2017 National Blue Ribbon School!
We SOAR with the Light of Jesus.
October 1, 2017
Dear St. John Families,
In case you haven’t heard the big news yet---On
Thursday, Sept. 28, U.S. Secretary of Education
Betsy DeVos recognized our school as one of 342
across the nation as a National Blue Ribbon School
for 2017. The recognition is based on a school’s
overall academic performance or progress in closing
achievement gaps among student subgroups. Our
school was one of four Archdiocese of Baltimore
schools, and one of 13 Maryland schools named as an
Exemplary High Performing School for 2017.
In anticipation of the announcement, students
gathered in the church hall to watch a live broadcast
online from the U.S. Department of Education. They
waited ten full minutes after Secretary DeVos’s
introduction to see their school photo and their
school name appear onscreen. They erupted in cheers
and applause and kicked up their heels with their
school eagle mascot to the sounds of Kool and the
Gang’s Celebrate song. Teachers and 8th grade
students popped confetti poppers, and volunteer
parents distributed blue balloons (NBRS and SJE
color), and shortly thereafter, blue raspberry Italian
ice to all the students and faculty. Afterwards, the
entire school (and the Eagle) posed for a photo on the
school steps (which is featured in the Catholic Review
here: http://bit.ly/CRblue). The faculty and staff
waved blue ribbon and “Honk for your blue ribbon
school” signs as family cars dismissed from the
parking lot.

Thank you to Mrs. Cox, Mrs. Cole, Mrs. Ercolano,
Mrs. DiCocco, Mrs. Kopp, and the many volunteers
for another successful SJE Crab Feast! It was a great
event and perfect timing to celebrate our Blue
Ribbon recognition with our community.
A special thank you to all the moms who picked up
balloons and served Rita’s Italian Ice for the special
assembly last Thursday. The children really enjoyed
the celebration.
Thank you to the Borzymowski Family for donating
and covering the preschool playground with new
mulch. Our preschool children love to play outside!
Many blessings,
Mrs. Blake

What’s Purple Friday?
On designated Fridays (or Thursdays) students may wear
Ravens jerseys, shirts, or colors with their gym shorts or
gym pants and tennis shoes for a donation of 50 cents.
The SJE Student Council will designate the charity to
which the proceeds will be donated. Students also may
wear purple and/or black socks, ribbons, bows, and
jewelry. The dates are marked on the website calendar
and highlighted in the weekly update.
What’s Spirit Day?
Once a month on the Tuesday that we have our pizza
lunch in the church hall, we also have a special spirit
day. Our student council chooses a theme, and students
can wear t-shirts, socks, and hair accessories reflective
of that theme with their gym pants and tennis shoes. Our
next SJE Spirit Day is October 17, and no donation is
required. The theme will change each month and
announced in the weekly update.
Volunteering & STAND If you want to volunteer and/or attend field trips,
Spring Fling, and Olympic Day, you must be current
with STAND requirements. Complete or update your
certification easily online. Please contact our STAND
coordinator, Mary Beth Bressler, at
[email protected] if you have any questions.
