Howdy! I want to welcome you to the Real Wild West. Gallup is a city that still lives by the Cowboy Code of Ethics. We come to agreements with a handshake, tip our hats and open doors for ladies, and we honor our Native American History and Culture.

I hope you take the opportunity to immerse yourself in the unique Native Arts and Crafts for which Gallup and our surrounding area is world-famous. Without a doubt, there are more home-based artists making turquoise and silver jewelry, Navajo rugs, Kachina dolls, pottery and Southwest paintings, than any other area of our great country. Visit any of our 100 businesses that showcase the quality of our Native American art.

Our slogan, Gallup Real True; provides insight to our respect for the past and to our current lifestyle. Our Hispanic culture offers us a healthy lifestyle and daily sensory pleasures. We bike the amazing trails of our high desert geography; we rodeo every weekend throughout the summer; and we fly high above our red rocks in hot air balloons year round.

Nightly Indian Dances are available to watch from Memorial Day to Labor Day in our Downtown Veteran’s Plaza. There you will find some of the stories for why Gallup was designated Most Patriotic Small Town in America. We are extremely proud of our area’s service in all military branches.

Located on Interstate-40, immortalized in song, “Get your Kicks on Route 66,” Gallup is your hub for various destinations, such as the Navajo Nation, Canyon de Chelley, Chaco Canyon, Monument Valley and the Grand Canyon. The Zuni Pueblo is just 30-minutes south and then just a short distance further is

the El Morro National Monument. High Mountain Desert plateaus to rugged National Forest, separated by 30-minutes, make our landscape the Adventure Capitol of New Mexico.

So, sit down for a spell; enjoy our delicious green or red chile dishes, explore our untamed and unpretentious spirit of the Wild West, and take home the values that generations before us shared and lived by.

Thank you for choosing to visit us. We look forward to your return visit because once is just not enough!

Jackie McKinney,

Mayor of Gallup

Daytime Exploration: History Itinerary Make sure to stop for a breakfast burrito- red or green, Gallup has some of the best breakfast burritos in the region. Start your history journey at the Gallup Visitors Center at the Na-vajo Code Talkers Exhibit. From there head down to the Veterans Museum at the Comfort Suites Hotel (featuring Gallup’s own Medal of Honor Awardee Hiroshi Miyamura). Down the road a bit further you can swing through the Red Rock Park Museum, which fea-

tures a collection of historic native artifacts and histories of the tribes in the region. Circle back toward Gallup and stop at the Gallup Cultural Center’s Storytellers Museum, where kachinas, train models, and sand paintings demonstrate even more of Gallup’s rich Native American History as well as the historic development of Gallup. End your trip at the his-toric Rex Museum for information about Gallup’s beginnings and rich coal mining history.

Daytime Exploration: Arts and Culture Itinerary First, make sure to stop for one of Gallup’s amazing breakfast burritos with red or green chile, then head out to visit any of the 100 trading posts or 1,000 artists in the region to get your hands on some authentic Native American Arts. Follow the free walking tour of the Downtown Murals (see page 31) and stop in for a cup of Gallup’s “New Mexico True Certified” locally roasted coffee at Gallup Coffee Company. While you’re there browse their rotating collection of art by local artists, then take a walk right down Second Street and catch three art galleries: Art123, OPO Gallery, and Gallery Free Spirit. End your exploration at the historic McKinley County Court House, built in 1938 in the Spanish Pueblo Revival Style. The Courthouse houses a New Deal Art Collection and a beautiful historic courtroom with a wraparound mural depicting the history of the Gallup region.

Evening Exploration Explore the Downtown Murals with a guided walk (see page 31) and then do some shop-ping along Route 66. From May-September experience the free Nightly Indian Dances at Courthouse Plaza, (see page 29) and then head own down to the El Rancho Hotel and visit a scene in film history, the hotel where the stars stayed! If you’re a sports fan, stop by Sammy C’s Rockin’ Sports Pub and Grille for the largest collection of sports memorabilia in western New Mexico. For an entertainment getaway visit the historic El Morro Theatre, built in 1928 in the Spanish Colonial Baroque style, for a movie or event.

