PRESIDENT’SFOREWORD

03

For those who attended the 2017

YFCU AGM & Conference in April,

I’m sure you will all agree what a

fantastic weekend it was. A special

word of thanks must go to the

Armagh City Hotel and also to

our Headquarters staff in making

everything run so smoothly.

On the Presidential team we

welcome a lot of new faces, Zita

Blair (Moneymore YFC) elected as

Deputy President and David Oliver

(Dungiven YFC), Harry Crosby (Spa

YFC), Peter Alexander (Glarryford

YFC) and William Beattie (Finvoy

YFC) all elected as Vice Presidents.

I congratulate them all in their new

roles, a dedicated team that will offer

the YFCU so much.

I must pay tribute to my predecessor

Miss Roberta Simmons for her time

as President. Roberta has been an

excellent example to the entire YFCU

membership and a fantastic role

model for all members. We must also

pay tribute to Brooks Allen in his time

as Vice President. Brooks has and will

remain to have young farmers in his

blood; he has been a great servant

for this organisation in his central role.

As you all know I have set my theme

for the incoming year as ‘Members

Success’. With this theme I am

encouraging all members to evaluate

and look at their practices of being an

YFCU member.

This involves grabbing every

opportunity that YFCU has to offer,

I want members success recognised

and rewarded for their participation

as an YFCU member. Everything

from holding an office bearer post

in your club or county to competing

in a competition to gaining new

skills and training. As a member led

organisation I am continually aware

that our dedicated members

achieve so much through their

involvement, I want each member

to be proud to achieve success

within their time as an YFCU

member.

As we enter the summer months

I hope all clubs and committee

members will be visible at your local

agricultural shows, spreading the

YFCU message wide and far. This is

also important within your clubs as

you start to plan ahead for the new

club year starting in September.

As President I am keen to take on

board every member’s views, I want

to continue to hear your thoughts

and feedback, so together we can

move our organisation forward, so

please don’t hesitate to contact me

at any stage.

James Speers

As your new President, I am delighted to write my first foreword for Rural Dispatch. I am extremely humbled and honoured that the YFCU membership has bestowed me to represent and lead this 88 year old organisation. I look forward to serving the entire membership across Northern Ireland as your President while working as a team to build a stronger voice for rural young people. I thank all the members for allowing me this amazing opportunity and I hope I shall live up to your expectations.

The recent Balmoral Show offered award-winning charity the Farm Safety Foundation an opportunity to announce their continued sponsorship of the Young Farmers Clubs of Ulster. Newly elected President James Speers joined the Foundation’s Chair of Trustees Gina Fusco on the opening day of the show to announce the ongoing partnership.

The charity, which was set up in 2014 by rural insurers NFU Mutual, aims to raise awareness of farm safety among young farmers, by educating and promoting safer ways to farm in the hope of challenging and changing the risk taking behaviour that gives agriculture the industry the poorest safety record of any occupation in the UK.

Speaking at the Show, where the charity shared a stand with YFCU, Stephanie Berkeley commented: “We are delighted to continue our support of YFCU. By giving YFCU members access to information and practical resources we

Seán Keogh from the Health and Safety Executive for Northern Ireland shares some advice on keeping safe when working with round bales.

SEÁN’S SAFETY TIPS

Over the years the use of round bales has become a common practice on many farms in Northern Ireland, whether for hay, straw or silage. Round bales carry a very real risk and over the last 10 years 4 fatal accidents have been the result of bales falling on someone or someone falling off a stack of bales.

Storage• Round bales should be stacked in a pyramid

shape on their curved side.• Outside bales on the bottom row should be

supported to stop them moving, e.g. chocks.• The maximum height of the bales should be 3

bales. If the bales are of a less dense material it should only be 2 bales high.

When deciding where to store the bales you should use a site that is:• Uncluttered.• Near to where you are going to use them.• Firm, level, smooth and if possible well drained

ground. • Away from overhead power lines.

If your tractor contacts the overhead electricity wires phone Northern Ireland Electricity Networks, on 03457 643 643.

TransportationMoving round bales from the field to the farmyard must be done safely.

• Bale handling equipment, tractors, telehandlers and trailers must be well maintained and in good condition.

• Tractors used to move bales should have a safety cab to provide falling object protection.

