TheteachingandlearningprogramsatStPaul’sandKildareCollegeaimtoprovideforstudentseducationthatiswelldocumentedandappropriatetothedevelopmentalandindividuallearningneedsofeachstudent.Curriculumisdesignedwithanoutcomesbasedapproachandbuildsonlearningfromyeartoyear.
ThefoundationframeworksonwhichthetwoCollege’scurriculaarebasedarethe:Australian Curriculum, the South Australian Curriculum Standards and Accountability Framework and “Crossways” the Religious Education Framework for South Australian Catholic Schools. Theseframeworkssupportstudentsinlearningaboutthemselvesandtheirworld,andassistinthedevelopmentofliteracyandnumeracyoutcomesandtheabilitytoapplyinformationandcommunicationtechnologies.BothCollege’smiddleyearscurriculaleadintotheSouth Australian Certificate of Education (SACE),andencouragestudentstopursueexcellenceintheirstudies.
Toensuretheteachingandlearningineachoftheseareasisstructuredtomeettheneedsofthestudents,thecurriculumineachlearningareaiscoordinatedcloselyandbuiltonfromthemiddleyears.Thismakescertainthereisacohesivecurriculumacrossalllearningareas.Teachersconstructtheirindividualprogramstomeettheinclusiveneedsofthestudentsintheirspecificlearninggroup.
When students are making choices about areas of study, they are able to track their subject choice within each learning area through the Subject Flow Chart.
BothCollegesconductParentInformationNightsandStudentInformationSessionstoassiststudentsandtheirparentsintheimportantareasofcareerandsubjectchoice.Thesesessionsacknowledgethecrucialroleparentsplayintheeducationandformationoftheirchildren.
Studentsarecounselledindividuallytoensurethatthecoursechosenisthemostappropriatetotheircurrentandfutureneeds.Parents are encouraged to be part of these interviews.

PERSONALDEVELOPMENTPROGRAMAnintegralpartofStPaul’sCurriculumisthePersonalDevelopmentProgramfromYear10-12.
ThePersonalDevelopmentProgramreinforces,throughformalandinformalsessions,ourschoolphilosophyandenablesteachersandstudentstoengageinactivitiesthathelpcreatethetypeofenvironmentinwhichlearningispossible.Theformalprogramincludesthefollowingtopics:SocialSkillsDevelopment,ConflictResolution,CareerEducation,StudySkillsandProblemSolvingSkills.Therearealsointer-classactivities,classdiscussions,liturgicalandothercelebrations.Inthesenioryearsriskminimalisationanddriver'seducationarealsofocusareas.
AnimportantelementoftheprogramisthefactthatHomeClassteachersareassignedtoeachclassinthebeliefthatparent,studentandstaffinteractionandcommunicationarevitallinksintheteachingandlearningprocess.HomeClassGroupsareverticallygroupedwithinaHouseStructure.StudentsremainwithinthesameHousethroughouttheirseniorschooling.
INDEPENDENTEDUCATIONTheseprogramsprovidesupportdesignedtohelpstudentslearnmoreeffectively,benefitfromtheirschoolexperiencesandattaintheirSouthAustralianCertificateofEducation.Allcurriculumareasarecoveredandtheneedsofadiverserangeofstudentsarecateredfor.InIndependentEducationProgramsthediversityoftheschoolpopulationiscelebrated.
Recognitionisgiventoallmanneroflearningdifficulties,aswellasacknowledgementoftheneedsofgiftedandtalentedstudents.

Subjectreportsarewrittenanddistributedattheendofeachterm.Year11(Stage1)studentsreceive4reportsandStage2(Year12)studentsreceive3reports.Year11studentsreceivemid-semesterreportsinTerm1and3;thesecontainindividualsubjectcommentsandprogressivegradesforeachsubject.AttheendofSemester1and2,Year11studentswillreceivesemesterreports;thesecontainasubjectdescriptorandachievementgrade.Allyear12reportswillcontainindividualsubjectcommentsandprogressivegrades.
Reportsalsoindicatewhetheraparentinterviewisrequiredtodiscusstheprogressofyourson.Parent/TeacherinterviewsareheldatthebeginningofTerm2,3and4forYear11studentsandatthebeginningofTerm2,3andattheendofTerm3forYear12students.

PASTORALCAREPROGRAMAnintegralpartofKildare’scurriculumisthePastoralCareProgramfromYear10toYear12.Thisprogramreinforces,throughformalandinformalsessions,ourschoolphilosophyandenablesteachersandstudentstoengageinactivitieswhichwebelievehelpcreatethetypeofenvironmentinwhichlearningispossible.Theformalprogramincludesthefollowingtopics:SocialSkillsDevelopment,CareerEducation,StudySkillsandProblemSolvingSkills.Therearealsointer-classactivities,classdiscussionsandliturgicalandothercelebrations.
AnimportantelementoftheprogramisthefactthatPastoralCareteachersareassignedtoeachclassinthebeliefthatstudentandstaffinteractionandcommunicationarevitallinksintheteaching/learningprocessforallofus.PastoralCareGroupsareverticallygroupedwithinaHouseStructure.Studentsremainwithinthesamegroupfortheirentireschooling.