Outdoor Adventures Meets Cultural Destinations North (1 Day) Kick off your day in downtown Gal-lup with our “Daytime Exploration” itinerary, then head to Red Rock Park, where you can hike over eight miles of trails. Then hop in the car or bus to head out to Window Rock, AZ, the capital of the Navajo Nation. Experi-ence the Navajo Nation Museum and Zoo, as well as the gorgeous Window Rock and Code Talkers Memorial.

Outdoor Adventures Meets Cultural Destinations South (1 Day) After a tasty breakfast in Gallup head south to the El Morro National Monument for a gorgeous hike and some rich history between Inscription Rock and the Anasazi Ruins. Heading west, there are tours of Hawikku, the Zuni Pueblo’s First City (and the fabled City of Gold), or take a tour of the Middle Village at the Zuni Pueblo.

Exploring the Arts (3/4 Day)Start your journey with a visit to the oldest trading post in Gallup, Richardson’s (ask to see their Rug and Painting collections!). Then head northwest to the historic Hubbell Trading Post, a National Historic Site and the oldest continuously operated trading post on the Navajo Nation. From there head to Window Rock and explore Griswold’s, a fifth genera-tion reservation Indian Trading family. Head back to Gallup and visit Ellis Tanners or Perry Null and meet artists as they come and go throughout the day. On a Saturday you can also visit the Gallup Flea Market to meet directly with artist and vendors, or Sunday, the Navajo Flea Market in Window Rock. You can also add a visit to any one of the six art galleries or small museums in the area.

Gallup was founded in 1881 as a railhead for the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad. The city was named after David Gallup, a paymaster for the railroad.

Gallup is often called the “Indian Capital of the World” for its location in the heart of Native American lands and the presence of Navajo, Zuni, Hopi, and other tribes.

The historic El Morro Theatre in Gallup, New Mexico, is a movie theatre and performing arts center. Designed by noted theater architect Carl Boller, the facility opened in 1928 as a “castle of pleasure and art”. It shares a common heritage with the KiMo Theater in Albuquerque and the Lensic Theater in Santa Fe, both also being Boller-designed theaters. Today, the 460-seat theater is used for film exhibition and performing arts. In 2015, the city dedicated the El Morro Events Center, a multi-purpose meeting facility that is connected to the historic theatre. In addition, the theatre features comfortable seating, a new Dolby Digital 7.1 Sound System, a high-end Christie Digital Projector, and new curtains and aisle lights to make your movie going experience top notch. Tours of the facility are free during business hours (evenings after 6pm and weekends between 2pm-10pm) or by appointment (call 505-726-7550).  In addition, programs and showtimes, as well as historic photos, can be found at www.elmorrotheatre.com.

BUYING AUTHENTICCollectors and Art Lovers from around the world come to Gallup to purchase authentic Native American art. The popularity of Native American jewelry has grown tremendously, but that has resulted in a blossoming imitation art industry. Advocates for the authenticity of Native American arts are fighting hard against those who are damaging the livelihood of the genuine Native Artists. Fortunately, there are ways that you can learn how to shop “real”.Here are three recommendations on how to discern the quality of the jewelry you’re shopping for:

1. Ask the questions: a. Is it nickel or sterling silver? b. Is the turquoise treated, stabilized, or natural? c. Is the piece stamped by an artist? All of these questions add up to factor into the next suggestion.

2. Determine if the deal is “too good to be true”. a. Natural turquoise is a high grade gem quality stone and many of the mines have closed over the years so the supply is limited. This comes with a higher price tag.

48

Page 49: 2017 VisitorÕs Guide - Gallup Is Nm True · Love a LOTA LOTABURGER R Blakes’ We Love Gallup so Much, We Have 4 Locations to Better Serve You! 810 S 2ND ST (505) 863-3181 Open Mon

b. Some pieces may be nickel silver with sterling silver plating. You can tell by the weight of the piece (especially larger ones like bolos and cuff bracelets) - the heavier the piece the more likely it is that the material is sterling. c. Sterling silver comes at a higher cost and you also need to factor in the labor of the artist.