• The driver should be trained and experienced to safely operate the machinery and take into account potential dangers, e.g. slopes, overhead powerlines, securing the load safely.

• When moving bales keep the bale as low as possible, avoid sudden movements and travel at a speed appropriate to suit the terrain.

• Trailers should not be overloaded. Bales should be securely loaded with suitable straps and not overhang the edges of the trainer.

• Take care when releasing the straps used to secure the load as the bales may have moved during transportation.

To find out more about farm safety, including the ongoing ‘Stop and Think SAFE’ campaign, please contact the HSENI helpline on: 0800 0320 121 or visit: www.hseni.gov.uk/farmsafe

hope to continue increasing the knowledge of safer

working practices to the farmers of the future and

reduce the risk-taking behaviours that are currently

so rife in the industry. Farming and food production

play a crucial role in the life and economy of

Northern Ireland - it is the bedrock of our food

and drink industry. More than ever, we should be

looking after our farmers and keeping them safe.

We need to understand why they are still taking

risks so farm safety is a topic that needs to appear

at the top of any agricultural agenda. We are

grateful that James Speers and the energetic and

committed team at YFCU support our messages

and ask members ‘Who Would Fill Your Boots?’ if

they were to suffer a life changing accident at work.

Once again, this has been a year of tragedies in the

industry but we know that working in partnership

with YFCU, along with the support of the NI Farm

Safety Partnership we can make a difference and

bring about a change in behaviour.”

The European Rally will be held in Latvia from 6th - 13th August 2017 and the theme for this year is ‘AIR’ which stands for Active, Inspired and Rural. The rally is organised by Rural Youth Europe which functions as an umbrella for youth organisations working to promote and activate young people in the countryside and will celebrate its 60th anniversary this year.

During the launch Robert McCullough, Head of Agri-Business at Danske Bank congratulated the YFCU members who

The Young Farmers’ Club of Ulster (YFCU) is pleased to announce the continued support of the UFU in its Exchange Programme. This year two YFCU members will be supported by a bursary and part of the sponsorship package involves them reporting back on a subject with an agricultural theme.

Recipients of the bursaries are Christina McCollam from Lylehill YFC who will travel to Canada and Kaitlyn Martin from Ballywalter YFC who will travel to Kansas to both stay with host families throughout their exchange.

The Exchange Programme has been offered through YFCU for over 60 years and forms many international lifetime friendships.

were successful in gaining a place on the European Rally team. On behalf of Danske Bank he wished Jonathan, David, Melanie, Danielle and James well and commented that they would be excellent ambassadors for their clubs, the Association and Northern Ireland.

The launch was also attended by other Danske Bank representatives including Seamus McCormick, Senior Agri-Business Manager, North, Danske Bank and Carol McMullan, Agri-Business Manager, North, Danske Bank.

Robert McCullough from Danske Bank said; “We have been proud to support the YFCU European Rally team for almost 40 years giving over 150 members the opportunity to participate in this important annual event. We are delighted, as a Platinum Sponsor of the YFCU, to again support the European Rally which will be held in Latvia this year

Members compete for places, are interviewed by a panel and receive intensive training before heading off to their foreign destinations.

Ulster Farmers’ Union CEO Wesley Aston said, “Sponsoring the YFCU Exchange programme is a way for the UFU to support the next generation of farmers. We are helping young people to learn more about agricultural practices and cultures in other parts of the world. The experience and ideas gained from these travels will benefit the industry here at home.”

Young Farmers’ Clubs of Ulster CEO Michael Reid added, “We are grateful to have UFU on board to support this key area

allowing the Association to showcase all that is good about YFCU and NI rural youth. I have no doubt that the team members will enjoy and benefit from this cultural, educational and sporting exchange with lasting friendships made across all of the participating European rural youth groups.”

YFCU Deputy President James Speers thanked Danske Bank and commented, “We are indebted to Danske Bank for their continued support and commitment to YFCU as one of our key Platinum sponsors. With their kind generosity we are able to be represented at the European Rally this year in Latvia. The rally will give the team the opportunity to share best practice, attend workshops and learn more about the other young farmer clubs that are attending from across Europe.”

The YFCU would like to extend a note of thanks to Danske Bank for the bank’s ongoing support of the Association.

of the Association. This partnership allows the UFU to gain from the expertise Christina and Kaitlyn will encounter in their travels abroad. We wish our members well as they plan for their trip and trust they get as much out of the experience as previous members have found.”

