Gaze out over pretty bays and charming little fishing villages as you travel along the shores of Lake Como. The classic Alpine tourEvery journey has a beginning and an end. But not on the Glacier Express. The beginning and end are simply the high-points in this case.Such is the uniqueness of St. Moritz, the elegant and exclusive cosmopolitan resort town set in the breathtaking mountain landscape of the Engadin. And Davos: Europe’s highest-al-titude town, set in a pristine Alpine landscape. Then there’s Zermatt, the traffic-free spa town at the foot of the world’s most photographed mountain: Matterhorn. But a ride on the Glacier Express is in fact a spectacle in its own right. It offers a panoramic journey through the Alps, including 291 bridges, 91 Tunnels and the crossing of the Oberalp Pass, at over 2,033 metres above sea level. This is why your seven-and-half-hour journey on the slowest express train in the world never really comes to an end. It remains in your memory forever.

Welcome aboard!

Arosa Line

The curvy oneRunning as leisurely as a city tram or streetcar, the Arosa-line train trundles through Chur, passing beside the town wall, the Maltese Tower and Upper Gate, which are the chief land-marks of the capital of Switzerland’s Graubünden region. But the rails quickly continue on into the calm of the surrounding country. The train operates as a mountain railway. The trains seem to float in the air over Schanfigg, as it rolls across the elegant arches of the Langwiesner Viaduct. In its final feat of strength, the train tackles – without the use of any rack mechanism – the steep section from St. Peter to the fun holi-day resort of the Graubünden. The train succeeds in climbing more than 1000 metres in just 26 kilometres – something that not even a mountain goat can manage!

Best view to the Matterhorn Visitors wishing to get to know the nicer side of the Alps will soon appreciate what makes Gornergrat special: it has no road access. With its sunny observation platform open all the year round, Gornergrat is a top excursion destination – and not just because of its high altitude. Surrounded by no fewer than twenty-nine Viertausender (mountains of at least four thou-sand metres in height), including the tallest peak in Switzer-land and the second-longest glacier in the Alps, this location offers spectacular panoramic views like no other, plus con-venient access to the Matterhorn Mountain Railway. This line, which is Europe’s highest-altitude, open-air rack railway, departs from the famous spa town of Zermatt in Switzerland’s Wallis region, from where it makes the 9,339-metre-long trip to Gornergrat. The ride takes you over impressive bridges and through deep cuttings and tunnels, and offers views of idyllic forests and Alpine meadows, inter-spersed with rocky gorges and mountain lakes. The majestic presence of the mighty Matterhorn looms in the background throughout the journey.

General terms and conditions of carriageapplying to express trains, special trains, special carriages, special offers and travel packages

These general terms and conditions of carriage (hereinafter "the terms and conditions") regulate the contractual relationship be-tween users of the Rhaetian railway company Rhätische Bahn AG (hereinafter "RhB") for travel arrangements or services supplied by RhB in its own name or via a third party or parties. Passengers can be either private individuals or legal entities, in the form of tour operators, which book travel on RhB or act as intermediar-ies on their own behalf or that of third parties. These terms and conditions have been drawn up in several languages, but only the German-language version shall be binding. In the case of services for which RhB acts as an intermediary, the terms and conditions of the organisation actually supplying the services shall apply, and the passenger shall have a direct con-tractual relationship with the organisation concerned. This con-dition applies in particular to, but shall not be limited to, all ser-vices that are paid for on a walk-on basis, including those where RhB offers a discount on the normal price or fare.

1. Legal effectThe contract between the passenger and RhB comes into effect with its acceptance, without reservation, by RhB. In the case of telephone bookings, the contract comes into effect with its oral confirmation on the part of RhB. Services booked over the In-ternet are confirmed with the corresponding payment. All ad-ditional individual instructions and conditions that might apply likewise form part of the contract, and come automatically into effect for the travel booked. These additional individual instruc-tions and conditions take precedence over the existing terms and conditions. Special requests and additional agreements only ap-ply if they have been expressly confirmed, in writing and without reservation, by RhB.