Recognitionisgiventoallmannerofdisabilities,learningdifficulties,EnglishasanAdditionalLanguage(EAL),aswellasacknowledgementoftheneedsofthegifted and talented students.
Educationalneedsvaryconsiderablyfromchildtochild.Asaresult,theIndividualLearningProgramsprovideflexibleandofteninnovativeprogrammingforstudentswithspecialneeds.Thisisdoneinanumberofways.ThereareProfessionalDevelopmentsessionsforstaff,sothattheyareabletodifferentiatethecurriculum.Classroomteachersaresupportedintheirprogrammingandlessonplanning,sothattheybettersuitindividualneeds.SupportisalsoprovidedforstudentswithintheclassroomandtheLearningCentre,includingexplicitteachingofidentifiedskillsoneononeorinsmallgroups.ArangeofFlexibleLearningsubjects in the SACE also cater for students with specific learning needs.
ASSESSMENTANDREPORTINGThisreferstotheon-goingnatureofassessmentinwhichassessmenttasksandtestsallcontributetoastudent’soverallachievement.Preparatory,orformativeworkassistsstudentsandstafftoassesslearningandsupportimprovement.
Thisisanessentialpartofthelearningprocessbecauseitdescribeshowyourchildinteractswithcurrentexperiencesandwhatsensesheismakingoftheminlightofherpreviousunderstandings.ThroughoutYears11and12studentassessmentis:

Vocational Education and Training (VET) is education and training that provides students skills and knowledge for work. VET operates through a national trainingsystem,andisdelivered,assessedandcertifiedbyRegisteredTrainingOrganisationseitherwithintheCollegeoratanexternaltrainingfacility.
TheSACEisdesignedtogivestudentsincreasedflexibility,includinggreateropportunitiestohavediverseformsoflearningandachievementrecognised.ThesedirectionsareinlinewiththeSACEBoardlegislationandStateandnationalpoliciesaimedatfacilitatingthetransitionofyoungpeoplefromschooltofurthereducation,trainingandemployment.
TherecognitionarrangementsforVETintheSACEwillenablestudentstoincludemorevocationaleducationandtraining(VET)intheirSACEstudies.TheserecognitionarrangementshelpstudentstobuildcoherentpathwaysintheSACEthroughVET,andencouragestudentstocomplete,ormakesignificantprogresstowardscompleting,VETqualificationswhilecompletingtheSACE.

♦ Leadtonationallyrecognisedqualifications

Studentscangainrecognitionforupto180SACEcreditsatStage1and/orStage2forsuccessfullycompletedVET.
SACE CreditsStudentscangainSACEcreditsforthesuccessfulcompletionofVETqualificationsorunitsofcompetencythatmakeupaqualification.Astudentwillearn10SACEcreditsforthesuccessfulcompletionof70nominalhoursofVET,uptothemaximumnumberofcreditsallocatedtoeachqualification.Astudentwillearn5SACEcreditsforthesuccessfulcompletionof35nominalhoursofVET.TheVETRecognitionRegisterliststhemaximumandminimumnumberofSACEcreditsallocatedtoeachqualification.
RecognitionatSACEStage1and/orStage2AllVETqualificationsorunitsofcompetencythatmakeupaqualification,intheAustralianQualificationsFramework(AQF)cancontributetothecompletionrequirementsoftheSACE.TheSACEBoarddeterminestheSACEstageatwhichqualificationswillbegrantedrecognitionintheSACE.InmostcasesaCertificateIorIIVETqualification(i.e.alltheunitsofcompetencythatmakeupthequalification)willberecognisedatStage1level.UnitsofcompetencyfromCertificateIIIqualificationswillberecognisedatStage2level.Therearesomevariationstothisbutyourschool'sVETCoordinatorwillliasewithstudentsinregardstothis.

CollegeSpecificSACEInformationStPaul’sCollegeandKildareCollegeofferavarietyofsubjectstoenableourstudentstomeettherequirementsoftheSACE.TheSouthAustralianCertificateofEducation(SACE)existstoencouragestudentstosuccessfullycompletesecondaryeducationandtoattesttotheirreadinesforentryintopost-schoolstudiesandemployment.
TheSACEisaninternationallyrecognisedqualificationthatopenspathwaysleadingtovocationsandcareers,furtherstudiesandemployment.TheSACEalsoensures that students leave school with a strong general education.