DANSKE Bank announced their continued support of the Young Farmers’ Clubs of Ulster (YFCU) European Rally team at the launch which was held in April outside the iconic Titanic Building in Belfast.

The group kicked off its first meeting by hearing about the success of a similar forum run by the NFU Cymru. “This format has proven successful in other UK regions and we want to replicate it here. The focus of the forum will be driven by its members but we expect there will be a mixture of

both business and practical sessions. The group complements our existing policy committee structure and will help to shape the UFU for future generations,” said Mr Bell.

Our aim is to help develop their leadership, communication and business skills while encouraging them to become more involved in the Union’s activities.”

How did you enjoy Balmoral Show?Having been at Balmoral Show before as a member of the public, it was a great opportunity at the beginning of my new role to be involved and see how it all works behind the scenes. I really enjoyed the opportunity to meet so many of our members, put faces to names and start building new relationships. As an organisation, YFCU set objectives of attending Balmoral Show, including an opportunity to showcase the organisation, hold successful competition finals and engage with the public and attract new members. I loved seeing so many members getting involved, through volunteering at the stand, demonstrating their skills and competitive edge at our competitions and cheering on their club at the finals! We are now approaching the start of a new club year, what will you be focusing on to encourage the President’s Theme of ‘Members Success’?I can’t wait to get started with the new competitions and will be focusing on encouraging clubs to join us in seeing the full potential of James’ theme ‘Members Success’. I will be encouraging clubs to help the theme reach its full potential by:

• Encouraging new entries and increased numbers to each competition within your club and county

• Encouraging members to try something new, developing skills and confidence

• Encouraging members to ask HQ and other clubs for advice if they are unsure about what a competition involves – we are all one big community who need to work together, to increase numbers and see YFCU at the best it can be!

As well as competitions, there will also be a big focus on training activities available for clubs to include in their programmes; ranging from mental health and drugs and alcohol, to road and farm safety. These are extremely important to ensure members are exposed to all training available, but also vital for us to reach any targets set by DAERA and the Education Authority. These programmes are a club opportunity not to be missed, with some on a first come, first served basis!

We speak to the new YFCU Events Manager Gillian McKeown about her new role and what

she is most looking forward to as part

of the biggest rural youth organisation in

Northern Ireland.

How are you settling in to your new job as our Events Manager? What have been your favourite parts of the job so far?I feel that I have been very lucky to start at such a busy time of the YFCU year, as I definitely prefer to hit the ground running. Getting to see the AGM, Balmoral Show and snippets of the drama and football, has given me a great opportunity to meet so many members and get an understanding of the YFCU competitions.

Everyone at HQ and all the members have been extremely welcoming and I can’t wait for what is to come in my role as Events Manager!

Tell us about what you were doing before YFCU?After completing my BA Hons degree in Marketing and Management, I have been working in the Events and Fundraising industry for over 11 years, including the Corporate, Hospitality and Weddings and Charity sectors. Most recently, I was the Corporate Fundraising Manager for Action Cancer, responsible for all events, sponsorships, partnerships and corporate fundraising.

What do you hope to bring to the organisation?I am looking forward to using my skills and expertise to help YFCU increase efficiency and competition participation numbers, which in turn, will hopefully encourage even more members to join such a great organisation.

What events are you most excited for? I can’t wait to see all of the competitions and events that YFCU has to offer. I am looking forward to getting to see events that are completely different to what I have worked on before, including the agricultural competitions and Arts Gala. It is great to be part of an organisation that offers so many opportunities and experiences for young people across Northern Ireland.

What do you enjoy outside of work? Having recently got married in April, I am looking forward to starting work on our house, as I love DIY, crafts and a bit of gardening! I enjoy travelling, going to the gym (when I find the motivation) and love getting outside for long walks and exploring new places when I get a chance with my adorable pet dog, Ralph! Show him a tennis ball and he is your friend for life!

Kyle, tell us a bit about yourself and your interest in agriculture. I live in Lack in Co Fermanagh on our family farm where we have 120 ewes and 40 suckler cows. We are mainly focused on breeding and rearing, with a lot of our time spent on animal nutrition and welfare as well as land management.

