From the Office of the Interim CEO

I would like to give a heartfelt welcome to the 2017 Spring

Semester student body of UNM-Taos. As your Interim CEO,

I understand your challenges and respect your passion to

create more productive and engaged lives for yourselves

and your families through education. I would very much

like to meet all of you, and I hope you take advantage of

the “Coffee with Dr. Marty” sessions at 11 a.m. on the first

Thursday of every month in the Food for Thought Café.

Bring your questions, concerns and suggestions, and we’ll

get to know one another.

As you are probably aware, New Mexico has experienced

an economic shortfall that has impacted all institutions

of higher education in the state including our community

college. Let me assure you that we have the situation

under control and that we are working to ensure that all

of our classes and everything we do remain intact. We are

doing our best to maintain a healthy learning environment.

One thing we can always rely on is the positive climate in

Taos County for higher education. In my opinion, none of

the other branches have the level of support that we have,

and the proof of that is the recent passage of this year’s

General Obligation Bond C. We are now in the position to

complete the last component of our campus master plan:

the expansion of the Career Technical building into the

STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Center.

With roughly 40 percent of our majors in STEM fields, the

four million dollar project will expand our capacity to teach

in those areas.

Please enjoy the art, the landscaping and the new

architecture on your campus, and have a great semester.

Dr. Martinez “Marty” Hewlett, Interim CEO

From the Office of the Dean

Welcome to a brand new semester at UNM-Taos. As the

Dean of Instruction, I have oversight over the faculty and

the curriculum, and it’s my department’s job to make

sure our faculty are fully prepared to provide the best

educational experience possible. I’m excited to be able to

offer some new degrees this year and next, such as our

Commercial Driver’s License program. We are also proud

to offer Associate of Arts, Associate of Science, Associate

of Applied Science degrees, and certificates in career-

technical fields.

In addition, we are hoping to offer new degrees in

Emergency Medical Services, Certified Nurse Assistant,

Entrepreneurship, Medical Billing and Coding, Community

Health, and Hospitality in fall 2017. The Department of

Instruction is comprised of four areas: Academic Curricula,

Business and Professional Skills, Health Sciences and

Academic Support.

Some people think that our only responsibility is faculty

support, when in fact we are also a student support

service. We are here to maximize students’ educational

experience, and we serve as a bridge between

different departments because none of us can function

independently. At the end of the day it’s all about what’s

in the best interest of our students. When you think about

it, after being admitted and advised, much of a student’s

engagement at this institution is in the classroom, making

faculty a large part of the student experience at UNM Taos.

I urge you to stop by the Department of Instruction in

Pueblo Hall West if you need assistance or just want to say

hello.

That’s what we’re here for.

Dr. Randi Archuleta, Dean of Instruction, and DOI Staff:

Roberta Vigil, Erica Holmes-Trujillo, Peter Snyder, and Ana

Pacheco

Welcome, New and Returning Students

Adding and Dropping CoursesStudents may drop and add courses on the web at http://my.unm.edu or in person.

Do not expect your instructor to drop you if you stop attending class.See Important Dates pages for deadlines. Call the Student Affairs Department at 575-737-6215 for complete information.

Upon completion of the semester, students receiving a failing or withdrawal grade for all courses will be required to provide documentation stating he/ she was in attendance all semester. If a student cannot provide the documentation requested he/she will have to pay back all financial aid they received for that semester.

PLEASE NOTE: Your instructor will not automatically drop you if you stop attending class and you may receive a failing grade.

Cancellation Due to Lack of Financial CommitmentStudents who fail to pay their full tuition and fees (including second 8-week courses or second 4 week courses in summer) or have not made financial arrangements with the cashier’s office on or before 5:00pm on the scheduled financial disenrollment deadline date will have their registration cancelled and will be disenrolled from all classes. The student must pay tuition in full or make financial arrangements for all university charges. Course Wait List A wait list is an electronic list of students who are waiting to register for a full class. Students may sign up for this when they attempt to register for a section

that has reached its capacity. The first student on the registration wait list is notified via email when a space becomes available. This student then has a maximum of 48 hours (24 hours once the semester starts) or until 5pm on the Add Deadline Date, whichever comes first, to register for the section. If the student does not register for the section within this time frame, he/she will be dropped from the wait list for that section and the next student on the list will be notified.

