Grand Knight Report

Knights KnewsKnights KnewsKnights KnewsKnights Knews Dec. 2017

My Brothers of Council 5803,

The 5803 Fish Fry has become a valuable community service and a

bargain by any standard. We had an amazing turnout this month. For

a change, there was plenty of help with both setup and cleanup. For

those of you who have yet partake, I strongly urge you to come out

and experience great food prepared to perfection by folks who take

great pride in their craft. If cooking is your thing, we can always use a

hand!!

On Tuesday the 28th we honored our dearly departed brothers at the

annual Memorial Mass. Our Celebrant, Fr. Joseph Shea delivered a

wonderful homily that touched on unique element of our Catholic faith.

A very special thanks our brother PGK Al Mc Kinley who helped coor-

dinate the event from the hospital bed. And thanks to our Spiritual

Adviser, Dn. Terence Reibenspies, Herman Conant, George Gnesda and his wife Janice, Cliff

Wirtz, Mariano Robles, Paul Burke, Madoline Wirtz, John MacKenzie and his wife Remy, Normand

Ouellette, Mike Palacios and Robert Smith. Please forgive me if I've missed anyone.

This year’s thanksgiving dinner was fantastic to say the very least. As always, Bob Joyce and Big

John Linscott came in at the crack of dawn to get things started. By midday, the aroma of turkey

filled the neighborhood while a dozen or more brother knights carved the birds and prepared the

side dishes. A good time was had by all. A special thanks to all who took birds home to prepare

and those who helped out in the kitchen.

Most all of you are familiar with the PADS program, where we open the hall to the homeless and

provide them with a hot meal and a comfortable place to sleep for the night. The other evening I

spend the night in support of this noteworthy charity. As I watched my brothers tend to the needs of

the homeless, it struck me how incredibly fortunate I am to be living in greatest Country on earth

and how blessed we all are to belong to an organization that puts The Word of God first and fore-

most. With that said, I want to thank each and every one for your hard work, tenacity and never-

ending devotion to those less fortunate. You are the real heroes of this world, and I am so proud to

have you as my brothers.

In Gods Image

Our image of God is so deeply ingrained in us, but it is easy for life and the world to corrupt that image. A distorted view of God tends to distort our relationships, which are the foundation of life in this world.

When Jesus invites us to call God Father - like in Our Father who art in heaven - He is inviting us to a very intimate relationship with God, and telling us that the transcendent God of the universe is concerned with the needs of each and everyone of us - give us this day our daily bread.

Jesus is constantly presenting a beautiful image of God our Father. It is only in the context of this true image, that we can fully embrace these words - Thy will be done. Those four words present the greatest challenge of Christianity. We live in a culture that says the meaning of life is to get what we want, and that when we do, we will be happy. We yearn for happiness because we were created for it, so we fall for this disception.

When did you last ask God to advise you about a big or even a little decision in your life:

Every decision we make leads us either toward the peace and happiness we yearn for or away from it.

God invites us into a deep life of prayer so that He can fill us with a peace that nobody can take from us. Invite God into the center of your decision-making process. Seek His will in all things - Thy will be done.

Pray the words Jesus taught us with sincerity and thoughtfulness. Pray in your own words.

Pray as St. Paul tells us, “constantly”.

Vivat Jesu!

Scrooge Didn’t Believe We can all remember the story of Scrooge and his failure to

believe in the spirit of Christmas. To all but the Scrooges of

the world, the celebration of the birth of Christ brings with it

a warm feeling of family ties, a joy and pleasure that our

faith brings to others.

That same warm feeling comes from owning life insurance.

Just knowing that, because of what you have planned, your

loved ones will have joys and comforts for years to come if

something should happen to you.

I don’t think Scrooge would have believed in life insurance either, but men of good

will do. And the world is a better place because of them. Through life insurance, they

know that comfort and security will not

be for only one day, but instead, a gift

that will provide for their loved ones for

years to come.

This Christmas, give a gift of security

and protection. I hope to hear from you.

Happy and Holy Holidays to all of you,

Willie Romero FICF

Thanksgiving Day Homeless Lunch

Thank you so much to the Brother Knights and their Ladies who gave up part of their Thanksgiving

and came to the hall to provide a delicious hot meal to those in our community who are less fortu-

nate than us.

Rick Ostrich, Tony Bonomo and their crew cooked up a lunch of salad, eggplant parmesan, Italian

sausage, turkey, pasta and of course, dessert.

We started serving at noon and we finished around 2:00 PM. We served about 60 people.

Simi Valley Invited To Parcipate In Toy Drive

The Knights of Columbus, Simi Valley Council #5803 and Mother Teresa Chris an Service Program

are asking the community to join in the Knights of Columbus Annual Toy Drive to help make sure

every child in Simi Valley has at least one toy for Christmas. Previous years efforts have yielded

enough dona ons to touch the lives of over 500 children and their families. In addi on to the drive

almost 150 families will receive boxes of food that include either a complete ham or turkey dinner

with all the trimmings for their holiday. Our 2017 goal is 1200 toys for the children (ages infant to

16) in this, our major holiday project. In December, the presents collected will be given to the par-

ents of the children, giving them an opportunity to provide their children with something for Christ-

mas. At the same me, children will be treated to a Christmas party complete with a visit from San-

ta, plus games and refreshments, courtesy of the Knights of Columbus, Council #5803, who have

been serving Simi Valley for over 52 years.

The Mother Teresa Chris an Service program at St. Rose of Lima began in the early 1970’s at a me

when Simi Valley was experiencing a building boom. As new houses and businesses appeared, so too

did the urban poor whose income could not keep up with the growing economy. The parish re-

sponded by providing food and clothing where needed and throughout the years has expanded to

include regular dinners for the poor and homeless, a bereavement program, services to the home-

bound, shelter, transporta on, counseling and referrals. The community outreach program is sup-

ported by the parishioners of St. Rose of Lima Church, the Knights of Columbus, The Simi Valley

Dream Cuisine, Serving Those In Need, Inc., Saint Rose of Lima Bingo, as well as through private do-

na ons. Mother Teresa Chris an Services Program is a non-denomina onal organiza on that pro-

vides weekly food bags, clothing and assistance to hundreds of Simi Valley residents.

The Knights of Columbus is the world¹s largest Catholic

family fraternal service organiza on with 1.9 million

members. The Knights charitable ac vi es encompass

an almost infinite variety of local, na onal and interna-

onal projects. From interna onal charitable partner-

ships with Special Olympics, the Global Wheelchair Mis-

sion and Habitat for Humanity to our own Food for

Families and Coats for Kids projects and other local

chari es, the Knights and their families is virtually end-

less.

Anyone interested in par cipa ng can drop off an un-

wrapped toy at St. Rose of Lima Catholic Church rectory

at 1305 Royal Ave in Simi Valley.

You also can make a monetary dona on by sending it