Like a lot of young farmers, I got involved in farming at an early age – as soon as I was fit to be outside really! While helping feed and move animals, I watched as my father and grandfather before him, did what I considered to be the more exciting jobs of bringing in silage and working with machinery. Now however I have a very hands-on role in managing the farm. Outside of the farming life, I enjoy clay pigeon shooting – well trying to hit the clay anyway!

You joined CAFRE as a student at a young age, what do you enjoy most about studying there? I left school after my GCSEs to gain a more in-depth knowledge of agriculture and farming practices. I decided to do a three year Extended Diploma in Agriculture which aims to provide students with a good grounding in the agri-food sector. It included modules covering a wide spectrum of issues from agricultural environments and animal health to beef, sheep and dairy production as well as livestock husbandry. What I enjoyed most about the course was its focus on gaining real-world experience outside of the classroom. As part of the programme, I had a yearlong placement on a large sheep farm in Banbridge which provided me with invaluable insight on to how to manage lambing and land.

Farmer Focus!

I am due to complete CAFRE’s two year Foundation Degree in Agriculture and Rural Studies shortly and I am currently out on placement again before graduating this summer. While this course also includes practical work, the degree programme aims to deepen and hone your knowledge of the sector and in particular teaches you what is involved in the business of actually running a farm. Like most of my classmates, I come from a farming background and felt I had a good understanding of animals and agriculture but I wasn’t as strong on the economic and business side. For me, the business and farm management element of the degree programme has been hugely beneficial.

Tell us more about your Farm Business Management Plan and taking part in the competition. While many students devised a plan that would change the focus of their farm or expand their operations, my farm business management plan looked at our current business model and considered how to make it more efficient and effective. In particular, I looked at how to improve our calving intervals and synchronize breeding times as well as re-seeding with a view to taking more from grass.

With feedback and advice from my tutors and the First Trust Bank judges, I was able to refine my business plan and, at home on the farm, we have started putting many of the recommendations into action and plan to do more over the coming year.

What are your plans for the future? I am lucky enough to have been offered a job with my placement company, Genus AI. They are a world leading provider of bovine genetics and reproduction services and use cutting edge technology to maximise the potential of beef and dairy farms. As with my course, I enjoy working outside and being hands-on, so Genus AI is a good fit as it is a farm based role where I help heat detect cows. While farming and agriculture is often thought of a traditional industry based on heritage and skills, it is also a very innovative sector so I am pleased to be working for a company that is utilising technology to help farmers grow their business.

Kyle Weir, a 21 year old Fermanagh farmer, recently placed in the top 3 of First Trust Bank’s prestigious Farm Business Management Competition. He talks to Rural Dispatch about his time studying at CAFRE, taking part in the competition and what it’s like to be a young farmer. While farming and

agriculture is often thought of a traditional industry based on heritage and skills, it is also a very innovative sector.

The degree programme aims to deepen and hone your knowledge of the sector and in particular teaches you what is involved in the business of actually running a farm.

Over 300 young farmers attended the Young Farmers’ Clubs of Ulster Association’s AGM and Conference, sponsored by Massey Ferguson, one of the world’s leading tractor brands. The event was held at Armagh City Hotel in April.

The YFCU put together an informative morning programme for members as well as delegates from sister organisations Macra na Feirme, the Scottish Association of Young Farmers’ Clubs and Welsh Young Farmers to take part in.

Before embarking on the day’s proceedings, members had an energising workout provided by Armagh City Hotel staff. Outgoing President Roberta Simmons then welcomed members to the conference.

Ulster Wildlife’s Grassroots Challenge delivered one of the two workshops at the morning session of the YFCU AGM & Conference. The project officers Shona and Andrew gave an overview of the project and how to get involved with either a Club Night Challenge or a Wild Idea Project. They had some bird themed ice breakers and they brought along a long eared owl called Otis. The second workshop was provided by Alison Armstrong from Ascert who delivered an informative drug and alcohol awareness talk to the members.

During the AGM in the afternoon, the presidential team for 2017/18 was announced. James Speers, (Collone YFC) was elected into the position of President of the Association and Zita Blair,

(Moneymore YFC) was elected to the position of Deputy President.