Course Wait List Policies and Procedures 1. Any eligible student wishing to enroll in a course that has reached its authorized capacity may add themselves to one section of that course’s wait list. A student is wait listed in the order in which s/he attempts to register for the course.

2. A student on the wait list is not officially enrolled in that course and is not eligible to receive a grade in that course.

3. Being on the wait list does not guarantee registration in the class or that a new section will be made available for the same time frame or instructor.

4. A student on a wait list may attend the wait listed course, if seating is available and with the instructor’s permission.

5. Students on a wait list will have conflicts checked with prerequisites, but not duplicate

For this purpose, curriculum checklists are available from the UNM-Taos Department of Student Services for the various degree programs. A request for a degree check should be submitted by each student upon completion of at least 40 credit hours toward an Associate degree or 20 credit hours toward a Certificate. One semester prior to the semester in which the student expects to graduate, a student must petition to graduate by completing a Petition for Graduation form and submitting it to the Department of StudentAffairs.

Academic Advisement

UNM-Taos Academic Advisors support students to ensure success-ful progression to graduation. Students are encouraged to meet with their academic advisor every semester.

• Understand Your Certificate or Associate Degree. One size does not fit all. Academic Advisors listen to the needs and wants of each student to collectively create a plan toward degree completion.

• Do More Than Make a Class Schedule. In addition to helping students choose classes for the semester, Academic Advisors guide decision-making regarding how students’ time at UNM-Taos can help them transfer to a 4 year degree program or enter the workforce.

• Collaborate to Graduate. Students can collaborate with their academic advisor and gain useful information on a variety of campus resources to enhance their educational experience and obtain their degree in a timely manner.

All UNM Taos academic advisors are members of National Aca-demic Advising Association, enabling advisors to stay current on advising trends and research.

The primary goal of the program is to increase the rate at which participants enroll in and complete postsecondary education programs.

VUB Projects provides short-term remedial or refresher courses for veterans who are high school graduates but have delayed pursuing postsecondary education. The program assists veterans in securing support services from other locally available resources such as the Veterans Administration, state veterans agencies, veteran associations, and other state and local agencies that serve veterans.

UNM Extended Learning (formerly Bachelor & Graduate Online Programs)Through partnership with the University of New Mexico’s four branch campuses, as well as selected community colleges, UNM is able to expand opportunities for students around the state. Branches are responsible for lower-division curriculum leading to a wide array of associate degrees. Extended Learning expands upon these e orts by creating the path for students to attain selected University of New Mexico bachelor and advanced degrees through delivery of upper-division and graduate-level programming. This programming is o ered using online tools.

About Online Courses By using a computer with internet access, students can take classes taught by regular UNM faculty on a standard semester basis. Online courses provide diverse interactions with classmates and instructors, and use the same rigorous materials as their classroom counterparts, while providing greater freedom in choosing when and where learning will take place. While many online classes do not have xed meeting times, some instructors do require regular synchronous/simultaneous meetings. Through web conferencing tools, some classes o ered at main campus can be transmitted simultaneously for online participation from other locations. All required synchronous class meetings are listed in the schedule of classes.

There are two types of course delivery formats available.1. Synchronous Online - has xed meeting times.

Students log in at a scheduled time to participate in the course. These courses (many o ered formerly via Interactive Television) are now available via desktop with internet accessibility, making it convenient for a student to access the class.

2. Asynchronous Online - has no required meeting times. Students log in and participate as their schedule permits.

In both types of online course, UNM faculty have the discretion to require face-to-face meetings, such as for exams or lab work. Detailed course information is available at the UNM Online Schedule of Classes. Students are also encouraged to email questions about the course format to instructors.
