TheteachingandlearningprogramsatStPaul’sandKildareCollegeaimtoprovideforstudentseducationthatiswelldocumentedandappropriatetothedevelopmentalandindividuallearningneedsofeachstudent.Curriculumisdesignedwithanoutcomesbasedapproachandbuildsonlearningfromyeartoyear.

ThefoundationframeworksonwhichthetwoCollege’scurriculaarebasedarethe:Australian Curriculum, the South Australian Curriculum Standards and Accountability Framework and “Crossways” the Religious Education Framework for South Australian Catholic Schools. Theseframeworkssupportstudentsinlearningaboutthemselvesandtheirworld,andassistinthedevelopmentofliteracyandnumeracyoutcomesandtheabilitytoapplyinformationandcommunicationtechnologies.BothCollege’smiddleyearscurriculaleadintotheSouth Australian Certificate of Education (SACE),andencouragestudentstopursueexcellenceintheirstudies.

Toensuretheteachingandlearningineachoftheseareasisstructuredtomeettheneedsofthestudents,thecurriculumineachlearningareaiscoordinatedcloselyandbuiltonfromthemiddleyears.Thismakescertainthereisacohesivecurriculumacrossalllearningareas.Teachersconstructtheirindividualprogramstomeettheinclusiveneedsofthestudentsintheirspecificlearninggroup.

When students are making choices about areas of study, they are able to track their subject choice within each learning area through the Subject Flow Chart.

BothCollegesconductParentInformationNightsandStudentInformationSessionstoassiststudentsandtheirparentsintheimportantareasofcareerandsubjectchoice.Thesesessionsacknowledgethecrucialroleparentsplayintheeducationandformationoftheirchildren.

Studentsarecounselledindividuallytoensurethatthecoursechosenisthemostappropriatetotheircurrentandfutureneeds.Parents are encouraged to be part of these interviews.

PERSONALDEVELOPMENTPROGRAMAnintegralpartofStPaul’sCurriculumisthePersonalDevelopmentProgramfromYear10-12.

ThePersonalDevelopmentProgramreinforces,throughformalandinformalsessions,ourschoolphilosophyandenablesteachersandstudentstoengageinactivitiesthathelpcreatethetypeofenvironmentinwhichlearningispossible.Theformalprogramincludesthefollowingtopics:SocialSkillsDevelopment,ConflictResolution,CareerEducation,StudySkillsandProblemSolvingSkills.Therearealsointer-classactivities,classdiscussions,liturgicalandothercelebrations.Inthesenioryearsriskminimalisationanddriver'seducationarealsofocusareas.

Reportsalsoindicatewhetheraparentinterviewisrequiredtodiscusstheprogressofyourson.Parent/TeacherinterviewsareheldatthebeginningofTerm2,3and4forYear11studentsandatthebeginningofTerm2,3andattheendofTerm3forYear12students.

Vocational Education and Training (VET) is education and training that provides students skills and knowledge for work. VET operates through a national trainingsystem,andisdelivered,assessedandcertifiedbyRegisteredTrainingOrganisationseitherwithintheCollegeoratanexternaltrainingfacility.

TheSACEisdesignedtogivestudentsincreasedflexibility,includinggreateropportunitiestohavediverseformsoflearningandachievementrecognised.ThesedirectionsareinlinewiththeSACEBoardlegislationandStateandnationalpoliciesaimedatfacilitatingthetransitionofyoungpeoplefromschooltofurthereducation,trainingandemployment.

TherecognitionarrangementsforVETintheSACEwillenablestudentstoincludemorevocationaleducationandtraining(VET)intheirSACEstudies.TheserecognitionarrangementshelpstudentstobuildcoherentpathwaysintheSACEthroughVET,andencouragestudentstocomplete,ormakesignificantprogresstowardscompleting,VETqualificationswhilecompletingtheSACE.

Studentscangainrecognitionforupto180SACEcreditsatStage1and/orStage2forsuccessfullycompletedVET.

