational, informative, and educational in style and tone. Scott’s motivational and inspirational messages center around topics including: children, great leadership, generational and cultural inclusion, professional development, maximizing performance, and many more.

His memoir, “Kidjacked – A Father’s Story”, was published to critical acclaim. “Kidjacked” is the true account of how he accomplished the rescue of his two small children who were kidnapped to the Middle East!

Theresa French draws from her 20-plus years of “road tested, business approved” experience to fundamentally change organizations from the inside out. From leadership, communication, personal development, and designing growth plans, Theresa’s undeniable passion is clear: “To evoke growth for your organization through the power of your people.”

Your attendance and contributions to this conference are key to the success of not only our association, but also to the ROSIE BAKER SCHOLARSHIP FUND. Session 1B: 4Ever Learning to be a Competent Administrator/Director – Angel Stoddard, UW-MilwaukeeGwen Morgan said, “The director is the key to quality.” Together, we will explore a new framework of competencies designed for administrators and directors that take a deep and look into the knowledge, skills, and dispositions required to be effective and inspiring. Plan for engaging conversations around the work that you do, as well as reflective time to take a look at yourself as a leader and manager. You will walk away with a clear understanding of your strengths and areas for professional development.

Session 2A: Maintaining a Thinking Environment by Utilizing Your Veteran Staff – Kelly Zdanovec and Cheryl Rasmussen, Davis Child Care CenterThis workshop is designed to utilize the veterans on your teaching staff to keep the facility focused, energized, competitive, and exciting. This ensures teachers stay with the organization and build their careers. The focus will be on concrete ways to motivate staff to think outside the box to create excitement among their peers and families. This will demonstrate how keeping a “team” attitude can solidify your staff and the families will reap the benefits.

Session 2B: W.O.W. Basic Self Defense – DiAnn Stasik, Work Out World & Home FitnessThis seminar is for people at any fitness or skill level. Participants are introduced to basic self-defense: evasive maneuvers, open-hand counter defensive actions, and to use everyday objects. We will work in pairs to create practical situations and learn the seven essential strikes.

Session 3A: Higher Education…The Reward is in the Journey – Sue Vincent and Missy Schmeling, Encompass Early Education and CareAre you struggling to recruit qualified staff and maintain the higher education requirements of NAEYC and YoungStar? We will share our journey of strategically planning, implementing, and maintaining our success in supporting and developing a highly-educated early childhood workforce.

Session 3B: Designing Supportive Environments for Children who have Experienced Trauma – Michelle Weirich, Blackhawk Technical CollegeAre you working with children in your classroom who have experienced some type of trauma? This may include divorce, domestic violence, abuse, neglect, homelessness, incarceration of a caregiver, or living with a caregiver who abuses alcohol or drugs? If you answered yes, then this workshop is for you. In this workshop, you will discover the prevalence of adverse childhood experiences (ACES), the impact on a child’s development, and identify strategies in creating trauma-sensitive environments.

Session 4A: It’s Not Just About Taking Out the Trash – Amy Tamsen, People GuruAs relationships unfold, feelings can be displaced, which can cause stress. We may not realize how deeply they are affecting so many layers of our lives. Our conversations will look at communication and our lens with which we “filter” our interactions. (But there will be no garbage duty.)

Session 4B: Keeping a Good Reputation – Janice Borchart, Little Saints Child Care CenterWhat keeps parents bringing their children to your program? Why would a parent tell others about what your program is doing? What does cost have to do with quality? This session will focus on knowing your vision and sticking to it!

Session 4C: Communication: Own with Your Tone – Missy Dieterich, Work & Family ConsultingListen up! In this workshop, you will obtain the tools to effectively communicate with your staff, so they are actually listening to you and not just hearing you. Learn how to give respect so you can gain respect. If your words are going in one ear and out the other, you won’t want to miss this session!

Session 4D: A New Way of Thinking about Child Care Classrooms: The Continuous Care Model – Haley Hennlich, SonShine Learning CenterAs early childhood educators, we want to serve and educate our students to their highest potential. What if you could increase their potential and ability to learn by how your teaching team is structured? We will work together on the research, functionality, and potential implementation of the Continuous Care Model.

Session 4E: Are We Speaking the Same Language? – Ann-Marie St. John, Apple Ridge AcademyAre you a doer, thinker, influencer, or connector? What may seem to be a simple conversation is actually a process that can have obstacles at every stage. In this session, we will discuss what effective communication is, why it is important, and find solutions to overcome the obstacles!

Session 4F: Culturally Responsive Teaching in Early Childhood Classrooms – Michele Turner, Next Level Consulting & TrainingThis is an interactive workshop that provides tools to help early childhood educators clarify their roles, identify their unintended biases, and recognize the importance of providing a culturally-relevant environment and curriculum for all young children, regardless of background. This session also helps providers learn how to build a bridge between each child’s family and society.

Session 4G: Will Your Business Survive a Disaster? The Steps to Take Beyond Insurance – Dan Riedel, Woller-AngerAs an owner or director, the work you’ve done makes your center a success. What would you do if your center were impacted by a disaster such as tornado, fire, flood, or other loss? Would your business survive? On average, 25% of businesses never reopen after a disaster! Developing an appropriate preparedness program can mean the difference between we’ve reopened or we’re out of business! This session will inform you how to make your program be one of the 75% that reopen.

