Netball Australia Long Term Athlete Development Plan
The Netball Australia Long Term Athlete Development (LTAD) plan provides a platform on which to guide
good practice with regard to the development of technical, tactical and sport specific competencies. The
plan provides guidelines for implementing training and competition programs, as care should be taken
that the developmental athlete does not under-train and over compete. The philosophy supporting the
plan is based on Dr. Istvan Balyi’s Long Term Athlete Development Model.
Netball is a late specialisation sport. That is it
requires a more generalised approach to early
training with the emphasis of training being
focused on the development of general,
fundamental motor and technical/tactical skills.
Participants should progress when they are
developmentally ready and not when they reach
a certain age.
The Long Term Athlete Development Plan is
divided into the following stages:
Foundation Stage (Developing Athletes –
NetSetGO)
This stage is well structured and emphasises the
learning of the fundamental movement skills
through a positive and fun approach to the
athletes. Exposure to many sports with physical
capacities developed through playing a variety of
games. Physical activity 5-6 times per week with
session times 30-60 minutes.
Development Stage (Learning to Train –
Developing Athletes, chronological age 11-13
years)
This stage concentrates on a range of
fundamental sport skills including throwing,
catching, jumping, running and basic game
formats that encourage fun, skill development
and decision making. They will perform physical
activity 5-6 times a week, with about 50% of time
spent playing other sports to assist in developing
a broad base of physical competencies.
Intermediate Stage (Training to Train –
chronological age 14+)
This stage also includes older athletes with no
training background. Emphasises the building of
fitness and specific sports skills and includes
physical preparation training, sport specific skill
development including perceptual skills, reading
the game, tactical introduction and decision
making. The emphasis is on training as opposed
to competing. 75% training to 25% competition
ratio is recommended. They may participate in
training 5-8 times per week. Athletes who miss
this stage may never reach their full potential
regardless of remedial programs.
Advanced Stage (Training to Compete)
This stage includes athletes with a training
background and incorporate high intensity
individual and sport specific training which aims
to refine the athlete’s skills for a specific event
and/or position and application to a competition
situation. 50:50 ratio of training to competition
is recommended. Of the training portion 50% is
the development of technical and tactical
capabilities as well as fitness. 50% is competition
specific training. Training could be up to 9 times
per week.
Elite Stage (Training to Win)
Elite athletes are trained to peak for major
competition. Training is high intensity and high
volume. Well periodised models are introduced
to program recovery. Emphasis is placed on the
competition period. Training could be up to 10
times per week.
Retainment/Retaining Stage
Athletes retire from competition completely and
possibly move into sport related areas such as
coaching, media and administration.