3. Make more than one stop and ask around – get the local insight. a. Ask the residents of the community where they shop. b. Ask people about their favorite artists and why- some artists deal exclusively with particular traders and you want to make sure you’re headed in the right direction c. Look at reviews on travel sites (Tripadvisor, Yelp, etc) and check out the artist and trader’s websites. Many have websites that can give you more in-depth information about the artists themselves and how the pieces are made.

There is a directory of traders in this visitor’s guide as well as on www.GallupRealTrue.com, where you can find links to their websites.

Regardless of quality and price we encourage you to invest in what you love- if you love how it looks, take it home. We want you to be able to talk about your experience buying your piece positively and with pride, and there is something for every collector and shopper in Gallup.

FIBER ARTS— NAVAJO STYLEIn 1886, a trader by the name of John Bradford (J.B.) Moore purchased a Trading Post in Crystal, New Mexico. Located at the base of the Chuska Mountains on the west side, it made for a beautiful location but with harsh winters. The previous owner would close the Trading Post during the winter months. However, J.B. would remain open and employed Navajo weavers to make rugs in a style that was loosely based on popular Oriental weavings of the time. Of course, Navajo rugs had already been woven for centuries, but they had yet to be marketed like J.B. Moore was about to do.

The J.B. Moore catalog first appeared in 1903 and was sent to potential mail order customers located in populated parts of the United States. This important catalog would introduce many for the first time to the Navajo and their crafts. Moore would educate people on the process of

Navajo rug weaving, the materials used, and the spiritual qualities of the weavings. Another catalog was published in 1911, and both catalogs would be very successful.

Other Indian Traders would play very important roles in the development of the Navajo rug industry. John Lorenzo Hubbell of the famed Hubbell Trading Post in Ganado, Arizona promoted Navajo weaving and had a part in the creations of Ganado Red and Klagetoh. Local Gallup, Indian Trader C.N. Cotton also played a pivotal role in promoting Navajo rugs. Like J.B. Moore, he would create mail order catalogs which would sell Navajo rugs across the country.

Gallup now serves as the source to find these fascinating weavings. Only a handful of Trading Posts remain on the Navajo Nation. You will find our local Trading Posts filled with Ganado Reds, vegetal-dyed Wide Ruins, storm patterns, raised outlines, Yei’ be’ Chei’, Klagetoh, and many other styles from the Navajo rug weavers. On your visit to the Trading Post, you might even be lucky enough to see one of these talented weavers come into the business to sell their rug: A transaction which can take a good amount of time to complete, where the trader and weaver go back and forth until the right price is met.

For centuries pottery has been associated with the Native American culture. These skills were essential for survival. Early Native American communities would use pottery to hold water, keep grain, store food, and keep seeds for the next growing seasons. Every time old ruins are found, you know that many different shapes and sizes of pottery will be unearthed. If you have seen one of these early pieces of pottery, you recognize that they are only similar to today’s pottery in shape and size.

Eventually, pottery would stop having a utilitarian use and become a work of art. The first tribes who would become known for their decorative pottery would be the Pueblo Tribes along the Rio Grande Valley and the Hopi who inhabit the high mesas of Arizona. Names like Nampeyo and Maria would turn a not-so-appreciated art into something highly regarded and an extremely valuable collectible. The Navajo would even begin to create their pitch pottery for the market.

The first collectors would take their buying trips to the Rio Grande Valley and the isolated Hopi Mesas. However, Gallup continued to play a very important role in

developing the Native American arts and crafts industry. This made perfect sense because of its proximity to the Navajo, Zuni and Hopi Reservations. Artists simply had to make the trip into Gallup to sell their handmade crafts. As the arts and crafts industry grew, it drew those artists from the Rio Grande Pueblos and Acoma to make the journey here to sell.

Today, when you walk into one of Gallup’s many Native American arts businesses, you will be greeted by some amazing displays of handmade pottery. You will find shelves filled with lizards, owls, and deer decorating Zuni bowls, canteens, and jars. The many styles of Hopi pottery, whether it is a decorated plate, a large wedding vase, or a unique carved Kachina. Acoma pottery will be immediately recognized because of those fine black geometric designs against a white background. Navajo artists will etch intricate designs into ceramic pottery and finish them with a delicate painted scene. Plus, you will find those coveted pieces of Santa Clara, Zia and Santa Ana Pueblo pieces that have made the journey from the Rio Grande Valley.