Session 7H: eParenting Little Ones Childcare Center Partnership Project – Pattie Carroll, Kristen Bruder, and Brook Berg, UW-ExtensionBuilding relationships and sharing information with parents can be difficult—especially when it comes to a topic like digital media use and their little ones! Join this session to learn about the University of Wisconsin-Extension’s “eParenting Little Ones” program, which is an innovative way to share important information with parents through video-based, micro-learning opportunities.

Session 8A: Culture & Performance – PART 2 – Kim Fabich, Work & Family Consulting and Michael Fabich, Foxwood AssociatesThe organizational culture of your program has a significant impact on every aspect of your business and its performance. This impact can be either positive or negative. If you are not managing your program culture, it is managing you! We will look into how culture is formed, how it is embedded into your program through onboarding systems for new hires, communication and customer service, and

how it becomes a self-reinforcing component of your business.

Session 8B: Mud, Snow, and the Smell of Fresh Cut Grass – Christine Kuntz, UW-Stevens PointThe outdoor environment is an important part of early childhood education. Join us for a review of the research and explore new ideas of how to make your program bloom outdoors.

Session 8C: Motivating, Managing, and Mentoring Multi-Generations – Scott LesnickSuccessfully blending the five generations currently in the child care workplace can be a tall order. Your leadership is the key! Our goal is to help support happier, more productive employees, while also maintaining focus on our children. This interactive session covers strategic methods of improving employee morale, improving operational efficiency, increasing employee retention, and improving employee productivity. You will learn how to find it, how to harness it, and how to keep it.

Session 9A: Inspiring Change – Theresa FrenchChange is something that excites people who love opportunities for growth, to see and learn about new things, or who like to shift the status quo. Some changes, however, are harder to adjust to and lead to expressions of resistance and anger. We can take concrete steps to make changes more palatable by understanding hesitations, enlisting the help of others, setting up plans, and managing stressors. These steps can also ensure that desired changes are implemented successfully. In this workshop, you will learn how to manage and cope with change and how to help those around you too.

Session 9B: Managing Workplace Conflict – Kathleen Monson and Glenn Monson, Mary Linsmeier SchoolsThis workshop will discuss the nature and types of workplace conflict. It will teach you how to identify and adapt your own personal conflict management style to various situations both in and out of the child care workplace for successful resolution.

Session 9C: 2017-18 YoungStar Evaluation Criteria and Updates, Bridget Cullen, DCFThis session will present YoungStar updates for the upcoming year. There will be opportunities to ask questions and network with other similar programs around indicators in the Evaluation Criteria.

Session 9D: Challenging Behaviors: Do We Really Have to Say Goodbye? – Jodi Oye and Leah Smet, Agnesian Healthcare Treffert AcademyThis session will discuss challenging behaviors in preschool-aged children and provide administrators and staff the resources to work with the behaviors to reduce the number of children that are dismissed from centers for behavioral reasons. Learn how Treffert Academy has created an inclusive classroom setting for all abilities, including children on the Autism spectrum and other behavioral challenges.

Session 9E: Vision Brings Success – Caroline Jens, Launch Now AgencyAs quoted by Tony Robbins, “Where your focus goes, energy flows.” What if your staff and leadership team were focused on one unified vision? The amount of energy into achieving that focus would be multiplied and gain such momentum that there would be no doubt your team could obtain their goal. Learn how to develop a vision that will unify and excite your team. Once you’ve developed your concept, learn how to implement and get your team engaged. This in turn, will make your center more successful because you will have happier, engaged staff, working together toward one vision.

Session 9F: Wages, Benefits, Education, and Turnover: What We Know and Where We Go – Peggy Haack, WECAWorkforce issues are once again coming to the forefront of our profession. This session will showcase the surprising and not-so-surprising results of the 2016 Wisconsin Workforce Study. Share your story and engage in the conversation about the role compensation plays in professionalizing our field. We’ll discuss ideas on how to use this information in your program and in your community.

Membership Categories:

Individual: Owns, operates, administers, and/or those who work directly in providing child care services and/or those who have retired from a licensed or legally exempt group child care center or centers and/or preschool in the state of Wisconsin. Any person who is directly providing child care services MUST choose this category. This is a voting membership and eligible for scholarships.

Friends of WCCAA: Any other individual that does not fall into the previous category, but who is a child care advocate. "Friends" will receive a WCCAA newsletter and get access to and discounts on trainings. This is a non-voting membership and not eligible for scholarships.

Group: Will be open to group child care programs that have three or more members from the same agency (must have the same Federal ID #). If the same group site/program/center/agency wants more than three members, the group rate would go into effect. All group members have voting privileges and are eligible for scholarships.

WCCAA/Early Learning Leaders Affiliate: A joint partnership between WCCAA and another organization committed to professionalism and/or quality early care and education. WCCAA members have the option to be an Affiliate member of the Association for Early Learning Leaders by paying an additional $85.00. The regular yearly membership with the Association of Early Learning Leaders is $130.00, so this is discounted by $45.00. The Association for Early Learning Leaders is the nation's leader among associations serving child care owners, directors, and administrators. Early Learning Leaders is also the sponsor of NAC Accreditation. (Please fill out additional form on page 2 if applying for this membership). This is a voting membership and eligible for scholarships.
