Principal’s ReportVariety Night Success

We have enjoyed a number of successful events at Corowa High School over the last few weeks, including Variety Night, which was a fantastic showcase for the talents of our student body. Well done to all of the students who participated in the event, including both the performers and those students involved in stage management, sound and lighting. The night was a fantastic compilation of dancing, public speaking and all kinds of music. I attended both nights and was impressed with both the quality of student performance and the engagement of our community in this event. It was lovely to see our local representatives in attendance and members of the local community who no longer have students at the school but are always supportive of our students. Just as heartening was the number of teachers, parents, grandparents, siblings, aunts, uncles and other family members who supported the students on the night. Special mention must be made of both Miss McCleary and Mrs Bridges who spent endless hours supporting this endeavour and ensuring its success – thank you both.

Tournament of Minds Reigonal Final Win!

Corowa High School’s Tournament of Minds team also enjoyed success at the Regional Finals in Wagga Wagga on the weekend. Congratulations to team members Jay Compton, Rosie Blain, Lachlan McKenzie, Max Blockley, Jacob Read, Laura O’Shannassy and Olivia Hughes for their hard won success. We wish them the best of luck at the State Finals in Sydney on Sunday 10 September.

HSC Examination Pieces

Year 12 students have only a few weeks of schooling to go before their secondary education concludes. In this last week I’ve had the privilege of reading some fantastic submitted works for Extension 2 English and exploring some amazing pieces students have built for their Industrial Technology Timber projects. Congratulations to the students and teachers for the production of such high quality works. I know there are many more remarkable works to be produced and look forward to celebrating them all with our seniors and staff.

Year 12 Students Approach the Finish Line

As these last weeks come to a close and we approach this important milestone for Year 12 it is essential that students continue to talk to their parents, teachers and Mrs Lake as Careers Advisor about how to reach their future goals and ambitions. Most importantly, however, I encourage them to enjoy this moment and think about how this brief, albeit exciting, moment in their lives is only one small adventure amongst the many that will follow. Be safe, be wise, be healthy and enjoy your last few weeks at Corowa High School.

Dr Joanne Bellette

Returning Permission NotesParents and students are reminded that notes and money must be returned on or before the date specified or your child will not be allowed to attend the excursion. Payment plans may be put in place in special circumstances, but must be organised ahead of time.

RFS CadetsSuperintendent Pat Westwood from the NSW Rural Fire Service (RFS) visited Corowa High School last week to present seven Year 10 students with their Certificates of Completion of the RFS Secondary Service Cadet Program. Students attended a ten-week training program during Term 2 and 3 this year, and should be very proud of what they have achieved.

Special thanks must go to David Turner for his organisation of the program and to Dot McNamara, Maddy Thompson and Bill Wade from the Corowa branch of the RFS for their support and guidance.

Cows Create CareersAgriculture students are currently participating in the ‘Cows Create Careers’ program with Dairy Australia in which they have the care of two bobby calves. The six-week program is a hands-on learning experience that encompasses all facets of caring for dairy calves, including feeding and keeping record of weight gain. Students also learn about the wide range of careers available in the dairy industry as part of the program. Riverina Milk has supplied the calves for this program and we would like to take this opportunity to thank Riverina Milk for its continued support of Corowa High School Agriculture program.

Year 8 Can TalkMrs Goodall’s Year 8 Science class were experimenting out in the sunshine earlier this week. As part of their studies on the movement of sound, students travelled back to a time before mobile phones and took to the school grounds with their tin-can phones. Students experimented with earpieces (tin cans, styrofoam and plastic cups) and discerned if sound travelled better with slack or tight strings.

Tournament of Minds Regional SuccessThis year, for the first time, seven Corowa High School students are participating in an international competition called Tournament of Minds. Tournament of Minds is a problem solving competition in which teams of seven students are required to solve demanding, open-ended challenges from one of the following disciplines: Language and Literature, Social Sciences, Engineering and Mathematics, or Science and Technology.

The objectives of the tournament are for students to develop creative, problem-solving approaches and techniques as well as foster teamwork, encourage experimentation and risk taking, expand and reward creative and divergent thinking and to stimulate a spirit of inquiry and a love of learning.

To achieve this, students have to work together to solve a ‘Long Term Challenge’ over a six week period. The students are then required to present their challenge solution to a panel of judges and an audience on Tournament day. They must also participate in an unseen ‘Spontaneous Challenge’ where they are given approximately five minutes to have a rapid interchange of ideas and demonstrate the ability to think creatively whilst establishing exceptional group cooperation skills in the development of their solution.

This year our Tournament of Minds team includes: Olivia Hughes, Laura O’Shannassy, Jacob Read, Max Blockley, Jay Compton, Rosie Blain and Lachlan McKenzie. The students competed in the Regional Finals in the discipline of Engineering and Mathematics and were required to design and build a lottery machine that randomly delivers a subset of numbered balls, however, the device had to include a secret modification that could then improve the odds of preferred numbers being drawn. In addition to designing and building the machine, the team had to create a dramatic performance explaining why the machine is required and who the preferred candidates for the win would be.

After six weeks of team work, problem-solving and creative endeavour our team was ready to compete against both public and private schools from across the Riverina on Sunday. On the day their device was both elegant and effective – producing exactly the required numbers, and their performance incorporated humour and irony and was very well received. Their response to the Spontaneous Challenge was both thoughtful and creative ensuring that the team won the Regional Finals and are now off to the State Finals in Sydney.

Congratulations to the team on all of their hard work and success to date, and we wish them the best of luck at State!