It isn’t what you are thinking. Pawn is a little different in Gallup. Here you will find pawn shops serve more as a personal safe then they do a traditional pawn shop. When many of you think of a pawn shop you imagine a shop filled with electronics and gold jewelry for sale. However, in Gallup you will find most of the shops that offer pawn services without huge inventories of pawn for sale, often referred to as dead pawn.

Our pawn shops are filled with turquoise bracelets, coral beads, 100-year-old Concho belts, squash blossom necklaces, ceremonial buckskins, baskets, saddles, rugs, and Pendleton blankets. These are the valuables that the Navajo and Zuni pawn customers use to secure loans instead of working with a traditional bank. It is a much easier transaction that doesn’t involve the scrutiny of a credit check and the lengthy application forms of a bank loan. It is a system that has worked here since New Mexico was a territory instead of a State.

You also need to remember the vastness of the Navajo Nation and the remoteness of the Zuni Reservation. Many customers use the pawn shop to keep their family heirlooms safe. Pawn Shop vaults serve as the customer’s personal safe and are filled with priceless family heirlooms. These prized possessions will be taken out when needed for special occasions like ceremonies, graduations, weddings and when they are passed onto the next generation.

No trip to Gallup is complete without a visit to one of our great Pawn Shops. Once you enter a local pawn shop, you will be immersed in an old way of doing business. Pawn clerks know the name of their customers, and the customers use their time in the pawn shop to visit with other customers they haven’t seen in a while. Plus, if you ask nice enough you might just get a tour of one of these fascinating businesses.

When the United States Government moved west and started to claim territory, a system was needed to take care of these new American citizens. The Government gave contracts to adventurous businessmen who would set up Trading Posts on the remote parts of the Navajo Reservation. These new businesses would supply area residents with the essentials like coffee and flour. It would eventually evolve into a very important part of the community.

As the years passed and Gallup transitioned into a major trade center for the Navajo Nation, many of these Indian Traders would move off of the Reservation and into Gallup. The roles of the Trading Post would also change. No longer would their shelves be supplying local residents with the everyday essentials, but instead showcases would be added to display all of the beautiful Native American arts and crafts which were being made by our local artisans.

Gallup is the destination for Native American arts and crafts buyers. Buyers might be individual collectors or wholesalers who come here to purchase authentic Native American arts for their own businesses. The success of marketing Native American arts and crafts to those outside our region has created a thriving cottage industry for our local Native American artisans. It is not uncommon to find entire families who work fulltime in hand-making arts and crafts for local businesses.

This system of local craftsmen and Trading Posts works perfectly. It allows the artist to concentrate on their work without having to operate a retail outlet. The Trading Post is able to accumulate a diverse collection from various artists to please the tastes of the many different buyers who make the journey here. If your trip to Gallup wasn’t about Native American art, you definitely need to make time to visit one of our many Trading Posts. Once you walk through the doors of one of these businesses, you will be amazed by all the gleaming silver and beautiful stones, colorful rugs, detailed Kachina carvings, paintings, and incredible pottery.

RED OR GREEN CHILE?

No, your waitress isn’t asking if you want a bowl of chili with your meal. Because in New Mexico, the word “chile” does not usually refer to the common hearty bean soup, but rather to chile peppers.

In Gallup, having chile offered as a part of our meal is often unavoidable. Chile is put on and in everything from pizza and breakfast burritos, to steaks, pies, fast foods, and even some local New Mexican beers.

All chiles start off as green and then turn yellow and red as they ripen. Contrary to popular belief, the green is almost always hotter than the red. Green chile can come as a fresh topping like chopped green pepper or as a sauce.

Chile is truly a local food. New Mexico has twelve chile producing counties, and it is the state’s top cash crop. Not surprisingly, New Mexico ranks first in the world for the amount of chile produced and acreage planted.

So back to the question, “red or green?” Try either on one of your meals today, or order your meal Christmas style, which includes both red and green chile.