SACE CreditsStudentscangainSACEcreditsforthesuccessfulcompletionofVETqualificationsorunitsofcompetencythatmakeupaqualification.Astudentwillearn10SACEcreditsforthesuccessfulcompletionof70nominalhoursofVET,uptothemaximumnumberofcreditsallocatedtoeachqualification.Astudentwillearn5SACEcreditsforthesuccessfulcompletionof35nominalhoursofVET.TheVETRecognitionRegisterliststhemaximumandminimumnumberofSACEcreditsallocatedtoeachqualification.

RecognitionatSACEStage1and/orStage2AllVETqualificationsorunitsofcompetencythatmakeupaqualification,intheAustralianQualificationsFramework(AQF)cancontributetothecompletionrequirementsoftheSACE.TheSACEBoarddeterminestheSACEstageatwhichqualificationswillbegrantedrecognitionintheSACE.InmostcasesaCertificateIorIIVETqualification(i.e.alltheunitsofcompetencythatmakeupthequalification)willberecognisedatStage1level.UnitsofcompetencyfromCertificateIIIqualificationswillberecognisedatStage2level.Therearesomevariationstothisbutyourschool'sVETCoordinatorwillliasewithstudentsinregardstothis.

SAUniversitiesBonusSchemes-Changesfor2017entryThethreeSouthAustralianuniversities,FlindersUniversity,TheUniversityofAdelaideandtheUniversityofSouthAustralia,arereplacingallexistingequityandsubjectbonusschemeswithtwonewbonusschemes.ThenewschemeswillcomeintooperationforstudentsstudyingYear12in2015whoapplyforentrytostudiescommencinginthe2016universityacademicyear.ThetwonewschemesaretheSAUniversitiesEquitySchemeandtheSALanguage,LiteracyandMathematicsBonusScheme.ThenewschemeswillbeadministeredbySATACbasedonrulesprovidedbytheuniversities.

AnybonusesappliedbytheuniversitieswillcontinuetobeaddedtotheuniversityaggregatefromwhichSelectionRanksarecalculated(forSA/NTstudents,andusingacomplementarymethodologyforstudentsfromotherYear12systems).TheSAUniversitiesEquitySchemeawards5bonuspointsforeligiblestudents,andtheSALanguage,LiteracyandMathematicsBonusSchemeawards2or4pointsforeligiblestudents.Anindividualstudentcanreceiveamaximumof9bonuspointsunderbothschemes.Bothbonusschemesareavailabletostudents,AustralianandinternationalwhoarestudyingtheSACE,NTCET,InternationalBaccalaureate,orinterstateseniorsecondarycertificateinAustralia(i.e.notoffshore).

WhatistheSACE?TheSouthAustralianCertificateofEducation(SACE)isaqualificationawardedtostudentswhosuccessfullycompletetheirseniorsecondaryeducation(usuallyYears11and12).Thecertificateisbasedontwostagesofachievement:Stage1(normallyundertakeninYear11)andStage2(Year12).StudentswillbeabletostudyawiderangeofcoursesaspartoftheSACE.

What are some of the features of the SACE?

As part of the SACE students will:

WithintheResearchProjectstudentswill:

CollegeSpecificSACEInformationStPaul’sCollegeandKildareCollegeofferavarietyofsubjectstoenableourstudentstomeettherequirementsoftheSACE.TheSouthAustralianCertificateofEducation(SACE)existstoencouragestudentstosuccessfullycompletesecondaryeducationandtoattesttotheirreadinesforentryintopost-schoolstudiesandemployment.

TheSACEisaninternationallyrecognisedqualificationthatopenspathwaysleadingtovocationsandcareers,furtherstudiesandemployment.TheSACEalsoensures that students leave school with a strong general education.

♦ Tomeettherequirementsofthecertificate,studentsneedtotakeabalancedrangeofstudies,generallyovertwoyears,althoughnoparticulartimelimitisspecified.Stage1oftheSACEisusuallystudiedinYear11andStage2oftheSACEisusuallystudiedinYear12.Studentsmaynegotiatealterationstothisschedule.ThestudiesincludeEnglishorEnglishasaSecondLanguage,andMathematicsatStage1(Year11),aswellasaselectionfromothersubjectgroups.