The positions of Vice President went to re-elected members Harry Crosby, (Spa YFC) and David Oliver, (Dungiven YFC) while Peter Alexander (Glarryford YFC) and William Beattie (Finvoy YFC) were elected for the first time as Vice Presidents. Brooks Allen (Collone YFC) stepped down as Vice President after two years in the role and President James Speers thanked Brooks for all his hard work and wished him well in the future.

James also paid tribute to outgoing President Roberta Simmons. James commented, “Throughout the past two years Roberta has led the organisation from strength to strength. Her endless commitment and hard work to the organisation has been recognised by the members and appreciated by the wider Agri Industry in NI.”

During the AGM, the new President also announced that his theme for the coming year will be entitled ‘Members Success’. James commented, “I strongly believe that everyone deserves recognition for any small part they play in promoting the success of the YFCU through their club, their community or themselves as an individual. County Tyrone members Adam Wilson from Cappagh YFC and Henry Giles from Seskinore YFC, were celebrating at this year’s Balmoral Show after winning the YFCU machinery handling competition.

The competition, held in association with long term sponsor Johnston Gilpin & Co, saw a large crowd of spectators at the Cattle Lawn, where they cheered on the teams.

Johnston Gilpin & Co have supported the YFCU machinery handling competition for many years and provide the machinery for the young farmers to use during the event. Working closely with the Health and Safety Executive Northern Ireland (HSENI), Johnston Gilpin & Co assist with the planning of the designated course to test the competitors’ tractor skills and safety knowledge.

Two members from clubs in each of the six counties, selected from county heats, made up the teams and the team who

completed the course with the most points won the competition. Second place was awarded to County Down which included members Sam Graham from Killinchy YFC and Simon Agnew from Rathfriland YFC.

Points were awarded for successfully making it through the course and driving through the posts, however teams were penalised for a variety of reasons including if they did not comply with safety regulations, touching markers and unnecessary damage to the ground. This competition was designed to test both the drivers’ tractor skills and safety knowledge.

YFCU would like to thank Johnston Gilpin & Co for their continued sponsorship and support of this event. The Association also extend their gratitude to Sean Keogh & Paul Kelly from HSENI. YFCU would also like to thank Stuart Orr and Keith Dixon from Spa YFC who helped design the course.

The YFCU’s popular girls’ five-a-side junior and senior football final took place at Balmoral Show.

Senior teams and junior teams enthusiastically took to the cattle rings to battle it out for a place in the final. Both junior and senior teams played in their own league with each team playing each other. At the end of each league, the top two teams from the junior and senior tournaments played against each other.

In the junior competition, Dungiven YFC and Spa YFC played against each other in the final. Spa YFC then triumphed to take home the junior title.

Randalstown YFC and Gleno Valley YFC finished top in the senior tournament and played against each other in the final. Following a tense match, Gleno Valley YFC defended their title coming in first place with Randalstown YFC being awarded second place. The Fair Play Award was presented to Moycraig YFC.

The YFCU would like to extend a note of thanks to all the stewards for their help in coordinating and refereeing the matches.

The end of April saw club members perform their One Act Drama of ‘The Church Meeting’. After a few busy months of practising, all their hard work paid off and the club put on a fantastic performance. Despite the end of the winter programme, the summer season will be as busy as ever with upcoming events including the club’s annual BBQ on 1st July. For more details check out the club Facebook page.

AHOGHILL YFC

The new theme for the YFCU year was recently announced as ‘Members Success’ and the club have had a lot of this recently in Ahoghill YFC. In March at the County Antrim AGM, PRO Kathryn Speers was awarded 3rd in the County and this was a great success! Treasurer Jonathan Bristow also had recent success as he was placed third in the Ulster Young Farmer Competition in the grass section. These awards have been a great start to the summer months.

For the incoming year the club have decided to raise money for CRS Portglenone which is a community rescue service team in Portglenone that works along the river saving lives. Ahoghill YFC believe that this is a worthwhile charity and is also so close to home. To help raise money, five of the club’s girls took part in a relay team in the Belfast marathon in May. Well done to the girls for all their hard work and training they put in.

As the sports nights begin to start up again the club have been attending and gaining more members success. At the first sports night in May the boys made it to the semi-final and the club’s girls won. As well as this at Holestone’s sports night the junior boys also won. The club look forward to the rest of the summer activities and hope they can continue with their members success.