2. Group travelThe fare regulations of CH-direct shall apply to group travel un-dertaken on trains or relating to offers other than those detailed below. The person reserving travel shall be responsible for the payment of all services booked, for ensuring that all accompany-ing passengers fulfil the applicable conditions of carriage as de-tailed in these terms and conditions, and for ensuring that they follow all and any special instructions that might be issued by RhB or other suppliers of services.

3. Minimum numbersJourneys advertised as "RhB travel experiences" (steam-driven snowplough rides, trains drawn by steam locomotive, etc.) are subject to there being a minimum number of passengers. If there is not a sufficient number of passengers, RhB reserves the right, up to 14 days before the date of travel and without being liable for loss or damage, to cancel or amend the programme of travel. The passenger is then free to accept the new itinerary or with-draw (at no cost) from the contract.

4. Travel to point of departureIf the package does not include travel to the point of departure, passengers are responsible for ensuring that they arrive promptly.

No refunds can be made in the event of lateness caused by traffic conditions, blocked roads, delays by private or public transport, delayed arrival, weather conditions etc.

5. Fares and prices – conditions of paymentThe services supplied on express trains, special trains, special carriages and as part of special offers or travel packages are as shown in the corresponding brochures and on tickets. An ad-ministration and postage charge of CHF 10.00 (Switzerland) or CHF 20.00 (elsewhere) shall apply to packages and general ser-vices (for the despatch of seat reservations, tickets, etc.). Servic-es are normally payable in advance by invoice, credit card or in cash. Other means of payment are possible only subject to special agreement. The person reserving travel shall be responsible for the payment of all services booked. All fares and prices include value added tax (VAT). If the terms of payment are not observed, RhB may refuse to supply the services booked, withdraw from the contract and/or charge for the costs of cancellation.

5.1 Costs of cancellation The passenger must notify RhB immediately, and return the trav-el documentation as applicable, if there is any change to the itinerary and/or number of participants, or in the event of can-cellation. If definitively-booked services are not partially or fully cancelled in good time (defined for the purpose of calculating cancellation costs by the date of receipt on the premises of RhB), the cancellation costs detailed below will be charged. The date of cancellation and/or change shall be defined as the date of re-ceipt of written notification on the premises of RhB (or the fol-lowing working day, in the case of arrival on a Saturday, Sunday or public holiday).

If travel is interrupted, a refund will be made for all services not yet supplied, other than services charged to RhB by outside service suppliers. The right is expressly reserved to charge for additional costs arising from interruption of travel. Travel packages are subject to article 13.

6. Claims / complaintsIf travel does not conform to the contractual arrangements, or if a passenger suffers loss, damage or injury of any kind, the near-est member of RhB staff should be notified immediately and as-sistance requested. The passenger should obtain corresponding written confirmation from the member of RhB staff concerned. This is vital for the subsequent processing of any official com-plaint. Local members of staff are not authorised to adopt any position on behalf of RhB regarding claims or complaints. All claims for partial refund and/or loss or damage, etc. must be made in writing within 14 days in accordance with the contrac-tual travel or package, accompanied by the corresponding writ-ten confirmation made by the local member of RhB staff and any other applicable evidence, and submitted to the Rhaetian Rail-way at the following address: Rhätische Bahn AG, Bahnhofstrasse 25, 7002 Chur, Switzerland. If the loss or damage is not con-firmed in writing by a local member of RhB staff, or not submit-ted to RhB within 14 days of the end of the journey concerned, the passenger shall lose all further right of redress.

7. Travel documentationPassengers are responsible for ensuring their own correct obser-vance of passport and visa regulations. This applies in particu-lar to travel outside Switzerland (e.g. to Tirano or Landeck). The conditions covering cancellation costs shall apply if the required travel documentation (passport, visa, etc.) is delayed or not is-sued and travel must be cancelled or delayed as a result.

8. Insurance coverageTravel packages do not include insurance coverage. Passengers are recommended to take out baggage, accident and cancella-tion insurance.

9. Liability