CURRAGH YFC

On the 15th March 2017 members from Curragh YFC visited George McKee’s factory based in Maghera. The meat products produced on site are consumed on a daily basis by people in the local community and those further afield. It was an extremely enjoyable experience from beginning to end with members both young and old gaining additional information on factory processes, essential hygiene regulations that must be adhered to and even being shown the different cuts of meat that are found on a carcass. The club wish to thank George for taking the time out of his hectic schedule to arrange this fantastic and informative tour. No doubt there will be club members perhaps seeking a summer job or even full time employment in this well established, reputable and incredibly busy company.

Tell us about your day job, is it related to farming?I am now a full time farmer at my home farm with my Dad and I have just finished my last year of four at Greenmount. We run a beef finishing and a breeding ewe farm in Islandmagee. We work where we buy heifers and bullocks a few days a week, every week and take them from the store stage to the finished beef animal and then sell them directly to the meat plant. We also keep between 250-300 breeding ewes where we lamb from February to April and then finish all the lambs ourselves and sell the directly to slaughter. From the late spring time onwards I also contract shear sheep for other farmers all over the county with myself and a friend. I also went over to shear in Scotland for a spell last year and worked for fellow Scottish young farmers shearing sheep.

Tell us about your big win for sheep shearing at Balmoral Show this year? This year at Balmoral Show I won the International Junior Shearing title for the first time with it being only my second time entering that particular competition. In 2015 and 2016 I won the YFCU Novice Sheep Shearing Competition and also made the final at the Royal Highland Show last year which was my first time competing there. In 2016 I also became the UK Under 21 Shepard of the Year at the finals in Birmingham.

When did you first start shearing sheep?I first started to shear at aged 17 at the YFCU shearing course that is held each year. From never even holding a hand piece before this to actually winning competitions has took a lot of practice and a lot of determination as it’s not just the easiest technique to pick up. There is no better feeling than standing up on a stage and your name being called out as the winner because it shows you that all the practice has paid off.

What are your aspirations for your future in YFCU? Is there anything that you would like to achieve?I would love to be able to progress up through my club. I am currently Assistant Treasure but would love to be able to be Leader one day. I also would like to be able to move on to County level where you can have a say in organising a lot of these fantastic events and competitions. I would also love to be able to take part in an international exchange. I have hosted people before when they have visited Northern Ireland but I’d love to get the chance to go travelling around the world off the back of YFCU.

What is your favourite part of being a young farmer? What benefits do you think that the organisation brings to young rural people? My favourite bit about being a young farmer is the whole social side of it. There is no better way to get to know people from all over Ulster or even the world than the YFCU organisation. I can say I know people from every County and nearly someone from every club. Through the YFCU we have participated in exchanges with a young farmers club in Scotland called Biggar and I have made lifelong friends. Since that exchange three years ago, we have been back and forward many times staying with each other many times a year. None of that would have happened if it wasn’t for the YFCU.

How would you describe the organisation to someone who know nothing about YFCU?YFCU is the best youth organisation in the world. It teaches you so many life skills that you will never forget. It is an organisation for young rural people and they don’t necessarily have to be from a farming background as anyone is welcome to join. It is run in every County where there are individual clubs that are full of young people. The YFCU run a lot of competitions from Stock Judging to Public Speaking and Group Debating and there is nearly a completion to suit everyone depending on your interests. I would highly recommend joining your nearest club as it aims to make you ‘Better Farmers, Better Countrymen, Better Citizens’.

Tell us a little about your involvement within the YFCU?I am an active member of Gleno Valley YFC which is just outside Larne in County Antrim. Gleno Valley have quite a lot of members that participate in various activities and the sports competitions stand out as our strong point. We have won numerous sports nights playing football with the under and over 18 boys teams and the girls teams. We only last year won the title of super club where we were crowned champions after the final competition. I joined the club at the age of 12 so have been a member for the last 8 years and have hardly missed a meeting since. I joined the young farmers club with a few friends at the time and was greatly encouraged to do so by my parents as they were both past members of the organisation. I myself actually live in Islandmagee where my dad was a member of Islandmagee YFC but unfortunately it had folded long before my time so I opted to join Gleno Valley as it was my closest club and where my mum was a past member of.

What are your favourite events to take part in?I love taking part in a lot of the YFC events from sports nights to group debating. But my favourite competitions are those that involve livestock e.g. beef and sheep judging or the shearing competition at Balmoral Show.
